When I first read about and started using countersteering, about 11 years ago, I was shocked at how well it worked. When I told a couple of "biker" guys at work about it, they looked at me like I had 3 heads....until they tried it and were shocked. I have done nothing else since.

You have been countersteering since the first day you rode a bicycle. The only practical way to steer a two wheeled vehicle.

You were likely using counter steering unconsciously all along. It's really impossible to steer a motorcycle without using counter steering. People learn it intuitively but do not learn how to use it assertively during collision avoidance. So during collisions, they start making mistakes. Target fixation, improper use of brakes, stopping the use of handlebar input at all.

Old School calls this twitch steering. You have to get the bike under you for the turn, left twitch swings the wheels out left and leans the bike RIGHT and viceaversa. people learn this in there very first fall on a bicycle (becomes instinct and never thought of again). Panic and your brain throws all the thinking (usually wrong) into your situation. Threw a leg over my first bike in 1962 and never dropped one on the street since. That said I have broken several bones, gravel rash"d much of my hide and escaped brain dead (destroyed two helmets) twice while off road, motocross/desert races, and etc.. THIS VIDEO SHOULD BE MANDATORY FOR EVERY ONE WHO RIDES A MOTORBIKE,

After riding bicycles and motorcycles for decades, I took the motorcycle rider safety course with my son when he wanted to start riding. Counter Steering was my biggest take away from the class. I couldn't feel it on the small Suzuki's we were riding at low speed, but on the highway it was one of the most awesome feelings I have experience in a long time. A good topic to bring up hear and a really scary video.

Yeah, if he would just pushed right he would have slipped right thru that turn and continued on his way. He wasn't really even going that fast for that road (around 55 MPH) but was definitely going too fast for his skill level. I feel bad for him (and glad he survived) because that accident was easily avoidable.

What do you mean by "push" in this sense. You mean counter steer as in turn right? Or do you mean push a lean. Lean right.

if you need an explanation, when you push left, the handlebar would turn to right, thus initiate the counter steering.

The rider accidentally applied a little too much front brake as he spotted the truck - it looks like the front wheel started to wash out. He let the front brake go and at that moment the front end starts wobbling. The wobbling handlebars cause his throttle hand to alternately pull the throttle back and then let it go. This all causes him to essentially lose control of his steering and he drifts into the path of the truck.
This accident really isn't about countersteering at all. It's about the rider riding in excess of their skills. Bad brake control. Chickening out on leaning the bike further into the turn. Bad brake control once the bike starts wobbling. Finally losing all control of steering and braking before he hits the truck.

Counter steerig totally baffles brand new and slow riders becuase it actually seems to make no sense. It does take practice at enough speed to actually perceive the cause and effect which tends to be on the subtle side for sure...but at slow speeds it is "wtf i have to turn the bars the direction I want to go ...NOT "counter "steer!. wth?" ..But a lot of videos seem to ignore this reality like i say baffling brand new or ultra slow riders

I don't think he repeatedly tried to steer the bike to the right. I think he clamped down hard on the grips and the bike started wobbling. On top of that, he froze and basically did no more steering. Target fixation and panic.

  • @bobbabai
    @bobbabai หลายเดือนก่อน

The narrator isn't describing the accident correctly at all. Here's what seems to be happening, which really only has to do with countersteering indirectly.
    1. Rider enters the curve and realizes he's going too fast and starts applying front brake.
    2. Rider spots truck and likely squeezes the front brake a little harder and the front tire begins to wash out.
    3. Rider releases the front brake
    4. The bike starts wobbling. Ryder loses control of his throttle and starts alternately applying more throttle and then less throttle as the right handlebar oscillates away from him and toward him.
    5. Rider likely stops trying to steer to the right because of the wobble which he doesn't know how to deal with.
    6. The bike drifts into the path of the truck and collides.

That's what I THOUGHT too. Until I got on my bike next day and TESTED it. If you think something doesn't make sense, I understand, BUT, until you have actually TRIED it to see for yourself, words will mean nothing to you. Ever heard of "JUST DO IT." ??? There are a number of Half empty glass people in the world. When an EXPERT Rider gives you a tip and also the consequences of improper steering, MAYBE You might wanna listen. My knowledge of this came in 1980, and I always employ counter steering in all of my rides since, ESPECIALLY in 2 lane switch backs.

This is a pretty bad explanation of countersteering.
He gets the explanation about initiating the lean correct. But he never says anything about relaxing the forces on the handlebar to keep the bike leaned in a stable turn. And then he says nothing about using countersteering again to straighten the bike up again.
He also describes what the rider is doing badly. I don't think the rider is repeatedly trying to turn right. I think his motorcycle is wobbling, probably because he has a death grip on the bars and who knows what other factors are in play, such as bad seating position or bad tire pressure or loose frame and wheel and fork components.
The voiceover also fails to describe countersteering completely. Particularly when you have reached your desired lean angle and you relax force on that bars to keep the bike in a stabilized turn. And then he fails to describe using countersteering again in the opposite direction to straighten the bike up again.
