  • India's Top Economist and former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan speaks to Barkha Dutt in the 36th episode of our podcast 'Inside Out with Barkha Dutt'.
    Rajan is the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at Chicago Booth. He was the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between September 2013 and September 2016. Between 2003 and 2006, Dr. Rajan was the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund.
    Rajan speaks about being an Indian, his childhood days in Delhi, why he wanted to become a fighter pilot, his stint in the RBI, inside the Demonetisation move, whether he thought of joining politics, walking with Rahul Gandhi in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, and why he is upset with BJP's Subramaniam Swamy.
    All this and much more in this episode of Inside Out. Catch our previous episodes here: • Inside Out | A Podcast...

He had opporrunity from 2000 to 2014 as he claims he was somehow involved in advising. Now talking credit for clean up. Modi and his team were as soon as they took charge in 2014 and said in lok sabha that he had a option to bring white paper, world to know our banking status or try to live with and manage. Love how he gives credit to his team about how they went about cleaning bad loans. As the economics world mourns the passing of Prof. Solow, it is probably appropriate to focus on technology (including internet and related technologies) as the fulcrum of economic growth. In this sense Prof. Rajan’s emphasis on the service sector for India’s economic growth is right. Technological growth does not occur in a vacuum; it requires high class research departments both at universities and in the corporate sector, and an outcome based public sector. This will happen only if relentless efforts to achieve higher levels of quality is appreciated and respected in all walks of Indian life. What politicians should do is to create and solidify a structural (including legal) framework for this to happen.

    Dr. Rajan's idea is to focus on human capital. His utopian idea that industry would come naturally if we have the skilled workforce doesn't happen unless there is favorable infrastructure. Instead those skilled workforce would move out of India for the job. There will be lot of brain drain. A student will study only when there's enough employment for him in that field, He would not think that if he is skilled, new industries would come for him. While I agree that PLI is not a panacea, what is really important is good infrastructure with good governance.

    It was a pleasure as always listening to this conversation. I have one point of deviation. Can you arrange a reply from Raghuram Barkha. India needs multiple engines fired together. Let us do everything you say. But let us also not give up low skill manufacturing as you say. A large part of our work force is really not that hifi as you prescription requires. Nor do we have a great infrastructure for education. Trust me finding a good teacher is like finding an oasis! don't you see the quality of teachers who cannot do a 5th standard sum themselves teach the 5th class. Afterall, we have to put up with all kinds of clouds on merit- reservations, recommendations et al. Therefore, in the available time we should fire all engines and absorb our labour force as productively as possible. Remember for every successful Raghuram there may be lakhs or crores like me.

      It wasn’t merely an economic exercise but utilization of power to attract the name of Mr. Modi to the people at large. Could any body fail to remember his name after standing in a long cue? Modi of Gujarat became Modi of India , that is Bharat. Those in line thought that rich people who boasted of huge wealth shall be brought down to their level if black money was recovered. This was not going to happen. It did not happen but political propaganda prevailed and now he is in unimpeachable position and in the meanwhile rich became richer. If demonetisation was a successful, Modi ji would have claimed that fact in his election speeches. This test reveals that it was a disaster.

      Demonetization along with digital transactions had two main goals:
      - unearth black money and move people from cash transactions. It largely succeeded on both. Not all of the black money has been unearthed, but a good portion has
      - disrupt and stop the printing of fake currency from Pakistan and other external elements. This was a big success. Terrorist fundings were squeezed out, and Kashmir has now returned to normalcy with very little terrorists actions because they funding has stopped.
      All in all - short term pain, long term gain

    • @kameshsriram
      @kameshsriram 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      1. We don’t need demonetization to increase digital transactions. As the technology advances, people would adapt to it. The same is happening now.
      2. Fake currency problem could be addressed by gradually exchanging the currency with new currency.
      Main goal of demonetization was to remove black money. It failed horribly in its goal

    It seems like Raghuram Rajan wants to have his cake and eat it too. Is it likely that demonetization helped the growth of UPI? He is opposed to demonetization but yet wants to take the credit for the growth in UPI. There is a difference between giving an idea and getting it implemented. I'm not sure that bureaucracy by itself can change things. It needs strong leadership at the Government. Case and point, Raghuram Rajan was both in UPA and NDA govt yet there was limited things that could be done in the UPA term. I'm not saying that Raghuram Rajan's work is not credit worthy or taking anything away from his work. But to think that only he can do it and his successors can't is wrong. His point on education in Jharkhand is essentially that. If he felt so strongly about it why didn't he say or do anything about it when he was serving the 2 govt from diff parties.
