Id rather spend my money on jammers and radar detection than pay more taxes for speeding.
Got my R8 a few months ago as an upgrade from the R3. I found it for $550, which seemed to be a good deal. People say the arrows are a gimmick, but knowing the signal is riding way behind me instead of waiting ahead on the road is priceless!
Vortex is the best. Nobody else gives us all of the info on radar detectors. I appreciate these videos so much! I have an R8 and it is amazing. I live in NYC (Queens) and work in Connecticut and the R8 warns me of all the state patrol on I-95 in both states. There are tons of speed and red light cameras here on the local streets and the R8 lets me know way in advance when I'm getting close. This is a nice upgrade from the R7. I'll stick with Uniden!
Have one too and at this price, the case should be magnesium and I don’t have much faith in the display. Uniden is not known for high end products so my fingers are crossed that it won’t have any warranty issues.
@chez9123 There are too many settings, and it would take a long time for me to type all of that. I can just tell you that I turn off X and K band because they don't use that here in the city. I leave MRCD on because we have the speed cameras and red light cameras here in NYC. It has been said that in NJ, some areas still use X band, so maybe you want to find out if that's still true. Go to the RD Forum and ask, and someone will tell you the answer. Hopefully, you pare part of the forum?
Bought it on a whim from Best Buy yesterday. Was going to get a Valentine because I hear so much about it. But so glad I got the Uniden R8 extreme! It looks so nice, high quality and professional. And it works so well!! I just went for a long drive to another city and it did a great job telling me where the cops were. Absolutely awesome radar detector. Probably the best one on the market, but a bit pricey at $760 total. But you pay for quality. So glad I got it!!

I always wanted a V1 but after seeing the R8 and V1 and the R8 was picking up K and KA Band lot further away it made me starting thinking about getting the R8. I love the R8 I was sitting in a drive through and all the sudden it starts going off and three cops passed by behind me. I was amazed how well it was picking up cops going by from my side and passing me from behind
Bought the updated 360c a few days ago, not crazy about it now returning to get the R8! I have the r4 so it only makes sense! This tutorial is the best!
Great job, Vortex!!! You covered everything very well. I would also caution people who use Ka/MRCD lockoout is that anything identified as MRCD, regardless of frequency in that range is locked out (as of 1.25 anyhow).
I’ve noticed this as well I have mine w mrcd enabled because I initially wasn’t sure if I was going to need it or not during that time i noticed that the R8 would I label a Kband of like 24.026 or whatever less than 24.1 in all cases I’ve seen. It flashes k band then changes to a mrcd it’s nice to see these as I live in a area where police do have K band radar so sometimes especially in town I can pick up on unusual radar that could be people breaking because they just saw a cop.
I'm running the R1 and (due to RDs being illegal here) I have the display completely off. I've found the voice feature extremely useful, as it tells me the different frequencies and makes it easy to determine how many radars are close by.
I purchased an Escort max 360 mk ii over the weekend. I took it home, updated it despite major connectivity issues. After updating, drove around in highway mode with it mounted next to my radenso Pro M and it was missing LEOs that my Radenso was picking up or picking them up later. Apparently tuned too much for quiet rather than being responsive. Returned it to BestBuy today and picked up the R8 and on the drive home, I got what I wanted, a radar picking up signals before my Radenso.

@@VortexRadar side by side, driving the same road that had 2 LEOs parked at various spots. Unplugged one, made the drive, repeated with the other. My radenso seemed to pick them up sooner.

Still rocking 3 OG V1's I bought them all late 1990's early 2000's. Yup they are chatter boxes with no bells and whistles, but they have saved me countless times. Believe it or not you tune out the chatter, but your ears will perk up on the distinctive bogey tones👂🤣

Great info for my new R7 too. I relegated my R3 to my wife's car. I want the option to turn K band off at highway speeds (+60mph high speed mute) to block all of the BSMs on the highway. Highways are only patrolled by state troopers in my state and they only use Ka band. Until Uniden offers that, I might try using city mode on the highway and highway mode in the city so that I have full sensitivety when I need it.

I do have a question, I have my K band main on or off setting to off but I still get K band alerts all the time so I wasn't sure if some of the secondary sub settings for K are still making it alert K bands but any insight on why that is occurring for my detector would be much appreciated!
I was about to drive through a construction zone but they had one of those signs with "your speed" setup before you entered. But what was odd was my radar would not detect it??? and it did read my speed. is this considered TSF? do you happen to know what band i should be looking for, just worried i have something disabled that shouldnt be. also, i am using the config file from your video here. thanks!
Will what apply? The R8 has many of the same features which the R7 has, plus some that it doesn't. Generally the features that they share work the same in both detectors, with a few minor exceptions like how the R7 lacks an ambient light sensor for the auto display brightness.
Top tier review and breakdown of the R8 and its features, really helped me get mine set up. I drive an 2022 F150 and am CONSTANTLY getting K 24.140 alerts...From what I can tell, this is below the filtering threshold available for K Block 1 & 2. I run K Filter-ON, K Block 1&2-WEAK, TSF-ON, MRCD/T-ON. I am almost certain my truck is causing the false K alerts, as I'll get the K 24.140 driving in the open country. Any suggestions to filter this without turning K band OFF completely?

