- Dorothy Donegan (April 6, 1922 - May 19, 1998) was an American classically trained jazz pianist primarily known for performing
in the stride piano and boogie-woogie style. She also played bop, swing jazz, and classical music. Obituaries for her argued that
her flamboyant personality, tendency to mix unrelated genres in the same concert, and willingness to do lounge music may have
caused her to be undervalued in jazz circles.
Donegan was born and grew up in Chicago, Illinois and began studying classical piano at age six. In her early years, she
studied at the Chicago Musical College and by age eight her potential was recognized. In the 1940s she became Art Tatum's
protégée and in 1942 she made her recording debut. She appeared in Sensations of 1945 with Cab Calloway, Gene Rodgers
and W. C. Fields and was known for her work in Chicago nightclubs. She began a trio in 1945, but then returned to solo work. She expressed some interest in returning to classical music after this.

Jealousy. That is the only reason I can think that she was not premiered around the world. She was able to symbiotically meld two completely different forms of music where others flailed. She was wonderful. This is amazing.
When you true to yourself don't expect The impossarios to be true to you. Most of them are exploiters, and. If no,t they have their favorite. And sometimes it's not one of the other but both.
In my opinion, Dorothy Donegan was in the top five greatest jazz pianists of the 20th century.

@@ChuckParDueMusic Nat King Cole is an interesting choice, very understated -- I could never pick a top 5, as so many players have offered so many different things. Tristano, Hines, Gardner, Morton, Powell, Marmarosa, Waller, Gaillard, Kelly, Haig, Monk, Newborn... Do we base our judgement upon who best communicates the vibe they intend?

@@ChuckParDueMusic Yeah - you can hear how he affected his touch, the shaping of lines and working in ensembles. Likewise, Cole loved Hines and Wilson and you can hear how they influenced his perspective.
From the rhythmic/ensemble side, I feel that Tatum encountered limitations in his approach that the next generation resolved. They all shared the music and elevated each other - yet the industry can only choose a handful to make household names.
Wow, incredible! No wonder Art Tatum said she was the only person that made him practice.
Had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Donegan play in 1946 (77 years ago) at Indianapolis. Just came across this video playing a North Sea Jazz Festival. Still working it. FANTASTIC
Dorothy should not have been missing from jazz history. Her name is synonymous with the jazz greats.

Fascinating to hear this. I read somewhere that Oscar Peterson was a big fan of Dorothy Donegan. You can hear some of the Art Tatum influence in her playing, at times she has an Erroll Garner-ish sound too. For some reason women have often not been taken seriously in jazz, unless they are singers of course. She certainly deserves more recognition 25 years after she passed away.

I never saw Oscar play any double stops, and Tatum rarely and only briefly. at 9:15 she plays them and sustained them, they are the true signs of a great pianistic technique!

I did not see Dorothy in my life so far & I'm 85 . My loss , but at least I got to her her & I believe Dorothy was a true master of her instrument . A real force of nature . As for me I'm happy to have met her through this medium . Thanks for posting . .
Dorothy Donegan was a true, not just piano but musical virtuoso genius. An all time great pianist, another one that could master whatever genre she embraced. Mind blowing facility & technique.

Dorothy Donegan was the most sophisticated pianist on stage I have ever heard. - Charles Aznavour loved her play when she performed 1980 at Swiss romand Television in « La Grand Roue » in Geneva, Switzerland, with world renowned artists. Two concert followed at new morning jazz club and the public became crazy and the critics in « 24 heures » and other news paper loved her outstanding performance. Beat Mossdorf.

I was a Jazz drummer back in the early 70's played in the big bands in Africa . I know all the Jazz great's , but , I just by chance I bump into her on the network , she is a very good entertainer .

It's so amazing to read comments written within the past several days and some by people who knew her. I had a favorite, Gene Harris, who I listened to almost weekly before he started touring and has since passed away. You would enjoy him. But this woman is in a class of her own.
How is it possible that I had never even heard of this extraordinarily gifted pianist before? Not until reading the obit of an old friend who used to gig with her! Surely do wish I'd had the good fortune to hear her play live, which I'm sure wouldn't have been too far out of my way during my travels.

@@franciscouderq1100 I was not comparing her jazz to Uja's Classical, but the few examples of Dorothy performing classical (real and improvised), and Uja's classical. In this case I am comparing pears with pears and btw you will excuse me, but I don't need your approval.
Better comparison would perhaps be Hiromi Uehara, who is also a classically trained jazz virtuoso like Dorothy but who is in her 40's.

She has many unique stylistic elements and techniques distinct from Tatum. More polished in some ways and less repetitive than Tatum. I hear Oscar Peterson type motifs, so she probably influenced him.
One wonders how Dorothy would handle Rachmaninov in her own special way? Perhaps an inappropriate question but the lady has both energy and terrific ability so one just speculates on what magic might come about.
She had classical training
It's a good question. Her mentor, Art Tatum in the 1940's, was also a brilliant classical pianist in his spare time. Rachmaninov himself once commented that he could copy Tatum's notes but couldn't match his rhythm.
I have seen her perform at Newport-She was great. This was I think early 1990's also Markis Roberts at the same Festival. Either George Benson or Ray Charles were the Headliner.
Dorothy was number one , nobody could follow her , period .
