I love Illit's stage performance, so proud of the girls. Very touched by Yunah's award acceptance speech, could genuinely feel her emotions caused by the toxic controversies they had to endure since debut. Really applaud them for not letting the dirty media play break them, they will continue to become stronger and shine for sure. On a side note, I couldn't believe some fans of another boy group were attacking Jimin for winning the Daesang, seriously these fans don't fully understand how the voting system works & how organised ARMYs are.

I thought I was too old for KPop until I heard news and gossip about GD issues. I thought the guy fought valiantly against his haters and--he did not take himself out like others would do--he fought and I fell in love. His clunky style and his manuarism takes me back to my teens--Boy George, A Flock Of Seagulls, Cindy Lauper and oooh, so many more. I love Gdragon. My husband is a square and does not understand. My kids roll their eyes at me--but, I don't care I just love him😍😍😍

BTS Army here. February 2020 was when I became familiar with BTS -for several years it was Only BTS. And then it dawned on me -BTS was collaborating with people I never heard of-they were talking about music from people I never heard of-and they were friends with so many other members of other groups. So I ventured out !! And I love the view out here !! I’ve looked at the history of K-pop and really dug into several groups-and what I discovered- There’s a whole lot of talent out there ! There are so many members who have worked super hard to get to where they are at. My favorite performances were Seventeen and BigBang. I sent one of my granddaughters BigBand’s performance, and my comment to her ? “ now that’s what I call a concert performance !!!” The love those three boys have for each other and the hard work they’ve put in, not just talent wise, but emotionally - Well, let’s just say I wish I would’ve discovered them sooner !!
Additional performances I'd like to mention are: Boy Next Door. They killed it with the live performance and the collab band performance between ZB1 X TXT X Enhyphen was solid as well. Despite all the ongoing drama Hybe artists dominated MAMA! All the Illit members seem like lovely people to be with. From your mention of Illit's concept, it can also be described like young girls dressing up like princesses and having a tea party. They embody the fantasy, casual or historic manhwa vibe
Did you see Yuna and illit accept their award? Maybe not a big big moment but.. man.. a lot of us cried our eyes out with them. There was something very cathartic about it.
Seventeen have been consistently upping their game. And their choreo with that many members is always amazing. And Illit just proves the best revenge is prospering. Big Bang holds a special place in K Pop and the younger generations know that. They have been through some real crappy times (esp G-Dragon) but still came out on top. I know Taeyang has been stretching his wings lately with his latest releases. And Jimin was just floored with his award. Jungkook always golden.
Seventeen really slayed! Their latest being a love song yet it was delivered powerfully. And of course they bagged two daesangs. They have been sensational this year, from Unesco, lalapalooza Berlin, Glastonbury festival and much more. Congratulations seventeen you deserve it🎉❤❤

There is a reason it was prerecorded here. Bruno already said the venue wasn't adequate. He didn't like the setup & wasnt allowing for rehearsals, camera angles and such. Bruno likes things done a certain way and Mama wasn't being very cooperative. Add to this not allowing for his band to play & bruno always plays with his band. So i don't blame him as this is Mama's fault here.
I am also BTS Army, but on one hand, I am so glad the boys all went into the military- They have a tendency to dominate -and rightfully so- But I am also so proud that so many other groups have had a chance to really shine !!! Congrats to Seventeen ! You know all the BTS members are so proud of them ! And happy for them !!

Treasure had the best performance 1.day, they literally made it their own concert. I think they was the only one singing live whole time without any backtrack. The fanchant during breakdance was insane, just prove how many Teumes was there. And they didn't just stay in the main stage but perform in many places and visited audience. It must been insane experience live.
I think the biggest loss this mama 2024 award ceremony is LE SSERAFIM NOT PERFORMING.... What a loss. We are robbed of one of the best performers ever in kpop. Also my favourite moments include boynextdoor and TXT performances although TXT performance was not upto that level they did in previous years. They set their standard too high in previous years award performances. Still it was so beautiful and serene and verymuch TXT. BND was just full on fire...no wonder they got the favourite dance performance award
Le sserafim performed at both MTV awards in the US 🇺🇸 and UK 🇬🇧 and received awards I think their at the same level as Ateez and Stray Kids Having performance’s on a big global stage with massive artists like Eminem, Megan the Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter

