It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy. He was a remarkable musician & friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together. Sending all my love to Sheila & the Tandy family. Jeff Lynne
I bawled my eyes out hearing this in the Over and Out tour The lyrics hit different knowing this is a farewell message from Jeff to his fans over the years.
I played this album all the time in my senior year of high school (1978) and this song in particular had meaning as I prepared to leave my hometown for college. And now it’s 2020 and I still play it all the time. Loved ELO!
I'm with you on that I like the whale it's just kind of an eerie type of awesome Melody that really sticks to my heart so I'm with you I love the whole album.
My very favourite ELO track. I used to listen to this when I was alone, kids in bed, wife happily watching TV. Despite a happy life, this always brought tears to my eyes - like something was missing. That's the true power of music!!
Don't do it! I am teary-eyed listening to this album. Have had multiple copies, and put both of the spaceships together. Very anticlimactic if you ask me. Better to keep it in the original set. What a beautiful album. I had one set splayed open thumbtacked to my wall as a teenager. Don't do it!

1978. I was a senior in high school and this album was my soundtrack. 44 years later it's still the first 17 tracks on my SD card. I play the whole thing at least once a month.
I find this song absolutely timeless... one of the best from Electric Light Orchestra. It has a really inspirational message and a wonderful tone from begining to end. Love it.
Jeff the King of pop melodies. Great musicians are ELO. I am sad every time I speak to a Britain person who never heard of ELO? How can that be I ask myself?
ELO Out of the Blue is the seminal album from this era by Jeff Lynne and I for one cherish it forever but apart from the remarkable studio recording, don't even ever go there trying to recapture the sound. This a beautifully produced, polished recording, not to be messed with, on any level, ever. If you even see it performed live in concert it will certainly not have the same effect. The beautiful quality of a controlled studio is a wondrous thing, as this album proved.
I think it sounds bad compared to things of the same era, like Supertramp and Pink Floyd .. this is remastered audio, and thank god because the original sounds pretty bad. Love the music.
One of Jeffs BEST story of my life Im always moving on! "they sold me down the river".................. it is well past times Jeff got a knighthood for his services to music!!!! WHY have other people got it who arent worth anything and he doesnt get it?? SIR JEFF OF ELO!!!

Jeff Lynne. I have followed and listened since the 70s. I still am enjoying ALL of your work in my 50s. I so love your genius. If you ever need a singer - have got the chops. :) Find me in Florida. Stay safe!!!!
Jeff Lynne definitely is the absolute master when it comes to writing these gorgeous ballads... Big Wheels, Mission (A World Record), Midnight Blue, Need Her Love, WIld West Hero, Can't Get It Out of My Head ...so many masterpieces

This one makes me sing along instantly! Gorgeous. Side 1 of my Out Of The Blue tape ended with Jungle, which came after this song. When I eventually got the record I had a tough time adjusting.

My favorite album of all time. I listened to it non-stop when it came out. This music still resonates with me 47 years later.
@@rplace8737agree with you.
Was 14 when this album came out and still listening.

Agreed. They are so underrated. And they are just so amazing. ✌️😎
I do. I love all of Jeffs/ELOs songs.

What??? He died today?? How sad. RIP Richard Tandy. Cheers to you Richard! 🍻
So very, very sad. Such an incredibly talented man and a huge contributor to the success of ELO. RIP, Richard.💔
😢
Rest in Peace, Richard Tandy...
He will be remembered fondly.
One of the beauties on this planet is listening to the greatness of Jeff Lynne.
I bawled my eyes out hearing this in the Over and Out tour
The lyrics hit different knowing this is a farewell message from Jeff to his fans over the years.
I felt the same!!!
I'm 14, been listening to ELO for 3 years and first time seeing them was yesterday and that's sadly the last time I will ever see them again.
This has to be the best double album of all time. Superb . RIP the great Richard Tandy
Rest in peace, Richard Tandy 😢💔
Jeff wrote some of the greatest Ballads.Nearly brought to tears listening to a many number of his songs.
ok...3 tear drops...that was it
I forgot how lovely this song was until he played it live last weekend. I bet Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian loves ELO!
Listening to this song today, as well as Telephone Line. One of many bands my mother loved. She sadly passed away 5 weeks ago. I miss you Mama.
So beautiful! Never tire of this great music. 'I'm gonna be somebody, I'm stepping out!' Good motto for life!
This is what Elo was about harmonize. Strings great drumming
I played this album all the time in my senior year of high school (1978) and this song in particular had meaning as I prepared to leave my hometown for college. And now it’s 2020 and I still play it all the time. Loved ELO!
I first saw Jeff live back in 1970 or 71 to see a rock band with a violin and two cellos seemed so weird. I thought this is never going to work.
Shine bright Richard Tandy ✨️🌙✨️ sending love and comfort to you Jeff ♥️ 🙏 ♥️
Such a sad song yet uplifting at the same time. Only a genius like Jeff Lynne can do that!!!
A place to cry Dwight yoakam
This whole album is amazing. I don't even have a favorite song. I just play all the sides in order.
that is so right cookie.. just play it.. It plays like a short story
I'm with you on that I like the whale it's just kind of an eerie type of awesome Melody that really sticks to my heart so I'm with you I love the whole album.
So right, Cookie. It flows perfectly.
🎶👌👌🇫🇮
The way it once was, so long ago and yet just a memory now.
My very favourite ELO track. I used to listen to this when I was alone, kids in bed, wife happily watching TV. Despite a happy life, this always brought tears to my eyes - like something was missing.
That's the true power of music!!
I hear ya.
When you lose them, you will realize you had it all, and was missing nothing.
How morbid lol
Mee too, now
I am a huge ELO fan, and have been for 45 years. And this is my favorite track too :)
"Steppin' Out" is one of the best songs on the record.

I've been learning the bass line to this song . Best song on OOTB !

The album came with a cardboard spaceship that needed assembly. I still have it and am tempted to put it together before I die!

I still have the album but bought it at a used record store. No cardboard space ship. 😢
3:50 to 4:02 ... The orchestral strings with the choir fading in is pure magic!
i cant even believe that part. it's so short, it takes me somewhere. not for very long, but it takes me somewhere.
WHY do they not do this with their more recent songs? It's like they completely got rid of the orchestra. The strings are so good
It's Mr Blue Skyish!
@@zarrowthehorse The new albums are essentially Jeff Lynne solo albums
That intro is phenomenal. So are the harmonies!!!!

So remember this album and Kenny Everett promoting it a capital radio on his Saturday show, a time when the DJs were so connected to the music.
The master of the melodic and songs of longing Mr Jeff Lynne.
Out of the Blue is the most fantastic music album I ever listened to. It's a shame that we don't get music as good as this anymore
Quite agree!
I woulda told them
One of the best albums ever created 👌🎧💎
The quality of the sound is the best of all ELO's records. It can't be reproduced.
Neither could the Beatles after 1966, particularly _Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band._

The difference is any other Proggresive Rock band and E.L.O. are much better than the drogadicts and overrated of Pink floyd.
This was also true for years for the Alan Parsons Project and for Isao Tomita.
But also give kudos to reinhold mack, the now defunct musicland studios and thd munich symphony for their work
