In the 1993 movie, Mario's actor didn't even know it was based on a video game. In the 2023 one though, Mario's voice actor spent years stomping koopas.

First, congrats on getting shouted out be Schaffrillas. I look forward to checking out your other stuff.
Secondly, the overly fast pacing is my biggest, but also, really only problem with the movie. I would have loved a deeper story and greater character arcs, but I don't think that's what Nintendo was going for. They wanted this movie to be pure, unadulterated fun, just like the games, and in that respect, they succeeded beautifully. It's not the best film ever, but definitely the best movie Illumination has put out since the first _Despicable Me._

As funny as “Peaches” was, I still felt like it was kind of a waste of Jack Black’s talents not to give Bowser a proper villain song, which is what I really thought we were gonna get ever since I saw that poster with him on stage in front of all his minions. Oh well, maybe next movie.

Felt the same way. As a huge Mario fan, I felt I had to hide just how actually excited I was for this movie more than I led on lmao. Like… I’ve wanted this for YEARSSS!! Overall, I really enjoyed my time watching the movie. It was by no means a flawless or amazing animated film - hell, it didn’t even feel amazing for what I was initially expecting for a Mario movie, but overall I came out of the theater relatively satisfied. The only pang of disappointment I felt related to having no movie to look forward to again to this level after watching lmao

The flashback scene of baby mario and luigi legit made me cry, its such a good showcase of their relationship and the music captured the feeling of comfort from this memory and the sadness of being separated from mario so ethereally. I wish we had more of these “show don’t tell” scenes, like when mario is playing kid icarus and he sees the “I’m finished!” screen and the reflection of the tv shows his face filled with doubt. A few more of these scenes would have done so much for the movie, but as is its still my favorite animated movie even if its only because of my connection to the mario franchise.

I agree that splitting up Mario and Luigi wasn't a bad idea per se, I just wish Luigi got to have his own little adventure instead of being stuck in a cage for the entire runtime.
When Luigi said "There's got to be a way out of here" upon being locked in the cage, I totally thought he'd get his own prison break storyline, get a clearer character arc of him learning to stick up for himself. Maybe find a tool he had left in his overalls pocket from that bag he brought with him to break himself out?
But sadly turns out there really wasn't a way out of there and we had to wait till the third act to get more Weegee Time™.

One of my biggest issues with the movie, among the many issues I had with it, was that Mario and Luigi were from *real life* Brooklyn. It was so jarring to me that they didn't face any repercussions for their actions at all. They straight up destroyed the bathroom in that couple's very expensive looking apartment... and it doesn't get brought up again? Mario and Luigi said they spent all of their savings on the commercial... so who's going to pay for the damages to the apartment? And yet in the dinner scene the family was only making fun of how cringe the commercial was. The bathroom probably cost 10s of thousands of dollars to repair, Mario and Luigi are broke, so wouldn't they ask their family for help? Would've been a much better conflict than "Lol commercial cringe and we don't believe in your dreams to be a plumber" imo.
Let's also not forget that at the end of the movie, bowser's ship crashes onto Brooklyn. That probably killed thousands and destroyed millions of dollars in property. And do people in this universe already know that there are multiple universes? Bowser and toad would probably be thought of as aliens by the people of Earth. Yet when Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser, they're universally praised... despite, you know, killing thousands and introducing the world to aliens. (Mario also should've died when Bowser hit him into the windshield of that car, and especially so when he was hit through the window of the building.)
I know it's a silly thing to get hung up over. "It's a kids movie, don't think about it too much!" But in my opinion, these issues would've been easily avoided had they not had Mario and Luigi come from the real world. If I were writing the movie, I would've set them in the Mario universe already. We already have a location from the Mario games that's perfect, New Donk City. If it was set in New Donk City, I'd be able to suspend my disbelief a lot more.

    • @davidrich27
      @davidrich27 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It’s their “real world”, not our “real world”. It’s a semi-fantastic vision of Brooklyn. You can see with the technology, it doesn’t have really have a definite time or place. Sometimes it looks like it’s set in the 80s, but then there are flatscreen tvs and smartphones.
And the plumbing problems they have are completely farcical. You would never cause that level of destruction fixing a sink no matter what you did. It’s clearly ACME-style slapstick humor. I wouldn’t overthink the repercussions. While it’s closer to reality than the Mushroom Kingdom, it’s still a cartoonish version of reality.

Same experience lol. Being well-versed in Mario fandom all these years, I hyped the movie up in my head thinking it was going to change my life. Went in expecting to love it, but I felt very empty inside upon realizing I didn't connect to it, even wanting to give it the benefit of the doubt. I think the dog scene at the start was longer than Peach and Mario's exchange in the field.
And I really enjoyed the Brooklyn origin stuff, that was my favorite part. Unfortunately a lot of threads introduced aren't tied up. Had my fun, but as a package I personally didn't dig it as a narrative-driven adaption, which is a shame and I know full well.

