We now have a 2018 Hyundai Kona and couldn't be happier with it. The 1.6 turbo charged motor really does separate from the other 1.6 motors without turbo. As expected, it does not produce a floating smooth ride as one gets in a larger car. At the same time, I found it to be a bit firmer that similar small crossover SUVs. The seven speed duel semi automatic/standard tranny is a blast. It sort makes the old geezer wish he was younger and could install pipes in the exhaust. The rest: the vast array of modern electronics in this vehicle takes time to learn, and at times, a co- driver is needed to operate everything when driving at highway speeds. Out of 1 - 10 , I will give the Hyundai 2018 1.6 Turbo, 9.0 to 9.5.
This video has the best editing I have seen in a car review. Whoever is responsible should get a raise. The Kona looks like a nice SUV/crossover/whatever, and the looks do not polarize me. It looks like a friendly happy beast, not an ugly mean unhappy beast as produced by the mentally questionable design crew at Toyota.
When I heard Micah's voice, it was almost as if a million voices cried out in relief. So glad to see you back doing reviews Micah! Wouldn't want a Cooley to happen to Kelley Blue Book :)
Amen! There are a few reviewers that I'll watch whatever they produce, it doesn't matter if I am interested. KBB, Cooley (even his filler videos) and Tom from Driven to name a few. Difference is with KBB, when they have different hosts they actually are good. When other channels try they lose me.
I purchased my Hyundai Kona Ultimate Ironman Edition a few days ago and I am in love with it. It is a fairly comfy ride and the seats are comfy. My only complaints are about the trunk space. I have to fold down the rear seats to fit my grandma's walker, which I didn't have to do with my 2013 Elantra. Also, the trunk is a manual lift instead of an auto lift. Other than that, I love it. It drives smooth, turns smooth, and the sport mode makes it fun to zip around in!
I bought the green Kona, it came with matching green trim and seatbelts, I work with kids with special needs.... they all said the car looks pretty. Even my wife who said prince Charles is a handsome man, loves the look of the car. I'm so happy, I think I might buy a big Hyundai sticker to put on the back window :D
My Nana has a 2019 Kona SE and we absolutely love it I drive it once in a while and it’s so smooth and for a base model it’s got a big screen, backup camera, Apple CarPlay and android auto, lane assist, and forward collision warning which is insane to me how far Hyundai has come I personally have a 2006 Tucson and I absolutely love it but you can see a big difference from old to new Hyundai
i love your review man, clear, straight to the point and damn, I really love the camera work, it's among the best I've seen in a review in a while. keep it up! and oh, i love the green and the cladding :D
This car will never require the AWD option. It's a good city car for bumpy roads, smaller parallel parking spots and grocery runs. The spec difference between base and ultimate might look like a steep price (from 18 to 27k) but I see a lot of these sell for 5-6k less than MSRP. So at the end of the day the base model is almost not worth it, especially at MSRP price. Get the 175hp and it's a great city choice.
Finally, a good looking reviewer and it's great cause, now there are 2 eye candies on this review, the reviewer and the vehicle. I can't wait to buy one of these 2018-2019 Hyundai Kona in Lime Twist and the 1.6T AWD.
Great review. One thing I would like to recommend all car reviewers add to their analysis is, what type of fuel does the vehicle take? 89-93 octane? That also has a big influence on which vehicles I consider for purchase and I think would be helpful for other viewers. Thanks!
After driving AWD Subarus from 1981 to 2013, then Hyundai Elantras since, I'm ready for my 2019 Kona Limited FWD this fall! So far, I've seen NONE on the road and I'm the type of person that would like the attention of a new vehicle that nobody on my block or at work has seen before!
My Nana has always loved Hyundai she had a 2011 Accent, 2018 Accent, and now has a 2019 Kona and we absolutely love it she wanted a slightly bigger car that’s more up higher then her Accent and it was a perfect Upgrade and I love how it drives and she has a base model and she has a big touch screen with Apple CarPlay and android auto lane assist and forward collision warning so your not missing much with the base SE
It is fascinating that modern mid-size sedans have lots of rear leg room with no rear headroom while this class of CUV has ample headroom but no leg room.
Not really... just about any crossover is taller than a midsized sedan, but noticeably shorter.... weird that the outer dimensions are reflected by the inside space available.
Was looking for this before deciding to buy one a few weeks ago. The 2.0l trim in my country got de-accessorized so much. No sensors, no infotainment screen, no camera, no high tech safety features. At least it has push to start and keyless entry. The price ultimately became the deciding factor.
