Star Wars is one of my all-time favorite movie franchises. And since The Force Awakens was actually good, let's hope we can keep the positive streak going with the first Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. But already, one big question hangs over this movie: How are they going to explain away the fact that we haven't met any of these new characters in Star Wars Episodes 4, 5, 6 or 7?? It almost seems like Disney has written themselves into a corner with this one. BUT MAYBE these obscure characters are more familiar than we realize. Today, I'm going to show you who these rag-tag rogues really are, and in the process predict not only the ending of Rogue One, but also the events of Star Wars Episode VIII.

+Kyle did they really show everyone die? If you didn't notice, they actually didn't show a single member of Rogue One die. They were all caught in explosions, sometimes even off camera. People survived the Nuclear bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, who says Jyn and Cassian actually died on that beach? There wasn't this massive ground upheaval as you saw on Jedha.
1. Pilot Explosion off Camera.
2. Monk, hit by shrapnel from explosion by blaster bolt against console.
2. Heavy, grenade goes off, sparks/flames go across screen, then camera shows explosion with characters again off screen.
3. Jyn and Cassian, shock wave arrives, camera goes yet again off screen, so you do not see them actually getting hit by the blast.
Sure this could be censorship, but it could also be setting up for a plausible res usage of the characters.
Lets put it this way. Mobile Suit Gundam Char's CounterAttack they did something similar. The character of Char (darth vadar of the Gundam universe) was claimed as dead in the Novel version of the film. But in the TV/Film world he was officially considered MIA, missing in action. In the film they even show a con trial a glowing line of light as a machine leaves an asteroid at the end, long after everyone else left. This scene lasted a fraction of a second. It had lead many fans to believe Char Aznable was still alive. Fast Forward to 2011 Gundam Unicorn episode 2 The Red Comet is released, a man named Full Frontal is pretty much "Char Aznable." In almost every way, but name. Film staff admit "They wanted Full Frontal to have a unique origin not related to the novel." In the Novel he was a man who they implanted Char's memories, but in the film series, they never explain his origin and leave it to fans to decide. To me he lived, as one of the machines used by "His" faction used the cockpit from his machine in Char's Counter Attack, implying to me that he survived. But yet they never came out and confirmed it, it's how to make a good mystery for fans.

+marinus issue with that argument is almost none of the Novelizations of the films are accurate 100% to the films. So in a sense both the films and novels are canon for their own variation of the starwars universe. Despite how much people want to claim them as canon, even of Lucas himself said they were canon, if even one thing varies from the films, how can they be canon if the films are also canon? This is the same issue Mobile Suit Gundam has. It's such a problem that it's officially considered among fans that The Novels and TV/Films are Canon, but of their own variation or alternate reality of canon.

This lined up so perfectly other than the age. Couldn’t they have just been frozen in carbonite then freed once an acceptable leader came across. They could have been captured and frozen by Vader as they are too dangerous to let live, but could be a help. They are forgotten about until Kylo finds them. He then frees them, but spending so long in carbonate makes them forget who they are, causing them to turn to the dark side

It’s unfortunate that the Knights of Ren ended up being just as strong or important to the plot as regular Storm Troopers.

Director Gareth Edwards and writer Gary Whitta wanted to kill everyone but they thought Disney wouldn't approve so they wrote a good ending where Jyn and Cassian and a few others survive. Then in a surprise move Disney gave the green light to kill everyone.

It seems we'll never see the original cut of Rogue One. It could have confirmed this theory. Gareth Edwards says in that version the characters survived.

Be honest here, if you watched this video and saw it resembled matpat's story, would you come out of the cinema room and be satisfied of the movie? i know i wouldn't, it would just be such a stretch to say they are the knights of ren bc it would be pretty lame to see a bunch of old farts behind those suits, (but it would explain why we dont see the knights, its bc they are at the retirement home in ep7).
Watching this years later, it's ironically sad that this is an idea 1000 times better than them just all dying and the Knights of Ren being the comically incompetent fools they were.

When this movie started, it was my thought: “Everybody in this movie’s going to die, right?” It just made sense. Episodes IV and VI describe how many people died for the intel, so ….
And yeah (much like anyone associated with Jean-Baptiste Grenouille), that’s what we see: anyone who touched those plans ….. died.

Even when you see this in "pre Rouge One eyes" the timelines still don't match. The group from RO would have to be really old. Jyn Urso Is probably the youngest so that means the rest of the more older characters would be likely too old to even fight anymore. Sure you could explain it away by saving "they're all cybernetically enhanced" but that's quite a stretch for a group of random characters. This wasn't a good theory even before the movie came out.

Do we know they know that or is all of the information we get the same info the rebels have which would mean they died when really they were captured and the Empire is hiding it. I mean the Star Wars series is always from the rebels point of view and on occasion they switch to the Empire's point of view but is it possible that we are seeing it through the eyes of the rebels and their spies?

It’s 2019, the final installment came out and I watched it.
I came home and decided to rewatch this video after the movie. They never do anything with the Knights of Ren and that bothers me. The knights of Ren were as important as stormtroopers.
I wish this theory had been right.

Yeah to me, it would be darker if the empire got their dead bodies and reprogrammed them to follow their orders and doing body modifications, making them stronger than they were before.
I think there was just way too much going on for them to be able to fit in another surprise in the final instalment. Perhaps they did have this story planned out, and maybe even several other side stories, but Disney just weren't able to fit it in.
Ironic how Matt debunked the Jyn is Reys mom theory by saying she's too old, then claims that this woman (who is too old to have a 20+ year old daughter) and her much older companions become the freaking Knights of Ren? Imagine, for a moment, these 70-80 year old people doing ANYTHING the knights of Ren are depicted doing

Because it'd hardly be a stretch to say after being captured and brain washed, they could have been experimented on and had their bodies be enhanced by the Empire. Ensuring their ages wouldn't effect their capabilities as soldiers.
I mean just Look at General Grievous and Darth Vader.
It would be cool if one of the people began to think the empire was only helping the galaxy and there was an epic fight between the two lead characters over their beliefs killing each other, and then the plans finally get scent to rebellion
He hated the prequels in these older videos but little did he know that he'll grow to love them now, in specially the medyclorians.
Wow, MatPat just isn't good at Star Wars theories. Luke was not evil in Episode VII and everyone died in Rogue One.

To be fair, Luke didn't even say anything in VII. He probably got less than 60 full seconds of screen time; he could still be evil.
most of the trailers footages and monologue/dialogue were cut from the movie, I say mat theory is plausible if there were no reshoot :D

Though I guess maybe they were miraculously recovered, and the Knights' armour is similar to Vader's in terms of preserving their should-be-nonexistent lives? Then again, that would raise the question of why the Empire would save a bunch of rebels over their own allies. Like, yannow, Krennic, who, had he survived, could probably have warned the Empire about that exhaust pipe and had it safeguarded by episode IV.
Wait, did the whole planet get destroyed? I thought the Empire decided not to send the planet the way of Alderaan, and instead only blast the site the rebels were on.
The planet wasn't destroyed, but there would be no surviving the blast, in the Rogue One novel the deaths of several people in Jedha city as instantaneous vaporization, along with the fact that all but two of them were dead already.
That was an awesome explosion...
