They are limiting the release in Latin America because they want to arrive after nominations & prices so the audience go to see it with a biased point of view… highly offensive, serious topic that hurts a huge population in Mex treated in an insensitive manner… it does hurt
As a Mexican the ultimate slap in the face was the part where a victim’s mother kisses Emilia’s hand… there are actual mothers and entire families that have been looking for their missing children and relatives for decades and they themselves become so vocal and such an inconvenience to criminals and politicians alike that they themselves end up going missing. It’s a very real, every day, extremely tragic problem. The idea that one of those mothers who have suffered so much will kiss the hand of someone responsible for that same crime is abhorrent. Picture this: a French movie that’s a musical about the USA’s school shootings where the script was written in poor, google translate English and the mother of a victim kisses a shooter’s hand for helping to find the kid’s dead body. Would that movie ever be made? No. This POS shouldn’t have been made either. It’s disgusting.
It's insulting that they'd depict these women as needing saving by Emilia, when the mothers of those missing become detectives, forensic experts and wilderness explorers themselves. They're their own fucking heroes.
And just because she transitioned she suddenly became “good”… the director doesn’t have a clue of how violent and cruel the narcos are, this character just changed by choice and when she is angry suddenly she has a “man” voice again because trans can switch between genders according to their emotions! (Such an insult to everyone!!)
A Mexican director needs to make a "french film" set in France but filmed in Mexico with non-french actors with bad translation, and watch the uproar in the euro/US press

That's actually what happened to my friend. We are Indonesian who ever studied in China few years ago, and then he has an audicity to say "Kha Pun Ka" which means "Thank You" in Thailand and we were in a Chinese restaurant!
We paid for mules to carry a couple bags down to the waterfalls in the bottom of the Grand Canyon where we were camping. There's a village down there occupied by Supai natives, and when we got our bags, one Supai guy was handing people their bags while wearing a cowboy hat, red flannel shirt, big belt buckle, jeans, cowboy boots and had a mustache. When he handed one guy his bag, he said "Gracias" to the Supai native American. This movie feels a bit like that, somebody walking away from a multicultural experience congratulating themselves for treating a brown person like a human being for 10 minutes.
I still find it funny how every demographic this movie should've appealed to hates this movie with a passion, makes sense that award critics who are most far-removed from those demographics like this movie

I’m Mexican + trans and the thing is Mexico does have a long and turbulent history with gender non conformity that is totally left out of this film. It’s a film about trans Mexicans for pretentious foreigners who do not want to engage or learn about what being trans actually is, using their surface level knowledge of Mexico based on watching Netflix shows lol.
Yes if the director had done his job properly the movie could've been something that brought these things to a worldwide audience to keep these conversations going

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m a white nonbinary American & I know I’m not the person to tell the story of a Mexican trans women’s journey. If anything I’m saying is incorrect, I welcome feedback & criticisms. One of my understandings about Latino culture, specifically for the men is a term called Machismo - their unique expression of masculinity. I would genuinely love to see a film about a trans Mexican woman’s journey about what is like to grow up w/culture of masculinity, the good & the bad, while knowing deep down they’re trans & to see them fully embrace & accept themselves. I’d like to see how that impacts their relationships w/their family. Emilia had no male family members except for her sons. I want to see the gender dysphoria & then the gender euphoria after the gender affirming care. I can only imagine how it must’ve felt to see such a hollow portrayal that doesn’t understand what trans women, especially Mexican trans experience at all. 🫂
Exactly. We have one of, if not the highest transfemicide rate in THE WORLD, and femicidal violence in México, esp northern México where the main character is from, is inextricably tied to narco. This was such a missed opportunity and instead became deeply insulting.

Because for Hollywood, the brown people from third world countries aren’t real people. That’s why “I’m Still Here” that is about actual struggles of Latin people got snubbed while Emilia Perez which is a performative activism about white people pretending to care about brown people keeps winning.
I haven't seen that, but I was pretty upset that the Globes haven't awarded to "All We Imagine as Light" or "The Seed of the Sacred Fig". That is very upsetting.

Fortunately, Fernanda Torres won best actress in a drama film above the big names that were competing with her. This is a phenomenal film and a great milestone for brazilian audiovisual.

In Latin America, there's consensus that the linguistic problem of Emilia Perez is the script. Selena's character said a lot of insults and phrases that are commonly said by a person who is fluent in Spanish, but her character isn't fluent, so that's why it feels so weird for Spanish speaking people. There are also some translation mistakes. For example, in the song “Bienvenida” (I can't remember if that's the name but this word is mentioned a lot), they translated “you're welcome” literally, but in the context of the song the most correct translation would've been “De nada”. I study Linguistics here, so it's kinda disgusting to see the script writers didn't take the time to study Spanish dialects. There are a lot of very talented Mexican and Latin American linguists that could've helped with that.

Not knowing when to translate you’re welcome to bienvenida or to de nada is literally stuff google translate messes up, it’s some of the most basic stuff you learn abt Spanish or Portuguese bc that’s literally used in EVERY beginner’s class conversation.

This is just in: They're promoting the movie in Mexico, Jacques Audiard was supposed to have a forum with film students today but the dude bailed bc the event kinda became viral and some people were talking about confronting him in person. Adriana Paz, the only mexican actress in the entire cast, was the only that showed up to talk and answer questions from the students. She's a true proessional and a class act while Audiard is not only a pretentious talentless hack, but also a spineless coward .
I would not say "talentless", Audiard has a pretty strong filmography before that movie. That said Emilia Perez and anything around it is clearly weak.