Need a little advice. I just purchased a R8. Pretty much just plugged it in and run it for my drive home from Best Buy. What I noticed is a pretty consistent K band rear detection going off at 2 signal bars at the 24.160 frequency. I am pretty sure it's a rear sensor on my 2020 Jeep Cherokee. What K Block setting should I adjust in the detector to block or mute that as it's driving me crazy.
Ah yikes. Try the mute rear K band option. It’ll still show the signal on screen, but at least it’ll audibly mute the detector. Might be a tough situation with that vehicle. If you have an Android, you can use Highway Radar to mute 24.160 signals too.

Awesome video/channel that goes indepth with set up. Question, I just got an R8 and set it up. I am getting a constant K band 24.174 alert with arrow up (forward). It's very annoying and making it hard to use the radar. Any help or tips would be appreciated. (I'm updated to latest version V 1.28)
One speeding ticket since 2019 and I drive fast a lot. -EYES & Situational Awareness -Judgement; time & place assessment -MAX 360C -WAZE Its RARE that I have to slow down suddenly using this system because judgment first and foremost. I generally won't speed if I don't have a clear line of sight. I always look for hiding spots. I also avoid speeding in unfamiliar areas. I avoid blowing by other cars who might report me. Ill just roll off throttle and let drag get me to within 10 MPH of the other cars spead, then I floor it in a higher gear(quieter). Otherwise, I have RD and Waze for the rare moment when I screw up at the wrong time. Im near 50 BTW.

Been running the cobra dual pro 360 and out of all the detectors I have ran in the last little bit it is by far the quietest one of them all on bsm falses and city driving also ka band is pretty good not as good as the unidens or newer escorts but gives plenty of warning ...

Congrats! As mentioned in the video, Advanced mode is only for individually adjusting the sensitivity of each band, nothing else. Band segmentation works regardless of sensitivity mode.

I might have missed it, but is there a way for the RD to know in which direction you are traveling and only provide RLC based alerts if you are in the same path? i.e. I am driving on a highway south, and there is a perpendicular overpass going west to east and there is a RLC there, I don't want it to notify me if I'm not going in that direction. I’m referring to Uniden’s software that runs on your computer, not the detector firmware. I’ve seen other people use those settings files with 1.26 loaded onto their R8.

I bought one yesterday and ran it on my drive from Tampa to Shreveport LA and have to say, the arrows are extremely unreliable. Also, the range over hills etc seems to be lower than my r3 for some reason. But of course I’m 1800 miles away from home so I have no way to update software.
Sure, but it’s less sensitive than average, not that laser detection is all that useful in practice. You’ll need laser jammers for laser, not a radar detector.
I’m not asking you to prove it or for you to defend yourself. Relax brother. I’m just curious if it happens in every case or only in certain instances depending on what changes between firmware versions. Either way it’s straightforward enough for anyone to test while we think aloud.
@@VortexRadar I am relaxed, I wasn’t taking it as a challenge. But if you look at the bin you can see that it’s designed to align with cataloged locations for the settings. So if a firmware upgrade has new settings those locations will change at least in part. So if an upgrade requires you reset your detector to factory settings, the old settings file you had before would not match. I am not sure if they will even allow the old settings file to work with a new firmware that has new cataloged settings. I would hope they would not.
6:00 I wish it wouldn't scream "you are exceeding the speed" constantly when you're over the speed... i don't mind the warning that there is a speed camera but its not so great that my dashcam is recording the detector saying "you are exceeding the speed".... they should really not state that and use a sound or something else.
You can turn that feature off I use to set mine at 90 mph but when I get at 91 mph it tells me I'm exceeded the speed limit I just turn it off an relying on Rd to alert me

I wonder if that’s an intentional design choice given that MultaRadar transmits multiple signals at various frequencies.

Top tier review and breakdown of the R8 and its features, really helped me get mine set up. I drive an 2022 F150 and am CONSTANTLY getting K 24.140 alerts...From what I can tell, this is below the filtering threshold available for K Block 1 & 2. I run K Filter-ON, K Block 1&2-WEAK, TSF-ON, MRCD/T-ON. I am almost certain my truck is causing the false K alerts, as I'll get the K 24.140 driving in the open country. Any suggestions to filter this without turning K band OFF completely?
Might be better to just turn it off, I plan on using the R8 just on KA band. The K band is quite annoying.

