Something you also need to be aware of, especially if you have a house on wheels, is that the wheels deteriorate.
So after living in the same place for a while, your tires might be without air, or even broken.
In Norway, they use a lot of salt in the winter, so the base of your home might also turn into a pile of rust....
Isolation steal space, but it keeps the temperature more steady, so don't skimp on it.
I got myself a cabin instead.
I got a little apartment in the middle of the forest, electric, well water, burner toilet and several rooms..
It's a heaven, any upgrade will increase the value and make it easier to sell later on.
It's just a 5 minute drive to the nearest store, 20 min to the nearest city.
It's a cheaper solution than a house, but safer than a house on wheels.

Hi folks. Don't forget security. There have been several reports of tiny houses actually being stolen in the United States. Even a tongue lock won't prevent a determined thief, so plan on how to secure it in your absence. Coming home in the aftermath of a burglary is bad, but coming back and finding your home gone takes it to a whole new level.

@Klaa2 even countries with nice climates can deal with cold/heat waves that go far from the norm. Germany had to install air conditioning in old government buildings because even though their climate is usually quite cold/mild, they had a heat wave and it caused some people to pass out, I believe.
Also, America is huge and has a wide range of climates, from wildly cold or hot areas to temperate areas like you mentioned. No matter the climate, however, insulation is important, especially as many tiny houses have large windows and don't usually seem to have fans or air conditioning. I really don't see why insulation is something you would deem unimportant or not worth the cost, when there's so many other ways to save money while building tiny houses

    • @beth8775
      @beth8775 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Some legal challenges - like sewer laws - are about public health. Size laws mostly started that way too; they came from old time tenement problems.

@@monkeymoonky7900 Yes, it is generally difficult to get changes made. In order to build the best argument to, say, convince city council, it helps to know where it all started. These laws were absolutely necessary when they were made, and now a debate about whether they still are, or to what degree, is going on.

    • @jzt999
      @jzt999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Size laws came about solely to exclude poorer people from richer neighborhoods. The people who got onto zoning boards were contractors, builders, lumberyard owners, and rich folks who wanted their property values to increase, and to kick out the people who had farmed or owned the land for generations. I'm a yankee, and that's where it started.
So, go ahead and moan and groan about it all, but stop electing people with a monetary agenda to officiate over your housing options.

There are some houses that are only movable by semi that have downstairs bedrooms. But here's the thing that escapes me, doesn't any one just build a "stay put" tiny house? There are a lot of older houses that are tiny by our standards. That is what I would want. Camping, I''ll use a camper. Living, I use a stay put house. To me, they offer more options. Property that is yours (gardens, etc,) much more opportunity for a floor plan. Again, I wouldn't mind having one if I were single, but it wouldn't be mobile. For heaven's sake, they are really not terribly safe in many parts of the country.

    • @InfernosReaper
      @InfernosReaper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah, that's why it's better to design around sleeping downstairs when possible. A loft only really works if you have decent stairs to it, but most designs only have that a ladder, which is really terrible to climb while half asleep.
It's better to get a futon with a decent mattress(those actually do exist) then throw a good topper on it. Throw so drawers under it for some storage and it's good to go. Then you can sleep in the livingroom/lounge area no problem.
The only way I can see the loft being particularly necessary is for guests or if you're putting a family in there.

A moving tiny house and container living on your own land is completely different.
I have a 2 story container home on a lake for summers and weekends. I did dig a well and it’s 100% solar panel. I did this only after the tiny house I had with a giant truck to pull it for travel ended up being ridiculously priced, including different state laws for traveling, gas and parking.
I’ll break it down. It ended up costing me less to buy a plot of land 15 feet from a lake plus build out (myself) a 2 story modern container home AND I bought a used RV for travel and it was much less trouble than one tiny house.

I go where I want when I want, I can tailor how I live with my current finances, move to the best climate and fix things myself. And it's cheaper than the city. The only thing I'm looking forward to transitioning to is sail boat life so I can see more than here. Tiny homes are just heavier RVs as far as I can tell. Everything in an RV is already made for "tiny" mobile living. It's wonderful and I recommend it to everyone. Four friends have followed me into the life and it's worked for all of them in their own ways. I'm not against tiny homes, but if you're interested in them then check out RV, van and boat living too. Good video. The biggest problem with tiny houses I’ve found are the (arbitrary) limitations set up by governments that make them illegal or existing in a legal gray area. That means it is impossible or at least very hard to put down permanent roots with a tiny house on a certain piece of land without feeling like the situation is a house of cards that could be undone by arbitrary rules. I’d like to switch to a tiny home from my traditional home, but the risk isn’t worth it.

