Survivalist Sometimes it sounds Greek/middle eastern, I think the instrument originated in the Byzantine empire. But at other times it sounds totally Celtic. Such a cool instrument.
ushoys that kid, so completely entranced probably just in that moment began an incredible journey loving music in all of its forms for the rest of his life.
I saw this video over 2 years ago and it was my first experience with a hurdy gurdy. I'm now 7 months into lessons and my 2nd gurdy is being built 😝. I love coming back to this video and hearing what sparked my interest
I really want to get into playing hurdy gurdy. Could you please tell me where you can buy one from ? And how can you find teachers or resources for learning ?
Well both a bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy both heavily rely upon the Drone bassline. So they have that deeply in common. So I would say his statement is not entirely incorrect. Plus as mentioned, he meant they sound similar not that they operate remotely the same lol.
Ye are right on that on that one. Hurdy-Gurdy really was "Rock'n'Roll" of 1500's, 1600's and 1700's. In some version was convertable coverhatch, so you could open it and vibrate the strings with your fingers, clap the hatch, or play pizzigato as well (plucking the strings, without rolling the wheel. If ye didn't believe, check out Guilhem Desq - Cicatrices - Hurdy Gurdy, th-cam.com/video/AdCU75EMqh4/w-d-xo.html
@@trymidsalarthun9915 it's strange because hurdy-gurdies wouldn't have been played by pirates. they stop working if it's been raining, let alone at sea!
@@trymidsalarthun9915 i suppose.. but please, believe me when i say that a gurdy would not last very long in a salty environment whatsoever. It's not something you can compensate for changes in the instrument in the way you can with violins, guitars and stuff like that. it was chosen as a pirate instrument in some games and shows because 1. the name is slightly piratey to some people, i guess and 2. because "it's weird rustic and funny and makes squeaks and creaks! that's piratey right?"
20 or so years ago a history teacher said this instrument was a thing of the past. And I love this instrument. Ive only heard it via Lorena McKinnitt. So happy this video found me.
I don't think it's more important things to do, it's that they're embarrassed that they don't know what it is, and the sounds are so strange and exotic !
He reminds me of the lawyer in Battlestar Galactica and he would actually fit in there just fine given Bear McCreary loves playing that instrument in his epic works.
This guy sounds like a really talented and cool individual. His band website is dead though and the website you linked doesn't seem to have much either. Does he have social media or something?
What an interesting building style. A huge and tall body, a small wheel, and a keychest that covers even the drone and the trompette. I doubt he could have chosen a better type of music for exactly that instrument.
How can all these people, just walk by, I would be mesmerized and stroll right over to him transfixed ready to dance pagan! My Germanic roots are crying out to this! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I haven't heard someone play the trompette with so much stacatto/agressive speed yet. Is that the type of instrument he's using or is it the playing style? Very interested in how to best get that type of sound
It's a Hungarian-style "Tekerö", they have very small wheels and short cranks which lends itself to this style of buzzing better than the typical varieties.
Kindof reminds me of bag pipes. It is an interesting instrument. For some reason a lot of hurdy gurdy videos are coming up in my feed. I guess if you watch one you will get more.
Sounds like he is summoning a cicada army
I believe that is what he's trying to do here
The little boy is going to be a Gurdy man when he grows up .
LOL, he looks totally mesmerized like he's tripping.
it's great music for dragon charming
Naw. A Break Dancer 🤣
Then he can be broke and basically homeless just like this guy.
@@Charlie_Chicago Check out Patty Gurdy she’s made a whole successful career out of it.
I need this guy to just follow me around all day playing. Mundane tasks and errands would feel like some epic journey haha
hell yeah, I'm doing window washing now! Look at me go!
That kid in the background just got in touch with something extraordinary.
his reptilian brain. and maybe the seat of kundalini power had been awoke
God damn the tempo, makes the drone sound so good. This makes me think of a cavalry battle.
I didn't think of that until I read your comment... I regret not hearing it before!
There's a lot of that in historical music, old medieval tunes aswell as cossack music deliberately try to imitate the tempo of a horse in full gallop.
Sounds Egyptian to me.
Think "Bagpipes."
Survivalist Sometimes it sounds Greek/middle eastern, I think the instrument originated in the Byzantine empire. But at other times it sounds totally Celtic. Such a cool instrument.
I know what my next Bard's instrument is...
I'm doing that rn too actually xD
Same here
Me too
What game???
Dungeons and Dragons
That kid in the background is clearly transfixed and has more appreciation and patience than the adult looking after him !
True, but give the guy his due. While he had no interest himself and clearly had somewhere else to be, he let the kid watch for nearly 5 minutes.
My 3 year old zones in on my computer whenever he hears a hurdy gurdy. Amazing instrument!
Essentially explains what's wrong with America in under 10 seconds
ushoys that kid, so completely entranced probably just in that moment began an incredible journey loving music in all of its forms for the rest of his life.
Kids are curious, and sometimes when they see something new, they wanna watch till the end...i used to be like that too

