    Your completely missing the reason why the adults are portrayed as stupid. Their stupidity is meant to invoke the frustration that children feel when adults don’t listen to them and that is a running theme throughout the series. It is very well done as it makes it obvious enough that viewers such as yourself find the frustration and annoyance that you described in their behavior.
    That is also why the children in the carnival, along with every other child in the series, is portrayed as extremely intelligent and capable. That’s the whole point!

    • @upfrontplace0926
      @upfrontplace0926 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      And also the fact that it's a children's novel but I can see where he's coming from. They're times that I straight up don't believe the fact that the adults are this stupid but that's just me.

    • @stiletteleray1326
      @stiletteleray1326 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I would argue that is not the base point, the point is that anyone with a pure moral code can see how nearly every human in society just goes with the flow and pretends like wealthy people having 10 meals while children starve is ridiculous. You wanna be annoyed? Look at the world with honesty. It’s annoying.

    • @Grandmaster_Dragonborn
      @Grandmaster_Dragonborn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That being the point does not excuse blatantly flawed storytelling; that excuse was fine for the first season but the utter absurdity of this season makes it non valid.
      It's utterly ridiculous storytelling.

This is crucial to the development and understanding of the story. And it was beautifully, brilliantly executed in screen.

    The whole point is that it's absurd, especially the adults, otherwise what would be the point of the children having to adapt and mature?
    The "good guy" organization are a cult of bookish elitists obsessed with codes.
    And if you've ever worked a minimum wage job, most of these adults would be little different from middle management anyway.
    And complaining about Mr. Poe and the kids getting a new guardian and Olaf's disguise...that's like complaining about Harry Potter always getting stuck with The Dursleys, taking a train to Hogwarts, getting into a spat with Malfoy and Snape, getting a diofferent Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher each year,catching the snitch, and defeating Voldemort's plan at the end.

    1. The show is a SATIRE. It is ABSURD in purpose. It IS supposed to portray the adults stupidly. It’s not supposed to be realistic nor believable at all. It’s showing everything wrong with human beings at its highest point.
    2. Lemony interrupting the story is important for understanding him as a character. The fact that he’s annoying by doing so, is also on purpose. Lemony is annoying. It’s one of the reasons he’s lost everything. And the “show don’t tell” doesn’t work here. Lemony’s comments are made to enhance his messing with language and words humor. Elements that are VITAL to the VFD philosophical principles.
    3. Stop trying to make sense of the show by applying normal or standard rules. The show is not set in that world. It’s not set in a fantasy world either.
    4. Pay more attention to the details. It’s in them that the story is really operating.

      @@minaexists1288 Yes, but if he wasn't portrayed like that from the very beginning, the reveal of his "real" participation in the story wouldn't be as strong.
      Also: the writers know it is annoying that he interrupts the story. They're making him interrupt so often, because it's supposed to drive the audience angry, eager to know the rest of the story.

    You really should read the books. Some of your complaints make a bit more sense there. Like Count Olaf insisting on getting the Baudelaire’s fortune even though he has Esmé, because at this point it’s not about the fortune. I really enjoyed the series so far, and because I’d never heard of it before, I just read the whole series and absolutely loved it. To me, the adults’ stupidity wasn’t an issue, but something I got along with as part of the storytelling. I think you did a great review (this series is not that famous around youtube and it’s hard to find reviews as detailed as this), although I think you missed some of the points of the story. I think you will enjoy season 3.
    It may not be related but I just want to get it out of my chest: I loved the hospital book, and episode. The scene where Esmé hunts down the kids at the library of records was amazing, she looked really evil, insane and scary.

    Also Olaf:
    Beats his former best friend to death with a crowbar and frames a few kids for it
    Burns down a Hospital
    Puts a teenager under anesthesia forcefully for surgery and tries to force her brother to cut of her head
    Throws a librarian to a pack of starving lions
    Forces a few kids who’s life was ruined by a fire to light a fire
    Drops a couple kids off of a mountain
    It was a calm before the storm. The adults are also supposed to be stupid, Olafs plans aren’t even that smart. Your remark at 28:05 is how we’re supposed to feel.

    two very big plot points in this story are how all the adults are incompetent while the children are smart, and that this story will *never* have a happy ending. i cant remember much about how the show portrays the latter, but i remember that in the books it constantly shoves the idea of this story not having a happy ending down your throat. after all, it is called 'a series of unfortunate events' for a reason. and the adults being idiots is meant to give you the same frustration that children have towards adults not taking them seriously. this story is written for children/teens, so this idea makes sense

    My only criticism is that most of the stuff you complain about is a bunch of metaphores. You might find it annoying but it actually does have a purpose despite that. The never recognizing the disguises represents the adults who dont question authority.

      I hope season 3 will be a lightbulb moment for him! I know it’s hard to grasp the dark reality this show highlights but society is gross and hypocritical. They only seem far fetched because we are viewing the story from the outside, when you place those metaphors into reality it can take a toll on you and realize how lenient adults have to let there morals be to survive in this money-loving, social norms world we have created.

  • @erincorcoran5936
    @erincorcoran5936 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Everyone in the comments is getting annoyed because he hasn't read the books. But the thing is, you shouldn't have had to read the books also to enjoy the show. From a review standpoint you shouldn't need that extra context and nuance if the show can't deliver it on it's own. This is a review of the show, things that people know from the books do not matter until they are presented in the show, and if they are done badly, then it's unfortunate, but still bad. Yes, it's meant to be ridiculous and absurd, that's the point. But that doesn't mean just because you understand WHY something is happening, that you have to enjoy seeing it happen. It's a REVIEW. That means it's an opinion. And if that's the opinion of someone who didn't grow up with the books, and is percieving the story based SOLELY on the show, then that's an entirely valid perspective of the story as it stands on it's own, don't you think?

    Also, in the first episode of The Hostile Hospital, Olaf found the Baudelaires because probably their fire engine was parked outside, or since it was the only shop in miles, Olaf assumed the Baudelaires would stop for rations.

    The Ersatz Elevator was one of my favorite episodes, and that whole Cafe Salmonella sequence with the 46-course lunch was comedy GOLD, especially Olaf gagging at the gluttinous stuff pouring from the salmon pitcher, tho i think they could've handled the Baudelaire's reunion with the Quagmires a little better. In the book, all of them are crying and laughing, trying to hug each other through the bars, they're so relieved to see each other, but it doesn't feel as emotional or touching in the series

    Well, there’s a few reasons why Olaf doesn’t just marry Esme. For one, he’s obsessed with revenge or something, and he just wants to hurt the Baudelaires specifically. Secondly, Esme’s also on the run from the Law, so it’s unlikely she’s going to have access to her fortune. Though, given how stupid all of these people are, she could just say she was kidnapped while Olaf puts a book on top of his head for a new disguise as her Lawyer or something.