SOOOOO true! I'm driving a base model Kona right now, and none of what's said in this review applies to the SE. I've tried and tried to come up with something nice to say about this car, but I just can't. If you're gonna get a Kona, make sure you can afford one of the upper trim levels.
It has Cruise Control, it just doesn't have "Adaptive Cruise Control"... It's essentially where you set your CC for say 55mph, & then the car uses it's built in radar to monitor other cars in front of you to adjust your speed with the flow of traffic. It's a pretty common option on cars nowadays, especially one that has so many other "radar based gizmos" like Lane Keep Assist, & Blind Spot Warning. They all use similar tech, so it's strange that it's not even offered.
Very similar to i20 active sold here in India. Very much of the interior design and quality is similar( except the infotainment). Bumpy ride but very easy ti drive in the city bcoz of the steering.
A few weird things - there is no blinking red led light to indicate the alarm system is engaged when you park the car - the optional heads up display is poor and turns off every time you park the car. The display is tiny and not worth - you cannot set the vents to center and windshield at same time. the vents are also too close to the body, always feel them even at the lowest setting - for some reason, all doors and the hood must be slammed quite hard to close them on this car - very little feet room under the front seats, for the rear passengers with the leather seats - the cables and hoses for the cooled seats are located very close to the floor, behind the seat. However knee space is good for rear passengers, unless the driver is very tall and the person sitting behind him is tall as well. But for children there is no problem - the trunk area is definitely on the small side - fabric seats comfort is marginal, leather seats have good comfort - only the higher trim offer display with GPS - no spare tire and no jack in the EV. only a useless tire repair kit without jack. - door panel rest is soft padded and nice, however the center arm rest padding is very stiff, feels like hard plastic - the stitches on the leather steering wheel are very protruding and uncomfortable on the hands - the glove box sits very low on this car, front passenger leg room feels tight, the glove box opens directly on his knees - terrible rear left side blind angle for the driver, almost no view when switching lines to the left or engaging on the highway - the underneath of the Kona EV is very low to the ground - the battery shield is really close to the road - all parking sensors are extremely exposed to the smallest impact on the bumper covers - such as in a parking lot. The slightest impact will damage these sensors. On the Kona EV, the charging port is directly exposed to any front end damage, very costly fix. On the Hyundai Ioniq this port is even more exposed, poor choice from Hyundai - some Kona EV had problems with the 12v battery at very low miles, strangely the battery drains quickly wen the ignition is at ON without the electric engine being started. The car will give a low 12v battery warning even after only a few minutes with the ignition ON and the motor off. When the 12v battery goes flat (or bad) you are left stranded and the door must be opened with the mechanical key (inside the key fob). It is a good idea to keep a battery charger and to regularly check the health of the 12v battery - on models equipped with blind spot assist, the radar sensors go regularly bad on all cars - these are extremely expensive to replace at $500 each, most times the sensor just slight moves on its bracket causing the calibration to go off - regardless of what Hyundai owners try to make you think, Hyundai cars do have problems even at low miles, mostly with sensors (not to mention the widespread gasoline engines mechanical problems from 2016-2019). Be sure to purchase an extended warranty And a few positives - nice high sitting seats, minivan like. Seat comfort is not the best, but good leg and headroom for tall drivers - easy entry for both front and rear passengers - very good driving position with the steering wheel at the right place. Excellent steering wheel thickness - nice steering/handling feeling. The steering is on the heavy side, with a nice tight feeling to it - very comfortable and bumps absorbing suspension on the Kona EV. Comfortable highway ride - it has been told the Kona is noisy on the highway. I think it's exaggerated. You can hear tire noise and it's certainly lacking wheel arch insulation - can easily be fixed but this is not meant to be Lexus quiet - very nice center console with D P and R buttons instead of gear selector knob - the interior panels are mostly plastic but well put together and solid. The only strange hard plastic is on the lower window frame, however the window frame is too high to rest your arm (hag out your arm) so most surely no one will be driving like this - cabin interior is very nicely designed and looking, with the exception of the center vents which are very low and close to the front persons
Nice car, but I'll stick with my 2015 Kia Soul for now. LOADS more room in a similarly sized car. The back seats, especially, are far more roomy, and the styling is aggressive without needing that plastic cladding. Speaking of the back seats, I am 6'1", and have my front seat fairly far back from the steering wheel. I get in back behind the drivers seat, and I have almost 3 inches of clearance between my knees and the back of the front seat! And the back seats are very comfortable! The Kia Soul is by far the better choice in this segment over all the cars he mentioned, including the Kona!
Depends on you're situation, I buy what I LIKE THE BEST, not, how comfortable will the person be back there , couple times a year. Front seats can be moved up a few clicks to increase rear room, without causing issues for people in the front. However, if you're always having family in the backseat, then that's definitely a different situation.