Me and my family are from Brazil, my dad is republican and is currently working in the US and he got to watch Emilia Perez and said he liked it, i asked why and he said that it's because "these things happen, people completely change themselves" because in his mind nobody transitions because of actual disphoria, they only do it to be disruptive or escape from the law, and this movie just made that worse, he doesn't see Emilia as an actual woman, just a man who transitioned to run away and that is one of the many reasons i don't like this movie May fernanda torres save us all
Emilia sings her heart out in the movie, PRE-transition, about how she felt unhappy and incomplete all her life, how she's always wanted to live as Emilia, how she's always felt like half a human being, like what are you even talking about? I watched the movie twice and to my recollection there is no mention ever of Emilia wanting to transition only as a reason to escape from the law.

my fave part about this movie was the fact that they used google translate to write the you're welcome song (youre welcome as a response to thank you = de nada, but the song is called "bienvenida" (bienvenida= youre welcome as in thanks for coming)
I was honestly really confused with that song as an English speaker who studied Spanish because I was like, “Doesn’t Bienvenida mean ‘welcome’?” My text book in college literally had a huge “¡BIENVENIDA!” across the front. This movie made me second guess if I was wrong while speaking to every Spanish speaker in my life when I said “De nada”.
A really good point that i heard from another youtuber is that they always expect foreigners to have perfect English accents when they speak, but other languages aren't held to the same standard. And suddenly when we're calling out Selena Gómez's terrible performance we should "take her effort into account". And it doesn't even matter that they cast a Spanish person and an American one with a Dominican accent right?

There's one scene in Emilia Perez that ruined any substance the movie had or any empathy I could have for the main character, Emilia. The scene is when Rita is interrogating cartel members to get information about where they dumped bodies so they can rediscover them for their charity organization. In the scene, the cartel members go into graphic detail about how they took these peoples' lives. I'm not from Mexico and I don't have extensive knowledge about the cartel, but I have seen how vicious they are from shock videos online. With what I've seen and heard about the cartels' crimes, I could not feel bad for Emilia by the end of the movie. Her death seemed justified. When her fingers were sent to Rita, I didn't feel any empathy for Emilia or any urgency to save her. All I could think about was all the things she did before she transitioned, all the cruel things she did to innocent people. To critics and academy members who do not know how ruthless the cartel is, this movie can be enjoyable to them. But to everyone who is aware of how the cartel works, this is the most insensitive movie to come out as of late.
I think the worse part for me was that Epifania forgives her symbolically and practically even though Emilia "disappeared" her husband, but it's ok, because he was abusive. Like...this is so inutterably dishonest and such a copout it left me even more disgusted than before. The situation in Mexico is tragic, and people still don't know what absolute monsters those in the cartels are, and how much those around them are endangered and stifled. I genuinely have no idea who thought this movie was remotely a good idea.
This was my biggest gripe with the movie. Just because she transitioned doesn’t change the fact that she’s a cartel leader and a horrible person. Faking your own death and putting your wife and children through an unimaginable amount of pain just to Mrs. Doubtfire your way back into their lives is sick. Also, why the f*ck would you hire a lawyer for this? I genuinely couldn’t get past that.
Like i said once: this movie feels like if someone made a musical about Jeffrey dahner and he redeem himself after becoming a trans and invite all the families of his victims to support him/her on the LGTB right. The film kills her at the end to prove the point that transitioning and living authentically does not negate the harm she has done, but, more importantly, it outlines that Emelia's character is corrupted pre- and post-transitioning. She is flawed and irredeemable. As a trans person, I appreciate that nuanced look because she is a troubled human who's had to be ruthless to survive as a trans person, and that's a mask for most of her life, and in that mask, she commits horrendous crimes. But over time, she gets in her head that somehow, if she could free herself of this life, she's built to protect herself and live authentically. But she does so without any connection to the queer trans community, and it's problematic because she perpetuates transphobic attitudes and behaviours. So your not suppose to feel sad for her in the end.

Completely agree that this movie wasn’t made for the people it purports to represent. It’s made for so-called American/European “high culture” “progressive” people who don’t speak Spanish and know nothing about Mexico. Hence why it’s winning the awards in those areas. The director and casting director’s dishonesty is incredible: “It was really important for us to cast a trans actor for representation, but the Mexican culture and the country’s very real and serious issues we chose to make this movie about? Nah, we don’t need to bother too much with that. [The important people won’t notice.]” You mean to tell me you could not find three competent actresses in the entire country of Mexico? How are you not embarrassed to say that out loud to a crowd? They had to change a character’s backstory, not because it made for a better story but because the ‘best’ actress for the role (Selena) struggles to get two words out in Spanish. I don’t blame the actors that much. I blame the director-who by the way also does not speak one word of Spanish or English. His golden globe speech had to be translated from French. Even though Zoe and the Emilia actress’ Spanish is fluent, they do not manage to pull off a Mexican accent. Not even close. You pair that with dialog which seems to have come out of an early version of Google translate, PLUS the ‘artistic’ musical numbers, and you end up with an offensive clusterf*uck that will nonetheless win awards in non-Spanish speaking places because the film is so ‘artistic’ and there’s a trans woman which of course automatically means it’s progressive. 🙄🙄🙄

I don't even think it's a good "high culture" movie, because a Cartel leader transitioning and suddenly becoming good and not being held accountable for all the crimes they committed is just offensively bad writing. If anything, the only Latin American movie that deserves any recognition in the Oscar run is the Brazilian “Ainda Estou Aqui”. Not only it is a much better movie in general, but is portrays a universal experience for all the countries in LATAM that suffered with dictatorships due to USA interfering with their governments by directly supporting and funding military coups.
"I'm still here" is a movie that really represents Latin America, the military dictatorship not only happened in Brazil, but also in other latin America countries like Argentina and Chile. I hope that with all the criticism about Emilia Perez, people give a chance and watch it.

As a trans woman, I’m honestly super super glad you made this video, because I was gearing up to watch this, and you were probably one of the few creators who I would trust about a video covering topics like this… when I saw other TH-camrs making videos about this I kind of disregarded them, but I now know that I would LITERALLY have a mental breakdown in the middle of the theater because of the way they seemingly went about the film’s trans representation.

Hi! The movie is out today in France, that's why there are critics about it. But everything I've read or listened about it was really positive, I think that one critic not liking the movie doesn't mean nothing.(On the website allociné, critics rating are 4.1/5 and viewers are 4/5.) I'm going to watch it, it seems great!
As a colombian, a country with a massive history of v1olence by cartels and the same government, the way this movie banalized the pain and suffering from the families almost gaslighting them, it's beyond words
It gave a cartel leader a free pass from the past crimes simply because he transitioned into a woman, which seems offensive to the cartel victims and fuel even more to the conservative’s negative stereotype of trans people.