After TOP leaving, GD being investigated yet again for the same old bs and BBC revisiting the Burning Sun, I was like... Yeah GD is probably too exhausted to show up in public again. But then... Wow. Homie really got the power. The comeback he made needs phenomenal emotional strength not many ppl have. And somehow the group received a lot of love from the Korean GP after being dragged through the mud. Really inspirational. Fr. I don't think anyone who listens to Kpop no matter the fandom wasn't happy to see him on stage again. I got into Kpop in 4th gen but I kn I was very thankful.
I watched MAMA off and on over the weekend and caught G-Dragon making an acceptance speech. He seemed awkward in an adorable way. Got me to look up his performance and I liked it. He has a good stage presence with a dash of quirk. And then when his boys showed up, and it amped up the vibe.
I honestly don't understand the logic behind all the hate that Hybe gets. Hybe is not perfect by any means, but neither are they nefarious - quite the opposite, they obviously give their artists so much support. And the Hybe artist performances at the MAMA is proof of that. The only reasonable explanation I can see is straight up crab mentality. The higher you rise, the more haters you're gonna get. I mean, just look at the line up of 2024 Billboard Award nominees for Kpop artists - 90% of them are from Hybe. Haters gonna hate, but Hybe gonna accelerate. 🤷♀ I mean, just the other day, I saw a report on a girl kpop artist trying to leave her group; she asked permission from the CEO, and his response was "only if you become my girlfriend for a day". And then he proceeded to try to shove his tongue down her throat. There were also allegedly complaints from other female artists about his behavior. WTF, why was THIS guy not called to the National Assembly? Sometimes, I really don't get the logic of kpop stans.
The reasons are quiet a few: In SK it is that BH/HYBE are the unwanted "upstart" - how dare they be more successfull than the founding/Big 3 labels!/s In the US/Canada/Europe it is more second gen fans that hate the "BTS paved the way" and argue with second gen x being first in something. They hate that HYBE artists overshadow their artists. Everything BTS/HYBE artists is doing is suspicious from the get go. They believe their own drama and are not interested in facts. To that come actual blackmarket campaingns wich Sean has talked about in different videos. HYBE BOY I think mentioned one specific case were SM payed for HYBE hate during the HYBE + LSM vs. SM CEOs + Kakao stuff - which is for once actually proven by a company/news outlet that was not hired by HYBE. Idol music is insanly competitive.

Not to mention Red Velvet are older and more independent/going towords the end of their contract which means they may not stay after the end while aespa is more dependent. The problem was that "fans" hated on Seunghan - the amount of funeral "wreaths" was breathtakingly sad - it looked like the head of state had died or something and they were promising to send a lot more again and again. Also, aespa's boost in rankings on apps like melon are due to bots who intentionally worked to ensure that LSF did not chart higher while they were the highest charters globally and on iTunes Korea. Melon is a kakao platform so no wonder aespa was able to buy charting positions and eventually tricled down to purchasing awards. For most if not all the awards they won, there were objectively better nominees.
Something that Bigbang has is legacy. It transcends popularity. Anyone can get popular quick these days through social media with proper and expensive marketing.
Katseye really impressed me as semi new group. I just watched their show on Netflix the night before do it was fun seeing them perform. The concept was great. Where was Le Sserifim? I didn’t watch MAMA so I’m not sure if they were there. Was MHJ and NJ there?😂😂
I liked Kate’s, Illit, Enhypens, IZNA, Yeonjun and of course Big Bang performances ❤ but the one held in U.S they could’ve at least have more artists performing or something lineup felt kind of empty.