Poorly made, ugly, no power, used to see them frequently a few years ago, never see them anymore. Must have all gone to junkyard around 10 years old or less.
Still love the Kona. For its price it’s a great buy w a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. Also cheap cars are not gonna feel like a Maserati or Lamborghini. Plastic, wind noise, and bumpy ride quality from time to time is expected so keep the expectations realistic.
what do you think of the green one? i like the blue too but the interior is so dull ( it has to be all grey if you get the blue one, they dont have blue details interior... )
Micah, always enjoy your reviews. Informative, but enjoyably irreverent. Love the rolling footage through Long Beach, I miss my old hometown. Hey, one question, where do you get all of the cool automotive novelty T-shirts? Thanks! 🌴🌵🌴🌵🌴🌵
MrMentalSoul The DRLS in the 2019 redesign are actually still above the headlights, but it's harder to tell since they placed all of the lighting in one compartment and the fact that most drivers only see the front part of the DRLs and not the side.
Yeah, how easy it is to replace the light bulbs when they goes out? I surely hope you don't have to tear the bumper apart to just change a burns out bulbs?
Good thing for the all the safety tech, since a small impact to front or rear will bust your lights. Stupid placement of lighting, but not a bad package, overall.
Call me weird but I have driven those luxury vehicles that have whatever noise dampening feature so you don't hear anything outside and I find that personally irritating. I actually like hearing the wind noise as I drive. Most times when I can I drive with the windows open as part of that reason. So whenever I hear that a car has an ultra-quiet interior, It's automatically off my consideration list for purchase.
Hey Mica, according to the Centers for Disease Control, the average U.S. male is 5'-9" and 195 pounds, so you're not "supremely average," you're "supremely above average!"
Way to piss on a complement to our host Mica! Besides, height & weight aren't everything. Funny, I'm 5'9", 180 lbs, and I've never been called short & fat. In fact, people say I'm quite fit, low cholesterol, low bp, full flat top hair in my late 40s. I've been this way since college.
@@cadsux well, I wouldn't want to be short, not that your too short, but at a little over 6ft 1, 195 pounds, I feel perfect. But I do get asked in the grocery store by ladies to get those items way back on the top shelf!!
I own a 2017 Elantra. They have a 2.0 Atkinson cycle variant of the Nu engine. I would stay away. Mine, and according to many reports the dealer told me they get, is they make a loud ticking/tapping noise when cold. It sounds like a diesel. Dealer reported Hyundai said it was normal because the metal shrinks in cold weather. I have never ever had a car do this in cold weather and I have had my fair share of bombs. I bought it used so am only covered up to 60000 miles. I said to Hyundai ok if this is so normal cover my car to the full 10 year 100000 mile warranty. They just keep giving me the run around. I mean if there is no issue with the car it would not cost them anything to give the full powertrain warranty. I have no confidence in the longevity of this engine and unfortunately it looks like they are putting these in more models like the Kona. Also I think these engines are in the Kia Forte and other Kia models.
I love the plastic interior I hope they keep it like that , u can make a lot of sculpture design with that plastic just like their old sonata ,Elantra .unlike the leather wood ,u can’t make good youthful interiors with it.
That's the used car buyer's problem. Not the original owners. However there's lots of 10 year old vehicles with this type of plastic armor, and to my eyes. Still looks fine.
What would the body cladding need to look like, so it DOESN'T look like that?? And still go around the wheel arches?? Lots of manufacturers are doing this. As a person who was an adult when the AZTEC Came out, I dont see the connection.
I own a a 2019 Kona SLE Tech package I have 1900 miles on it and I can't drive it the blind spot indicator goes out on the highway shut the cameras off blind spot off they have no fixed for it it's still sitting at the shop at the Hyundai shop there's no fix I'm waiting for a litigation to happen I'm really mad
No matter how much you spend, you still end up with a Hyundai. Build quality, finish quality and resale regardless the warranty makes it a poor buying decision.
lol are you from 10 years ago? Go check JD power initial and long term quality ranks. Hyundai beats even Toyota nowadays. Consumer reports and IIHS says the same thing. They've grown to be a proper car maker
We felt the same way about Honda and TOYOTA in the late 60s thru the early 80s. Then realized, they had become very good automobile manufacturers. Of course no matter how good of a car they made, some would still say, nope nope, still crap. That's you, Hyundai has been making very good vehicles for a little over 10 years now. Yes, there's been some issues and a few setbacks, but that's absolutely true of every automobile manufacturer. Right now, honda has a serious problem with oil dilution issues with some of their engines...its an even bigger PR PROBLEM, as anyone who knows anything about engines, will not buy one that's setup for early failure.