How do you make a movie that takes place in Mexico and don’t hire a single Mexican actor for the film? That was red flag number one right there. Secondly, Selena’s Spanish was god awful. So many great actors and actresses in Mexico and Latin America and they chose this cast instead.
In fairness, they did hire a token Mexican - the lovely woman who portrayed Emilia Perez' love interest. Having said that, from all the backlash I've read (I'm white-straight-Anglo), it appears that there was no consultation with Mexican creatives nor even any attempt for any credible input, and the songs are god-awful! Also, I found the acting - meh - and didn't care about any of the main characters. The plot was all over the place - it was entertaining in parts but in general, I found it dumb! Joker - Folie a Deux is better.
Can we all agree to support I'm Still Here as the Latin American film choice for this year’s Oscars? I mean, that's a movie that explores the violence of Brazil’s military dictatorship - something many Latin American countries experienced -and features an extraordinary performance by Fernanda Torres as a woman fighting to keep her family together after her husband is taken by the government. And let’s not forget: this could also serve as poetic justice for her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who lost the Oscar to Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love, and taking this from Emilia Perez.
If you want an actually GREAT film about the trans experience mixed with some 90’s analogue horror that lots of people enjoyed go watch “I Saw the TV Glow” if you can get it. Absolutely haunting and it looks incredible. This is the type of art we SHOULD be awarding 😤
And if people want to support a film that addresses the experience of violence in Latin America during the dictatorship, I'm Still Here is an excellent choice.

This is a movie that delves into the violence of Brazil’s military dictatorship (an experience many Latin American countries endured) and showcases an extraordinary performance by Fernanda Torres as a woman struggling to keep her family together after her husband is taken by the government and given as a missing person. And let’s not forget: this could also serve as poetic justice for her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who lost the Oscar to Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love. Plus, it would mean taking this victory away from Emilia Perez.
I will say, I found it surprising that when I did go to watch this finally after the Globes, it was sooooo hidden, and Netflix is NEVER shy about promoting their awards (like they had 'Emmy Nominated' on the poster for 3 Body Problem for ages even when it didnt win any of its noms). That felt very, uh, telling....And then I watched the film, and .
And it hasn’t even been shown to Mexican audiences on Netflix. They are waiting for the Oscars to announce the nominations and then release it to Mexican audiences
It's hard to deny that it's ambitious, but something like that should not be distributed by Netflix. That was a major blunder. It needs to have a massive presence in theaters. But no. Hell, I would root for The Nickel Boys over this.

As a French-speaking person from Belgium, it's very interesting to see how much people don't seem to like this movie. Because French media seem to portray it as a masterpiece and because a lot of the conversations around it in French-speaking countries is pretty positive, I thought the reception for it would be better and that it was actually a pretty good film. But apparently the difference between the way it's talked about and the reality of things seems pretty huge. I'm guessing French people want this movie to be a success because it is essentially a movie from their country (despite the fact that it's about Mexico) and that's why they portray it in such a positive light. Some medias have even compared it to the success of Anatomy of a Fall from last year, so they probably want lightning to strike twice and see this movie getting awards too (and maybe by extension give a good wrap to French cinema and help building it a good reputation on the international scene, but that's probably just me extrapolating).
If France wants another win they literally have The Substance it also has a french director and was filmed entirely in France and it's a socially conscious film

Oh, France has lost it entirely now.....politics. It's politics.It's the fraught algorithm of how favorable or unfavorable the government was to any given director, and how favorable or not the establishment are to the government in any given moment, and they'll bury or extoll anything. They always were sorta eyeroll-inducing in the last three decades, but they did have standards. Now they just flex on the audiences. The weird thing is how Audiard ended up doing this. After his previous movies, which were so introspective and low-tone.

I would like to hear the opinion from the seeking mothers who have years looking for their sons taken by the cartels. There is a lot of things of this movie that make me sick, Karla being racist to mexicans that unapproved the movie, Selena saying that she likes to "connect with her mexican roots" with her poor spanish and justifying herself saying that "she even made an spanish album" and "she did her best with her whole heart" but what pissed me off the most was the director saying that he didn't need to research nothing because he already knew everything he needed about a topic that affects a thousands of families and making it a complete joke
As a non-native Spanish speaker, Selena Gomez’s Spanish is atrocious to me too!! She doesn’t sound like she understands anything. I also 100% agree that the choice to have her Spanish be broken was because she couldn’t grasp the language.

I’m a second generation chicana that is actually learning some Spanish because I’m at a beginner level. some people online have said that the scene with Selena Gomez which has her sing in Spanish sounded like Dothraki from game of thrones which I heavily agree on. The fact that it was horribly received in Mexico shows that this movie wasn’t made for my community.

I am not Mexican, but I have lived and worked in rural Oaxaca for many years and I take a lot a pride in having a Oaxacan accent. It is something I have worked hard at in order to better adapt to the people and culture I am living in. Zoe's accent is so much "I just learned Spanish and I'm barely trying" and Selena doesn't even try. Accents in Latin America are very specific, down to the state and region. This is just terrible.
When you said the music was bad I was expecting something more akin to like 2000’s pop-something that just doesn’t fit with the emotions of the scenes. I wasn’t expecting the funniest thing I’ve actually ever heard.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for interviewing Mexican people. As a Mexican, I can say that I agree with everything they said. The way our culture is glazed over and they name drop some references about it. The way that it treats the very very complex topic about cartels, people who've disappeared, and LGBTQ+ rights is way beyond tone deaf. There is a nuance to this! Also, while I don't deny the effort of the actors of the film, it feels like a slap in the face that they couldn't cast a single Mexican in the leading or supporting roles. To put it in perspective, Emilia Perez is to Mexico what Emily in Paris is to France.

