Brendan Fraser's career crashed because he was assaulted by a producer in Hollywood and was blacklisted when he threatened to speak up about it, along with the fact that his wife divorced him and demanded a ridiculously large alimony which forced him to take a bunch of awful roles for quick money. Here's hoping that he can make a comeback, he deserves to more than most. Oh, and he's also a formidable stage actor.

From my understanding, Brendan Fraiser was more vocal about the shady sexual harassment goings on in Hollywood long before the Me Too movement picked up public awareness. As a result, he ended up blacklisted and his acting career stunted until recently with the DC Doom Patrol series.

Place names are more or less invented and all religious text would be on a papyrus scroll , only book like objects they had was wax tablets , on that you could write something and then erase it .

My interpretation of the curse... is immortality confined in a rotting body, feeling pain continuously and relentlessly through the centuries and trapped without being able to do anything, unable to pass to the afterlife. The power you gain is a side effect that is only activated if you are released by external factors (hence the constant vigilance of the medjay: they are your jailers who ensure that something like this does not happen).

I wonder why the younger generation always thinks the CGI in the 1990 is bad. It was not the stone age.
Jurassic Park 1993, Terminator 2 1991, The Mumie 1999, Young Sherlock Holmes 1985, Tron 1982, Matrix 1999, Titanic 1997, has much better believable CGI then many movies do now.
CGI was a thing before the 2000, just look at the movie "Westworld" from 1973 and "Futurworld" 1976.

The original "Mummy" was made in 1931 with Boris Karloff...I've twisted a few friends arms and made them watch it with me and they always turn to me as it ends shocked at how great it was. one friend said "it was like a dream" It begins in the 1920's with the discovery of a tomb...the flashbacks to ancient Egypt and the plot line of eternal love and reincarnation are woven into an excellent film...I recommend it highly.

If you think about it, Imphotep is a real hero in the movie:
-Got separated from the love of his life, she kills herself, he tries to bring her back and gets viciously murdered.
-Suffers from the curse, and after all those 3000 years still loves her.
-When comes back to life just tries to return his love.
-Kills basically the grave robbers who stole his organs.

    • @Keksakallu

The trick they used is called a "Texas Switch": in the same unedited shot, the stunt double performs the risky bit, and then they fall out of frame (or view, behind a large object of some sort), and the actor, who's been pre-positioned in the landing spot, pops up into frame. They do it again in the sequel, when Rick and Jonathan escape Lock-Nah's thugs in the bathroom of the Rick and Evie's mansion by jumping through the window. Brendan Fraser and John Hannah are pre-set behind a small wall, and emerge covered in prop glass after the stunt doubles have landed immediately behind them, obscured by the wall.

Even though I never really praised this film, or considered it a favorite, I've come back to this film many times. First saw it in the theatre, then bought the VHS. I think I've watched it around 8-10 times now.
To me, it has the perfect pacing and mix of an action-adventure film. Like you said, it has comedy, some family-friendly style of light-heartedness, and romance that actually works.
If I were to criticize the writing & direction, I would say that all the death and suffering are noticeably trivialized, more so than in other films.
What stands out to me are the special effects (which were amazing, especially for 1999), the characters (writing & acting), the set designs, and how well the audience was immersed into the setting.
Rachel W. was an instant hit for me too.

The way the curse on the mummy worked was that his soul would never be at rest and would never be able to enter the afterlife. That was why his face appeared in the sand after the battle. The downside was that if he was ever resurrected, then he would be an almost unstoppable being.

I didn't realize how much "Evil Dead" is in that movie. Also, I can't view this through the lens of nostalgia because I think I remember this and "Independence Day" the best from childhood. This is still a completely solid update which should have failed from being too much like Indiana Jones and not being very scary. But somehow that's helped it endure over the years so that when the Tom Cruise Mummy came out, people seemed to immediately go back to this version.

Ok So here's your answer. The Hom Dai is not just a suspension Curse, meaning Imhotep can never rest in peace, but also it's a Corruption Curse. ensuring that his soul will always be damned to the Underworld. Notice how previously, Imhotep never had the goal of world domination, Hypnotizing people, etc. In Undeath his soul was darkened and corrupted by vengeance, and even by Love. Twisted into something he never started out as. The curse comes from eternal unrest and suffering. and of course he was never supposed to come back, let alone twice. So they were hoping his memory would be lost to time and his Sarcophagus never found.

The reason they put such a curse on him is because it bars him from the afterlife, which is a huge thing in ancient Egyptian culture. To be cursed as an immortal would be the cruelest punishment, his powers are a reflection of his cursed state and the reason he shouldn't be raised, because if he is raised he would be a plague on the world, meaning the only informed option someone can make is leaving him in his undead immovable mummy form in his coffin for eternity.