8:23 omg that is so true! You're the first youtuber I've ever seen talk about the fact that a movie that has huge ups and some somewhat bad moments needs to find another term than "mid" because "mid" just feels like a word that suits only boring movies!
And yes, the term "mixed bag" exists, but It feels like it's just too pejorative of a word to talk about a movie that has significantly more good than bad to it...
Those type of movies need justice and thus a better fitting word/term to describe them !
Honestly, "beautiful mess" gets the job done solidly most of the time, it's probably the best designation to date, as "big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff" would perhaps become kind of redundant to say lmao.

Thanks for your review! Great video! Honestly as a big Mario fan, I was really disappointed for similar reasons as you mentioned at the start. Talking about this movie with criticism has honetly gotten really toxic, so hopefully I can explain my reasons for not liking it here with no issues (Spoilers):
    1. References - I honestly felt like they overdid it with the references to the point where it honestly felt like I was being pandered to as a Mario Fan. Most of the references felt to me forced and like they stopped the movie for a reference and were not intergrated well into the movie. For example, why did we need to interrupt the DK scene for a Diddy Kong cameo? No reason. Why did we need to see Mario play Kid Icarus? Because fan service. Why did our heroes need to go on karts on Rainbow Road to confront Bowser? Because reference.
    2. Humor - There were a few jokes that I liked, especially from DK and especially Bowser, but some of the jokes either did not land like most of Toad's jokes, or felt forced like the "Princess is in Another Castle" joke. I also honestly hated that Luma, who's only joke is "I'm cute but I am also saying edgy self depricating stuff about dying". By the time we got that pre-credits scene with the Luma, I honestly felt like they were getting desperate with this character being funny.
    3. Peach - Peach honestly came across as little too perfect in this movie. I noticed that the movie was too scared to have Peach struggle (especially in the climax where they show DK getting slapped by Bowser but do not want to show Peach stuggling to fight Bowser) or even show that she is great at doing stuff, like in the wedding when she quickly and perfectly freezes Bowser or even said that she did the Training Course perfectly from Day 1 as a joke. Besides that, she also got conviced to help Mario a little too quickly, like in only 30 seconds of meeting him, she is like "Ok I'll let you do the Training Course". They also had an interesting idea of her originally coming from Brooklyn, but they do not do anything with that backstory, especially when in the final battle everyone gets sucked back into Brooklyn but doesnt even acknowledge it.
    4. Luigi - As someone who thinks Luigi deserves more respect, I was disappointed that Luigi barely did anything. Not only did I not like that he was the one to be rescued, but also that there is at least 15 to 20 minutes of him not showing up at all. If they wanted to keep him as the one in peril, I would at least wanted like a subplot where he and the others try to escape or something. Besides that, I'm sorry but I just did not buy the brother relationship that he and Mario had. We barely saw them together for the first 10 minutes and for almost the rest of the movie, they don't show up together. This is a problrm especially when it is called the Super Mario Bros. Movie, but we do not see enough of the Bros aspect.
    5. Licensed Music - It was simply unnecessary. The actual film score with its use of Mario movie was fantastic, but the licensed music came across as distracting. It is especially annoying now that we know that some of the scenes with this music were supposed to have music based on the games themselves and they are so much better. Everyone has already heard of how the DK Land scene was supposed to have DK Country music titled "Drivin Me Bananas" which is wonderful, but they replaced at the last minute with "Take on me", and it shows.
With all of that said, I still do not think this is a genuinely bad movie. The animation looks wonderful (it especially looked good as I was watching it in 3D), the voice acting is really good (I'm surprised I ended up liking Chris Pratt as Mario) and the movie can be fun, but the problem is that the movie as a WHOLE wasn't that much fun. Everytime the movie the picking up, there was something for the stuff I mentioned above that kinda ruined it. While this is objectively better than the 1993 movie, I honestly prefer the 1986 film over this one or the live action film.

You summed it up perfectly, 7/10 movie with 10/10 moments. I really enjoyed the movie as while growing up with these games I always wondered what it could be and this film absolutely sets up everything that it can go to. I'm personally hoping for a sequel we do a Super Mario World dinosaur/ yoshis island vacation where we get the Koopalings and explore more why bowser the way he is. And while it's a long shot we also end the trilogy (hopefully a trilogy and much more) with bowser finding out he has a son and introduce bowser Jr with the next three movies exploring 64, sunshine, and galaxy's designs. As much as I am hoping like everyone else we get galaxy I think it is way to early. And you brought up a point about a silent video game movie adaptation like wall-e. And I think that is a good idea they should save for Zelda or Metroid, link and Samus. Think it works better for Zelda as constantly it is acknowledged that link is a man of few words and that whenever we get a Zelda film or show it is great to depict how you feel in the game as the Mario movie did. Keep up the good work!