EVERY. SINGLE. THING. This film was all over the place, tone-deaf, offensive. It should've focused on just Rita, or just Emilia (with a better story of the trans experience). It didn't need to be a musical. At all. And the music is so random, half-baked, and unremarkably staged that outside of Zoe's numbers (which succeed solely because of her) they are inconsequential. It's just wrong. And yes, see Conclave. So fucking good!!!!
Not to rain on anybody's parade-specifically Zoe Saldana's-but I don't think anyone is surprised that she's involved in a movie that lacks authenticity. This is the same actress who chose to play a Blackface version of Nina Simone in a film produced by a white person. Despite Black people expressing that there were better casting options and directly voicing their concerns, she ignored them. Instead, she framed the criticism as people accusing her of not being "Black enough." In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, she publicly expressed regret for her actions, even shedding tears, but by then, the damage had been done. People didn’t pay much attention to her portrayal, likely because it failed to do justice to the legendary Nina Simone, a singer with distinctly Afrocentric features. As an Afro-Latina with a much lighter complexion, Saldana was a poor fit for the role, and the decision to cast her felt like a disservice to Nina’s legacy. Now, we're here again discussing a lack of authenticity-this time with Zoe working on a project with a white director that fails to reflect the people or region it's based on. This isn’t new territory; we’ve been here before.
I saw this movie because Selena was promoting it, and while I enjoyed it at the time, I have to concede the critics are right. The French director already gave me pause, but to learn he didn’t even do research into Mexico, then proceeded to make a film about a super-sensitive issue? Yikes. And while I was relieved they cast a trans actress to play Emilia, that’s the bare minimum. Hollywood needs to work harder to prioritize diversity and authenticity behind the camera and on the committees involved in awards shows and film festivals.
I'm a trans person. To some extent, I resonate with the idea of transition as rebirth, as for me, it kind of was. I came out during the first COVID lockdowns at probably the lowest pojnt in my life, and partly through transitioning, I was able to come back to myself and emerge effectively as a new person. That being said, I'm not actually a new person. My memories of the before-times may be a bit hazy and sometimes they do feel like they happened to someone else, but the reality is that they're still all of my memories, I still hold responsibility for all of my actions, and I still act and react to things in the same ways that I did before. I'm older and wiser, more authentic and more comfortable in myself, but if I'm upset I'm still going to go to my room, put on some sad music, and then read a book. My rebirth was symbolic, rather than literal. Before transitioning, I had basically given up on life. After, I felt like my life was just beginning. If Emilia Perez had truly wanted to commit to that theme of rebirth while still remaining authentic to the trans experience, I personally see two routes they could have taken: 1) Commit to Emilia as a hero. Seed the idea that she is deeply conflicted and unhappy with the person she has become and the harm she is causing right from the start, but feels trapped within the machismo and the nature of her position in society and sees no way out. Transition then becomes not only her way to become more authentically herself, but her way of escaping a role she never wanted in the first place - the brutal cartel leader is a mask she wore for survival. She doesn't "Mrs Doubtfire" her family beyond the initial pretence to get them to Switzerland, and instead of the conflict being around her deception, it is around whether they are able to both accept her, and forgive her past actions. Her attempts to help her past victims are more earnest, and her death at the end is due to Gustavo finding out and trying to ransom her to the cartels while Jessi tries to stop him. Emilia functions as an anti-hero, with more of an emphasis on cartels as a SYSTEM of power, exploitation, and abuse, rather than Emilia as "bad man who becomes good woman and is absolved of her sins because she's nice now (except for the part where she beats her wife, but that's because the man part of her came out again)". OR 2) They commit to the idea of Emilia as a bad person. She doesn't wish to stop being a cartel leader, but she feels unable to transition openly without risking others seeing her as weak, and taking advantage of her incapacitated state during surgery, so she fakes her own death and re-emerges as Emilia Perez. Here, the Mrs Doubtfire plot makes more sense from a character perspective - Emilia is a deceptive person - and it's a way to directly keep an eye on the only people she truly cares about. Her attempts to help the victims are more cynical, with her seeing it as both a way to screw over the people who have moved in on her old empire, and much like the corrupt non-profit donors in 'El Mal', she sees a role as a charitable ambassador, especially with her knowledge of cartels, as a way to gain power, wealth, and influence by another route. Maybe she has some moments of genuine remorse and realisation at times, but it's unclear whether it causes her to genuinely change her worldview, and part of the tension in the latter part of the movie coming from both the audience and the characters not knowing how much of her redemption is genuine and how much is fake. Her death at the end of the movie could happen in a similar way to the actual movie, but with the eulogy explicitly framed as Rita spinning the narrative, rather than as a genuine celebration of her "fight for truth and freedom". Obviously, these are just my basic ideas. Someone with a better knowledge of cartels, Mexican culture, and the movie as a whole, could likely do a better job. I think the first one would be better as positive representation, and could offer more room to explore the true nature of cartels through Emilia's struggle and genuine attempts to use her knowledge of how they work and the systems that support them to protect others. Her status as a martyr is earned, and while tragic, leaves the viewer with a sense of hope for the future. The latter is more of a classic thriller/character study of a deeply flawed and ruthless character, which could be some people's cup of tea, and I think that we SHOULD be able to portray complex trans villains, just as we can have movies exploring the complex cis male villains (e.g. The Godfather). However, I think it's a much harder tightrope to walk, as you risk running into all of the classic tropes of trans women as violent men at heart, and at a time when hostility towards trans women is on the rise, I think it would be slightly tone deaf to have a movie in which the trans woman is a brutal murderer who beats her wife after lying about her identity for months... oh wait. Along with being a lot darker and more of a downer, the ending, instead of being hopeful, feels like a facade. A lie told to make people feel hopeful while business continues as usual, mirroring how Emilia's switch to activism was cynical and surface level, and in reality just represented more of the same exploitation, but wrapped up in a nicer package - much like Emilia herself.
Rita did not agree to meet Manitas. She was kidnapped. About Selena… Non-native speakers who speak Spanish as a second language will have an accent, and that’s normal, but Selena doesn’t even sound like a foreigner speaking Spanish. The feeling, even for those of us who speak Spanish as a second language, is that she simply memorized lines in a language that isn’t Spanish and that only makes sense to her and the French director who doesn’t speak Spanish. It seems like she doesn’t even know what she’s saying, and that makes her performance superficial and disconnected. She doesn’t seem like a bad actress when acting in English. I felt sorry for her because someone involved in the project should have prevented her from being embarrassed like this. Her Golden Globe nomination was like … WTF??? Her performance deserves a Razzie.
Does anyone else felt creeped out about the scene where they sing about the procedures? Maybe "creeped out" is not the right phrase... The mood and tone of the song felt disturbing, off. Procedures are already scary and it felt it shouldn't be approached that way, like Manitas was doing something wrong, kind of demonising the gender-affirming surgeries or putting them in a bad light when it's the opposite. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Don't know if it makes sense...

