This film succeeds because it knows exactly what it is and has no pretentions about it. They wanted to make a fun, action-packed, and yes cheesy swords-and-sandles flick, and that's exactly what they did, and they did it very well.

Its fun, but what this movie did accomplice was prove the Rock's personality and charisma would translate to film. As always: finish Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy: -2) Prince of Darkness and 3) In the Mouths of Madness.

  • @kailyns8159

I love this movie. Not only is it a way better film visually than we expected, but the story is good fun, the fighting is 95% done by the actors not stunt people, it gave us a different side of Michael Clarke Duncan’s acting talents, and Kelly Hu and Dwayne Johnson have nice chemistry together without diminishing Kelly’s presence as Cassandra.
I’ve seen all the Scorpion King movies except the most recent one. They aren’t anywhere near as fun as this first one. And the stories get worse and worse. But SK2 is the biggest surprise. It’s a prequel to the prequel that basically rewrites everything....in a bad way. You’re doing yourselves a favor not reacting to them.

You should watch The One (2001), it was going to be a film starring Dwayne Johnson, but he passed it to work on The Mummy Returns so they got Jet Li to play the main character. Worked out quite well & I think it's the sort of film that would lead to a few great reactions.

"The One", a different take on the old school "The Highlander" movie franchise theme, while it's not a great movie, it is interesting in terms of the different martial art philosophies and styles, and the action is very good, albeit a bit cheesy with a bit of the choreography of the final battle, but still it's not bad
another, and much better, jet li movie: Kiss of the Dragon, probably the best jet li movie
yes, there's lots of other jet li movies, but they just weren't as impressive/good as Kiss of the Dragon and The One
(always loved jet li's style, being more serious and direct/brutal, as I hate the opposite: jackie chan's comedy style, sighs)
(jet li and tony jaa, two of my favorites, ya, there's some others too, but these just really are great)

''The Scorpion King'' is actually a fun popcorn movie, and it is way better than the awful ''Mummy'' movies by Stephen Sommers. This is directed by Chuck Russell who did ''A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors'', imo the best sequel of its franchise and the excellent remake of ''The Blob'' (1988).

So, Vince McMahon was one of the executive producers on this cuz the Rock was still under contract with the WWE at the time I think. Also since wrestling is choreographed a great deal the fighting is on point.
Also fun fact: in the fight scene with Michael Clark Duncan the Rock accidentally elbowed Duncan in the face. Duncan then pulled an awesome prank on him with the help of the makeup department. He put a bunch of makeup on his face and gauze in his mouth and then went to the Rocks trailer. Duncan told him that he was gonna have to drop out of the movie and the Rock looks so upset and sad. It’s in the behind the scenes clips

You're supposed to go: "Oh that is a nod to Indiana Jones" and so forth. It's ENTERTAINMENT through and through, and you're meant to leave the movie with a big smile on your face. Nowadays everything has to be so serious, and weigh on your heart. Even hero movies. I wish Hollywood would get back to being playful like this. ps. Also check out Michael Clarke Duncan kicking ass in this.

think this is a nice fun movie, you go into it to have some good time, its not demanding, its kinda cheesy, but its entertaining, its like your standard 6/10 movie, you will have a good time with it but you wont be blown away by it, I think they are aware of it in the movie that they arent making any sort of a masterpiece, just something simple for people to enjoy :) you have plenty to look at, The Rock is captivating as always, plus Kelly Hu will keep your attention for sure :D its the 3rd best if you would put it into The Mummy franchise, definitely better than The Mummy 3 which was just clueless :D

I don't really think of this as part of the Mummy franchise (I only saw the first one long ago) but it is one of my favorite pure action/entertainment flicks for a dreary winter afternoon. Grab some beers and snacks and queue up this and a couple other easy watching action movies and just have fun. I recommend Conan the Barbarian with Schwarzenegger, a better movie of the same genre.