11 minutes in and subbed because like many others have already said, you really summed up what a lot of us were feeling really well. I normally indulge in spoiler free reviews of movies to manage my expectations, but chose not to this time around to try and let myself properly enjoy a movie for once. Unfortunately a friend of mine showed me the 54 score, which did hurt. I luckily was able to push that away because the critics are not always right. We saw this with movies like The Last Jedi. While they can have merit sometimes, it’s still important to enjoy a movie based on your own love for it. This applies to books, games, and other media as well. Even if some or many criticisms are valid, it shouldn’t hurt your love for the product if you genuinely enjoy said product that much.
Going into it with that mentality, I’d say it’s a 7/10 overall. It’s what I wanted from a Mario movie and actually stayed faithful to source material, but the lack of actual stories/characters/randomly inserted 80s music lowered it for me. And if someone isn’t a Mario fan, there is NO WAY they could sit through this and not be lost unfortunately.
I still think what we got is good overall, but it is still an Illumination movie at the end of the day. Both Nintendo and Illumination play it as safe as possible, so it makes sense the movie would do the same.

I also thought the movie was a mashup of two 🙈 I think Illumination needed to make the art style of the overall movie fit with the Mario redesigns instead of putting the Mario characters in an Illumination movie
Really wanted more character scenes and growth as well, the only “cut off” of these I liked was Donkey Kong roasting Mario instead of bonding over their daddy issues just cause I like the dynamic of “I don’t like you, but I don’t like the other guy more” they have.
I was so stupidly happy when I saw Bowser’s wedding outfit from Odyssey 💖
Yesssss I heard so many stories ppl say the movie didn’t have a message I’m just sitting here like: Mario literally lives with his parents and spend his life savings on a commercial because he doesn’t give up on himself even when others do. Like, he took all the snide comments *until* Luigi was brought into the conversation, he’s that determined and stubborn!
I liked the pet turtle scene because on one hand: yes soft Mario x Peach moment, but on the other Mario can’t flirt at the right moment 💀
…but yes love your review ✌️ new sub

one thing that doesn't sit well with me was how Peach was able to beat the training course from the very start like she said cause it.. doesn't make a lot of sense to me, even if she grew up in the world? I def don't doubt her abilities but the scene right afterwards was completely subverted with what they were going for and i think it would've been sweeter if she told him that she DID kinda suck at first as much as everyone else who hadn't practiced if that makes sense. what were your thoughts?

I liked this review. It actually is a good portion of my own thoughts, even though I personally loved it despite it's flaws. On a technical level it deserves nominations at the Annies or something (storyboarding and cinematography went crazy for it not to get recognized imo). Like you said, I definitely would've loved to see more of Mario and Luigi's family. They seem like the perfect bunch to get into talks with (reminds me of my dad's side of the family). As well as, I think that the movie should've had a longer runtime, because I don't think the problem was pacing. I think it was it didn't have enough scenes with the characters, their dynamics, and their personal battles. I'd add 5-10 more minutes Maybe the sequel can remedy this, because you can see the glimpses in script on a character level.
Perhaps if Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (the movie's directors) return for the sequel (very likely imo), they'll probably join Matt in the screenwriting process (at the very least help him develop the story). Because I definitely believe they want to go in with developing these characters some more, probably expand the worldbuilding than just the Mushroom Kingdom, and expand on the themes that first movie established. I have a scenario in my head for Mario Movie sequel about being out of your element, because that to me is a perfect extension of perseverance. That's me though.
Also, I need to give a quick shout out to the non billed vas in the movie like Khary Payton (Penguin King), Eric Bauza (Toad who had the Princess in another castle joke), Jessica Dicicco (Mario's Mom), Scott Menvile (The Blue Shell Koopa), and all the others I didn't mention. All of them were so fun to listen too.
Overall, I would put this movie in the Over The Hedge tier of movies. Just a fun time to watch over and over again for the characters, world, music, action, and a perfect comfort movie for me.

