  • A quick walkthrough tour of our finished tiny home, manufactured by Tiny Heirloom Inc as shown on the DIY/HGTV series Tiny Luxury Season 1 Episode 15.
    The home was built on a 28' triple axle custom trailer. The upper length is 32' due to the dual cantilever lofts. This not only extends the sleeping area but expands the vaulted area making the home feel spacious especially in the kitchen. Home is completely off-grid. Systems include 1000 watt solar panels, 13,800k watt battery bank, Inverter, tank-less gas hot water heater, gas furnace, gas/electric fridge, 110V combo W/D, AND mini-split AC/Heater than runs off 110V (inverted). Trailer was custom made to distribute the weight appropriately. Other luxury amenities include: reclaimed mixed hardwood floors and stair treads, dual stair-case white marble countertop, beetle kill pine ceilings, and loft floors, LED lighting throughout, in-ceiling audio, in-drawer dishwasher, hammered copper sink, two manual sky-lights and one electric/automatic skylight. The toilet is the same you'd find in an RV. The county where I'm parking the tiny house prohibits composting toilets. I'm putting in a sewer and well and the entire setup will be compete.

    I have been looking at numerous of Tiny Home videos, and by far this is one of the nicest I've seen, with the exception of a lil extra knee crawling into the master bedroom. I have yet to see one built with a hand crank roof over the bedroom area(as in certain small campers to give some standing room), which I think would be very nice. I just can't handle that crawling, and I have to stand up straight to dress. lol. But this is amazingly beautiful!! Thank you for sharing. : ))

    Might be worth to put some sort of ladder system on both ends then your windows to clean the solar panels also serve as emergency exits if you need them. Obviously one that isn't accessible from the ground for safeties sake.

    thank you for sharing this. Am glad you mention about your internet and am a startup iOS developer and stock broker, internet is crucial to me. I wonder what's your setup on this, you mention hi speed internet?

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, this was key...it is difficult, if not impossible, to get high-speed internet in rural mtns....sometime there is DSL through the phone provider....which is the case here but I'd have to spend $10-15k to run it from the road..0.5mi away. Dish/Direct TV satellite dish is also a NO GO b/c of the high latency for the signal travel to earth's orbit and back.
      I have line of sight to a tower for a local point-to-point broadband service provider. They have different packages but I'll have 5-6mbps for about $50/mo. That will be my only utility. There are serveral of these types of local wireless broadband service providers popping up. www.dd-wireless.com/?page_id=106.

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks. I put hundreds of hours into research and design to make this tiny home universally awesome! :) I had it wired to put a 32" LED TV on the outside of the Master loft (00:28 picture)...in the niche...opposite the master loft shelves/storage. From there the TV can be seen from the dining area, kitchen, & kids loft.

    This is exactly what I want to do. I would have to get financing though. Low income sucks.... but living off grid.... No other "utilities" other than satelite or internet? What about the solar panels, though? Do they work that well? What advice could you give? I saw the note somewhere in the comments about a steel frame and spray in insulation. I also noticed you have dogs. Would you recommend the hardwood flooring, or something better? What other types of flooring could one purchase that would not degrade if the doggies happen to ... y'know, while I was away from home? I plan to use my future tiny home as not only my regular house but my vacation house, too. I would build mine on a goose neck trailer and have some wild ideas about the loft design. What was your all around cost? I like the extra room in the back. I would use my other loft for storage and art supplies...

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First understand I had this built by Tiny Hierloom Inc...it wasn't DIY. I did entirely design it but not build it....that would have taken me more than a year...and time=money. I upgraded many materials & system AND a lot of labor hours. All in cost is $115k. The solar system was $10k, Inverter mini-split AC/Heat $3,500, wood upgrades $5000 (beetle kills pine/mixed reclaimed hardwood floors, AND extra for cantilever lofts, custom dual stairs, custom upholstered cushions. The custom kitchen table is maple...there is many custom welded support pieces etc.
      Yes utilities is $50/mo for internet and the occasional refill of propane. We did reclaimed hardwood floors b/c they are already distressed. Many material are available now that hold-up well with dogs.

    • @Artsy.Journeys
      @Artsy.Journeys 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda figured that with the elements you put in it would cost more. Still a huge amount though. But like you, I may have to contract someone out... What did you say you did for water tanks? Do you store them underneath?
      This is still very helpful information. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I need all the information I can get. It may turn out being that this is something I can do immediately, but it is something I want to work for. Did you add any sweat equity into your home at all? If I could find a local builder, I might try doing that to help cut down on some costs. I know it wouldn't decrease the cost by a huge amount at all, maybe only by a fraction, but every bit helps.

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could consider a partial DIY build....I've toured their facility and would recommend www.tumbleweedhouses.com/products/amish-barn-raiser

    I like the floorplan but was it me I would ditch the dishwasher for more storage and ditch the white , well ALL the white paint. You may rethink all the white as well in winter when out side will be all white to. Did you have any problems with codes where youre at?

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't argue much...dishwasher was a 'luxury' add by builder and my Mrs requested it. White does contrast well with my wood finishes and feels very spacious...not winter tested yet. No code problems. My 5 acre lot has a defunct HOA which if they were enforcing does prohibit permanent "trailers" and residences under 600sqft. That's a calculated gamble...now that I know my neighbors they don't care anyway.