This is one of the best tiny house videos I've ever seen, and I've seen hundreds. This is the first one that mentions the need for a car if, like most tiny house dwellers, you're in a somewhat remote location. This isn't just a financial issue - it's an environmental one, and it's so often ignored amongst the otherwise perfectly valid claims about tiny houses and reduction of environmental impact. Also especially helpful points about insurance and certifications. Thank you so much for a stellar video.

Yep, I've owned a car for over forty years, so I had a BOING! moment when she mentioned car ownership as a problem. I suppose it would be an issue for uprooted city dwellers who once existed with nothing but public transportation, but the US is car country. A vehicle is definitely a requirement for anyone moving to the country: how else would you bring supplies home from "town," a horse and wagon? get fuel for the tractor? If you or the kids have to go to a doctor? If the frost/heat/insects wipe out the veggie garden for six months?
Playing Amish gets old if you weren't raised that way. Sustainability is fine until your kid gets bit by a rattlesnake 40 miles from the nearest hospital. A person in the country needs a truck, period. Enough for Mom, Dad, kids and the dog.

Many tiny houses exceed the weight rating of the trailers they are built on, making them illegal to transport on roadways. Additionally, they may not be built to sustain the types of twisting, vibration and disturbances that are involved in transporting them. In more extreme climates the floors (often overlooked) must be super well insulated in order to maintain plumbing systems and adequate comfort levels.

My prior RV was a 1978 with only one prior owner who took very good care of it. We used it for 10 plus years before building our camper. The RV never gave us any problems and was well used but was just too large and complex, so we sold it and built what works best for us. Now...with these Tiny Homes, though they are cute they are really not meant for constant traveling and that's why I said get a 5th wheel, RV, or camper. However, if you're going to just roll that "Micro-Home" onto a piece of property here and there and want more of a "home feel" than, I would say, go with a Tiny Home. Ultimately, I gave a quick comment to what seemed to be a very simple solution to an extremely obvious problematic issue. I do lots of research, question everything, and have decades of life experience behind my gray hair (wisdom), so I am not sure were your comment of having a lot to learn falls into place. It did give me something to laugh at while drinking my coffee today and therefore it wasn't a completely wasted response. Cheers.

Most people I meet who want to live in a tiny house would do better in buying a small WWII home to live out of. The grey areas of law, the knowing what you are doing to prevent molds or liabilities, the type of hookups or just living with someone in a tiny space every night all add up. Are tiny houses fun? Yes. Are the practical. Not for everyone. I would even say most people. So many older WWII homes are all over this country in the 700 to 1200 sq feet. Small enough to be better than a standard american 2700 sq foot home but still none of the extremes with tiny homes. Pretty much everyone I talk to have rose tinted glasses when talking about it but when I ask just a few questions they have no answers to I figure most just walk away and continue their standard way of life. Life does not have to be extreme. Again there are plenty of smaller homes that are just fine to remodel for the same price if not cheaper not to mention older condos that just need a bit of remodel. Revitalizing these older neighborhoods can be great as I have personal seen it.

I make $50k a year and am miraculously student loan free. @@evercuriousmichelle many of these homes are below 50k and I have many friends and family in them. If its not possible in your region that truly sucks but in some cities they already have laws shutting down tiny homes and RV living outside of an RV park. My city is trying to prevent solar and rain collection because the city owns the utility companies and shut down off grid living every chance they get. So does my statement fit every situation? No but for the majority of people I know it has been a great answer in many states. Tx, MS, Indiana, Ohio, and NM. Since my statement on this a year ago I have a brother and sister in law and best friend all moved into homes that the most expensive was 54k and did not need to be fixed up as the seller did so and the others were fixed up for under 15k. so possible its to have a beautiful home 2-3 bedrooms no garage so carport later down the road all for less than 50-60k. most of these people make less than 40k a year combined incomes so again some regions will have harder time doing this. Truly sorry if it does not work in your area. Having a 700ft home over a 200ft give more options for home business and home schooling. Im offering solutions not condemning others.

