Bebop articulation is an essential part of any saxophone player's basic skill set. For jazz players especially this technique is almost a way of life. The basics of it are very simple but getting the feeling is also that comes more naturally to some, and takes more time to develop for others. Listening to a lot of jazz records is one thing that really helps in developing this style of articulation, the other is.. LOTS of practice!
The technique is comprised of two parts: A certain attitude + a the articulation/ emphasizing of the first, and the every second (quarter) note that the player plays.
In this video lesson from HelloSaxophone.com Florian-James explains how it works and trough out the video he plays some examples to get you familiar with the typical bebop sound.

Basically its a groove, a mode, it helps if you try moving in a type of way that mirrors the sound...basically kinda dance with it. Its really a "when you get it, you get it" thing, know what I mean?

Really excellent! I watch a lot of sax vids and you do such a good job of diving into the meat of bebop soloing. You make it easy to understand because you stick to the basic scale and just add rhythm. Thanks!

Learned a lot from this, nice tips for practicing if you like be-bop! Jazz players all love this. It kills sales, of course, because listeners want something accessible, hence the popularity of rock and blues; you got a memory tag, melody line you whistle on the way home. Melody line always the biggest draw for the greatest # of listeners, NOT a big thing with be-bop.

Don't think that's entirely true. Often I hear Bird play a four-chord-arpeggio by tonguing the first note and the second note but not the other two notes. With triplets that have an eigth-note pickup it also depends on wether they're on a strong or a weak beat when it comes to the way you tongue them.

Ok, I'm new to the saxophone I got a tenor sax, I'd like to learn to play it now. I wonder is there a sight or program that show the fingered key position for the music being played? I noticed it on hellosaxophone introduction. Thanks

Yes we show the finger-positions for some of the things you play in our program videos. Hello Saxophone is actually the first program ever to do this :)

    Hello James,
is it necessary that you can read notes for the Hello Saxophone starters guide? And what brand is the saxophone you use?
By the way, your video's are awesome!
