    I like how you add in the rpm's to the equation and how to find out what the current draw should be based on the amp-hour rating of the battery. Super useful information!

    Hello! Frank, please tell me how you measured ampere rating of that battery (10:11) doing 70 x (3) = 210 Amps? Please explain! Thank`s!

      Hi dorcky. As Frank explains, the consumer should take about 3.5 times the ampere-hour rating of the battery. Looking at the battery, Frank tells us that it has a stated ampere-hour rating of 74. To simplify the math, he rounds it down to 70. Now he needs to multiply it with 3.5. He knows that 3 x 70 = 210, and that he'll then need to add another 0.5 of 70, plus a little extra because he rounded it down. Looking at the screen, the capture states 268, so Frank is happy that that is close enough. I hope this explains it a little more.

    great info thanks . do you think this is a better way to test the battery then using a battery test say like Midtronics ?

      Just about any way is better then the Midtronics. Tri State Battery tries the lastest greatest on the market each year, and every Midtronics as lied with in 2-3 days if not sooner. Load testing is way better, but getting a printout for consumers doesn't really exist. Midtronics is suppose to be the industry leader, but I have yet to find one that won't lie within a couple of days of using it.

    I liked the video but disagree that the current should be a function of battery capacity; the load - Frank referred to this as the consumer - should be what you are looking at. Cranking amperage will be affected by the starter motor, the engine compression / condition.

      bhartwigutube you have a point but each battery is designed for the load. And this is a well known rule of thumb as well. Obviously nothing beats having a known good waveform, but 3.5xah is a general rule of thumb

    why would i need all this if my cranking amps on a simple multimeter would give me 9.5V or higher?? i mean it looks like great fun to know all this but i ask why besides the fun?

      cowfy Kaufman, because a DMM isn't fast enough to measure voltage on a pulse width circuit or a CAN/BUS network on a vehicle, and if you're having a problem that's intermittent on one of those circuits then a scope is really the one of the only tools that's going to help you find the issue. You don't really need a scope for testing the battery like this, but it is very useful for other things.

      Because you wouldn't know if the voltage is low due to a weak battery or because of a stiff starter motor. Voltage low, current low = bad battery. Voltage low, current high = bad starter

      Craig Hewison, you can easily check those things using a meter and amp clamp and doing voltage drop tests though. You don't necessarily need a lap scope for that, although it may make the testing faster? I'm not sure about that.

      The Angry Yota Tech unless you had two multimeters so you could measure both at the same time, capturing an intermittent fault would be difficult due to having to perform the two tests at different times. Each to their own though i suppose, its whatever suits the individual job in hand at the time.
      Don't forget scoping the starter current can be used for assessing relative compression, impossible with a DMM

    Don't forget to turn off all consumers, before testing the consumer.

    Back around 1980 , I went to the salvage yard for a used battery . I had a Milton load tester and they laughed at me . The guy used a tire iron to short the terminals out . Big spark : battery good , small spark : maybe not good , no spark : dead . Was that an SAE test ? I bet the same idiots are still butchering vehicles !

      Frank Fish disagree, people trying to learn need a longer video. People who already know then yes 4 to 5 but you can’t choose your viewer.