One issues with tiny houses is that, without the land ownership, they are basically super nice RVs, which will only depreciate in value as they get older. For better or worse, it is the land ownership under even old or tiny stationary houses which increases in value overtime.
Back in the day, people bought a house mid-20s, lived there 40-50 years, and then sold the land/house…which was often a large part of their retirement funding. Unless there starts to be small land parcels for sale…this won’t happen with tiny houses. Tiny houses may (or may not) save on rent, but without land ownership (which could happen if small lots were for sale) tiny houses only will go down in price every year.

I want to have one of these for longer, like a house would. Is there anything I can do to have it last about 60-100 years without having to replace it due to it just being no good anymore or suitable for a human to live in even with regularly replacing things, cleaning, all basic things you have to do to have it last its maximum time. I understand you still have to do maintenance regularly, But I mean not having to replace the whole camper, RV, Tiny Home because it's just no good anymore. Or is that not something that can be changed and doable?. Because over time isn't that just a lot of money down the drain having to buy a new mobile home or build a Tiny house every 20-30 years.

Living in a space that is just the right size, instead of in a too large space with unused rooms that you have the expense of heating and cooling, is a good thing. But a small living space that sits on borrowed land is NOT a good thing because this puts you at the mercy of the landowner. Ditto for living in a space that violates local ordinances and could result in fines and eviction notices. Living in a small space that does not have a washer and either a dryer or clothes line is NOT a good thing because this means you have the expense of a laundromat or you have to depend upon the goodwill of someone who does own a washer and dryer. A small space that lacks proper insulation and is hard to heat in the winter or keep cool in the summer is NOT a good thing. Investing your hard earned money in a structure that is not well built, not well insulated, lacks the modern conveniences, sits on land you do not own and DOES NOT appreciate in value is a poor use of your money. Yes, building a tiny house might be a fun hobby, but it is probably not a good investment of your money unless you sell it right away to someone who does not know any better.
Consider deeply frugal living, renting a room for cheap in someone's home and saving up for a down payment that covers half the sticker price of a new studio or one bedroom condo or cottage that is in compliance with the local building codes and that has a washer/dryer and other modern conveniences. Get yourself a 15 year mortgage of the type that includes payment on some of the loan principle with every payment, that does not penalize early paying off of the loan and do pay off that loan EARLY. Remember that buying the use of someone else's money (a loan) is per dollar
the most expensive thing you can buy. Once you own free and clear a living space that has quality construction and that you maintain in excellent condition, this investment will likely increase in value over the years instead of depreciate in value. Even if your situation changes and you need to move to a larger home, that small home that you own can become a source for rental income or can be sold to help you pay cash for that larger home.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Being custom isn't usually a big issue and It just depends on the design and how it is being optimized, as it's mainly a question of how much would need to be changed to adjust it for changing needs.
Some custom homes are specifically designed to be modular for easy changing, for example. Or the design simply can have things re-arranged to adjust it, provided those possibilities were accounted for in the original design and thus room for those changes are part of the design tolerance allowances.
But even when that's not the case, mind that when you own it you can always renovate and remodel it and turn it into a completely different home. Some people even make significant changes to their homes over the years and if it's on a land that you own you can always add to it and do other modifications.
It'll just all have to be considered as part of the things to consider for the budget you will be working with and whether you can account for things you may need later at the very start or deal with it when the time comes...
Assuming it'll be a long term plan and not a short term as some people will just get a different home later. In which case resale value may be the dominant concern for the first home rather than future proofing... So it depends...

And environmentally, apartment living is just better. I wish people put the passion they have for tiny house living into pushing for environmentally responsible high-density housing.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@cminmd0041 - In terms of environment, apartment living isn't really better.
It just may seem so if you only compare a single apartment to a traditional house but that comparisons quickly reverses once you factor that apartment building will be much larger and scale up to sky-scraper high-rises that will have a much bigger negative impact on the environment and be much more wasteful of resources, with far higher energy demand, etc.
Smaller structures are inherently going to be more efficient than larger structures and having the freedom to customize allows for more efficient use of resources than a large monolithic structure that has to work for everyone as a one size fits all solution.
But this hasn't stopped environmental responsibility being pushed everywhere. Some cities are promoting community food gardens on roof-tops for example. More and more people are growing things in their apartments and trying to reduce how much waste they generate.
The movement is effecting high density-housing areas... But there's just only so much they can do and more people need to be willing to be part of the effort to maximize its effect...
Though, there's are efforts to come up with better solutions. Like housing units that can be individually moved but still be stacked to form apartment complexes, which can provide more flexibility and adaptability to help reduce the environmental impact and increase efficient use of resources...
Along with a long list of new building products and technology that are going to come to market in the next decade or so that will help as well...

