  • Why Does My Cat Grab and Bite my Ankles? | Furry Feline Facts
You know the routine; you’re minding your own business, probably settled in bed when suddenly, out of nowhere, you’re attacked!
Your ten pound-something cat pounced on top of your feet as if you two were playing a chasing game you didn’t know you were a part of-- a game that you don’t want to be a part of.
Almost every cat owner has experienced that panic when that little furball grabs your ankles as you walk past an ambush-- or in extreme cases, actually attacks them, scratching and biting.
Why do they do that? Why do cats insist on playing this strange game that only seems amusing to them?
All of that will be discussed, along with the magical solution to having your kitty leave your ankle in peace and how to stop cat from biting.

My mum's kitten used to hide behind the door and pounce on my mum's legs. She even worked out that she only got a reaction from mums left leg, as mum had an artificial leg on the right. Luckily she outgrew this behaviour once she could go outside

My Maincoon and Siamese growing up did this once in a while. Never wanted to hurt my sisters or myself. We got to the point that when either would bare their teeth a bit, we backed off, and they would be just as happy as can be. I learned from experience how to handle Muffin and Puff early on. They were real great brother and sister to me, and a great addition to our family.

I watched an episode of "My Cat From Hell" where Jackson Galaxy said its because they wanted/needed to play more. If you don't release their pent up energy they will see you as a target for hunt and attack you instead.
My neighbor has a 8 month old dilute calico and she has been biting and scratching me a lot whenever I pet her. She only bit and attacked my ankle one time, but one time was all I needed to know that she probably doesn't get enough play time. I let her play with my cat toy. I don't know if it releases enough of her energy or not but I'll see. I just want her to stop biting my hand when I pet her and to not attack my ankle anymore. I have stopped petting her as frequently anymore whenever we're just sitting around. I only pet her if she is eating or if it's just going to be a quick pet because I know she'll bite and scratch me. I don't want her to associate my hand with a Prey/biting toy.

I have a lovely "..lol" herd of wild barn cats. They get fed in the a m. and I pick up their food before I go to bed. I have put a ton of cat toys outside in their cat sanctuary, they get a lot of miles out of the hanging elastic mouse toys. All day, all night, they chase snacks and each other, but no amount of the wild life keeps them from chasing my feet and biting my ankles anytime I'm out among them. They love me for caring for them. It's really that simple.

I love when my cat attacks my feet. And especially if she's playing. Then I don't ever want that behavior to go away

My ankles are literally scarred from my kitten who is 9 months old! I mean it’s bad! He’s lucky he’s so cute and I love him! I will say that I never thought this was cute or allowed him to do this! I even went and got him every toy that Walmart sells lol. I can be just walking and he will still attack me. I don’t even have to be moving at all for him to do this. I did have to put on the nail caps and that helps a lot but he still has very sharp teeth! 😝