@@LulaRu I viewed it as a representation of what uninformed people believe vaginoplasty and gender-affirming surgery to be, just dialed up to 10 and separated from reality due to the musical nature of the film. Rita wasn't taking it seriously, which is why the very next scene was her getting attacked by Emilia's men and them saying "why are you fucking around?"

Thank you for this spot-on commentary. I am a Mexican-American very knowledgable in film, and this movie on paper sounded like right up my alley. When the film opens and we hear "se compran colchones...", a distinctive Mexico City street sound, I felt hopeful, and that excitement quickly took a nose dive. Mexico is a perfectly criticizable nation, and we're aware of our problems. Still, we can see when a portrayal comes from a place of consciousness or a place of stereotype. I assure you, that if a European film were made about the US, using actors with Jamaican accents, no one would give it a chance. This movie has a lot of balls, and I respect that about art, but It made no effort to respect Mexico, Mexicans, and frankly the trans experience.

Thanks for saving me some time, I had this on my list because of award season, but now I know I can skip it entirely. With this and the clips I had seen before I'm convinced this is an ego project of people who couldn't care less about what they're actually portraying. I'm Latina and I'm sick of how the film industry wants to show Latin America.
Very interesting to hear the discourse around this film, as I previously was unsure what it was about, but it also seemed to be sweeping the awards at the golden globes. It is a shame that the film makers couldn’t fully do justice to the groups they were basing this film off of. It was lovely to get the opinions of viewers of the channel to add some extra context to the discourse as well!

I know The Internet generally rags on the French, but when the French director is on the record saying he doesn’t need to know anything about Mexican culture as long as he knows how to make a good film, the art speaks for itself. in the end, it’s not even a good film either!

I don’t have a problem with the casting or creators: Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer aren’t Austrian, and Rodgers and Hammerstein aren’t either. Or where it was filmed. Lots of films are made in proxy locations. But the language/slang critique is legit. The failure to capture the cultural nuances is legit. And the mess of story/plot is a bigger problem than casting.
Wait in the movie, she “reverts to man” to become threatening when angry and fighting with someone (let alone a woman)? That’s a DISGUSTINGly ignorant portrayal for so many reasons
Casting Selena Gomez (and even Zoe) and saying they couldn't find anyone better when there are literally people like Melissa Barrera on the scene. Even Anya Taylor Joy would've made more sense and her Spanish is way better. But glad neither of those two got pulled into this dumpster fire.
Between this video and the comments, it's hands down the best explanation for the problems with this film I've seen. I heard about people being upset, so I knew there was an issue. I just didn't know what exactly was infuriating (I don't have Netflix and folks online are venting more than they're explaining). I kept seeing complaints in general about how Mexico hates the movie or some folks not seeming to understand that Selena's character wouldn't sound native, but the way all of you broke down exactly what the problem is with the script and her delivery, down to the line and with social context was really incredible. It's a masterclass, honestly.
As a Mexican can I add how confusing it is UsA/Europeans always say “listen to marginalized voices, let poc tell their stories” and then only listen to american and europeans with vague ancestry that have never lived or talk the language when US, the people they want to represent can act, direct and write too? Want a big movie touching cultural topics, fund it and send some video photographers / budget professionals to set up the production and let the PEOPLE who the story is about do the rest

This film is like if a Mexican made a movie about the Bataclan with zero French actors, getting the information of what happened from fricking facebooks posts, writing the whole thing in Spanish and using google translate instead of a real translator. I totally agree with Samantha, the movie has way bigger problems that Selena speaking a horrible Spanish, it looks like a mockery to México and to such a delicate theme that is the Narcotrafico and the violence that this brings, it literally feels like an insult to Mexicans

As a Mexican the ultimate slap in the face was the part where a victim’s mother kisses Emilia’s hand… there are actual mothers and entire families that have been looking for their missing children and relatives for decades and they themselves become so vocal and such an inconvenience to criminals and politicians alike that they themselves end up going missing. It’s a very real, every day, extremely tragic problem.
The idea that one of those mothers who have suffered so much will kiss the hand of someone responsible for that same crime is abhorrent.
Picture this: a French movie that’s a musical about the USA’s school shootings where the script was written in poor, google translate English and the mother of a victim kisses a shooter’s hand for helping to find the kid’s dead body. Would that movie ever be made? No. This POS shouldn’t have been made either. It’s disgusting.

We paid for mules to carry a couple bags down to the waterfalls in the bottom of the Grand Canyon where we were camping. There's a village down there occupied by Supai natives, and when we got our bags, one Supai guy was handing people their bags while wearing a cowboy hat, red flannel shirt, big belt buckle, jeans, cowboy boots and had a mustache. When he handed one guy his bag, he said "Gracias" to the Supai native American.
This movie feels a bit like that, somebody walking away from a multicultural experience congratulating themselves for treating a brown person like a human being for 10 minutes.

I’m Mexican + trans and the thing is Mexico does have a long and turbulent history with gender non conformity that is totally left out of this film. It’s a film about trans Mexicans for pretentious foreigners who do not want to engage or learn about what being trans actually is, using their surface level knowledge of Mexico based on watching Netflix shows lol.
Yes if the director had done his job properly the movie could've been something that brought these things to a worldwide audience to keep these conversations going

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m a white nonbinary American & I know I’m not the person to tell the story of a Mexican trans women’s journey. If anything I’m saying is incorrect, I welcome feedback & criticisms. One of my understandings about Latino culture, specifically for the men is a term called Machismo - their unique expression of masculinity. I would genuinely love to see a film about a trans Mexican woman’s journey about what is like to grow up w/culture of masculinity, the good & the bad, while knowing deep down they’re trans & to see them fully embrace & accept themselves. I’d like to see how that impacts their relationships w/their family. Emilia had no male family members except for her sons. I want to see the gender dysphoria & then the gender euphoria after the gender affirming care. I can only imagine how it must’ve felt to see such a hollow portrayal that doesn’t understand what trans women, especially Mexican trans experience at all. 🫂
Exactly. We have one of, if not the highest transfemicide rate in THE WORLD, and femicidal violence in México, esp northern México where the main character is from, is inextricably tied to narco. This was such a missed opportunity and instead became deeply insulting.