Need a little advice. I just purchased a R8. Pretty much just plugged it in and run it for my drive home from Best Buy. What I noticed is a pretty consistent K band rear detection going off at 2 signal bars at the 24.160 frequency. I am pretty sure it's a rear sensor on my 2020 Jeep Cherokee. What K Block setting should I adjust in the detector to block or mute that as it's driving me crazy.
Ah yikes. Try the mute rear K band option. It’ll still show the signal on screen, but at least it’ll audibly mute the detector. Might be a tough situation with that vehicle.
If you have an Android, you can use Highway Radar to mute 24.160 signals too.

Awesome video/channel that goes indepth with set up. Question, I just got an R8 and set it up. I am getting a constant K band 24.174 alert with arrow up (forward). It's very annoying and making it hard to use the radar. Any help or tips would be appreciated. (I'm updated to latest version V 1.28)

Its RARE that I have to slow down suddenly using this system because judgment first and foremost. I generally won't speed if I don't have a clear line of sight. I always look for hiding spots. I also avoid speeding in unfamiliar areas. I avoid blowing by other cars who might report me. Ill just roll off throttle and let drag get me to within 10 MPH of the other cars spead, then I floor it in a higher gear(quieter).
Otherwise, I have RD and Waze for the rare moment when I screw up at the wrong time.

Been running the cobra dual pro 360 and out of all the detectors I have ran in the last little bit it is by far the quietest one of them all on bsm falses and city driving also ka band is pretty good not as good as the unidens or newer escorts but gives plenty of warning ...

Congrats! As mentioned in the video, Advanced mode is only for individually adjusting the sensitivity of each band, nothing else. Band segmentation works regardless of sensitivity mode.

I might have missed it, but is there a way for the RD to know in which direction you are traveling and only provide RLC based alerts if you are in the same path? i.e. I am driving on a highway south, and there is a perpendicular overpass going west to east and there is a RLC there, I don't want it to notify me if I'm not going in that direction. I'm thinking no, but wanted to be sure.

Ah the self-test? It’s toward the end of the menu and you can turn it back on. :)

Bought this to go with my brand new Cadillac Blackwing so this was a nno Brainer buy... but I just want to know does this specific model jam the police radar so they don't know there is a radar detector??
Congrats! As far as radar jamming, that is HIGHLY illegal and so we focus purely on radar detection.

I’m referring to Uniden’s software that runs on your computer, not the detector firmware. I’ve seen other people use those settings files with 1.26 loaded onto their R8.
Will the R8 automatically shut itself off after not moving for a period of time? I had a issue with an Escort detector that constantly drained my cars battery if I didn't unplug it every time, will I have the same problem with the R8?
Escort and Uniden detectors have auto shutoff options to avoid exactly that happening

What setting would I have to change because once I get a ka signal the first 2 beeps are super loud and then it goes quiet can I change that or is that just how the radar is?
That’s the auto mute. You can adjust the main volume for the initial beeps then the auto mute vol for how quiet it is when it drops the volume.
So I did the update and now I am getting Gastro warnings which I know are false. Is this a glitch on the update? I live in IL.

I bought one yesterday and ran it on my drive from Tampa to Shreveport LA and have to say, the arrows are extremely unreliable. Also, the range over hills etc seems to be lower than my r3 for some reason. But of course I’m 1800 miles away from home so I have no way to update software.

Sure, but it’s less sensitive than average, not that laser detection is all that useful in practice. You’ll need laser jammers for laser, not a radar detector.
Those saved settings only work with firmare versions that have the same settings.
Is that always the case? Or only if a new firmware adds new settings or something?

I’m not asking you to prove it or for you to defend yourself. Relax brother. I’m just curious if it happens in every case or only in certain instances depending on what changes between firmware versions. Either way it’s straightforward enough for anyone to test while we think aloud.
@@VortexRadar I am relaxed, I wasn’t taking it as a challenge. But if you look at the bin you can see that it’s designed to align with cataloged locations for the settings. So if a firmware upgrade has new settings those locations will change at least in part. So if an upgrade requires you reset your detector to factory settings, the old settings file you had before would not match. I am not sure if they will even allow the old settings file to work with a new firmware that has new cataloged settings. I would hope they would not.

6:00 I wish it wouldn't scream "you are exceeding the speed" constantly when you're over the speed... i don't mind the warning that there is a speed camera but its not so great that my dashcam is recording the detector saying "you are exceeding the speed".... they should really not state that and use a sound or something else.
My R8 does not shut the hell up and the speed cameras are on the road next to or even below me. They need much better GPS tracking
You can turn that feature off I use to set mine at 90 mph but when I get at 91 mph it tells me I'm exceeded the speed limit I just turn it off an relying on Rd to alert me
