A Kind Of Magic is your worst? WOW! Jazz would probably be my worst if I'm not ranking Flash Gordon, lol! It has 3 good songs on it and the rest is pretty much trash, lol! Mustapha might be the worst Queen song EVER!!! A Kind Of Magic would definitely be top ten for me and possibly top five!
(At Queen II right now) I definitely disagree with putting Father To Son on the end of the album, but otherwise loving this video so far! When you put Liar in the top tier, I knew I was going to trust this video LOL Awesome stuff! *hang on, you missed Ogre Battle! (NEVERMIND! got to the ogre battle part in Sheer Heart Attack) *I don't know if you knew this, but Brian wrote Now I'm Here as a thank you to Mott The Hoople for taking them across the world as Mott's support act. (hence lyrics like 'Down in the city just Hoople and me'), so a lot of the lyrics make more sense when you have that context. *21:37 I would've called the tier for cheesy songs "Sweet like some kind of cheese" *21:49 It was Roger that didn't like You're My Best Friend. He said something like "I'm not fucking singing 'Happy at home'", but you're right that Freddie didn't like the wurlitzer piano, called it "tinny and horrible" *LETS GOOO GOOD TAKE ON THE PROPHETS SONG LMAO *34:58 I personally disagree, pretty much everyone on places like The Queen Discord really love White Man. Especially the people into the live performance recordings, the medley with White Man and The Prophet's Song is a live favourite. But yes it's definitely one of Queen's most underrated. (AGGHH IT'S ACTUALLY "but forgot how to love" 36:20) *nahhhh sorry GDML is awesome
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this video! I love Queen so much and people that know me are definitely tired of hearing me talk about them lol. So to have a video almost an hour and a half long dedicated to talking about all their music, chef’s kiss. I was cracking up at the parts where you were talking about Fun It and had the clip of Freddie from IGSM “Roger what did you do??” (when the penguin pooped on the couch), Las Palabras de Amor being “Walmart Teo Torriatte” and being in the shower listening to Who Wants to Live Forever transitioning to Fat Bottomed Girls. I agree with pretty much all the rankings, maybe a few differences here or there. From Freddie’s solo career I’d say “Living On My Own” is probably my favorite. Other songs I like from Queen that don’t usually get talked about apart from their greatest hits; Back Chat, Staying Power, White Queen, Stone Cold Crazy, Liar, Dragon Attack, It’s a Hard Life and Scandal.
I’m glad you talked about The Show Must Go On and Mother Love. I cry every time I listen to both, but in Mother Love there is a line “I’m a man of the world and they say I’m strong/But my heart is heavy and my hope is gone” and then the “Mama please, let me back inside” with the door close. It feels so vulnerable and raw and hits you right in the heart. Like you said, unlike TSMGO, it’s unmasked and devastating, especially knowing it was the last song Freddie recorded (how he had planned to come back to finish the rest but then passed). It’s impossible not to cry. But I will say, it’s so wonderful to see how Queen’s music and Freddie himself are loved and appreciated all these years later by many generations (and will be for generations to come). Queen is really something special! Thank you for this Queen video and I just subbed to your channel!
Always wonderful to see that many people give credit to Queen's hidden gems. My 10 deep cuts: Liar, Ogre Battle, Tenement Funster, 39, Teo Torriatte, It's Late, Was it all worth it, Don't Try So Hard, Las Palabras De Amor, It's a Beautiful Day
I saw this video only recently, and, like you, had to take a couple of breaks lol. I had no idea someone would actually make this type of video. I would probably never make this video myself because of the time, but I definitely did the same thing. But not just a tierlist (although I did that as well), but EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. I understand your nerdiness lol. I appreciate your knowledge about the music because you’re not clearly not just speaking out of your ass, you know what you’re talking about in terms of music and lyrics and who wrote each song etc.. Of course opinions always differ slightly but we are comparatively aligned. The main difference between us though is I can’t help loving the mindless rock songs of Gimme the Prize and Tear It Up. Although I enjoy Brian’s more well thought out songs, I still appreciate those for being brainless songs I can just rock out to lol. My three least favorite albums are the same as yours but I put The Miracle last because omg does My Baby Does Me and Rain Must Fall suck sooo much. My Baby Does Me is the most repetitive song about nothing and Rain Must Fall has the worst drum track in existence - those songs pull that album down so much. Alright, I’m done rambling lol. Again, I appreciate the time and effort you put into this as I’m sure it was immense.