Fortunately, Fernanda Torres won best actress in a drama film above the big names that were competing with her. This is a phenomenal film and a great milestone for brazilian audiovisual.

In Latin America, there's consensus that the linguistic problem of Emilia Perez is the script. Selena's character said a lot of insults and phrases that are commonly said by a person who is fluent in Spanish, but her character isn't fluent, so that's why it feels so weird for Spanish speaking people. There are also some translation mistakes. For example, in the song “Bienvenida” (I can't remember if that's the name but this word is mentioned a lot), they translated “you're welcome” literally, but in the context of the song the most correct translation would've been “De nada”. I study Linguistics here, so it's kinda disgusting to see the script writers didn't take the time to study Spanish dialects. There are a lot of very talented Mexican and Latin American linguists that could've helped with that.

Adriana Paz, the only mexican actress in the entire cast, was the only that showed up to talk and answer questions from the students. She's a true proessional and a class act while Audiard is not only a pretentious talentless hack, but also a spineless coward .

Me and my family are from Brazil, my dad is republican and is currently working in the US and he got to watch Emilia Perez and said he liked it, i asked why and he said that it's because "these things happen, people completely change themselves" because in his mind nobody transitions because of actual disphoria, they only do it to be disruptive or escape from the law, and this movie just made that worse, he doesn't see Emilia as an actual woman, just a man who transitioned to run away and that is one of the many reasons i don't like this movie

I was honestly really confused with that song as an English speaker who studied Spanish because I was like, “Doesn’t Bienvenida mean ‘welcome’?” My text book in college literally had a huge “¡BIENVENIDA!” across the front. This movie made me second guess if I was wrong while speaking to every Spanish speaker in my life when I said “De nada”.
A really good point that i heard from another youtuber is that they always expect foreigners to have perfect English accents when they speak, but other languages aren't held to the same standard. There's one scene in Emilia Perez that ruined any substance the movie had or any empathy I could have for the main character, Emilia. The scene is when Rita is interrogating cartel members to get information about where they dumped bodies so they can rediscover them for their charity organization. In the scene, the cartel members go into graphic detail about how they took these peoples' lives. I'm not from Mexico and I don't have extensive knowledge about the cartel, but I have seen how vicious they are from shock videos online. With what I've seen and heard about the cartels' crimes, I could not feel bad for Emilia by the end of the movie. Her death seemed justified. When her fingers were sent to Rita, I didn't feel any empathy for Emilia or any urgency to save her. All I could think about was all the things she did before she transitioned, all the cruel things she did to innocent people. To critics and academy members who do not know how ruthless the cartel is, this movie can be enjoyable to them. But to everyone who is aware of how the cartel works, this is the most insensitive movie to come out as of late.
I think the worse part for me was that Epifania forgives her symbolically and practically even though Emilia "disappeared" her husband, but it's ok, because he was abusive. Like...this is so inutterably dishonest and such a copout it left me even more disgusted than before. The situation in Mexico is tragic, and people still don't know what absolute monsters those in the cartels are, and how much those around them are endangered and stifled. I genuinely have no idea who thought this movie was remotely a good idea.
This was my biggest gripe with the movie. Just because she transitioned doesn’t change the fact that she’s a cartel leader and a horrible person. Faking your own death and putting your wife and children through an unimaginable amount of pain just to Mrs. Doubtfire your way back into their lives is sick. Also, why the f*ck would you hire a lawyer for this? I genuinely couldn’t get past that.

The film kills her at the end to prove the point that transitioning and living authentically does not negate the harm she has done, but, more importantly, it outlines that Emelia's character is corrupted pre- and post-transitioning. She is flawed and irredeemable. As a trans person, I appreciate that nuanced look because she is a troubled human who's had to be ruthless to survive as a trans person, and that's a mask for most of her life, and in that mask, she commits horrendous crimes. But over time, she gets in her head that somehow, if she could free herself of this life, she's built to protect herself and live authentically. But she does so without any connection to the queer trans community, and it's problematic because she perpetuates transphobic attitudes and behaviours.
So your not suppose to feel sad for her in the end.

Completely agree that this movie wasn’t made for the people it purports to represent. It’s made for so-called American/European “high culture” “progressive” people who don’t speak Spanish and know nothing about Mexico. Hence why it’s winning the awards in those areas. The director and casting director’s dishonesty is incredible: “It was really important for us to cast a trans actor for representation, but the Mexican culture and the country’s very real and serious issues we chose to make this movie about? Nah, we don’t need to bother too much with that. [The important people won’t notice.]” You mean to tell me you could not find three competent actresses in the entire country of Mexico? How are you not embarrassed to say that out loud to a crowd? They had to change a character’s backstory, not because it made for a better story but because the ‘best’ actress for the role (Selena) struggles to get two words out in Spanish. I don’t blame the actors that much. I blame the director-who by the way also does not speak one word of Spanish or English. His golden globe speech had to be translated from French. Even though Zoe and the Emilia actress’ Spanish is fluent, they do not manage to pull off a Mexican accent. Not even close. You pair that with dialog which seems to have come out of an early version of Google translate, PLUS the ‘artistic’ musical numbers, and you end up with an offensive clusterf*uck that will nonetheless win awards in non-Spanish speaking places because the film is so ‘artistic’ and there’s a trans woman which of course automatically means it’s progressive. 🙄🙄🙄

If anything, the only Latin American movie that deserves any recognition in the Oscar run is the Brazilian “Ainda Estou Aqui”.
Not only it is a much better movie in general, but is portrays a universal experience for all the countries in LATAM that suffered with dictatorships due to USA interfering with their governments by directly supporting and funding military coups.
"I'm still here" is a movie that really represents Latin America, the military dictatorship not only happened in Brazil, but also in other latin America countries like Argentina and Chile. I hope that with all the criticism about Emilia Perez, people give a chance and watch it.

As a colombian, a country with a massive history of v1olence by cartels and the same government, the way this movie banalized the pain and suffering from the families almost gaslighting them, it's beyond words
It gave a cartel leader a free pass from the past crimes simply because he transitioned into a woman, which seems offensive to the cartel victims and fuel even more to the conservative’s negative stereotype of trans people.