I secretly kind of wish GD would buy out New Jeans' contract from HYBE, although I guess that side of music business isn't really his thing. I thought Boynextdoor were excellent! Very unexpected. Some faves were Seventeen, Katseye, IVE, RIIZE, Treasure - great performances from all the artists. Some were weak yes, but come on!!! The creativity was overflowing. The best, of course, was BIG BANG. Goosebumps at the excitement, and have re-watched several times.
You’re right. Aespa has weak stage presence and their choreos don’t give that wow factor in these latest songs. Them winning the choreo award was an insult to other groups.

Night 1 kicked off in L.A. and was well received. Discussions about future MAMA Awards Shows returning are quite positive. I loved Rose & Bruno's performance, it was great for TV. Japan's shows were epic. BigBang performed iconic songs and G-Dragon killed with his new single Power. Congratulations to IU, Jung Kook, Jimin and Seventeen on their respective wins. If I was a K-Pop artist I would sign with HYBE period.

14:40 No, actually, Seventeen debuted before NCT, and had been promoting under that name years and years even prior to that. Originally (way before debut), they had planned to have 17 members, but the perfect combination of members just never got to that number, so they ended up making sense of the name a different way. Yes, they do have official "units" (Hiphop, Vocal, Performance), but that's all combined to make 1 team and they do the majority of everything, including title tracks, etc., as 1 team of 13 members all together, unlike NCT, which effectively operates as more like several separate smaller groups, under 1 larger "team" umbrella.

Hihi I can always trust Sean / Seoulite for a little sassy shade 13:20. I am like many other ARMYs who proclaim that we are a BTS fan, not Kpop fan, and so we are not easily interested in other Kpop bands. Having said that, the exposure I have of other bands are through / due to BTS. I know Big Bang is huge and helped pave the way in many ways for K-artists like BTS but was only interested to know a bit more when Taeyang collaborated with Jimin and was on Suchwita; Seventeen because Mingyu is in the 97-line, good friends with Jungkook and Hoshi and Woozi were on Suchwita; TXT as the junior to BTS with Yeonjun and Taehyun (who were also on Suchwita) being part of Bighit wayyyy back; and Enhypen through BTS appearance in I-Land. YET apart from Illit's touching acceptance speech, the only other thing from this MAMA that left an unfortunately negative impression on me was Enhypen's fans going on and on about their band deserving / robbed of the Daesang award that went to Jimin. From what I have read, the rules are tricky and there's some confusion and also perhaps lack of transparency in the fan voting system between the Bonsang and Daesang awards. But when they say Enhypen was robbed of / more deserving of the Daesang, that automatically means Jimin is less deserving, which I found to be really disrespectful towards him and BTS of which band that even Enhypen members look up to. They obviously also underestimate how organised ARMYs are. UGH. And yeah, I am also not sure the hate towards HYBE, they are not perfect for sure and Bang PD trusting that certain someone was a clear mistake, but it's also credit to his vision and leadership / mentoring style that plays a major factor to leading BTS becoming the mammoth act that they now are (BTS members themselves being the main major factors of course).

The trying to bring together hollywood and kpop was a bit weird, awkward and the US audience seemed to lack energy and excitement. Japan was way better and boy when GD and Bigbang showed up brought back what MAMA used to be about it was electric. Seventeen, Enhyphen and other performances in Japan were top notch and probably a lot of them actually singing live.
We need to remember that a lot of people in United States aren’t truly familiar with K-pop- Many of them only like “ their one group” and the lack of their enthusiasm for other groups really shows.
BIGBANG was BY FAR my favorite performance. I've waited so long for them and especially GD that it made me so happy to see them again. but what also really made the performance so special is, that the WHOLE stadium was so thrilled and hyped all the kpop idols being even happier for them to be back than over their own awards. you could really see, how much respect they have for them and how they formed the industry so much. I really felt so happy seeing them getting the deserved admiration for their hard work and impact. the kpop world really healed for a moment.
Thank you the review. I think all the groups highlighted did well. Kpop is defin6a growing industry with American youth. I will be happy when there is an awards program that recognizes former K-pop artists when they age out of Kpop, but still produce and release great music. Kpop attists seem to be discarded once they enter the 30 years old and above age bracket. But this age is when they can really begin to write and sing music with great emotion and heart. Will there ever be a MAMA30+ version for older artists to be recognized?

