BIONICLE Fan Film - Struggle in the Drifts

So here it is. Not sure about the title, I think it sounds lame, but it's the product that matters.
Pretty lengthly description coming up because there's a lot I want to cover:
I have been working on this thing since the end of September 2012, and even with all its faults, it's been a tremendous amount of work getting it done. Most of us are probably aware how BIONICLE-related fan film projects rarely ever come to fruition, and I can see why -- mostly thinking of the famous canceled fan movie Quest of the Toa. Even though mine is obviously not a feature-length presentation, and it's much less ambitious and technically sophisticated, it was still incredibly hard and complicated to pull off.
As for the content, I decided to go with this story and setting mostly because there simply aren't that many animations about the 2002 Bohrok Saga (though I know that other fans have also been busy creating their interpretations), and because it's what I had the most assets for -- likewise, the Ko-Wahi Drifts proved to be a perfect setting because the landscape's bareness. Most other regions of the island would have fried my PC.
Even what little is there on screen took ages to render, which is also the reason why it's such a low-def video. Enlarging the screen size and increasing the resolution would have yielded less shitty-looking results, but would also have extended rendering times far too much. So I chose to compromise: the video looks like crap but you don't have to wait another year or two to see the finished result.
While that development time may sound a bit too much considering the technical quality and length of the film, that's mostly because I had to use someone else's PC to animate and render everything beyond the 5:10 mark. My computer simply gave up at that point, and I only had limited access to any other PCs. This is also why I had to leave in some animation errors or unsatisfactory shot set-ups. Had my PC been up to the job, I'd probably have gone back to correct some of these. The models are also pretty bare and have their issues, but I'm not planning on using them in any future vids.
I'm positive that the story presentation contradicts canon material in many places, that the Krana powers are all wrong, and I don't even think that it fits into the official timeline that well either. But, like the creators of the official DVD movies, I took some artistic liberties with the lore here and there to allow for a (hopefully) better mini-film. So, similar to how they gave the Rahaga rotor blades to be able to fly, I made the Golden Masks be able to change shape, 'cause it suited my goals better (and it just looks cooler).
The lighter tone, gags and of course the subtitles are deliberate nods to the old Flash videos. I wanted to avoid doing voices because it would've been way too much of a fuss, and I had no "set" script either. This is also why the video descends into slight madness as it goes on -- I had plans for how to do the beginning and the end, but figuring out the middle part was complicated. Originally, the part at 4:40 would have been followed by 8:30, but I thought that a sudden snowstorm would have fit to the music perfectly, so I ended up animating that whole in-between part on the fly. Actually, much of what happens in the video has been based purely on the music. Yeah, the pacing suffers a bit as a result, but eh, bear with me guys and gals. If I make another one, I'll make sure to plan out everything beforehand.
I know the action is pretty watered-down. I didn't even intend to include any genuine action scenes beyond some mild pushing and shoving around, and some creative usage of elemental or mask powers. I quickly slapped together that fight scene between Kopaka and the Kohrak just to have a bit more action in there. Sorry if it turned out sloppy -- I'll promise to plan out any potential action scenes better in future videos.
The music is from The Legend Reborn movie, by the way. Turns out there really were some usable tunes in there. Of course, for supplying these tracks, as well as a lot of the general sound effects, major props have to be given to the folks behind the BioMedia Project.
I know it isn't to everyone's liking, but I hope that the finished film doesn't offend your beliefs on what a BIONICLE fan movie "should" be like too much, and even if it isn't what you had hoped for, you can at least appreciate the effort I put into making this tribute. A tribute for a defunct toy and story-line that's in sore need of fan-created content if it wants to avoid sinking into oblivion, and to a fandom that's seemingly becoming increasingly more disjointed.
    In Hungarian/magyarul:
Ezt csináltam jó sokáig. Nem, nem ez kell a népnek, basszus, de meg akartam csinálni, úgyhogy kuss.
Animated in Blender. Editing and after-effects done in Sony Vegas Pro 8.0.
Characters and concept belong to The LEGO Group.

That is brilliant! It's hard to think it's a fan film because for one, the animation is a lot like from Bionicle: The Game, only even more true to the sets. Pohatu and Kopaka's personalities were spot on, Pohatu's comic relief bits were very well written, Kopaka's cold personality but secret warm side were executed brilliantly, the Krana blood was really well done, the Bohrok Va was adorable, Kopeke was amazing. But the best of all: the fighting. That was truly how Toa fight, not just with brawn but also with their elemental and mask powers, manipulating the environment to their advantage. That made me feel right back at home in Mata Nui. Bravo!

