Aye. We came here as farmers. We leave this land as warriors. This is our home. We will never give it up. To this ground, I lay my feet,, my plow and my sword. And one day, me. I stand until I sleep, forever more. This, is my home.

The hurdy gurdy must have been a masterpiece of medieval engineering. I can imagine them taking the same care of an instrument like this as we would a priceless guitar, or set of drums.

You'd be surprised to hear that after a brief period of popularity with rich folk for being a masterpiece of engineering, I read somewhere that these instruments had a bad reputation because homeless prostitutes would often play them for cash because they were easy to learn.

In the beginning it was. But then it became a very common instrument and even beggars could afford one. That's when it changed from a sophisticated instrument for the nobility and clergy to a common instrument for the lower classes.

I lived in a house with a man who played bagpipes and the hurdy gurdy. His wife played and sang everything else, the kids and cats ran around underfoot, and the other tenant was a bagpipe maker. You were really careful where you sat, but otherwise it was a happy time and place. This is much more serious than we ever got, and this ... pipe organ with strings ... is magnificent. As the snow falls, cast white flakes against the grey sky, a lone figure trudges on. Through freezing mud and mire, to reach the hearth of his heart's desire. The fell shadows swaying, the wind shifting the pines. The lone wolf and it's crying. Still our hero marches on. Freezing fingers that no gauntlets could keep warm from winter's cold biting maw. He keeps on carrying what little he has to keep him warm: the fire inside & strength of his limbs are all that remain to move the metal, the weight of war, the cold, hard steel of a knight's attire. The ember inside, his heart's desire,...

I made some lyrics, hope y’all like them!
    There was a king
    Come from a distant land
    He formed the earth
    Using his mighty hands
    He was a warrior
    Feared not beast nor devil
    He stood above all
    Who heard the ravens call
    There was a king
Borne from the blood of gods
    He fought for man
    And ary noble cause
    He was a warrior
    Feared not beast nor devil
    He stood above all
    Who heard the ravens call
    He was a warrior
    He was a ruler
    He fought for justice
    And ary noble cause
    He bore much power
    None could devour
    This shining warrior
Who wore the blood of gods
    He was a warrior
    Feared not beast nor devil
    He stood above all
    Who heard the ravens call
    He who stood above all
    Within the ravens call
    Was destined to fall
To neither devil beast nor man
    He who stood above all
    Within the ravens call
    Was destined to fall
To the might of godly hands
    There was a god
    Who’s anger seethed in flame
    His fury spawned
At mention of the kings name
    He burned in hatred
    His honor stained and faded
    He wanted all
    Who heard the ravens call
    He faced the king
    In battle cruel and cold
    It mirrored those
Wars seen in years of olde
    They both were warriors
Who feared not beast nor devil
    They stood above all
    Who heard the ravens call
    And in this battle
    The world unraveled
    Cleaved in twain
Marked with godly blood and pain
    The earth they ravaged
    In battle savage
    They could not foresee
    What chaos came to be
    These mighty warriors
Who feared not beast nor devil
    Had destroyed all
    Who heard the ravens call
    Once the battle was done
    Neither warrior had won
    Instead they looked upon
    The destruction they had wrought
    They saw that their conflict
Was the cause for all this
    They had ruined all
All who heard the ravens call

This could be played in many movies, at many different parts of each of them , but the song is about a dark path of a warrior. His life, entirely encapsuled in a piece of music that has not one mood, but many; change, flow, the way the instrument speaks creates shifts in mood and atmosphere.

As a trumpet and piano player I think they are switching the direction to separate the notes. With a trumpet, you can do it by using your tongue to stop the air, then pulling your tongue back in, with a tap-like motion. On piano since all the keys are already separate you just press them at different times. In musical terms, if you didn’t separate the notes, then you would be slurring them all together.

The Witcher gazes upon the wind-swept wildlands of a forgotten land his swords sheathed weathered and worn an extension of his soul anchored to his back... The wind picks gently and the rain rolls over untouched beauty, he slowly raises his face eyes closed allowing the water to make its way down his scarred face. The pitter patter of drops breaking on a look which tells a thousand stories from a thousand journeys…

    • @oldpossum4860

I have never heard it played that way either; adds a new dimension to the sound which can be a bit "mechanical" when all played in the same direction of rotation. Sounds similar to the Nickelharpa when played this way (unsurprisingly).