How is this so different than an RV? I mean other than the way it looks? Seems like these aren’t really made for going down the road at 60mph for 1000 miles. Just curious.

According to my own county's planner, many officials think of these as "RV's" at least in terms of how they sit on the land. In that case, they require all the same kinds of hookups that you would require of someone permanently keeping a 40ft trailer on a piece of land - mainly septic and sanitation is the biggest concern.

It often gets confused because people aren't used to thinking of anything on wheels being anything but a vehicle or an RV but the actual difference is how it is built and what it's intended for...
Basically, RV's are intended as recreational vehicles and can be as minimal as a tent. While a tiny houses is meant for full time living and is constructed like a house with much higher minimal standards than a RV.
RV's are tied to the wheels because that defines what they are... But tiny houses can be on anything and even be put into a foundation like a traditional house.
Most just put tiny houses on wheels to get around the zoning restrictions that prevent them from just building a tiny house on foundation or to help keep costs low without needing as much infrastructure and other property costs that a traditional house normally requires.
Though, a few do it for mobility or just assurance in case they need to move in an emergency.
Otherwise, Tiny Houses are not meant for regular traveling like RV's are and are more just a flexible housing option that can be more easily adapted to a variety of needs.

Tiny houses can be permanently constructed on a plot of land, just like any other house. However, many areas in the United States have adopted building codes that require X amount of square footage per person, minimum, as a way to prevent extremely dense housing. This forces many tiny houses to be built on wheels and according to RV or mobile home codes, so that they are technically, under the law, "mobile", though not at highway speeds.

@@ZeoCyberG Depends on the RV or camper/caravan. Anything bigger than a small one tends to have things like a bathroom with at least a shower, kitchen, a bedroom or two, and commons area.
That's much more content than a tent.

With all the issues you just talked about it might be better to just live in a car. There are no intake or out take issues. Yes there are good storage issues some parking issues
But it might be easier in a car
What about trailer parks no ones, talking about that kind of life

You make good sense. I've seen people have a tiny house built and the price per sq foot is more than a NY apartment build.
1 guy paid $120000 for 250 sq feet and then had to buy a towing vehicle to move it. Just saying $200000 for 250 sq ft is high.

      inputs and outputs
      - quel types des toilettes et où vas-tu aller chercher de l'eau
      - la source de l'électricité
Désolé, je suis américain et pas très bilingue :') mais j'espère que je peux aider les français qui veulent comprendre cette vidéo

Small houses are nothing new. Calling an RV that is not built to a state building a "Tiny House" is just substandard housing in my book. The tiny house movement is not much different than the manufactured trailer movement we saw many years ago. Quality houses they are not. If you really want to go cheap as possible just live in van down by the river.

I've watched video after video and I've only seen two or three homes I might consider. All that I liked had a deck and screened porch-which is essential for me. And shade! The boxes in the sun are not appealing at all.

$ per square living space its just not worth it unless you are living in a blue state with housing starting at 1 million dollars. In the south and midwest, you can buy a full house, rv, mobile home, or trailer for the same price or less then a self built tiny house with absolutely zero effort and no loft beds. All of these options are able to be made off grid with little to no effort. And they are all legal and insurable. The only benefit to building your own tiny house is the luxury of saying "I did it."

Lots of great tips before going Tiny!!!
I'm in one of those situations where it'd be hard to live/park my tiny legally near where I work. That is my biggest hurdle for going tiny.
i'm currently debating if it's worth moving in 2-5 years to go tiny. Either way I'm saving up so I can build something of my own design in 2-5 years. 😃

Living in a camper van; or a refurbished passenger bus; or school bus; or a cargo truck; or some other types of vehicles that are large enough to live in seems less expensive than owning a tiny house.

If you park a house on wheels out in the country, think how easy it would be for someone to come along and steal it. You'd never see it again and you're also not insured, so you would lose everything.

I’ve wanted a tiny home for the last four years but the more I learn about the legality of it I’m extremely discouraged. I’ve always had to move around never having my own place to call home since I was 16. I’m in America and I thought it would be legalized by now. Ugh I’m so bummed. I feel like it’s just a pipe dream and me watching these amazing videos of tours and builds is just a waste of time.

A tiny house is a small house in comparison to conventional homes, A tiny house *on wheels* is the decked out trailer. There is a nuance but many people like to build on wheels to be able to move or travel easier