Best. Bionicle. Fan film. Ever... We really need more films like this that involve the classic Bionicles. Who cares if there's violence?? They're robots! Who cares that it wasn't super high definition?? It doesn't matter much if you can see what's happening. Bro, you are going places. That was amazing. I'd love to see more films like this from you. Loved the comedy, the power, and the violence. This is a masterpiece. Voice actors would've been nice, but I understand that's difficult to do unless you have really expensive recording equipment. Have you ever considered animating the classic Bionicle comics? Not to be frame by frame identical, but to tell the story? Dude, if you could pull that off... You'd be a legend. You already are one in my book though. I'm probs gonna watch this ten times a month. XD

+Elliot Cole Thanks for the compliments, much appreciated.
Have thought about adapting scenes from the actual canon, but nothing too complicated. Still learning how to handle larger environments and multiple characters in the same scene, not to mention effects. Maybe once (or if) I'm done with my current projects, which are way more ambitious than anything I attempted so far, I'll look into it.

They could change their masks in the online clips but I don't think that was canon. In the comics, every time they used a different power, the Gold Masks remained the same shape. I followed the online animations' idea because it looked more interesting.

At first I was a little off-put by the relative childishness of the film, but in the end I came to appreciate it, because it fits the medium well. The anime-esque sweat drop threw me for a loop too, but when it froze I genuinely chuckled. It was clever.
All in all, I am fantastically impressed. Your knowledge of the lore is impressive as well, and you weren't afraid to take it in a few personal directions.

+Vrahno Your representations of the characters was spot on too. When I write Kopaka, I'm always concerned about balancing his serious nature with his underlying emotions. Honestly, this kind of thing is exactly what Gen 1 Bionicle fans have been hoping for years.
I'd pay legit money to see this fully produced, but I doubt LEGO would permit it. After all, they gotta make sure to bury years of hard work and deep lore with watered down bullshit.

Wow, this is a great fan made project. This was really fun to watch and makes a great story to remind me of the good old days when BIONICLE began.
I'm glad you made the voices mute and used subtitles. This made me feel more like the Toa and Bohrok were robots. I wasn't too sure on the Bohrok lines "Clean All, Everything Must Be Cleaned!" It's good they sound like something a robot would say, but I always thought of the Bohrok as mindless beasts like the Rakshi where they just have a monstrous voice to make them sound evil.
It's good I could see a small amount of facial expression and body movement that makes the toa a bit human, not too much which is great.
And LOL to the big tear drop that shows Pohatu was shocked. That was really clever of you to make Kopaka freeze it and drop to the floor. That's a great way to break the 4th Wall.
The ending was a chuckle too :D Seeing Kopeke return to find the statue head.
I know this project took 2 years for you, but Oh My Word I would watch this as a Television Series in this quality!
A huge round of applause to you my friend! :)

Fred Jones Not sure where one would draw the line. I mean the Glatorian/Agori better suit the term "cyborgs" since they were originally organic and gained mechanical implants, while inhabitants of the Matoran Universe are built as machines with organic parts. Like a...reverse-cyborg, I guess.
Tulf42 The Bohrok's lines were actually quite accurate. They're obsessed with their job of cleaning it all.

It's good to know I don't know all the facts of Bionicle after being with them for all 10 years

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Tulf42 Indeed. Even I don't know a lot, although most of what I don't know consists of side-stories and organisations I never paid much attention to, like the Order of Mata Nui or the Nynrah Ghosts.
I'm actually thinking back, and I can't remember if the Bohrok ever said anything to themselves, but I do know that they could speak through Lewa when he was taken over temporarily. And their mission is to clean, since the whole point is that Mata Nui the island is formed as camoflage whenever the Matoran Universe lands and hides on a planet. When it prepares to take off, the Bohrok clear the island of any life (using Krana to take over the minds of intruders) and return to the nest. It's actually kinda funny because near the end of the story, the Toa Nuva awaken the Bohrok and freed the Bahrag and helped them clear the island.

Absolutely amazing, the sheer amount of nostalgia is almost overwhelming! The animation is perfect and the atmosphere is just like in 2002! I like the light-hearted feeling in this, cause that's more how Bionicle was back then, when it wasn't so dark yet. Although the "killing" of a Kohrak Va and that Kohrak at the end contradicts this, but yeah. Amazing job!

This is absolutely stunning. The combination of visual storytelling and great character development were hallmarks for what I would ever consider a Bionicle TV Series, and here they're portrayed perfectly. Although I think the soundmixing and actual rendering need a bit of work, the animation itself is perfectly expressive and fluid, and I hope you'll do another one in the future!