I thought the guy fought valiantly against his haters and--he did not take himself out like others would do--he fought and I fell in love. His clunky style and his manuarism takes me back to my teens--Boy George, A Flock Of Seagulls, Cindy Lauper and oooh, so many more. I love Gdragon. My husband is a square and does not understand. February 2020 was when I became familiar with BTS -for several years it was Only BTS.
And then it dawned on me -BTS was collaborating with people I never heard of-they were talking about music from people I never heard of-and they were friends with so many other members of other groups.
So I ventured out !!
And I love the view out here !!
I’ve looked at the history of K-pop and really dug into several groups-and what I discovered-
There’s a whole lot of talent out there !
There are so many members who have worked super hard to get to where they are at.
My favorite performances were Seventeen and BigBang.
I sent one of my granddaughters BigBand’s performance, and my comment to her ?
“ now that’s what I call a concert performance !!!”
The love those three boys have for each other and the hard work they’ve put in, not just talent wise, but emotionally -
Well, let’s just say I wish I would’ve discovered them sooner !!
Katseye is the reason I watched Mama awards. They slayed.

Despite all the ongoing drama Hybe artists dominated MAMA! All the Illit members seem like lovely people to be with.
From your mention of Illit's concept, it can also be described like young girls dressing up like princesses and having a tea party. They embody the fantasy, casual or historic manhwa vibe

Seventeen have been consistently upping their game. And their choreo with that many members is always amazing.
And Illit just proves the best revenge is prospering. Big Bang holds a special place in K Pop and the younger generations know that. They have been through some real crappy times (esp G-Dragon) but still came out on top. I know Taeyang has been stretching his wings lately with his latest releases. And Jimin was just floored with his award. Jungkook always golden.
Seventeen really slayed! Their latest being a love song yet it was delivered powerfully. And of course they bagged two daesangs. They have been sensational this year, from Unesco, lalapalooza Berlin, Glastonbury festival and much more. Congratulations seventeen you deserve it🎉❤❤

There is a reason it was prerecorded here. Bruno already said the venue wasn't adequate. He didn't like the setup & wasnt allowing for rehearsals, camera angles and such. Bruno likes things done a certain way and Mama wasn't being very cooperative. Add to this not allowing for his band to play & bruno always plays with his band. So i don't blame him as this is Mama's fault here.

Treasure had the best performance 1.day, they literally made it their own concert. I think they was the only one singing live whole time without any backtrack. The fanchant during breakdance was insane, just prove how many Teumes was there. And they didn't just stay in the main stage but perform in many places and visited audience. It must been insane experience live.

Also my favourite moments include boynextdoor and TXT performances although TXT performance was not upto that level they did in previous years. They set their standard too high in previous years award performances. Still it was so beautiful and serene and verymuch TXT. BND was just full on fire...no wonder they got the favourite dance performance award

After TOP leaving, GD being investigated yet again for the same old bs and BBC revisiting the Burning Sun, I was like... Yeah GD is probably too exhausted to show up in public again. But then... Wow. Homie really got the power. The comeback he made needs phenomenal emotional strength not many ppl have. And somehow the group received a lot of love from the Korean GP after being dragged through the mud. Really inspirational. Fr. I don't think anyone who listens to Kpop no matter the fandom wasn't happy to see him on stage again.
I got into Kpop in 4th gen but I kn I was very thankful.
I watched MAMA off and on over the weekend and caught G-Dragon making an acceptance speech. He seemed awkward in an adorable way. Got me to look up his performance and I liked it. He has a good stage presence with a dash of quirk. And then when his boys showed up, and it amped up the vibe.
It’s been a while-I’m sure he was extremely nervous; he’s human after all. And so darn cute !!!

