Lyrics:
Windin' your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you'll drink the night away
And forget about everything
This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people but it's got no soul
And it's taking you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything
You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin', you're tryin' now
Another year and then you'll be happy
Just one more year and then you'll be happy
But you're cryin', you're cryin' now
Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen and you talk about anything
He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down, in some quiet little town
And forget about everything
[Chorus]
But you know he'll always keep movin'
You know he's never gonna stop movin'
'Cause he's rollin', he's the rollin' stone
And when you wake up, it's a new mornin'
The sun is shinin', it's a new mornin'
You're goin', you're goin' home

Baker Street isn’t just a song anymore….it’s a full fledged masterpiece.
Baker Street just hits hard. That sax just emphasizes the lyrics. You get two of them and the guitar solo hits....which it just fucking is awesome....then more sax.
It's a state of mind 🤟
I totally agree😁😁
ALWAYS was a Masterpiece! 🍀
A feeling that everyone enjoys.
When this song came out in 1978 that saxophone just blew my mind. One of the most iconic intros to any song and still get the adrenaline flowing 45 years later.
Absolutey
hell yeah i was alive in 78 great times
I loved doin this tune
Looking back on 1978, I wonder how I ever survived that year.
❤
No one ever talks about the guitar riff only the Sax but it is outstanding as well.
one of the best guitar solos I think ever. Nice execution, phrasing, space, etc. A solo doesn't have to be a million notes to be great
Everything about this song I love.
I agree, a wonderful guitar solo. Pretty much perfect.
@@1earthangel2023 yes it's a 20th century classic.
It's a good one, for sure.
Yesterday I visited London and caught the tube from Baker St. As I descended the escalator I was hummimg the tune silently inside my mind and a man behind me started whistling the sax part. Really good whistling too.
Thank you mr whistler...you made my day. I'd just been for a hospital appointment and your spontaneity was so cool and made me smile. Keep whistling and spreading those happy Baker St vibes.
Love does this ❤

I would go back to this time and era in a New York minute - music was so great then done by so many different artists - this song epitomizes the 80's - what a great time it was

I love this song more and more every time I hear it. ❤❤
One of the most underrated songs of all time. A true classic. Never gets old for me. I have so many more cliches to describe this song, but I think you get the drift.
Good on you Mr Roller!
Rusty copacabana by Barry Manilow won that year. I stand by my comment.
Me funaron
The laid back lyrics, the words, sax solo, bass, rhythm, such a loss of a man and his music, it will live on forever... how did he do it..... I doubt if many musicians songwriters will achieve anything like this
I’m sorry to tell you that but this song is a classic with a phenomenal succes
RIP Gerry. This song will be played forever.
46 years ago when this song came out I was working at a hotel. I was 20 yrs old. I met this trucker a few years older than me whose truck was broke down. We would spend the next 10 days together while his truck was being repaired. This was our song. Just as Gerry sings "Your going home"....he did....back home to New Jersey...and I never saw him again....All these years later I still think about him whenever I hear this song...
He shouldve been your husband!!! Beautiful story.....
Sue, wonder if he's still alive??.
Now THAT'S what I call room service! Legend!
So emotional , you must still love him after all those years
legendary!!!!
My dear Grandpa is going for his cancer operation in the new year. He loves this song. I'm trying to sing for him instead of cry. I love you Grandpa. You are my hero.
I hope everything goes well.
Prayers and positive thoughts to you and yours. I'm sure he appreciates you being there for him, and with him.

It’s surely not underrated here. Wow.

Now I'm a drummer who has been playing for 58 years. I worked at Chess Records in Chicago and seen/experienced some wild sh*t my time there. In the end, it's all good! Some of the remarks I've read here astound me. I don't think some of your musical experiences at the most have to deal with the volumn knob on your stereo. Gerry Rafferty for those of you not knowing how talented the man was. He played guitar AND piano. He wrote the songs, sang them and directed/produced each song. Not an easy feat. Give the man the accolades he deserves, don't tear him down. Please. Bless you brother.
Well said...thank you. Gerry Rafferty was so very talented, but he never toured. I read once it was due to fear of traveling and severe stage fright. Baker Street was so deep in meaning, and in my humble opinion was his best.
I understand you. What is all this.
Ok
Thank you for that,,❤all great musicians work so hard and deserve much respect, ❤ I raised my boys to work and play music, 2 are guitarist and one a drummer!,one has his own band in Salt Lake City, , God Bless all. musicians who give the rest of us pure joy, listening to their talents ❤