How do you make a movie that takes place in Mexico and don’t hire a single Mexican actor for the film? That was red flag number one right there. Secondly, Selena’s Spanish was god awful. So many great actors and actresses in Mexico and Latin America and they chose this cast instead.
In fairness, they did hire a token Mexican - the lovely woman who portrayed Emilia Perez' love interest. Having said that, from all the backlash I've read (I'm white-straight-Anglo), it appears that there was no consultation with Mexican creatives nor even any attempt for any credible input, and the songs are god-awful! If you want an actually GREAT film about the trans experience mixed with some 90’s analogue horror that lots of people enjoyed go watch “I Saw the TV Glow” if you can get it. Absolutely haunting and it looks incredible. This is the type of art we SHOULD be awarding 😤
And if people want to support a film that addresses the experience of violence in Latin America during the dictatorship, I'm Still Here is an excellent choice.

I will say, I found it surprising that when I did go to watch this finally after the Globes, it was sooooo hidden, and Netflix is NEVER shy about promoting their awards (like they had 'Emmy Nominated' on the poster for 3 Body Problem for ages even when it didnt win any of its noms). That felt very, uh, telling....And then I watched the film, and .
And it hasn’t even been shown to Mexican audiences on Netflix. They are waiting for the Oscars to announce the nominations and then release it to Mexican audiences

As a French-speaking person from Belgium, it's very interesting to see how much people don't seem to like this movie. Because French media seem to portray it as a masterpiece and because a lot of the conversations around it in French-speaking countries is pretty positive, I thought the reception for it would be better and that it was actually a pretty good film. But apparently the difference between the way it's talked about and the reality of things seems pretty huge. I'm guessing French people want this movie to be a success because it is essentially a movie from their country (despite the fact that it's about Mexico) and that's why they portray it in such a positive light. Some medias have even compared it to the success of Anatomy of a Fall from last year, so they probably want lightning to strike twice and see this movie getting awards too (and maybe by extension give a good wrap to French cinema and help building it a good reputation on the international scene, but that's probably just me extrapolating).

Oh, France has lost it entirely now.....politics. There is a lot of things of this movie that make me sick, Karla being racist to mexicans that unapproved the movie, Selena saying that she likes to "connect with her mexican roots" with her poor spanish and justifying herself saying that "she even made an spanish album" and "she did her best with her whole heart" but what pissed me off the most was the director saying that he didn't need to research nothing because he already knew everything he needed about a topic that affects a thousands of families and making it a complete joke
As a non-native Spanish speaker, Selena Gomez’s Spanish is atrocious to me too!! She doesn’t sound like she understands anything. I also 100% agree that the choice to have her Spanish be broken was because she couldn’t grasp the language.

I’m a second generation chicana that is actually learning some Spanish because I’m at a beginner level. some people online have said that the scene with Selena Gomez which has her sing in Spanish sounded like Dothraki from game of thrones which I heavily agree on. The fact that it was horribly received in Mexico shows that this movie wasn’t made for my community.

I am not Mexican, but I have lived and worked in rural Oaxaca for many years and I take a lot a pride in having a Oaxacan accent. It is something I have worked hard at in order to better adapt to the people and culture I am living in. Zoe's accent is so much "I just learned Spanish and I'm barely trying" and Selena doesn't even try. Accents in Latin America are very specific, down to the state and region. This is just terrible.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for interviewing Mexican people. As a Mexican, I can say that I agree with everything they said. The way our culture is glazed over and they name drop some references about it. The way that it treats the very very complex topic about cartels, people who've disappeared, and LGBTQ+ rights is way beyond tone deaf. There is a nuance to this! Also, while I don't deny the effort of the actors of the film, it feels like a slap in the face that they couldn't cast a single Mexican in the leading or supporting roles. To put it in perspective, Emilia Perez is to Mexico what Emily in Paris is to France.