    Hi Ben. We've just hired Tiny Heirloom to build us a custom tiny home. We actually watched your show the other day, your kids are adorable. I was wondering how you feel towing this thing? We plan to travel for a year or so and hear such mixed reviews about towing tiny houses. Would you feel comfortable towing this thing around the country with the appropriate truck? I thought that was your plan, which is why I'm asking. Did you decide not to tow after receiving it?

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Allison Shea Honestly mine wasn’t built to tow. It weighs 20,000 pounds! They brought it to Colorado from Oregon using a F350 Dulley. The driver said it pulled pretty well but was very heavy and was kind of tough through mountain passes and such. If you plan on pulling this to travel I would use much lighter weight materials and probably keep the trailer smaller.

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No & No. Where I have it parked on a hill required heavy machinery to get it there and it isn't leaving unless you have a tractor and a bull-doser. Leaving the wheels on so the weight is distributed evenly. Will be adding skirting and a deck...will post a video upcoming.

  • @Downytide
    @Downytide 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick questions.
    - Does the solar provide enough to power all the electronic in the house? 6 batteries seem to be relatively small capacity to power the split-hvac and the dryer all the while charging other bits.
    - what's the water situation like? do you rely on fresh tank and fill it periodically? or are you running water of the grid? how is sewage being stored? or there's a septic tank below ground under the trailer?

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't fully tested yet but it should NOT be a problem...battery bank produces almost 14,000 watts. I might need a few more panels to replenish the battery bank but the bank is large enough to run everything...just looking at the numbers. I plan to post a real world test this fall.

    Beautiful home. The video did not say nor did I see the question asked in the comments but I am curious of how many watts your panels are? I see your battery bank is supposed to provide 14,000w fully charged but no mention of the panels themselves.

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solar panels generate 340 watts in full sun each...so just over 1,000 watts per hour. Still need to fully test but I assume if the batteries were flat it would take two days of sun to recharge.

    • @Mulingko
      @Mulingko 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ben Bigler good to know. thank you. it would be nice to get a follow up after using them for a few months if you find time.
      I have a couple 40w panels and it's incredible the wattage they put out depending how square they are to the sun. non direct light hardly gets you anything. So wonder how more efficient they would be on a solar tracking system to keep them running optimal.

    • @BiglerThanEver

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charlotte Scoggins I do have Two heating sources. The second is a mini split on the wall that does AC and heat.

    • @StriderGTS
      @StriderGTS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do those mini splits do when it gets cold?

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will heat the place up fast but I'm not 100% comfortable running the mini split on the battery bank...I'm completely off grid. So I use it to get the house to temp and then use the propane furnace which keep the house plenty warm. I maintained 70 degree in mid-teens temp outside recently overnight. The tiny house is a very tight efficiently insulated box.

      Most tiny homes I've seen are "travel trailers". Occasionally, you'll see them on gooseneck trailers as "5th wheels".

      It sees like most build them to be hauled to a spot and stay in that location instead of traveling around. Most are really heavy compared to a travel trailer. I am looking to build one with a more aerodynamic front end and lighter in weight to be towed around a lot. The thing with the tiny homes is that are made of higher quality stuff. Thanks for all the comments. I truly love yours! its beautiful.

      Thanks again. Yeah ours is 19,000 pds...super heavy and was pull by a F350 dually to be delivered...then a doser to take it up the steep hill to my lot. To save weight consider metal/aluminum framing & spray foam for high R-factor and rigidity...then other light weight materials. I've seen 20' homes under 8,000 pds, which can be pulled with a F150 light duty truck. Tiny homes by default are higher quality longer lasting materials than RV Travel Trailers...they will be heavier.

      It's a lot cheaper than a house and comparable with a high end rv.

    How do you deal with the off gassing as the batteries charge?

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Batteries are sealed and I don't have any risk/issues there.

      @mgl The owner mentioned this home was 115k. This home was built by Tiny Heirloom. The home was built on a Trailer Made trailer. We are also a dealer for Trailer Made and build custom tiny homes as well. If you are interested in a custom tiny home feel free to contact us on our Facebook page. Alpine Tiny Homes

    How can I get the plans? How long is the house?

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trailer 28'. Each loft is cantilevered 2'....so upper length is 32'. Including lofts your at approx 350sqft. The builder was Tiny Heirloom Inc...they'd have the plans....but I don't think there are "plans" per-say. This was all custom. I did link in another comment my 2D drawing. Good Luck!

    Why must you,. and so many other tiny house people use fish-eyed lenses? It does nothing but distort what you actually want us to see. I love the house, I really do, it's just that it looks like the entire thing is built within a cigar tube.

    • @BiglerThanEver
      @BiglerThanEver  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's what I had...I agree it does distort reality a bit but it gives you a more life-like field of view as we all see the world with two eyes and much broader peripheral vision than a phone camera can capture.

    • @tysonschneider
      @tysonschneider 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it was a good move using the fish-eye. I would not have enjoyed this video if it had a tiny field of view. Too many videos are shot with phone cameras so that you can not really get the big picture. I think it was perfect.
      Thanks Ben for sharing an awesome video.

    Beautiful home,but I don't like that door. It is so out of place. Other wise the house is a winner.

      MickiClick1 The sliding door is actually pretty fabulous it saves tons of space coming in and out and works really well where I have it in the mountains.
