It's a little weird to admit this, but as an adult the scene where Violet and Klaus have Olaf on the stand and go through all of his schemes and misdeeds from beginning to end- that scene made me cry. It felt really cathartic to see them finally able to tell their story and be believed.

when i was like 13 i had a phase where i would draw mr poe being murdered on all of my worksheets. im normal now but mr poe awakened some sort of primal beast within me
also the reason the end is so underwhelming is because the actual book (which i recommend everyone read and accept as the canon ending instead of the episode) is the largest in length, probably about double the length of the bad beginning, with many more scenes. the original book series is more like an arg, the show kind of ruined that aspect of it

@@EricCarter12You mention how it would've been cool for some dark/violent deaths in the show - in the book series, Dr. Orwell, the hypnotist, dies by stumbling backwards into a running circular saw in the mill. The one she and Olaf tried to kill Charles with - right in front of the children and everyone. But, the show changed it to a furnace because that's a little less graphic
From the perspective of an avid book fan, I loved every part of this adaptation except for a couple casting choices that I thought missed the insanity of the original illustrations. Carmelita and Esme were beyond perfect, though. This series’s quirks and failings are all an attempt to be faithful to the body of work in the Lemony Snicket books, so in their attempt to be faithful to the books they couldn’t veer off too much. The only thing I would add is showing the grown up Baudelaires, but I’m just fine imagining them myself. I’m sorry it didn’t appeal to you as much as me. It got me hyped because it was everything I wanted to see from the books themselves.

@@EricCarter12 frankly the series is designed to be disappointing and convoluted. Either you enjoy being hit repeatedly with disappointment, worst case scenarios and over the top rage inducing incompetence or you don’t. It just happens to be that way be design so it intentionally only caters to the sort of people inclined to enjoy that.
I wished also to see the Baudelaires all grown up and such, but unfortunately that never came to be in writing, so it will never be in movies also.

I was so upset when season 3 first dropped that they removed Captain Widdershins and made Fiona the captain of the submarine. I wanted his rapid-fire orders, and instead I get triangle eyes :(

I saw a behind the scenes video where Carmelita is getting into character by saying “I am cute, sweet, adorable, and amazing.” Over and over
I loved the ending, it made me cry really hard, also it was from the books so they kinda had to be faithful to the ending.

@@EricCarter12 also, I hope what I say makes you like the ending a little more, it was kinda vital that they ended up on the island. The founder of VFD was there, and they needed to reveal that, also you saying that they should not have revealed this in the final episode, it makes sense. Also you saying that this series is frustrating, well if that is the case for you, than it is working, it is pulling you in because it is supposed to be really frustrating, also we know that mr Poe would not have exited that building in time, and we both know that he died, and I feel 5/10 is a little too harsh, more like 8 or 9/10, also lemony has been trying to find them this entire season, and I love how this show didn’t have a massive ending, but a self contained one. Also this is my most rewatched season. Ever, I finished this whole thing by 8:00 am when it came out at midnight, and you saying what happened to the quagmires, THEY … they showed what happened, and you even mentioned the answer, and this show is supposed to leave you wondering, and I love that is barely shows what happened to the people in the building, it is supposed to leave suspense. Also you saying it is a mess on episode 7, but you also saying that you want them to focus less on the baudlares, don’t know if I spelled it correctly, I think you needed to binge it in a day so you would get the full picture, but a year, it would not work if you watched it in more than a year, rewatch the whole thing at once, multiple times and you will get the full picture, and all the answers.
To answer some of your questions:
1. The end is meant to be open-ended and is left even more so in the books. Mr. Poe and everyone in the hotel are presumed to have died in the fire, though.
2. Everyone wanted the sugar bowl for power. Having the cure means you can control the poison and protect yourself and whoever you want. The reason that Fernald burnt down the laboratory was to stop the experimentation with the poisonous mushrooms. So, there was a huge risk of using the poison against enemies or the mushrooms spreading instead of staying in the enclosed grotto. The adults in VFD were arguing over what to do with the cure, distribute it as needed or keep it for themselves, which is how the schism started and why the sugar bowl is such an important part of the story. This was all in the series, but it could easily be missed by a first-time viewer.
3. Lemony Snicket can still narrate the story from the future because he is saying what Beatrice told him at the beginning of the season. Beatrice was presumably told the story by the Baudelaires themselves and went to tell Snicket what happened after Snicket's trail went cold. There is no way that Snicket could have found them on that island. Instead, there is a 10-year time skip between Lemony Snicket's storyline between the second and third seasons where the narration of the third comes when Beatrice is old enough to find Snicket (10 years old).
4. They couldn't take the helmet off of Sunny because they could become infected too. Hence, the reason they sealed it with gum, wore handkerchiefs around their mouths and noses, and the spores infect everyone in the end. Even Sunny's breath could have infected them, and they couldn't run the risk of everyone else on the submarine getting infected because the spores exhaled by the infected would lead to everyone on the submarine, including Klaus and Violet being infected.
Also, the majority of your criticism completely misses the point of the series: the adults (with a few notable exceptions) are blind to the world around them and stupid (thus the blindfolds). Despite the children being right time and time again, the adults will never learn because they do not listen to the children. Hence, the reason that the show is so repetitive, especially at the beginning. Those who cannot learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Finally, the show and books are mainly made for children which is the reason for Lemony Snicket's frequent grammar lessons. Reading these books in fourth grade made me the grammar nerd I am today. If you have any other questions about the series, these books were some of the defining moments of my childhood, I've seen the show many times for the nostalgia. Ask away!
Honestly, though, season 3 is my least favorite. It's the season that strayed away from the books the most, and I never really enjoyed the last few books very much. Lemony Snicket literally warns us time and time again, but I always want a happy ending anyway. Plus, I love the Quagmires so much and am so sad that they weren't in the last few episodes/books.

