    Dan love your videos, I used to be very good at diagnosing and fixing problems with pretty much anything from cars to computers, electronics, been in the tech field all my life. Was injuried in a accident couple years ago and suffered a serious concussion and orthopedic issues that are permanent. I watch your videos and listen to your ways of diagnosis and repair to help me with my recovery thanks and continue your way of education thx

    People need to be educated that’s a fault code is a symptom and not a diagnosis. Good job as always 👍🏻

    A quick check would have been to simply unplug the maf sensor. The engine would have ran on the default fuel table using tps and rpm points for fueling.
    I know Dan knows that. Just mentioning it for those who don't have a scope.

    great job again.
    Diesel engines with EDC have the same issues,for example when no have turbo boost and no have dtc code, first check is the condition of MAP sensor.I fixed a lot of cars just after i clean the carbons and oil inside them.
    bravo Dan, continue with great videos.
    This is a very good example when one technician know the thing on the DNA level 😉. It is very important to know how to diagnose with scope.👍🏻👏

    That takes me back, too many parts fitters these days rely on fault codes. I had a 2.0 TFSi that was showing all sorts of boost fault codes. On the Skoda 2.0 TFSi the air filter box is held on by big rubber bungs. These bungs can become displaced when refitting the air filter cover and get sucked into the turbo! A really bad design fault. Once the chewed up bits of rubber were removed from the turbo, no more boost fault codes!

    Another excellent case study. As I follow along I often pause the video and consider what I would do next. Although my first guess on listening to the engine was a plugged exhaust, the data pointed right at the MAF. As usual I didn't think of the other important cause, reduced fuel delivery from a weak pump, exposed when demand increases. In a way, this presentation is a crude reciprocal of a vac leak, in this case going lean at WOT, with secondary compensation. Thank you for walking us through another useful learning experience.

    Excellent video Dan, one note to viewers, this is a clear case of uneven revving around 4000 rpm, newer engines, for example VAG engines are rev limited at full throttle while you’re parked or standing still. Don’t confuse the two situations. I have a 1.4TSI which sticks to 3500 rpm at full throttle, but even running.

  • @600322
    @600322 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is the same phenomenon with my car.It would not rev beyond 4000 rpm unloaded with no gear engaged.It is a 3 cylinder and this is a security measure against any critical vibrations above resonant frequency.Very simple.

    I was doing this back in the 80's and tbh you guys have it made now. Our diagnostic tools weren't nearly as good so you had to know the basics and that was always our mantra, remember the basics and what it takes to make a simple engine run. Anyway, we would write the codes down, clear, and road test the car and see if anything set. (Back then there was no short/long term code difference. Get a late 80's or early 90's elec FI car with a computer and no obd 1 or 2 in it and see how fun that can be.

    First off awesome job, I wanted to say that the test of the 02 sensor heater circuit was great. Sometimes I forget that wideband sensors use them too. I liked the use of the scope in circuit testing the maf, I personally like using the calculated engine load % to find dirty mafs. Toyota needs 90% minimum on wide open throttle. Then I would break out the scope. Anyway! Great job!

      Hi sorry Dan ! No comma from me for a long time . My peugeot 5008 1.6 rudimentary is running on 3 injectors and because I have used my downloaded version of the peugeot DIAGBOX windows 7 software too many times to clear the fault codes at various repair stages , now I am getting error messages . The whole engine was overhauled(new camshaft , skimmed old cylinder head , new injector seals and sleeves, new gasket , new crankshaft magnet ring , water pump all professionally fitted and torqued ) . My question is if either I programme the non firing injector with my software and if it works then also if there are still error messages popping up because of the fault code storing memory is full , I will have to take the car to the peugeot dealers to remap( whole software update ) the ecu any any other things need to be done . Please kindly advice me if this is the way to go ? Thank you so much and I wish you late Christmas greetings and a very happy new year . I have been ill since April this year and could not do much with my car . Just waiting to get better myself and for a better weather !!

    You would think that the aux heating or the O2 sensor would not be needed once the car reaches normal operating temperature. At 600 degrees, the O2 sensor should work normally. Another thing, the scanner should give you the status of the fuel pressure and MAP sensor voltage. Just check them and see, no need to manual test at the sensor location.

    • @Diagnosedan
      @Diagnosedan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure you mean Maf and not Map😜 Using a scope and measure at the component is more reliable than looking at scandata. Some scanners even give you a default reading when the component is unplugged. The scandata is processed data and could be false when for Example you have a resistance in a wire.
      This is what seperates the Professional from the Diy.

