Not a band, but the most overrated artist of all time has got to be Beyonce. The press treats her as the ultimate sacred cow, the most important artist of our era. Completely run of the mill commercial r&b with a shrill, unappealing voice and not even the charisma that you would expect from a major pop star. I just genuinely don't get why anyone rates her at all.
@@petegrusky2715I have never understood why Taylor Swift, and Ed Sheeran for that matter, are so popular. Their music is so vanilla. Music for the masses… music to be heard and not listened to!
Led Zepplin is definitely overrated all of the things you talk about for Queen apply double to them. Also lead singer is pdf file. I don't think Floyd is overrated they are just two very different good bands with a garbage band in between and the Waters stuff was fantastic. I also don't think KISS is really overrated per se they were never a huge puniversal henomenon they just had a persistent cult following and mostly because they were all style and no substance. They never played as good as they looked and there is endless drama and screwups and weirdness in the band. But regardless, he made two very entertaining videos.
Because I am a little older than them I couldn't get into them until later on when they became more radio friendly or dad rock. I did like Under The Bridge and Give It Away but the first album I had bought by them was By The Way and I discovered the rest retrospectively. If I had been in my teens in the 80s and grew up in the USA not the UK I probably would have got into them then with the original line up and then after that a young John Frusciante. Chad joined just after John but he is the oldest in the band. I tend to only know of bands in their early years if they are British so are the support bands to headliningers or on the college circuit. I saw the Editors in 2005 as support to Franz Ferdinand who had just released their 2nd album. So I miss out on the early years of US bands. I never heard of Van Halen until 1982 and REM until 1990.

@JeffCooper10538 Agreed - just unlistenable to me. Especially when set alongside the genius of British contemporaries like Teenage Fanclub, Shack and XTC. Oasis isn’t worthy of mention in the same breath.
@@chriscoughlin9289XTC debuted in the late 70s. Oasis debuted in 94. Do you really view them as contemporaries? Btw XTC is genius, but Oasis wrote simple rock/pop anthems that now make for good 90s nostalgia. I don't see, where the problem is and why people have to snobbishly prove their inferiority on every corner by bringing up totally unrelated postpunk/new wave/art rock geniuses? The thing with Oasis is, Noel could get a tune out of very basic chord progressions, which is actually an underrated talent, and Liam looked cool in a parka, also they were funny in a stupid reality tv kinda way. The problem with XTC is, that Andy sounds like a barking seal and doesn't look cool in a parka (Maybe Colin could have pulled off a parka though). Again, XTC are total genius and they're criminally underrated, I agree on that, but why the need to compare?
And speaking of, aren't Slade one of the most underrated bands? (I mean, disregarding the misspelled glam hits, of course). Slade In flame is a killer album!
I agree with you that moodiness is tiring. Even Nirvana would switch up the bad moods with joy. As you get older, it's harder to digest all the angst also, because you have real reasons to be angsty and don't need to be reminded of it.
I also remember when everyone was going "Tool are amazing", but everything I heard just made me go "Meh." I went to see King Crimson open for Tool 20 years ago. I felt like I was one of the few people there for KC, and it made me feel old. But I sat through the entire Tool show and still felt that KC was the better band. And thank you for calling out Pearl Jam (and the great Americana rant 😆). And yeah, Springsteen has done nothing for me ever since he first burst on the scene in the 70's. He was SUCH a critical darling, but he also championed a very specific east coast urban blue collar way of life that someone like me who grew up in Southern California could not relate to at all. But I felt like the industry was shoving it down my throat, going "THIS IS IMPORTANT -- YOU MUST LIKE THIS!" No thank you.
My top 10 overrated bands are : 1. Coldplay 2. Coldplay 3. Coldplay etc. I can understand why people like most bands that aren't to my taste. There are very few bands I actually dislike, rather than don't like. I just can't see why Coldplay are so popular, other than they are popular.