I just love it the sax gives me goosebumps
This song is a gem. Great memories
Summer of '78; 16 years old and mesmerized by Rafferty's silky voice and that SAX...
It just doesn't get any better, and think about the fact that Gerry grew up in Scotland. Somehow, he tapped into the American vibe of what was going on at that time and adapted it and created magic out of it all.
Rafferty absolutely nailed it.
Icon of 70s music writ large.
And no, PLEASE do not post idiotic geriatric missives about how "that was real music, no this or that, blah blah." That's idiotic and irrelevant.
There is plenty of good music out there now, but the point is that this was the 70s, and Raffrerty helped define the era.
I was there.
Same age, still mesmerized, great song :)

My daughter listens. I was a young adult when this song came out. One of the best! Still sounds exceptional today! Good to pass on to a younger generation. My daughter says "of course i remember! You used to listen to this Mom" ❤
This is truely one of the greatest songs ever. I can remember when it was released way back and I still love it. Brings me right back to the 70's

How in God's green earth, could this 1978 epic song NOT win Record of The Year at the Grammy Awards??
Gerry Rafferty created a masterpiece! That sax solo is one of the best of all-time! RIP Gerry, thank you for giving us great music.
Well said 👍🏴
Its probably too good for the academy to consider. And when they used to release an album in the 70s, the single off it was always the worse song? Why?
I read this somewhere else of You Tube, "One of the reason's Rafferty is not better known is that he famously hated the music industry and refused to do concerts or tv appearances to promote album sales for the CEO's of the record industry". Maybe that had something to do with it.
Because... the Grammys are ridiculous.
Nothing about the song is all that flashy. Just a great sound, great lyrics, great groove.
Such a classic song that makes you realize you can never go back as hard as you try

He wrote this song while staying at a friends place on Baker Street. He was frustrated with his old music contract that wouldn’t allow him to release any music for 3 years. During that time he wrote his best song!

Yep
When you wake up it's a new morning the sun is shining it's a new morning you're going you're going home. There's always hope.
His immense talent and his songs are still as popular today as they were then. In an interview with Mark Knoefler, he said they would go to the pub often after the pub closed Gerry aways kept drinking when he went home or somewhere else. He knew then that Gerry was slowly sinking into addiction. His father also died an alcoholic, so it seems to have been a genetic trait. This song and right down the line are classics.
I still pull over when I'm driving and this song comes on and crank up the volume just to get the full effect. It never gets old. Just better and better.
Hi beautiful Jane, how are you doing 😊👋

He's the rolling stone!

This always brings back memories of me aged 7. My Dad (now 80) used to be a carpenter and joiner. He was the driver for his mates so he'd be out of the house by 5 am collecting them. My Mum (RIP) would wake up with him to make him breakfast. I would sneak out of my bedroom and climb into their bed. I always loved listening to Terry Wogan on my Mums little red plastic radio propped on her dressing table. I would doze with songs like this and Bryan Ferry, Bee Gees playing in the background. I always remember this as being summertime or autumn for some reason . I loved watching the shadow of leaves from the tree outside our house dance against the curtains as the morning got lighter. My mum would then call up the stairs to wake me and my sister up for school. This song always reminds me of this! Love you always Mum xxx
I love the sentiment here. Songs like this one will always have a special place in our lives with wonderful memories like this.
your mum always love you God bless her

This song, in particular, brings me back to my childhood in the 70s more than any other song. When I hear it, I literally see my surroundings through a young child's eyes, from pushing a coin into a phone box calling home, to riding on the top deck of the bus (49A) where people were smoking, to joining the Boys Brigade (26th Brighton), or playing in the 67 Centre (Moulsecoomb)... Proud to have grown up where I did in the 70s, even if we had very little financially, we had mates, we had fresh air... Crazy looking back on your life when you had absolutely no clue as to where you would end up:) For me, coming from a poor area, I ended up becoming an English teacher - actually worked in a school in Baker Street, then lived and worked in Japan 18 years before moving to Italy.💫 Life is all about moving forwards, but it's important to look back and remember your beginnings.

