A clip featuring a hurdy-gurdy built using a large African gourd as a body. The tune played is " Child Grove", found in Michael Raven's "1000 English Country Dance Tunes" ( Tunes published before 1730 )
If you guys are searching for "cheap" gurdies, go and check out the "hurdy gurdy marketplace" on facebook, people sell their (used) gurdies there and some of them are really affordable!
Neil you were one of the best uk hurdy gurdymakers, along with Mike gilpin and Martin Turner and Eaton,, all gone now, who's left commercially in the uk is hardly worth the mention, except for a few not so we'll known luthier gems in the uk,Who don't make a big deal of advertising commercially and shall remain respectfully unmentioned, but they are known to the dedicated few uk hurdy boffs !
thanks for the response! I was so curious that did my research after my comment and figured it out! amazing instrument, I had no clue of its existence until I came across to your channel! thanks for all the videos
Thanks for uploading this! I LOVE IT! The 1000year old rock´n´roll instrument. You´d need an amplifier, a distortion pedal and lots of taste to make an electric guitar sound that good.
Up until that point, the trompette is not used so the string just drones.Once you start articulating the crank, the loose bridge that the string sits on vibrates in the manner you choose and that creates the buzzing sound you hear at 2:03. You can see the right arm become more animated as this happens.
Hey, Neil! First of all, I want to say, I really admire your work! I love all kinds of uncommon instruments, and the gurdy is my favorite one. So, I need to ask... Could you send a Gurdy to Venezuela? Are they too expensive?
kalanaiokok it's the trumpet, if he turn the wheel at a certain rate it makes tremble a little wood piece called the dog which give rythme to the strings at the top of the instrument.
The visual design reminds me of a sitar. What string are you using for the low drone? I'm looking for suggestions for better options for that string. My current one is just too weak and half the time requires a good pluck to get going.
30 years and still learning :-) It's that kind of instrument.
The body is nicely carved so it's quite a lovely hurdy gurdy.
neil brook

Berry Gourdy 😂
This one is nicely set up and finely tuned. Well played.
Such a beautiful gurdy, I mean, gourdy. I love your playing, for instance, the glissando at 1:37. Awesome!
The Gourdy is a Gurdy made from a Gourd.
1:18 It's going to get a little bit noisy so I'll just stop talking & start playing some music
Looks and sounds awesome!

@fenevadka I use a Savarez Alliance KFA 1850 for low C and D. It stays in tune well and has a stable sound.
It's available through my website.
Hope you make a solo of this ill be waiting
The Hurdy Gourdy Man!!!
This instrument is kind of like a Nyckelharpa aka Keyed Fiddle. Sounds pretty cool!
@neilbrook Thanks Neil. I'm in the process of moving to Germany from the U.S. Once I'm there I will look at ordering one.

Good question !!
I came.
What happens in 2:03 and we can hear a new sound? Didn't see pressing any buttons or moving strings!
kalanaiokok it's the trumpet, if he turn the wheel at a certain rate it makes tremble a little wood piece called the dog which give rythme to the strings at the top of the instrument.
beautiful craftsmanship and beautiful playing.
If you don't mind me asking, did you sell it, and what was your asking price?
@thejohnsmithyetagain Looking at about 12 month waiting list. Nominal deposit gets you on the list.