I was never really a fan of the TV series but since I grew up with the books I decided to stick it out.
And yeah, the show really heightens all the bad aspects of the books.
Then adding to it with all the bad effects, acting and Mr Poe.
Somehow the last books adaption (The End) actually gives you a lot more of a conclusion than the book does, even if they fall flat, at least we're given more answers here.
There was a book called The Beatrice Letters, that was a series of letters between Lemony and both Beatrice's (Baudelaire's mother and Kit's daughter) that I guess is where they drew the inspiration for the very end with the younger meeting Lemony.
Really? Wow. I thought the show gave the exact same answers as the book. But the book actually gave LESS answers.
How did you feel when reading the final book? Did you like the small number of answers or was it disappointing?
@@EricCarter12 Personally, I didn’t mind. And the author has said that he frequently receives letters from people saying they worked it out and that, if he hadn’t, he’d be worried he hadn’t done the story properly.

the thing about all the characters from the show not having an ending - it’s meant to be implied that at least most of them were killed in the hotel fire (so we can also assume mr. poe died).
We can always hope.
While it's ambiguous in the book, the show confirmed that Justice Strauss survived, and she was right on the top floor, which gives the other characters more hope. In general, the series has a much more optimistic ending than the books do.
Mr Poe, Nero, Carmelita and Esme all die in the fire so it should have gotten those extra points!

I feel like you deeply misunderstood the very nature of the story. The show literally warned you at the very beginning that it was going to be a Very Fatal and Dreadful story. Did you *actually* expect it to end all neatly and satifyingly ?
Also I think having literal years between watching each episode/season did not help, as there are multiple elements you claimed were "unsolved" or "pointless" yet they actually were explained. Even Ishmael and the Medusoid Mycelium are foreshadowed multiple times throughout the story, a term that here means "subtly hinted at in a way that retro-actively makes it relevant."

I do think we have to remember that these are based on books. They can't just change massive details, especially the ending.
So this series of unfortunate events is caused by the mistakes of many characters, including the Baudelaires. (And, for the show, the creators)

After watching your review I’d have to say a few things.
Number one: do you not understand how poisonous mushroom spores work?
Number two: complaining about how unbelievable the scenario is in an absurdist melodrama that was adapted from a book series for children is rather odd. It really seems like you went into this show expecting it to be something it never presented itself as, that’s not the shows fault.
Number three: saying that because your siblings also weren’t that into it meant that it definitely was something the show did and not just how it landed on you personally is ridiculous. Your siblings, being your siblings, probably have similar tastes as yours, a sample size of three or so isn’t an accurate representation. Just because the show didn’t land on you and your siblings doesn’t make it the shows fault, again to my earlier point, you went in expecting this show to be something it never presented itself as.
While I do agree with a lot of what you said, about how sometimes they went to hard with being faithful and forgot to utilize the medium of television, ultimately a lot of your opinions stem from the fact that you were being expecting a much more grounded thriller aimed at 20-30 somethings, rather than the absurdist fantasy for 12-15 year olds that it was always meant to be. You held it up to a false criteria and missed like 90% of the point of the show and what makes it so great.
You can’t watch a football game and complain when the dude kicks the ball through the posts because that’s not the rules of basketball, which is effectively what most of your complaints are:
“This isn’t what I wanted it to be, despite it saying at every turn what it is”

You should watch gravity falls if you want to see a kids tv show with an amazing ending that pays off. It’s also really funny and is entertaining. But if you’ve Already seen it then what do you think. If you haven’t seen it then it would be great if you did a binge watch video on it if you want.
although I like this season more then You did I only gave it a 6/10 and yes they should have shown Mr,Poe's death like have him say he has ruined the kids lives by doing things the way he did and that he will not make the same mistake again so gets in between Olaf and the kids and doesn't let Olaf pass Olaf then grabs Poe and snaps his neck saying that Poe was useful but dumb before now is being only dumb

It's likely that Mr Poe did die in the TV fire. He was with the principal when the hotel was on fire, the principal said 'I'm such a genius, I know where the exit is' but since he's too stupid and blindfolded it's likely that they aimlessly wandered around. But in the books, it's mentioned that he did survive the fire(where his last words were about the orphans' security and custody) but died from a harpoon gun after the series. I'm surprised you didn't spare a couple of seconds for the elevator scene. As a book reader myself, I did struggle to like season 3, it was so mixed, but there were a lot of changes from the book like the trial scene and a planned mutiny on the island.

P.S. At 58:52, you mentioned how the show, especially its final season, feels like it has done something wrong. Well, in the intro of the first episode of the season three, Count Olaf sings, "Anyone still watching this has clearly lost all reason."

@@EricCarter12 Also, from someone who was a massive fan of the books, this season was a huge letdown.
The only thing I kinda liked was the reveal of what was in the sugar bowl. The Medusiod Mycelium was absolutely fucked up in the books, being so much more powerful than they had it in the show. So having something that completely immunized you to it’s effects could make you an incredibly dangerous person, bringing over this fast working fungus that can kill people from a single spore. Other than that, I hated what this season did.