I love this so much there's so much style and charisma present I love how the Toa are still slightly childish since really they're so young and new to the Toa business. A prime example of not needing state of the art visual effects (no offence🤪) to make a fun and fulfilling animation. This very easily could have come from a mid 2000s Nickelodeon show or something. I also appreciate that they don't use voices but still hold a dialogue and utilising musical cues, an interesting stylistic choice, kinda reminds me of silent films or cartoons

    Awesome work, Vrahno!
The animation quality is quite good, and the music and sound effects are well-synced to the action. The overall tone is fantastic and evocative of the Mata Nui Online Game, Bohrok Online Animations, and even the BIONICLE movies to an extent. Great balance of humor and action. The anime-style sweat drop on Pohatu looked a bit peculiar in 3D CGI, though, but that's my main aesthetic grumble (and the gag where it freezes from the Ko-Wahi cold still elicited a giggle from me). The story and action scenes were very clever.
    Also, KopakaXPohatu OTP!

This is an amazing bit of animation here. I really like how close to the sets all the characters were, and the bits you changed were good too, especially with the Toa heads and such. The fight scenes, while a little slow at times, were still excellent, and some great usage of the Kanohi and Krana powers. Further more, the story perfectly captures the feel, for me anyway, of the 2002 saga and the Toa's personalities. Very well done!

  • @aaroncee615
    @aaroncee615 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That final bohrok kill was brutal. I liked it. Overall very well done, just from watching I could tell that you strove to make a film more geared towards the aging bionicle fanbase, but without gratuitous language like some others I've seen (which is an improvement, by the way). You did an excellent job capturing both toa's character, and Kopaka's winking was a clever twist to his personality. Of course, a criticism would be the sluggish movements in the fight scenes, but that doesn't detract much from the overall experience. I also appreciate the use of sound effects from MNOLG. That was a fine addition that deepened the film's bionicle-esque feel. Very nice work, you should be proud of this. :D

So this has been popping up in my recommended feed for a while and finally got around to watching it.
I'm regretting that it took so long; this was great. Like some others have said, the fights were a little ... "floaty" is the best word I saw used to describe it, but that's a minor flaw. The characterizations, the animations, the callbacks to other Bionicle media and stories (loved when Pohatu moon-walked on the ice like in his official intro animation!) and the sound design were spot on.
I especially liked how well you handled Pohatu's inexperience with the ice, like at the 6:30 mark. That made me literally laugh out loud at how goofy but believably in-character it was. Most of the humor actually was like that; kinda goofy but in character for Kopaka and Pohatu not to mention fitting well with the general tone of the early 2001-2002 Bionicle stories.
I'm going to have to subscribe so I can come back later and check out your other work.

dude, awesome movie. so much better than the Mask of Light. funny, beautifully animated, gorgeous aesthetic and the story telling was fluid. Fight choreographing was top notch, I cannot give this enough praise.
I am an animation graduate, so i know how this stuff is done, i will be honest, this in comparison to me has put me to shame :)
I know how hard it is to animate even a minute of animation (my primary focus was in Stop Motion XD) but i would have loved a feature length movie of this. I'd buy a copy XD and i would contribute to the gofundme or whatever crowd funding websites are still being used XD
In a 17 minute time frame you managed to fit in the right amount of everything. Fighting, story telling, exposition, banter, character personality. This is the perfect example of "Show dont Tell" (Showing what is happened not explaining what is happening XD) you did this in spades. The only exposition given is what was necessary in character communication. not directed to the audience.
You effectively demonstrated the Bohrok Hordes, Kohrok's personality, Krana ability. My favourite bit? Start to End really. but if i had to pick, it would be when Pohatu was using process of elimination to find the Sheilding Krana.
All in all, this is a perfect example of "What is hollywood doing?" they have billions of dollars in funding and they end up with content at a fraction of this quality. Like i always say to friends and family: "Hollywood has a budget of billions, youtubers sometimes have no budget, but quality shows where it needs to"
I am going to be watching this regularly, its just too good.
well done on making something brilliant here dude :)

I love this, it's so well done and really captures the spirit of the storyline of 2001-3, back then it was a deep plot already sure but it was still funny and loveable and not too dark and brooding. The animations feel smooth and are much more enjoyable than all the stopmotions everyone makes, if this were a tv show I would do everything to watch it whenever it would air.

    • @starscreamofvos
      @starscreamofvos 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Actually, if you read the online serials and even some of the books, it says how a toa or matoran or any other character would "curse" when something annoying or bad happened. Greg Farshtey never wrote down the actual words because he would have gotten in trouble for that, but, he made the BIONICLE universe as "adult" as he could get away with. I know one specific incident is from the online serial, "Brothers in Arms" where Mazeka was fighting Vultraz in a flashback and he kicked Vultraz off a cliff and thought he had died, and then it says that he "cursed out loud" before walking away. He was mad about having to kill Vultraz and made his feelings known through his langauge.
Besides, adding the curse words makes it better because we all know that Kopaka has a "potty mouth." ;)