I'm a new sub Andy and a music fanatic. I am really enjoying you. We are about 5 years apart in age, me being older. I miss going to gigs; hundreds I went to 70/80/90. Had a great time, saw some epic bands and it's a shame today's kids won't get that. My first gig, aged 15, was Uriah Heep at Wembley Arena. Mum n dad took me. I took my daughter when she was 15 to her first gig. I recently saw a mini documentary about lost music venues in London. Bloody tragic. This isn't rose coloured glasses, this is genuine loss. No venues cos not enough bands to play in them. Anyway I love a top 10 and a rant and am playing catch up on your videos. This may take some time...
I remember the Barflys in the 00s. There was one in Cardiff. Saw a few come back punk bands there such as the UK Subs. Now it is a beer cellar. There was a temporary rock club under the cinema that later became a Hooters. I saw the Buzzcocks in there when it was a rock club. Now we don't have a concert hall because St David's Hall is closed for inspection because of crumbling concrete. There is now only an arena, a stadium and university for concerts.
I went to see Green Day with my two Nephews and I heard a good Band with a real Rock Singer in the Tradition of English Hardrock and Punk Bands in the 70ties. They gave my Nephews what we needed when we were Teenagers. They were no Blink 182, luckily. Green Day gave the Generation of Kids 25-35 younger then mine what they needed. Nothing wrong with them.
Springsteen. Apart from being overrated, it pisses me off no end to see this man worth half a billion dollars still doing his working class, I'm one of you, blue collar act. What is he going to sing about then? A song complaining about the nanny being late that morning or the wine not being chilled enough? Do agree with your comment however
HIs stadium rock is cheesy I agree, but his dark moody stuff, and Americana style folk is top grade. He shouldn't be on this list for these works, such as Darkness on the Edge of Town, Nebraska are simply outstanding and top 250 all time albums. 42:31 ... exactly. U2 went at least 2 decades past their shelf life. Their early stuff (War '83, Unforgettable Fire '84, Joshua Tree '87) was fantastic up until Zooropa '93 and that was it for me. 10-12 years should have been enough, not 45.
"With or Without You" Bono's ode to a Norwegian pop group. Achtung, Baby and Zooropa was the cut off for me. I recently tried listening to Oasis' s Standing on the Shoulders album. Starts off alright with an instrumental ripping off Zeppelin, followed by two Beatles songs, I gave up halfway through Won't Get the Roadhouse Blues.

Brilliant show! How about a show about the underrated bands and artists? Barely anybody mentions the incredible Ian Paice or the genius of Jon Lord... King Crimson maybe? Elp? I'd be curious to hear your take on those bands. Cheers.
Purple are still going and no one has forgotten them yet...I follow a lot of classic rock/hard rock/metal youtube channels and I feel that along with Sabbath, Deep Purple are the most lauded, praised and frequently mentioned band. Because of this, I think they'll still be remembered. Lord and Paice maybe go under the radar but Ian Gillan, David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore are constantly praised and talked about. Glenn Hughes too, although also for his work with other bands.
Man oh man. It's a sad day when one of the big three are forgotten. I would daresay that the members of Deep Purple were on parity with the first supergroup - Cream.
Indeed. It’s all so very tongue in cheek. People should really try not to get their nickers in a twist. On the other hand, them doing so, is entertaining in itself

Only the test of time can tell what's over or underrated. Back in the 90s there was a consensus among music journalists that Oasis was the best band since the Beatles. For me Oasis are the definition of hype because of that. But that's not their fault of course.
I've never got Bruce, I love Dylan and don't need a blue collar version, although I appreciate he means a lot to some people and his lyrics do have a doomed romance about them. People saying Primce absolutely baffles me. I first became aware of him with When Doves Cry came out. Opens with an incendiary guitar break, then the rest of it is so sparse, yet funky. Then the brilliant Sign O' The Times and immediately went and bought the album. People say you have to see Springsteen and Prince live to really get them. I finally got to see Prince at the Hop Farm in 2011. Unbelievably it was originally a two day festival with Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Stooges, Eagles so already a stellar line up so I'd already bought my ticket before the sunday was added. I think the amount of money Vince Power the promoter spunked to get Prince nearly bankrupted him. But boy was it worth it. Hands down the best live performances I've ever seen. He came out and he started soundchecking while his (all female) band vamped through We Live 2 Get Funky. Shouting out instructions to the sound towers. Then he launched into Let's Go Crazy and didn't let up for nearly three hours. It was absolutely stunning, the ultimate showman. He ended the set proper with Purple Rain and then vame out for three encores which became mini sets in themselves ending the first one with a monstrously funky Play That Funky Music. For the 2nd encore he brought on Larry Graham who'd played earlier in the day. They did Everyday People, Come Together and a riotous Want To Take You Higher. By now I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. What a gig, I felt privileged to witness it. Concerning the Chilli Peppers, I love some songs. That intro that winds up to the guitar break on Can't Stop gets me everytime If you can't get into that I'd check your funky bone..
You are so right about most every band you name. But I had to catch up on the bloke who so got it so wrong about Pink Floyd. Yes I have a bias and love them, but beyond that, its ludicrous saying they are "overrated". Basing your rating on how long they took to find their mature sound is just weird. Every good band started out sounding more naive when they were starting. The Beatles included Yes also sounded quite elementary on their first albums. The fact that Pink Floyd had 3 great full albums should be enough. The fact that they are so unique in their creativity should also hold weight. they didn't even borrow any sound like Led Zep did with blues. It was totally their own creation. I agree btw about The Wall. But the DSOTM, WYWH, and A albums were masterpieces. Then include many songs that stand on their own from other albums. Comfortably Numb (The Wall), or Echos from Meddle. And others from other albums They simply were and still are (which is a clue) a great band. Not over rated or under rated. In fact they never got their due when they were in their prime so any praise now is catching up.
Floyd got there due via being aristocratically wealthy from Dark Side being a top seller for decades. What kind of accolades did they need that they haven't gotten? The only people who notice Floyd gets heaps of praise that maybe is too much are from folks that like the other Prog of that era.
I’m still angry that everyone and their dog rated Floyd’s the wall so highly .. that I did eventually buy the thing. I didn’t know I was buying a talking book 📕. Played once and never forgotten. I can’t listen to anything after Wish you were here. Loved most of the preceding stuff.