I honestly don't understand the logic behind all the hate that Hybe gets. Hybe is not perfect by any means, but neither are they nefarious - quite the opposite, they obviously give their artists so much support. And the Hybe artist performances at the MAMA is proof of that. The only reasonable explanation I can see is straight up crab mentality. The higher you rise, the more haters you're gonna get. I mean, just look at the line up of 2024 Billboard Award nominees for Kpop artists - 90% of them are from Hybe. Haters gonna hate, but Hybe gonna accelerate. 🤷♀
I mean, just the other day, I saw a report on a girl kpop artist trying to leave her group; she asked permission from the CEO, and his response was "only if you become my girlfriend for a day". And then he proceeded to try to shove his tongue down her throat. There were also allegedly complaints from other female artists about his behavior. WTF, why was THIS guy not called to the National Assembly? Sometimes, I really don't get the logic of kpop stans.
The reasons are quiet a few:
In SK it is that BH/HYBE are the unwanted "upstart" - how dare they be more successfull than the founding/Big 3 labels!/s
In the US/Canada/Europe it is more second gen fans that hate the "BTS paved the way" and argue with second gen x being first in something. They hate that HYBE artists overshadow their artists. Everything BTS/HYBE artists is doing is suspicious from the get go. They believe their own drama and are not interested in facts.
To that come actual blackmarket campaingns wich Sean has talked about in different videos. HYBE BOY I think mentioned one specific case were SM payed for HYBE hate during the HYBE + LSM vs. SM CEOs + Kakao stuff - which is for once actually proven by a company/news outlet that was not hired by HYBE.

Not to mention Red Velvet are older and more independent/going towords the end of their contract which means they may not stay after the end while aespa is more dependent.
Red Velvet is more niche in terms of music than aespa, too. Aespa actually has sales that point more like BP than Red Velvet.
The problem was that "fans" hated on Seunghan - the amount of funeral "wreaths" was breathtakingly sad - it looked like the head of state had died or something and they were promising to send a lot more again and again.

For most if not all the awards they won, there were objectively better nominees.

I liked Kate’s, Illit, Enhypens, IZNA, Yeonjun and of course Big Bang performances ❤ but the one held in U.S they could’ve at least have more artists performing or something lineup felt kind of empty.

I thought Boynextdoor were excellent! Very unexpected. Some faves were Seventeen, Katseye, IVE, RIIZE, Treasure - great performances from all the artists. Some were weak yes, but come on!!! The creativity was overflowing. The best, of course, was BIG BANG. Goosebumps at the excitement, and have re-watched several times.

Treasure and BigBang's performance diffinitely hyped up MAMA. Some performances made me sleepy.
Night 1 kicked off in L.A. and was well received. Discussions about future MAMA Awards Shows returning are quite positive. I loved Rose & Bruno's performance, it was great for TV. Japan's shows were epic. BigBang performed iconic songs and G-Dragon killed with his new single Power. Congratulations to IU, Jung Kook, Jimin and Seventeen on their respective wins. If I was a K-Pop artist I would sign with HYBE period.

14:40 No, actually, Seventeen debuted before NCT, and had been promoting under that name years and years even prior to that. Originally (way before debut), they had planned to have 17 members, but the perfect combination of members just never got to that number, so they ended up making sense of the name a different way. Yes, they do have official "units" (Hiphop, Vocal, Performance), but that's all combined to make 1 team and they do the majority of everything, including title tracks, etc., as 1 team of 13 members all together, unlike NCT, which effectively operates as more like several separate smaller groups, under 1 larger "team" umbrella.

