hello Arriadna, the name of the instrument in french is Vielle à Roue...it is a very old instrument,but the structure does'nt stop to move during 1000 years...so the instrument always play in different styles,and the conception moves with centuary...i 'm for be completly free about creation and repetory for this instrument ;) and give sunshine to people who comes at the concert! cheers greg

Hurdy Gurdy is the english name for Vielle à roue in french, it is well known since the middle age here in whole Europe until now, under different forms and styles. Gregory was one of the first to use the Philippe Mounier's prototyps.
The hurdy gurdy was a solist instrument. One of the first things my teacher says when showing it to people is that there's it's a whole orchestra in that instrument. The buzzing bridge does the rythm, the song playing chord is the solist and there is even a bass. What the electric hurdy gurdy is becoming seems to me like the logic continuation somehow...
@irateofwatford Because the gurdy lends itself perfectly to adaption like this, much more so than a sax or (to a certain extent) a mandolin. Although I must say I agree with you - not that electronic gizmos are bad, but that too many people are relying on them as a replacement for a solid melodic and rhythmic structure.
@irateofwatford I agree it is a shame that electronics are killing of live music. I too love the hurdy gurdy, and like the more traditional looking gurdies, but it's still a hurdy gurdy that Gregory plays, although it may have lots of electronics and a carbon fiber body, it's still a hurdy gurdy, and that's what makes it special. Congrats to Gregory for bringing this amazing instrument to an all new level!
With all due respect to Grégory, who is a diamond geezer and one of the best players I know, I'm starting to get a bit fed up with the evolution of the nerdy gurdy. It is now being seen as an acid test of the mastery of the instrument that it can be made to sound like something different, such as a 'cello. And I do find the added gizmos annoying. Nobody ever thought of rigging up a saxophone or a mandolin with added electronics, so why do it to the hurdy gurdy?

@irateofwatford The first time I rigged up my saxophone (I was 15 years old back then) using various analogue effects, was in 1987.
