Best Peak District Walks - Finding the Hidden Bothies

  • In my latest quest to find the best Peak District walks, I go in search of a couple of remote bothies on Ronksley Moor in the dark peak. I start the walk from Howden Reservoir before making my way on to Howden Moor, over to lower small clough before spending some time looking around the 2 bothies.
    Another fab walk in a remote and quiet part of the Peak District and well worth checking out. The map is split into 2 parts as I accidentally stopped ViewRanger half way through!

      The Oyster Clough cabin is my favourite. It’s definitely a bit more luxurious than these ones on Ronksley moor, although i imagine it’s a bit basic for an overnighter 😆. Still, I suppose it offers a bit more space than a tent!

      I didn’t either until recently. They’re actually shooting cabins which are open to all. I found another one back in July on my Bleaklow video. I’m on the lookout for others now. I’m definitely going to pay another visit in winter but take a more sensible route up as crossing the Clough wasn’t the most enjoyable of experiences! Thanks as always for watching 👍

All great areas nice & remote.. If you're looking for other bothys I'll pm you on twitter a really nice one to visit.. Well done on the 100 subs too mate we'll deserved. tfs Andy.

    Good to see you found it bud ,yes where you crossed the river Derwent if you'd have took the path up the steep banking on the right hand corner you would have had a much more enjoyable walk up to the cabins ,
    The shooters cabin actually looks like it's had some sky lights put into the roof /ceiling as I'm sure when I was last there it was really dark in the back

    • @AnthonyJohnson1
      @AnthonyJohnson1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wild peak lad i realised the error when I got to the bothies that I’d missed the upper path. The river wasn’t passable at the point shown on the map and the only place I could cross was directly opposite the Clough. The walk up the Clough added to the adventure. Could have ended badly though 😆. I could have spent a good hour in there if it wasn’t for having to race the weather. Thanks for watching 👍

    Was at these cabins today Anthony. the basic one now has added benches/seats so more "lower class" walkers can shelter from the rain :)
    The luxury cabin had, bizarrely, a box of eggs left on the table. A dozen eggs - all went out of date in early October. I'm sure someone thought it was a good idea at the time...!

You can only drive up to where I parked midweek though as they close the gates at Fairholmes at weekends and on Bank Holidays. From there it’s about a 3 mile walk up to the cabins.