Not to rain on anybody's parade-specifically Zoe Saldana's-but I don't think anyone is surprised that she's involved in a movie that lacks authenticity. This is the same actress who chose to play a Blackface version of Nina Simone in a film produced by a white person. Despite Black people expressing that there were better casting options and directly voicing their concerns, she ignored them. Instead, she framed the criticism as people accusing her of not being "Black enough."
In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, she publicly expressed regret for her actions, even shedding tears, but by then, the damage had been done. People didn’t pay much attention to her portrayal, likely because it failed to do justice to the legendary Nina Simone, a singer with distinctly Afrocentric features. As an Afro-Latina with a much lighter complexion, Saldana was a poor fit for the role, and the decision to cast her felt like a disservice to Nina’s legacy.
Now, we're here again discussing a lack of authenticity-this time with Zoe working on a project with a white director that fails to reflect the people or region it's based on. This isn’t new territory; we’ve been here before.
I saw this movie because Selena was promoting it, and while I enjoyed it at the time, I have to concede the critics are right. The French director already gave me pause, but to learn he didn’t even do research into Mexico, then proceeded to make a film about a super-sensitive issue? Yikes. And while I was relieved they cast a trans actress to play Emilia, that’s the bare minimum. Hollywood needs to work harder to prioritize diversity and authenticity behind the camera and on the committees involved in awards shows and film festivals.
I'm a trans person. To some extent, I resonate with the idea of transition as rebirth, as for me, it kind of was. I came out during the first COVID lockdowns at probably the lowest pojnt in my life, and partly through transitioning, I was able to come back to myself and emerge effectively as a new person.
That being said, I'm not actually a new person. My memories of the before-times may be a bit hazy and sometimes they do feel like they happened to someone else, but the reality is that they're still all of my memories, I still hold responsibility for all of my actions, and I still act and react to things in the same ways that I did before. I'm older and wiser, more authentic and more comfortable in myself, but if I'm upset I'm still going to go to my room, put on some sad music, and then read a book. My rebirth was symbolic, rather than literal. Before transitioning, I had basically given up on life. After, I felt like my life was just beginning.
If Emilia Perez had truly wanted to commit to that theme of rebirth while still remaining authentic to the trans experience, I personally see two routes they could have taken:
1) Commit to Emilia as a hero. Seed the idea that she is deeply conflicted and unhappy with the person she has become and the harm she is causing right from the start, but feels trapped within the machismo and the nature of her position in society and sees no way out. Transition then becomes not only her way to become more authentically herself, but her way of escaping a role she never wanted in the first place - the brutal cartel leader is a mask she wore for survival. She doesn't "Mrs Doubtfire" her family beyond the initial pretence to get them to Switzerland, and instead of the conflict being around her deception, it is around whether they are able to both accept her, and forgive her past actions. Her attempts to help her past victims are more earnest, and her death at the end is due to Gustavo finding out and trying to ransom her to the cartels while Jessi tries to stop him. Emilia functions as an anti-hero, with more of an emphasis on cartels as a SYSTEM of power, exploitation, and abuse, rather than Emilia as "bad man who becomes good woman and is absolved of her sins because she's nice now (except for the part where she beats her wife, but that's because the man part of her came out again)".
OR
2) They commit to the idea of Emilia as a bad person. She doesn't wish to stop being a cartel leader, but she feels unable to transition openly without risking others seeing her as weak, and taking advantage of her incapacitated state during surgery, so she fakes her own death and re-emerges as Emilia Perez. Here, the Mrs Doubtfire plot makes more sense from a character perspective - Emilia is a deceptive person - and it's a way to directly keep an eye on the only people she truly cares about. Her attempts to help the victims are more cynical, with her seeing it as both a way to screw over the people who have moved in on her old empire, and much like the corrupt non-profit donors in 'El Mal', she sees a role as a charitable ambassador, especially with her knowledge of cartels, as a way to gain power, wealth, and influence by another route. Maybe she has some moments of genuine remorse and realisation at times, but it's unclear whether it causes her to genuinely change her worldview, and part of the tension in the latter part of the movie coming from both the audience and the characters not knowing how much of her redemption is genuine and how much is fake. Her death at the end of the movie could happen in a similar way to the actual movie, but with the eulogy explicitly framed as Rita spinning the narrative, rather than as a genuine celebration of her "fight for truth and freedom".
Obviously, these are just my basic ideas. Someone with a better knowledge of cartels, Mexican culture, and the movie as a whole, could likely do a better job. I think the first one would be better as positive representation, and could offer more room to explore the true nature of cartels through Emilia's struggle and genuine attempts to use her knowledge of how they work and the systems that support them to protect others. Her status as a martyr is earned, and while tragic, leaves the viewer with a sense of hope for the future. The latter is more of a classic thriller/character study of a deeply flawed and ruthless character, which could be some people's cup of tea, and I think that we SHOULD be able to portray complex trans villains, just as we can have movies exploring the complex cis male villains (e.g. The Godfather). However, I think it's a much harder tightrope to walk, as you risk running into all of the classic tropes of trans women as violent men at heart, and at a time when hostility towards trans women is on the rise, I think it would be slightly tone deaf to have a movie in which the trans woman is a brutal murderer who beats her wife after lying about her identity for months... oh wait. Along with being a lot darker and more of a downer, the ending, instead of being hopeful, feels like a facade. A lie told to make people feel hopeful while business continues as usual, mirroring how Emilia's switch to activism was cynical and surface level, and in reality just represented more of the same exploitation, but wrapped up in a nicer package - much like Emilia herself.
Both sounds much better than what we got lol

About Selena… Non-native speakers who speak Spanish as a second language will have an accent, and that’s normal, but Selena doesn’t even sound like a foreigner speaking Spanish. The feeling, even for those of us who speak Spanish as a second language, is that she simply memorized lines in a language that isn’t Spanish and that only makes sense to her and the French director who doesn’t speak Spanish. It seems like she doesn’t even know what she’s saying, and that makes her performance superficial and disconnected.
She doesn’t seem like a bad actress when acting in English. I felt sorry for her because someone involved in the project should have prevented her from being embarrassed like this. Her Golden Globe nomination was like … WTF??? Her performance deserves a Razzie.

Does anyone else felt creeped out about the scene where they sing about the procedures? Maybe "creeped out" is not the right phrase... The mood and tone of the song felt disturbing, off. Procedures are already scary and it felt it shouldn't be approached that way, like Manitas was doing something wrong, kind of demonising the gender-affirming surgeries or putting them in a bad light when it's the opposite. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Don't know if it makes sense...

Thank you for this spot-on commentary. I am a Mexican-American very knowledgable in film, and this movie on paper sounded like right up my alley. When the film opens and we hear "se compran colchones...", a distinctive Mexico City street sound, I felt hopeful, and that excitement quickly took a nose dive. Mexico is a perfectly criticizable nation, and we're aware of our problems. Still, we can see when a portrayal comes from a place of consciousness or a place of stereotype. I assure you, that if a European film were made about the US, using actors with Jamaican accents, no one would give it a chance. This movie has a lot of balls, and I respect that about art, but It made no effort to respect Mexico, Mexicans, and frankly the trans experience.

Very interesting to hear the discourse around this film, as I previously was unsure what it was about, but it also seemed to be sweeping the awards at the golden globes. It is a shame that the film makers couldn’t fully do justice to the groups they were basing this film off of. I don’t have a problem with the casting or creators: Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer aren’t Austrian, and Rodgers and Hammerstein aren’t either. Or where it was filmed. Lots of films are made in proxy locations. But the language/slang critique is legit. The failure to capture the cultural nuances is legit. And the mess of story/plot is a bigger problem than casting.

Between this video and the comments, it's hands down the best explanation for the problems with this film I've seen. I heard about people being upset, so I knew there was an issue. I just didn't know what exactly was infuriating (I don't have Netflix and folks online are venting more than they're explaining). I kept seeing complaints in general about how Mexico hates the movie or some folks not seeming to understand that Selena's character wouldn't sound native, but the way all of you broke down exactly what the problem is with the script and her delivery, down to the line and with social context was really incredible. It's a masterclass, honestly.

This film is like if a Mexican made a movie about the Bataclan with zero French actors, getting the information of what happened from fricking facebooks posts, writing the whole thing in Spanish and using google translate instead of a real translator.
I totally agree with Samantha, the movie has way bigger problems that Selena speaking a horrible Spanish, it looks like a mockery to México and to such a delicate theme that is the Narcotrafico and the violence that this brings, it literally feels like an insult to Mexicans