VERY glad you don’t think I’m talking out of my ass 😂 I’m a music major and singer-songwriter, so I would hope I know what I’m talking about lol And yeah, the miracle is bogged down by too many nothing filler tracks, which queen are honestly above most of the time
That definitely makes sense! I definitely didn’t want to sell you short lol. Queen is by far my favorite band so I’m glad that you made this video as it showcased your passion for them very well.
I loved this, and I appreciate the work you've put into it. I love your passion and enthusiasm for the band, and also the details you pick out about the songs - whether it's a musical detail, a harmony part, key changes, chord changes, a particular aspect of Freddie's vocal delivery, or the song's lyrics. And our tastes are remarkably similar - I broadly agree with you on pretty much everything you say, with some minor differences here and there, but nothing too dramatic. My favourite songs and albums seem to be yours, too - and the same goes for my least favourites: I've always felt that A Kind of Magic and The Miracle are the two worst Queen albums, below Hot Space - with Jazz somewhere down there, too. And it's great to see you speak so passionately about the songs you love - The Millionaire Waltz, The Prophet's Song, for example, real masterpieces. And I'm very pleased - after your initial lukewarm assessment of the song - that you upgraded Brighton Rock to A-tier. It's one of my favourite Queen songs, wholly unique, like a cross between musical theatre and hard rock, quintessentially Queen. It a definite S - tier for me! Anyway, I loved the video, very, very enjoyable, thanks.
This was fantastic. Not sure how I missed seeing this but happy that I finally did. You had me laughing out loud at some parts. Much appreciation for all your hard work.
Man I never thought Bohemian Rhapsody's meaning was complicated after the first time I heard it as a kid. Maybe it was a bit simplistic of me, but it seemed like it made plenty of sense albeit maybe not the clearest thing. It sounded like a poor kid growing up in a violent place, and then sort of giving up on life or feeling like nothing was worth it and he had to tune out from caring after he inevitably became involved. But I could very very easily be wrong.
That was entertaining😂 Great video Lauren. Very passionate, thoughtful and funny comments. Obviously I don't always agree, but more often than not. I tend to prefer the Harder Rocking songs more than you. You should definately see Highlander - many of the songs on AKOM make more sense if you do, like Gimme the Price, Don't Lose Your Head and Princes of the Universe. Oh, and Who Wants to Live Forever become even more perfect. Simply spine tingling! And Freddie sings the first verse in the movie version btw. AKOM and Miracle have some duds, but the singles are soooo much better than those on Hot Space (bar Under Pressure). Thanks
I loved it. I am 25 years old and it was so refreshing to find someone my age who appreciates Queen as much as I do. To speak so highly about extremely niche songs like White Man, The Prophet's Song, It's Late. Also, Made in Heaven is my favourite Queen album and I've been disappointed to see it always rank very low everywhere I've seen, and I was very glad that you appreciated it. I have to disagree when it comes to A Kind of Magic, it's honestly one of my comfort albums and also Hot Space I don't really like it that much, but eh it's fine to have a few disagreements 😅
I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a contrarian but I do think Body Language is genuinely pretty good, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite riff-based songs. The first time I heard it was just a snippet of a live version, and that rolling bassline, Roger riding the cymbals and kick and snare, and the vocal line, just really gave it a cool feel to me. But that wasn't one of the quiet whispery parts, which I will concede may be a bit cheesy, as may the little percussion twinkle around "snakes in your eyes." I will also say the don't talk part does come on a bit strong to me; perhaps a softer more whispered delivery would be more suitable to the vibe and not just feel off-putting.
I'm very early into this video - you've just finished Queen II - and I'm loving it so far. This is my kind of nerdiness, and I'm enjoying your passion, and your comments and observations about the songs. It's interesting that you've included Mad The Swine - that was never an official song on the first album. Maybe it was included as a bonus track on a later release? But the real reason I'm leaving this comment now, so early into me watching the video is to ask a simple question - and maybe you'll address this later in the video - but... where is Ogre Battle? You missed it out! On Queen II you went straight from Loser in the End (meh) to Fairy Feller's Master Stroke (awesome), omitting the phenomenal (probably S-tier) Ogre Battle! Anyway, I'm loving this video and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it! edit: okay, I've reached the 18.29 minute mark of the video and you've just had your realisation about Ogre Battle! I'm just glad you realised, and the Ogre Battle shaped hole in this video has been filled! Better late than never, that's all I'll say. And A-tier is fair - I know I said S-tier, but I'm fine with A. I'm remarkably in sync with you on most of these rankings.
