I actually felt sorry for Imhotep at the end of the movie. He spent two movies trying to resurrect Anck-Su-Namun, the love of his life, and she abandons him when it looks like she could die trying to save him. The look on his face as he watches her run away while he begs for help is heart breaking.

The most heartbreaking villain story to be honest. My theory is that because she was reincarnated, her current counterpart didn’t have the same motivation as her past life and so she was more inclined to save herself.

"Every time they have a break, they're just like, 'suck my face.'" Which showcases one of the best things about this movie. The couple that got together in the first movie is married, has a child, is still together, and are still completely in love with one another. Love it!

This movie is pure camp, and meant to be enjoyed as such. It doesn't take itself seriously and expects the audience to do the same. It helps that it's fun and light-hearted. There's nothing wrong going back to your childhood years and letting yourself be charmed by stuff that doesn't make much sense, as long as you have a good time. That's what this franchise aimed to do, and it definitely succeeded.

The Mummy Returns was my first film in VFX production at ILM and you're absolutely right, the work was very hard, there was lots of it, and they ran out of time. Just imagine what they were trying to do in 2001 - full water simulations (with a human face shape in them!) at the same quality as Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest (or even Poseidon), complicated dynamics of sand and foliage being sucked into a single point, and of course a fully realistic cg human (albeit half scorpion). It was insanely ambitious and had some of the most talented artists & supervisors in the world working on it, but they absolutely needed more time and certainly a few more years of research and development for the physics engines. That said, really loved your positive review! I've always had fond memories of my time working on it :)

The guy who was speared when he and Jonathan were trying to hide from the pygmies was aa running gag throughout the movie. If you notice, he dodges death multiple times (when Rick throws the knife it hits the guy behind him, when they started shooting in the museum he ducks the bullets and someone else gets hit, etc), he doesn't die until it's between him and a main character.
Also, if you guys haven't yet check out Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman. It's directed by the same guy who did these movies. It has the same kind of campy action/adventure theme to it. Lots of fun.

    • @sandpiperr
      @sandpiperr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Plus I didn't agree with that criticism. The change was just enough that it came off as if she was still in kind of an awkward college student phase in the first movie, and, then 10 years later had blossomed into herself and became more confident. Which makes sense. In the time between films, she became a mother and started gaining real respect as an Egyptologist, which was rare for a woman in that time period. Both of those things would change a person!
Even the difference in combat ability kind of made sense. She'd been with Rick for 10 years, so he taught her. Plus, after their ordeal with Imhotep, it'd make sense they'd want to be the type of people who know how to fight "just incase".
In the third film though...yeah, they tried to lampshade it but it just didn't work.

CGI Dwayne Johnson with a scorpion body is iffy, for sure. They could have had him as a full human acting like the ancient Medjai. Also, I really wanted to know more about Anck-Su-Namun when I saw the first film so the sequel basically gave me more of what I loved about the first one. Instead of The Mummy 3, they could've easily slowed down The Mummy Returns and turned it into two completely separate films, calling it Part 1 and Part 2 respectively. The introduction sequence could've been extended, their exploration and discovering of the tomb where they find the bracelet could've been expanded, them returning home and relaxing could've given us some down time while the subplot is going with Imhotep being found and then transported back to London. You finish it with the finale at the museum, they escape on the bus, only for their kid to be stolen and left on a perfect cliff hanger where they figure out how they're going to track him down with the huge balloon.
It's really two films crammed into one.

Hi! I totally agree with you, I like the first one better, just because the first plot one feels a litle more natural to me, instead of the second, I always thougth they kind of "areenge the movie plot to make it work with the caracters". Also, My "litle" brother came for a visit this week and I told him about you rewatched the mummy movies, so we end up doing a "the mummy movie nigth" ... Super fun! lots of memories, impossible not to feel nostalgic, in a good way! Thank you!

I straight-up loved the first film, so when I first saw this one I was disappointed. But over time I came to appreciate it for what it was. They threw *everything* at the wall in this one, and you just have to appreciate the audacity. Plus I've always liked stories with lots of characters, and the deep multicultural casting of this film gave it a little more depth than it might otherwise have had. I think the first one is a better film, but I've actually seen this one more times because it just draws me in whenever I come across it.

hey guys! awesome reaction, I had the exact same thoughts about this movie, though I didn't really have the nostalgia factor 'cause I only watched the first one as a kid (so obviously there's a bit of a bias, but oh well); honestly though, I'd much rather have you see The Scorpion King than the third Mummy, I'd say it's better believe it or not :'D if you don't take it seriously and just enjoy the Rock killing some folks in the tune of... rock, you'll have a lot of fun! cheers

It seems like, when Stephen Sommers is given a tight-ish budget, he's at his best - The Mummy and especially Deep Rising. Otherwise you end up with Van Helsing.

Van helsing is awful but still fun. I honestly dont like the mummy returns. Its just too much. But the first mummy has become a cult classic. Sounds crazy that a movie of my generation its now a classic lol im 28 btw.

These are some purely great popcorn flicks that are undeniably fun. Not sure if it's a US / UK thing , and keep in mind I'm a huge fan of my movie buff bros across the pond, but these movies do not qualify as " Cult Classics". I think they may be better classified as movies with a cult-like following. A Cult Classic is a box office flop for the most part during it's initial release. After possibly years gaining a loyal devoted following that builds slowly over time.
These movies were a massive hit straight out the gate here in the states. I totally get the nostalgia factor for you guys. I was much older than you two when these came out, but they made just as big of an impression on me. Big fan of Jet LI , so I like the third film. After that though, I pretty much checked out. They just start to feel more like a straight up cash grab after the 3rd film. Keep up the good work on your reactions. You've got a big fan here in North Carolina and I always look forward to what's next up for you guys. Thanks

"The Scorpion King" is a standalone, as its story has nothing to do with "The Mummy" trilogy, from what I remember it deals more with The Scorpion King long before his deal with Anubis. I think you'd like it more than "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor". I don't remember liking "The Mummy Returns" as much as "The Mummy", but, I liked it far more than the third. Also, don't watch the other Scorpion King sequels, you'd be better off watching the third Mummy movie.

this movie is a fun ridiculous action movie, definitely enjoyable :) not as good as the 1st one, not as special and doesnt hit everything as perfectly but still cool :) Rachel Weisz and Patricia Velasquez are super hot here and Im in for it :D it definitely deserves praise for its action and visuals despite the ending failure with the Scorpion King for which the technology wasnt really there yet so it was a bit overly ambitious, but the ending overall was still dope :) think 6.5 is fair for this one all things considered :) I would like to see your reaction to the Scorpion King its actually quite a decent film and definitely not a bad watch :) much better than The Mummy 3 which is just abysmal :D

This was honestly one of my first introductions to the concept of "sequels suck." Like... things just... happened. You've got prophecies that make it seem like the movie is just happened. There were so many subplots and corniness that it just took me out of it and I kept waiting for the damn thing to slow down and grab on to something.
