    Genuinely the best version of the Makuta we ever saw. Not a physical race of evil beings, but a concept. The embodiment of nothing.

    That intro, my God... it really sums up the essence of the civilization on Mata Nui. When you think about it, the Turaga and Matoran were basically refugees from a fallen, technologically-advanced civilization that managed to escape. The Matorans' minds were wiped from the before-time, but the Turagas' weren't, so they, the new leaders of this post-apocalyptic tribe, managed to mask (no pun intended) the complex past and keep the Matoran pacified and under control by illustrating their history and situation in this way, like tribal Polynesian mythology. With stones, metaphors, myths, legends. A colossus robot, Mata Nui, referred to as a 'Great Spirit' put to sleep by a mystical, distant 'Makuta'. Mata Nui was like their god, Makuta like their satan. The complexities of the world literally below them were masked in this way, the Toa were 'legends' sent from 'above,' as opposed to having been programmed by the Great Beings to be launched from the robot in times of its catastrophic meltdown. Makuta was likened to a monster or devil-type dark force, as opposed to being a technologically-advanced member of a species of Makuta that were trying to take over the universe below. These are refugees from a technologically-advanced metropolis that were far removed from their home and original duties, so the Turaga had to keep them pacified and controlled with these sorts of distant myths. It must have been terrifying, going from Toa to Turaga, having no protection left, and having this psychotic maniac living beneath you waiting for the day he could strike, never knowing if he'd keep his word or not or if he would just come wipe them out for bloodsport. You had to keep everyone under control and just hope that the prophesied Toa would indeed show up some day before it was too late.

    I remember when the very first chapter of that game was released and all you could do was walk up the beach, to see Tahu's silhouette in the smoke of the lava flow. The feeling of foreboding when he slowly turns to look at you with his big red eyes, still makes my heart beat with excitement a little bit. The original Mata Nui and early Metru Nui generations were what shaped my childhood. The stuff that came after that was just too overly complicated and went off in a direction that for me, completely wrecked the feel of the original sets. I'm really surprised that they're trying to start from scratch again now, it will just never have that same feel.

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      TheImperialTeacher True, but that's the case with all stories that last long enough - eventually they either have to expand and become bigger and more complicated or they wither and die.
      While I agree that they maybe should have gone in some different directions with the old story, I at least have to give them credit for trying to tie it all together, especially since in the beginning they were going by the seat of their pants and never expected it to get as big as it did.
      I'm actually excited for the new story; hopefully they learned their lessons from the old Bionicle and even Hero Factory and have put a little more thought and planning into the new story so that it's more cohesive from the beginning. It also seems to me that they're leaving the new story open to reconnect with the old story at some point if the fans want that to happen bad enough.

    • @nikajinpusno9563
      @nikajinpusno9563 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that the early years had a simple duality in the story, and a certain charm. But the story got more complex I think party to reflect the fandom which was also growing with the franchise. The story had to reflect the increasing complexity of adolescence. One thing you can definitely say is that they always kept up the feeling of mystery and intrigue throughout all years. I do agree however that gen 1 got a little too complex past 2008 I'd say. It would have been cool of course if they just tied it all together by creating a 2nd generation as a continuation of the old story after 2009/2010, but go back to basics and start small again - since we've already would have had 10 years of rich storyline by that point. They kind tried this with the 2009 Glatorian wave, but it wasn't as effective. It was foreshadowing the dumb-founded 2015 disaster of a storyline.

    Gathered friends, listen now to our legend of the *_BIONICLE_*
    In the time before time, the Great Spirit descended from the heavens, carrying with him the ones called the _Matoran,_ to this island paradise. We were separate and without purpose, so the great spirit blessed us with the _Three Virtues: Unity, Duty and Destiny._ We embraced these gifts and in gratitude named our home _Mata Nui,_ after the great spirit himself.
    But our happiness was not to last. Mata Nui's brother, _Makuta,_ was jealous of these honors and betrayed him. Makuta cast a spell over Mata Nui, who fell in a deep slumber. Makuta's power dominated the land, as fields withered away and sunlight grew cold, and ancient values were forgotten.
    Still, all hope was not lost. Legends told of six mighty heroes, the _Toa,_ who would arrive to save Mata Nui. Time would reveal that these were not simply myths-for the Toa did appear on the shores of the island. They arrived with no memory, no knowledge of one another - but they pledged to defend Mata Nui and its people against the darkness.
    *Tahu,* the fierce Toa Of Fire.
    *Lewa,* the agile Toa Of Air.
    *Onua,* the wise Toa Of Earth.
    *Gali,* the graceful Toa Of Water.
    *Pohatu,* the powerful Toa Of Stone.
    *Kopaka,* the calculating Toa Of Ice.
    Great warriors with great power, drawn from the very elements themselves. Together, they were Six Heroes with one destiny: to defeat Makuta and save Mata Nui.
    This is their story....

    My god, it's incredible watching this after more than a decade and still being entertained.
    I didn't realize how important each of the Matoran were - and would become later on - in the series. I like that many of them mentioned here would go on to become Toa, and I especially love that Takua was once a loner who eventually became the Toa of Light. I totally forgot that he was just a little guy who was disliked by everyone, and the fact that he becomes their savior makes me really warm inside.

    Why did Lego never make a movie about the Quest for the Masks, or the Bohrok/Bohrok Kal? These stories were so epic, and giving the Matoren a chance to be heroes alongside the Toa would have been amazing - unlike Mask of Light, where they're always shown to be helpless.

There was somewhat of a childlike innocence to all the characters but when things got tough, they fought like true heroes. Thats why I always love Bionicle.