You don't know how proud I am of being the one who made that Tier List template, I'm as geeky for Queen as you (as you can notice). I feel like this is one of those TH-cam videos I'll rewatch every time I'm washing the dishes or something; not only because it's really funny, but because so far I agree with like 85% of what you say (and when I don't, I can totally see why).
Imagine, if you will, a teenager in the 1970's, who had not really listened to Queen I or II when it came out. Killer Queen is released, and it's cool but a bit theatrical for the tastes of the rock crowd. And thens suddenly, when you're listening to the radio one night, those first chord strums of Now I'm Here hit, with Freddie's echoing vocals, and the tight harmonies, and you feel the urge to go out and buy Sheer Heart Attack as soon as possible. That's basically what happened with my mum. SHA is still her favourite Queen album, and I guess I inherited that, and I love Now I'm Here too. Edit: the phrase 'I'm sorry Freddie, I don't believe you want to bang women' is wild given that he was very bi. Sure he ended up in a relationship with a guy, and had a lot of sex with guys, but he boinked women too. I think the guy just really liked sex.
I've always heard that Freddie was sexually attracted primarily to men, but romantically to both sexes- I'm bi myself not trying to be biphobic I promise
34:44 ...... 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Couldn't have said it better myself... this is one of the most epic songs I've ever listened; from lyrics, to vocals, to guitar... OMFG, why do people dislike it or don't know about it?! You get all my respect. 🫶🏽
White Man is one of their most powerful rockers and Freddie's greatest rock vocals! Glad to see someone rank it super high as it certainly deserves it!
I think you're very right about Roger's songwriting! I often find him to be very tell-not-show, in contrast to the widely advised approach in writing that I've seen, which is show-not-tell. Also to anyone reading, be sure to read about the painting The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke, quite a backstory of sorts to get into there.
I’m glad that you rate “A Day at the Races” so highly. The album always falls in the shadows of “A Night at the Opera” but is the perfect realisation of the creative muse at work in “Opera.” It is a collection of perfectly crafted songs. Freddie also rated “Somebody to Love” a better song than “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Finally!!!! Someone who appreciates Made In Heaven!!!! It is a great album!!! It is routinely ranked bottom three by Queen fans, but it is SO much better than that! Maybe top five for me!
Nerd-Queen-fan recommendation: the raw version of The Miracle released a few years ago as extra content for the anniversary edition, with the half-baked version of the songs, is a much more interesting record than the official album.
I'm sorry for adding so many comments, but I'm not the only one here at least (Miles had a lot to say) and I don't wanna drone on too long, so I just wanna say, if you haven't heard the Sapporo 1982 live version of Teo Torriate, I feel like that's a must-listen. I heard that version first, and it overall meant a lot more to me and stood taller to me than the studio version.
Funny you mention seven seas of rhye being the first song for queen II, the band thought about doing that so it connects to the debut since the last song was the teaser for the song. Mad the swine is an extra studio song not on the original album.
I know what people mean regarding I'm In Love With My Car I guess, but to me it is objectively good. I get this big triumphant anthemic vibe listening to the live versions, and the studio version has such warm harmonies and a funny little ending. The lyrics are pushing it I agree, but not so much with the car stuff, moreso because of like "don't have to listen to no run-of-the-mill talk jive" lmao.
Last comment from me 😂 if you want another band influenced by queen check out the band Extreme. The album III Sides to Every Story is a masterpiece and one of my favorite albums of all time and I like it better than any Queen album (and I’m a huge Queen fan). Very astute observations. Enjoyed thanks! Highlander is definitely worth watching at least once - it's very daft and overblown - but the soundtrack versions are much better / stronger and adventurous - more in keeping with 70's Queen, and work really well in context. A soundtrack album would've been much better than the hodge-podge of AKOM IMO. Cheers... "I thank you all!"
I skipped Flash Gordon but I would put the title song in b tier
What about The Hero?
@@milesfernando best song in album. A