Led Zeppelin didn't give credits to the old days Blues musicians? So what - did Elmore James give credits to Robert Johnson for the Dust-My-Broom-Riff? Ripping off tunes was absolutely familiar in Blues music. at any times.
To be fair, Zeppelin also nicked things from artists who were essentially contemporaries of theirs, like Jake Holmes, Burt Jansch, and Moby Grape. But on the whole, I think the Zeppelin plagiarism thing is a little overblown. Plant & Page wrote a bunch of great originals, too.

They were all that but I don't mind the first two records, before the coke bloat came into play. Derivative as hell, but as Noel put it himself, it offered a break from the alienated lyric, drop d alt rock out of the US (some of which I liked as well). Don't Look Back in Anger, in addition to typical Noel nonsense lyrics, is also more Pachelbel pop - talk about derivative.
Andy, I had the same reaction to Tool as you, until the latest album Fear Inoculum, which blew me away. I can't believe how much I love Pneuma. Amazing riffs. I’ve always found Bruce Springsteen a difficult proposition. He is a fine songwriter. I’m On Fire is a classic that deserves its many cover versions. But I once read a perceptive comment somewhere buried in the middle of a rave about his brilliance; it noted that rhythmically he operated off a fifties template that had never evolved. It places what Springsteen does in aspic. All the elements are derivative: the rough voice, the blue collar eulogies, the sweaty workmanlike performance; but they are suspended in an early rock n roll rhythmic framework to signify authenticity to the rebellious stereotype of working class boy made good/bad alike to Brando, Elvis, Dean, Andy Griffiths, etc etc. It’s American transcendentalism where getting your girlfriend pregnant and a wedding coat on your 21st birthday is equated with Walt Whitman. More recently critics have tried to reframe The Grateful Dead in the same way as earnest journeyman travellers “from sea to shining sea”, but a bunch of dirty, long haired hippies is less convincing than a storeman in jeans and a flannel shirt from New Jersey. He was one of the first stars where the main attraction was his similarity to, or aspiration to be, a rebel without a cause, as opposed to actually rejecting the society around him. He conforms to the type, rather than inventing it. None of which makes a song like The River any less affecting in isolation, or Dancing in the Dark any less invigorating as a pop hit until you realise the random girl he pulls from the audience to share the limelight is actually Courteney Cox. Overrated precisely because the central conceit is so overblown.
Social media 101- keep your comments short concise and to the point, you failed on all accounts, I'm no Uber fan of Bruce but he is an icon with a body of work that is legendary,, your rant was asinine,,
Thank you! I'm so happy that somebody else finally recognized (and published) that the Stones are OVERRATED. I would put them higher on the list. Zeppelin? No. Greatest rock band ever, easy (The Beatles don't count, they're in a separate category all by themselves). Knocking on them for the ripping off the blues is so overstated - half a dozen songs from early in their career out of 10 years and eight albums.
Damn, I loved reading that comment about the mighty Zep, musicians and chemistry that won't be equaled! Not one friggin' bad song in their catalog.....no duds! That lazy, parroted "blues rip off" crap about Zep is used by people pissed off at their own lack of belonging to LEGIONS of Zep backers, a fan base numbering in the hundreds of millions. I can see how folks that aren't fans of Zeppelin, could be tired of hearing about how great they are - but the truth of the matter is that all the acclaim that comes their way is actually well deserved! Led Zeppelin, quite frankly, cannot be overrated, it ain't f'n possible!🎸🎸
Your correct about Zappa with Flo and Eddie, F&E are ok on their own, Zappa wasted 2 years, when Zappa finally embraced atonal music that really showed his genius, his guitar playing is superb