  • @dominicdo
    @dominicdo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great advice never trust the scanner! based on the data i would have for sure checked the MAF first. I thought the MAF over calculates off idle and under calculates on idle. The STFT did not show that at idle but you could for sure see the difference at high RPM. You should have seen a positive STFT at idle based on theory.

  • @caduceus33
    @caduceus33 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dan, this is really good stuff! I would like to recommend something which would help me and other DIY amateurs: It would help if you explain some of your thought processes in diagnosing, such as why you decided to check the MAF, and the other system you decided needed to be checked if the MAF was not the problem. Thanks!

    • @Diagnosedan
      @Diagnosedan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      caduceus33 In the fuel trim we could see the engine was running lean.
      So this means we are not getting enoug fuel, or to much air.
      Because the engine was not lean at idle, this was not an airleak.
      So only not enough fuel remains.
      So the engine was thinking less air was comming in ( mass air meter)
      or there was not enough fuel comming out of the injectors(fuel pressure)
      So the next thing i would have tested would have been the fuel pressure😉

      Dan I am very impressed by your systematic methods of approaching a problem with a system in this case an automobile. I have a question for you about my E31 1991 OBC which is in the center console just below the AC center vents. This car has always been serviced by BMW authorized
      dealer. This OBC in the dash has been loosing pixels from the LED display. It is a known issue with BMW. I have considered taking the box apart but I do not want to make this problem worse, The car is not OBD2, it is the OBD2 system with the round bayonet connector located in the right front of the engine bay behind the pop up headlight. I have owned the BMW for 13 years, the dealer recently looked at the drivers seat bottom has just recently started twisting to the right when I attempted to move it back. I have searched youtube for help and have concluded that the 1991 850i has cables (much like a speedometer cable) that needs to be examined. Some of the fixes are to cut the cable housing so that the square end of the inner steel cable can engage the gearbox. The dealer does not want to touch this problem, I understand. The technicians of that era are retired or deceased. I am looking for options for maintaining this beautiful Calypso Red 850i which has been driven 67000 miles. It's beautiful, when I take to the AD it will draw a crowd. Young BMW salesman thought it was a new model, he should be taught about the BMW history. People have told me that the E31's are full of electrical problems, but I have had very few. Keep the batteries charged and the ground wires clean and tight and the car has been a joy to drive. In today's car world this is simple. I also own a VW derived W12 that I have owned for a number of years and have had no problems except with the TPMS pcm. I kept the old part and I wish I could find someone like you Sir who takes a methodical and systematic approach to solving problems. I am a retired professional engineer (pwr generation), and you should be a teacher, which, I guess you are, because this old man is still learning. Thank you so much for your time and effort to make these videos Professor Dan !!!

    Awesome video Diag Dan, great Information on MAF's, STFT, LTFT, Widebands, and using Lambda.
    I have ran into a couple VW 2.0 TSI Turbocharged engines that were both setting false MAF performance codes as well as having very high Fuel Trims (lean cond) under high rpms, both with cracked intercoolers! I know that this is not the case here, just thought I'd share that information with you and others.
    Just wondering if you have seen similar problems like this with those European models you seem to work on over there?
    I love your channel, learning new stuff outside of American helps tremendously!

    Sorry also with ignition on there is no fuel coming to the filter injection ecu just reading the fuel pressure 350 bar initially in the rail does not let anything else happen because no fuel feed ( it is an 8v DV6C with eolys additive system . )

    Two things intrigued me - can you provide some explanation?
    1) sound of the engine souded too harsh, compared to my car. Was the exhaust OK?
    2) ECU was not able to detect the open circuit in the upstream O2 sensor - I believe there is a dedicated DTC for that

    That was one crusty MAF. Good video.. I was thinking fuel pressure. I guess it's a toss up which to check first (unless you had a reason to go to the MAF?).

    Great video. I didn;t know those toyota 4-wire O2 sensors are wideband ones. Since the car could not rev at maximum, why did you expected an almost maximum value from the MAF sensor. Does it flat-out after an RPM value?

    • @fir3w4lk3r
      @fir3w4lk3r 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK, I just noticed the the RPM value was almost 6000 RPM, so the almost 5 volts is expected from the MAF.

    Another great video Dan. I really enjoy your videos. There is a lot of learning in them. I’ve always struggled somewhat with the correct way to check an air mass meter. In this video when you reved the car the Air mass didn’t reach where it should be and it was because the AirMass was dirty but what if it was a fuel pressure issue that was causing the engine not to rev. If the engine isn’t Reving fully would that not lead to a low Air Mass signal also?

      Tom OConnor The best way for remembering is repetition.
      So use your tools available as much as you can. And do as much diagnoses as possible.