@@sinasaeb2670 Look up Nerdy Gurdy. They make kits for €300 and ready made ones for €650. Probably the best value you will find for one.
I wish you well, it is indeed an amazing instrument and hope you have many hours of enjoyment once you have mastered it fully.
I wish you well in your studies this instrument is awesome!
It´s like a violin and a bagpipe at the same time!!! god!! It´s fucking awesome!!!
J. V Rodriguez It's more like gusle and bagpipe at the same time.
It's nothing like a bagpipe. It doesn't utilise wind. The droning sound is an open string.
Slartibartfast - clearly they meant it _sounds_ like one, not that it _works_ like one. Now stop being such a wet blanket.

@@toysindahood Duh it's not air. But it has the same droning and hoarseness.
Looks like he's about to go take care of the vampire problem lmao I don't know why but he gives me mad Helsing vibes
Needs to be a show adaption about a helsing descendant who also plays the hurdy gurdy. Would watch.
This instrument kind of feels like the stringed equivalent of a DJ’s table with the variety of sounds it can produce and weave into the music

He is like a traveling magician. He possessed my soul with that box!
Makes you want to dance!
Harry Wass on Hurdy Gurdy,
Now he issn't.
The kid is somewhere at least around 4 and this was in 2014, that would mean he would be 10 at 2020, lets hope he grew up to become a hurdy gurdy man.
Still one of the best gurdy videos out there. So hypnotic.
"what key is this in?"
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I think the kid in the background made his decision to become a pirate in the future.
The "ahoy" pirate or the "I'm not paying $30 for minecraft!" pirate?
Mannequin Man I believe it is a Sea of Thieves referance.
@@trymidsalarthun9915 it's strange because hurdy-gurdies wouldn't have been played by pirates. they stop working if it's been raining, let alone at sea!
Nicholas Konradsen I mean, you never know what they would be up to when they were at a dry place for a while.

This music touches my soul.

I got a kick out of the kid in the yellow vest in the background....another convert is made! Welcome to the Dark Side, kid. LOL
20 or so years ago a history teacher said this instrument was a thing of the past. And I love this instrument. Ive only heard it via Lorena McKinnitt. So happy this video found me.
It does stir up a hypnotic rhythm
if you like this instrument, come to the festival "le son continu" from July 11 to 14 at La Châtre near Chateauroux in France
Kids looking at the coins going into the hat and is like ill do this
All the while I'm hearing the clink coins against each other, likely a mark of success for a minstrel
That's cool!
This was mesmerizing
That's the most interesting and badass sounding instrument i've seen so far.
My neck hurts from jamming so long. I loved this.
same
I'm amazed at the sound. That guy has real talent!
I just couldn't stop watching, this was beautiful.
I love the drone of the instrument. That's what makes it interesting and captivating, I believe. Anyway, I'm going to learn how to play it one day.
A friggin' legend.
I love all the people in the back who walk past something so crazy and exotic but pay it no mind because they have more important shopping to do lol
Luke Johnson not the kid in yellow. He knows wheres the good stuff
I don't think it's more important things to do, it's that they're embarrassed that they don't know what it is, and the sounds are so strange and exotic !
Mesmerizing

Know Loreena McKennitt? Best use of the Gurdy in instrumentation I know.

Not to mention the keychest covers the wheel also! Very innovative Tekero
I lived this times thanks .'(
I like how pirates used this to play this when they went booty huntin'
No, they didn't. Sea Of Thieves ≠ real life.
That's gonna draw the witch sniffers from miles around .
Fantastic!! I just can’t figure out why AC/DC couldn’t find a song to use this fabulous sounding instrument.
awesome

Fantastic!
Awesome!!! Why dont we hear this wonderful music on mainstream medias??!!!!
Check out Patty Gurdy she plays lots of them and is really talented.
So sad when they took the kid away. I think he was possessed by the wandering spirit of Franz Schubert.
wooooow
amazing
I can imagine so many lads drinking and reveling in the good music and ale. Time to forget and time to live as men