Steven Wilson is pretty overrated as of now. As much derivative as original and most of the fun stuff is now going towards 30 years old. The good stuff is good, the forgettable is plenty and forgettable. People do seem to enjoy it at first though.
The Rolling Stones & Oasis are similar in that they have both become their own tribute bands. People turn out to watch them do their old hits & suffer through newer stuff
Prince does not play 40 instruments. (unless you're counting bongos and maracas). He's a good guitar player who can play a little bass, a little piano, a little drums. That's it. But he knows how to sell it! THAT is his genius. He's the world's greatest musical con man. Then again, when you admit you can't tell the difference between Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi then you may need to fine tune your ears. I don't care for either band but I sure as hell can tell there's a MASSIVE difference in style, sound, song structure and musicianship between those two bands.
you're not serious when you say he plays a little bit of those instruments? he plays them more then just a little bit, his first album recorded when he was just 18 is him playing all those instruments (the whole album is just him) and even at the age of 18 he played them way beyond just a little bit.
Jagger IS absolutely embarrassing to watch on stage, at his age. And the Stones probably are idiot savants, as musicians, good at only one kind of thing. But that one thing is a rollicking, bluesy, twangy, sloppy, kickass groove that is endless stupid fun. They ROCK and they ROLL, and what else do you really need ?
Kraftwerk, sure they're influential, but they suffer from the dreaded masterpiece syndrome. After their last 80s album, electric cafe, released in 1986, it took 17 years for the follow up, tour de France, released in 2003. And so far it's a 21 year wait for their next magnum opus, which is either a work in progress or non-existent cause they're content to live off their hip-hop & house music sample royalties. Zappa dead for the last 30 years has released more albums than he did in his lifetime. Yes a dead composer has a far greater work ethic than Kraftwerk, who should've just broken up in the 80s. Still a legend & influential, but way too lazy to be considered prolific.
Kraftwerk are the German Beach Boys. Which means hugely important IMHO. Not being prolific doesn’t mean being lazy. Just release albums that matter. Which they did.
Kraftwerk were my favourite band for so many years and a huge influence in my life, saw them live '81, '91 and 04 in Switzerland, met them at the height of their fame, really, really nice unassuming guys, but you're so right!!
I have had the exact same experience with Tool as you did. Thought I d get one album, cause everybody was constantly referencing them, got Lateralus, and it did nothing for me neither.
I couldn't agree more with Bruce Springsteen and Oasis. Oasis are reasonably competent melody writers, that's about it, hardly deserving of the status they've been elevated to. Like you said their lyrics are ridiculous, but I think part of that is just down to not being able to speak properly. Lines like "take that look from off your face" and put it where, on your face? The fact that they even get mentioned in the same sentence as The Beatles is just tragic. As Paul McCartney said, they are a bit derivative, although, to be fair, Paul is usually one of the nicest, most generous people, but one of the Gallaghers had recently insulted The Beatles before Paul said that. I can't believe anyone would think Prince is overrated. I can only assume they know nothing about him and whilst he may not have been able to play the guitar like Allan Holdsworth, he was still an amazing guitarist. The most amazing thing about Prince is that he was successful. Obviously he was a great multi-instrumentalist, great song writer, etc. which may make you think he should have been successful, but his artistic choices were not commercial at all. Things like totally removing the bass from When Doves Cry, because he wanted to create a more sparse sound is not what should appeal to the masses. It reminded me of when T.Rex recorded the song Ride A White Swan with no drums, although in their case it wasn't an artistic choice, they just didn't have a drummer at the time.