This is in my dearly departed Dad's top 5 songs. I never appreciated his tastes in music so much when he was with us. However I'm now enjoying with much relish all his favourites. Why we think we know everything when we are young is beyond me now!
It's just the normal.Young people for think they no better than our parents an adults. Its a step in life's progression
What are the other 4?
The saxophone and guitar send chills down my spine!! What a timeless ageless classic!!❤
One of the greatest songs ever recorded. The instantly recognizable sax riff and insane electric guitar solo stand out, but the lyrics are incredible as well. Maybe the most underrated song ever recorded. One of my top ten favorites of all time. This song instantly takes me back to my childhood growing up in the late 70's.
That Guitar solo is just soooo sweet🎸💯
No one makes songs like this anymore. I have been enamored with this song since the first time I heard it when I was a young man in my 20's . Forty some years later and it never gets old.
Just put a comment at the top to start a list. There've been some great songs through the years. Check it out, add a few. This could be awesome if we can get people to add cool songs. Could be one heck of a play list.
Я искала эту песню много лет....

Я помню, как ДАВНО услышал эту песню по AM-радио.. Не могу поверить, что она прямо здесь, на TH-cam! 😁👍
Yes people do. It's your fault for not searching for it
It’s a masterpiece, but no one ever seems to give enough credit to the guitar solo and the gorgeous lyrics. And however familiar the sax is, it’s just breathtaking whenever you hear it. It’s like an expression of all the noise of the city, the traffic, the roar, the car horns.
Completely appreciated here.🙏
Amazing...absolutely amazing.
Cheers
my man got road head for that one. nice
London.
This song never gets old!
But I am getting old...
Oh, the days that the saxophone was king! I loved, love this song.
A song of utter perfection. You couldn't change a single thing and improve it. Masterpeice.

The heart ❤️ loves what it loves.
Heard this when I was kid and instantly fell in love with the sound of the saxophone.
Saw the name of this song in a comment under the Dave Ramsey show and decided to look it up. I love that musical introduction. That saxophone is everything 🎷🎷🎷🎶🎧❤
I remember buying this song as a single in 1978, when I was aged 21 years, and thought what a powerful, thought provoking song it was. All these years on I now regard it as a true classic hit of the 1970's, one that can't be forgotten
Same age,same thought
True... I'm only 33 and heard it as a kid in the 90s and it still resonates today 2021
This music hits different than modern stuff. Timeless and melodious... I am your age divided by 3, but I really started enjoying 60s 70s 80s music. Back in the day the artists were ardent and terpsichorean. Nowadays talent seems to fade away. They make beats using a computer instead of using real instruments. And artists' voices are improved with audio editing software. Therefore even less talented artists can become famous that only care about the money.
But times change I guess and its important to accept that. Who knows what music they will make in the year 2150 🤔😮
do you still have the single?
I'm beginning to think this could just be the greatest song of all time
Feel calm smile and nice feeling🤗
Either this or Axl's Theme from Beverly Hills Cop
Head to head with Al Stewart's " Year of the Cat"...unforgettable songs
@@adrianfallavollita3247 I second that!
Sure is...just like myself, circa 1978
This never get's old
The greatest sax solo in rock, period.
+R'onnberry Chadnickle And Money! :D
+mike lee. I'm with you on that Mike.

What could have been a wah-wah guitar solo.
+mike lee So true. It single-handedly brought the saxophone back to popular music
Try "one step beyond " from madness for a proper sax belter
That song will always bring me back to summer of 78. The sax is beautiful and the guitar solo at the end is badass. You wouldn't expect it in a "light rock" song.
When Gerry wrote and sang this song the world was introduced to the immensely gifted and multi talents of what was at the time an unknown Scottish singer songwriter. Gerry went on to prove to the world he was the real deal. The legend lives on in his music.
👌
wasn't unknown....he had success with Stealers Wheel and was well known on the gig circuit
Said it all Bro:.
Well said! No need for further comment folks.
Steel Wheelers!
For eternity ...
It's poetry, it's beautiful, it has soul, heart and rhythm. In years to come who will make the masterpiece?
Masterpiece
What do you mean mate?
Get off the tube at Baker Street in London and you can bet there will be a busker with a saxophone playing this.
Literally never heard that once on Baker Street.
I did recently... there wasn't
I wish it was the case. Baker Street is just a dump.
And I'd stand listen and tip every damn time!