    • @focusfireno.1099
      @focusfireno.1099 ปีที่แล้ว

@Lauren Rogers They have to. The production value from this $100 million movie is crazy lol.
As for my sequel idea, it's mainly about how Sarassaland is even more of a weird place than the MK. The core four characters of this story would be Mario and Luigi (poster protagonists, Peach (secret protagonist), and Toad (optimistic comic relief). This would mainly be about how Peach feels conflicted/unsure about where she’s come from, ever since meeting Mario. She still loves the Toads and her kingdom, but she let's Mario know in a scene that kicks the whole adventure off. Via an item that indicates Sarassaland's existence thanks to Toad and his exploring.
Mario is curious about this item and promises to Peach that they will find out where she comes from. He let's Luigi in on the matter, and while a bit nervous to leave their new home so soon, he assures Mario that he'll be ready for anything.
With our four leaving the MK, they arrive in SL. The characters will encounter Wario, Waluigi, and one of the leaders of SL, Dasiy. Wario is a macho guy but is a little devious, Waluigi guy with a troll like demeanor but wants to be more, and Dasiy's just a girl failure. She's is almost the polar opposite of Peach, because she's for one isn't devoted to SL's people and two isn't in charge yet. Aster/Marigold (a new character to the Mario universe is), her older sister is in charge.
This new journey will be about how our main four will step out of their comfort zone to discover how they can adapt in this new world, help these new characters with their problems, and maybe stop a villain along the way.

@@focusfireno.1099 wait I actually adore all of this omg it all makes so much sense

    • @focusfireno.1099
      @focusfireno.1099 ปีที่แล้ว

@Lauren Rogers Thank you so much. I think the reason I gave Dasiy an older sister is because I wanted to continue the themes of siblings and their relationships.
Mario & Luigi and Wario & Waluigi are dynamics I can easily figure out with them being brother duos. One pair will be focused on the good of others, while the other is focused on what benefits them and them alone. Not bad people, just more anti-hero than hero. Maybe Yoshi will be how both pairs bond.
Dasiy and her older sister are where things get interesting. Aster/Marigold is always on Dasiy due to her constantly avoiding her responsibility as a princess. While Dasiy just keeps avoiding her people, her sister, and her responsibility as much as possible. Peach takes notice and asks Dasiy before she leaves, "You don’t seem to care. Why is that?". Dasiy responds somewhat vaguely with, "*sighs* When you have something you care about, you have something to lose."
That one tiny bit will get audience hooked because we could probably determine that Dasiy lost to something to the villain in this movie (Wart imo). Peach does know what the feeling is, thanks to the first movie. That's how Peach and Dasiy will form a friendship and understanding of what it takes to be a strong leader. Not just for yourself but for others as well.
Speaking of villains, side note, the subplot of this movie will be Kamek (possibly the Koopa Kids too) planning a Bowser escape plan and executing it.

Probably an uncommon take, but I think that how well a video game movie adapts the source material should be taken into consideration even when evaluating it as critically and objectively as possible. After all, a sequel to any movie is judged not just on its own merits but also on how well it respects and expands upon the characters, settings, and ideas presented in the film(s) before it, and films that are adaptations of other media genres are expected to adapt the source material well, so why not the same principle for video game movies?

I’ve never seen a review where I agree with everything! I was too hyper fixated on the marketing material heavily invested with footage and behind the scenes. I had the same reaction walking out, I was too confused because I didn’t know how to feel. It made me so happy seeing stuff I love fully realized but at the same time I wanted more character moments like my favorite scene in the movie is when Mario and Peach are flirting on Rainbow Road and DK and Toad interrupt it felt relatable and hilarious since I been in that situation many times. I really wanted more if that because, if extended, I feel like these characters could’ve changed how they were perceived in the games. Because my favorite parts were the character interactions. I loved Mario and Luigi’s bro dynamic and it reminded me of mine which is how the RPGS made me feel. Although I do like how Luigi’s the goal maybe he should’ve done more in the dungeon like interact with the prisoners more. He needed more to do because Charlie Day killed it.
Also how did they manage to turn the Superstar theme into a emotionally epic theme I’m so happy it stayed in and wasn’t replaced by Jump (which was going to happen btw). When I think more about Peach and her character in this movie, I can appreciate who she is and how she can be seen as a role model for little kids, but I actually personally thought they DID make her feel/sound a lot like Daisy just because of the SHEER CONFIDENCE they had her display. Though confidence isn't bad for her (and honestly might not even be the right word I'm looking for), the fierceness just didn't fit the near prim and proper AND soft part of her character.

6 or 7/10 never sat with me right for a rating of this movie. I mean, bowser alone should’ve made up half of those points. There’s so much there that bumps it up to being a great movie, but we all should’ve known that it was going to be a hit or miss once we saw that Illumination was behind it. It’s a huge shame, really, since I know for a fact that, if something like sony or dreamworks had control over the script, it would’ve been a significantly better movie.
Still, an 8/10 movie for me considering how much my goofy, spastic brain enjoys fast paced beautifully animated movies.