My only beef with Led Zeppelin isn’t exactly to do with their music per se, I just feel they were so hyper-charismatic. Here in the USA, from what I’ve seen, the contemporary blues rock scene (i.e. Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat) wasn’t quite so monolithic and in your face as Led Zeppelin …but it was quality music deserving of a listen and they kind of got overshadowed by Led Zeppelin (not the band’s fault). To Zeppelin’s credit, I have tried to listen to their albums to crap on it, and end up absolutely loving it.
Yes and LZ barely did any press, or released any singles, they just put out amazing albums and played the best live shows ever. Almost as amazing songwriters as the Beatles, if not equals, who could smoke any band on stage and take a 3 minute song and kick its ass for 20 minutes.
@@danielschaeffer1294 this is the mistake of thinking Zeppelin are 'just' a "blues band". If you play Zeppelin to a blues purist, they'll think you're wacko. The whole point is that they moved it away from the roots. Zeppelin took the blues to a primal and heavy place that was nothing to do with actual blues. And when Black Sabbath and Judas Priest then took that and made it heavy metal, some people struggle to grasp the link in the chain, how important Zeppelin was.
@@jimmycampbell78 True enough, and I’m not denying it. However, I still think it unfortunate that here in America so much of what is OUR music got left in the rear view mirror, because so many FM stations were giving us a daily diet of Zep and more Zep. (And btw, one of the greatest concerts I ever saw was a Canned Heat - Jim Morrison jam session! Those were the days!)
Have you ever listened to Cliff Williams prior band Home? Especially with the late great Clive John (aka Clint Space) only on their first album! Their second album 'Home' is a gem, especially Dreamer!
Absolutely loved the Pearl Jam rant Andy😂😂😂. I do think it was Eddie Vedder's solo album that was Americana though. Did Planty Spanish Archer you because you expounded your views on it.... Noooo. The Stones can’t be on the list. Plus I would argue .. they’d be less “overrated” if they came from Kidderminster which is closer to Brian’s home town of Cheltenham. Nicely done in your response.
I can listen to AC/DC (The band that allegedly only plays 4 chords) and in their prime I can recognize every song on the albums, and each song has it's own hook and IS distinguishable from every other song. Then I listen to most other popular bands, even bands of today, and most of their songs on any given album sound exactly the same. You tell me that isn't genius!
The Chilis, The Boss and Oaaaarsis. I have a work colleague who loves the Eyebrow Brothers, but does not like The Beatles " They've got nothing to do with rock 'n' roll". Youngsters hey.
The Chills? Based on diminishing returns? I don't expect a relatively obscure band like New Zealand's the Chills, who made at least three beautiful records and have a "classic" compilation, to appear on the list somehow. There are surely other indie bands to hate more?
As a 57 year old and I aged with U2. Never bought an album and I owned 100s of albums and tapes. I like some of their more popular songs in the 80s. I never quite got it however. In 2004 my manager said she would pay 1K to see them per ticket when even popular shows were around 100. I know Bono and Edge from their names but they are pretty much irrelevant in my music life. I grew with my fathers Beatle albums, loved the Police and moved to top 40s in 1980s and then into metal in the late 80s, sub pop in the 90s, again shout out to you mentioning Alice in Chains, Soundgarden ... I also was into Mudhoney, TAD, Nirvana Bleach prior to Nevermind etc. Shout out to you mentioning Fishbone. Outside of Soundgarden in 93 in Montreal that was the best show I've ever seen. They gave it their all.
Schubert's juvenile symphonies and rambling sonatas are overrated. And I never want to hear that big C major monstrosity with its 3 dozen repeats again.

The thing with Oasis is, Noel could get a tune out of very basic chord progressions, which is actually an underrated talent, and Liam looked cool in a parka, also they were funny in a stupid reality tv kinda way. Oh, I heard U2 play in SF on Joshua Tree. Their early albums up through Achtung Baby were fantastic. They should have retired after Zooropa.
Deep Purple is UNDERRATED for the reasons you mentioned. Jon Lord and Ian Paice are two of the greatest musicians ever to play rock music.
Deep Purple, excellent call.

Good change of approach! This thread is a lot funner.
Totally. Prince was an incredible musician and a fantastic entertainer. One of the most hardworking of all artists in modern times. Never overrated.
Actually, 5 great albums. 3 great albums isn't enough. Most bands can do that.

"I'm on fire" is the ONLY Sprinsteen song I've ever felt the need to own.

I tend to agree. While the Zep made zillions, where was Rory Gallagher? Bonnie Raitt? Roy Buchanan? J. Geils? They were all a LOT closer to the roots.
"To Zeppelin’s credit, I have tried to listen to their albums to crap on it, and end up absolutely loving it" exactly