We now have a 2018 Hyundai Kona and couldn't be happier with it. The 1.6 turbo charged motor really does separate from the other 1.6 motors without turbo. Toyota has good designs dude... so does hyundai...
I've had my Kona SEL for three months and love everything about it!
When I heard Micah's voice, it was almost as if a million voices cried out in relief. So glad to see you back doing reviews Micah! Wouldn't want a Cooley to happen to Kelley Blue Book :)

I love what Hyundai has been doing! The Kona proves they have come a long way since the Excel!
Pleasant review. Great personalities, great humor, and great camera work keeps me watching these!
Thanks so much for your support! Glad you enjoy our channel. 😁
Micah always does an awesome job. I wouldn't mind buying one of these now.
That green color looks nice!

This car will never require the AWD option. It's a good city car for bumpy roads, smaller parallel parking spots and grocery runs. The spec difference between base and ultimate might look like a steep price (from 18 to 27k) but I see a lot of these sell for 5-6k less than MSRP. For Snowy states AWD would be useful.

Guess we gotta get use to Hyundai putting their headlights below the LED DRLs such as they are doing with the new Santa Fe
Miguel Ircontar FCA has been doing that since 2014 with the jeep Cherokee. I think it looks awesome, especially on this Kona.

MrMentalSoul The DRLS in the 2019 redesign are actually still above the headlights, but it's harder to tell since they placed all of the lighting in one compartment and the fact that most drivers only see the front part of the DRLs and not the side.

Hi Garner! We've got a sneak peek of the 2019 Sante Fe here: th-cam.com/video/nDYmuyQ56OE/w-d-xo.html
lol I agree, you can get so much more car if you're OK with it being used.
Good thing for the all the safety tech, since a small impact to front or rear will bust your lights. Stupid placement of lighting, but not a bad package, overall.
Love my Kona !
I have one and love it!
Proportions are similar to a GLA, I think
HUNDAI KONA AND KIA NIRO IS JUST ONE PLATFORM.. THEY JUST DIFFER IN BODY STYLE IN AND OUT.. SAME ENGINE, SAME TRANSMISSION, AND UNDERBODY PARTS..
Nice looking ride!
Third Man Records 🤘🏻👍🏻
If you looking for a kona just go for the kona ev
Subcompact looks with body cladding :( still waiting for a more upscale and adult looking subcompact suv. Maybe from VW?
Hey Mica, according to the Centers for Disease Control, the average U.S. male is 5'-9" and 195 pounds, so you're not "supremely average," you're "supremely above average!"
5'9 195 lbs is short and fat lol. But that's probably about right for average American. 5'9 should be somewhere around 155-170lbs
When we will get "In memoriam 2018"?
I love the plastic interior I hope they keep it like that , u can make a lot of sculpture design with that plastic just like their old sonata ,Elantra .unlike the leather wood ,u can’t make good youthful interiors with it.
In Australia, we can get the CH-R with AWD.
Really?
I love my Nana’s 2019 Kona
Curious, what city are your reviews filmed in? your near the coast
What about the Ford Ecosport?
I love my kona!!
imagine what that exterior plastic is gonna look like in 10 years
That's the used car buyer's problem. Not the original owners. However there's lots of 10 year old vehicles with this type of plastic armor, and to my eyes. Still looks fine.
I found the plastic armrests are really uncomfortable.
Why no one is mentioning the Ford Eco sport Too here?
"a locking center differential" riiiight.
Body Cladding looks like they ripped them straight off of a Pontiac Aztec
Not true...
@Lincoln Guy well their cars look good if they're ripping each other off...
Was it solved?
Right now, honda has a serious problem with oil dilution issues with some of their engines...its an even bigger PR PROBLEM, as anyone who knows anything about engines, will not buy one that's setup for early failure.
hmm... you should read up on some of the issues Honda and Toyota are having, Subaru isn't invincible either. ;)
kbb lets double micah bonus ayt?
Looks good
Make a review on Buick encore
I miss Zach, Micah :(
And you better not switch to another channel!
Viewability?
That "only dirt hill track within 20 miles.." is EXACTLY how ALL THE FREAKING ROADS in my country look like! #DearLord!!! Lol
Good car, good music!

I bet yellow would look really good on this car
Car of the year
That’s a Subcompact Crossover not a SUV.. SUV’s are Ford Explores, Tahoe’s, 4 Runners.. etc..
Dear Micah,I am watching this review for you not for the car.
I think I might be too tall for this vehicle. Im 6’1 and my kids are getting there too.
Vs CX3?