Hihi I can always trust Sean / Seoulite for a little sassy shade 13:20. I am like many other ARMYs who proclaim that we are a BTS fan, not Kpop fan, and so we are not easily interested in other Kpop bands. Having said that, the exposure I have of other bands are through / due to BTS. I know Big Bang is huge and helped pave the way in many ways for K-artists like BTS but was only interested to know a bit more when Taeyang collaborated with Jimin and was on Suchwita; Seventeen because Mingyu is in the 97-line, good friends with Jungkook and Hoshi and Woozi were on Suchwita; TXT as the junior to BTS with Yeonjun and Taehyun (who were also on Suchwita) being part of Bighit wayyyy back; and Enhypen through BTS appearance in I-Land.
YET apart from Illit's touching acceptance speech, the only other thing from this MAMA that left an unfortunately negative impression on me was Enhypen's fans going on and on about their band deserving / robbed of the Daesang award that went to Jimin. From what I have read, the rules are tricky and there's some confusion and also perhaps lack of transparency in the fan voting system between the Bonsang and Daesang awards. But when they say Enhypen was robbed of / more deserving of the Daesang, that automatically means Jimin is less deserving, which I found to be really disrespectful towards him and BTS of which band that even Enhypen members look up to. They obviously also underestimate how organised ARMYs are. UGH.
And yeah, I am also not sure the hate towards HYBE, they are not perfect for sure and Bang PD trusting that certain someone was a clear mistake, but it's also credit to his vision and leadership / mentoring style that plays a major factor to leading BTS becoming the mammoth act that they now are (BTS members themselves being the main major factors of course).
Aepsa's part was a bit boring; Illit's part was cute; I was hoping to see TOP (Bigbang), even though I know he wouldn't be in the show... but still hoping to see him...

Need to see Katseye because what u showed looked interesting. it's a cool collab and i want to see the full stage. YT has not suggested it to me so I have to go and look for it. All the girls are super talented but I love Touch so far only. Looking forward to what they do next. I was totally not aware day 1 was in LA. Katseye are a global group so this makes so much sense. aespa's so mid and this is not even being disrespectful. they just simply lack what it takes to PERFORM ON A BIG STAGE, vocals aside, they lack the simple it factor it takes to command a stage. they lack that basic star power so them winning best dance performance or even choreography award made ZERO SENSE when there were other groups that absolutely ate this year. even if we talk in comparison, boynextdoor, who won in the male category proved on the very mama stage why they deserved their award.
people love to hate on hybe groups but its them who bring their A game when it comes to dazzling the stage or choreos or mvs.
literally all of them, illit, txt, enhypen, boynextdoor, tws, svt, katseye absolutely owned each of their stages and everybody deserved the category they won. the fact that none of them went empty handed speaks volumes and is a big slap to those who tried to sabotage them through false media play and manipulation. song of the year shouldve been magnetic and best dance performance + choreo shouldve been lsf.

The trying to bring together hollywood and kpop was a bit weird, awkward and the US audience seemed to lack energy and excitement. Japan was way better and boy when GD and Bigbang showed up brought back what MAMA used to be about it was electric. Seventeen, Enhyphen and other performances in Japan were top notch and probably a lot of them actually singing live.
We need to remember that a lot of people in United States aren’t truly familiar with K-pop-
Many of them only like “ their one group” and the lack of their enthusiasm for other groups really shows.
One take away from MAMA, it looks like Hybe and CJ E&M have reconciled.

BIGBANG was BY FAR my favorite performance. I've waited so long for them and especially GD that it made me so happy to see them again. but what also really made the performance so special is, that the WHOLE stadium was so thrilled and hyped all the kpop idols being even happier for them to be back than over their own awards. you could really see, how much respect they have for them and how they formed the industry so much. I really felt so happy seeing them getting the deserved admiration for their hard work and impact. the kpop world really healed for a moment.

Thank you the review. I think all the groups highlighted did well. Kpop is defin6a growing industry with American youth. I will be happy when there is an awards program that recognizes former K-pop artists when they age out of Kpop, but still produce and release great music. Kpop attists seem to be discarded once they enter the 30 years old and above age bracket. But this age is when they can really begin to write and sing music with great emotion and heart. Will there ever be a MAMA30+ version for older artists to be recognized?
I really didn't like Bruno Mars with Rose but, then I have to admit that at the moment I heard the song from them another old song popped up in my mind that I had forgotten. The song from Gwen Stephanie called Halloback.
