Do you really need a rear bumper? Find out the pros and cons of having a rear bumper on a Toyota 5th Gen 4Runner and Lexus GX460. What style of bumper do you need?
Why I chose the Expedition One rear bumper for both rigs and the pros/cons of this specific bumper.
great video. The weight is an issue... after adding all the skids and stuff it's so much weight... lol... for now we just bash up the oem plastic... cheap and lightweight. Fantastic video 😃
I am getting an aluminum Victory 4x4 front bumper (without grill hoops for now) since it’s only 47 pounds and an Outgear Solutuons High Clearance Sandstorm tube bumper to keep my weight down.
Dude i really wish i found your channel before i built mine i was ignorant of 5th gens, and all this stuff I did well dont get me wrong but your channel is a first timers treasure trove, JMO.
C4 is a great company…. I wouldnt be too sad 😂. I saw you got the aluminum RCI?…. Wait till you get to my skid plate video 😂😂.
After holidays going to do a walk around vid of the rigs. I feel like your style of overlanding would really apply…. Cuz that’s my style and I broke a lot of stuff till I learned on these new rigs! Even broke a rear axle 😖
So glad I found this channel recently. The 3 bumpers that stand out to me is expedition one, c4 and Nguyen works (nice that you were able to show it at the end, curious about your thoughts on it because it doesn't seem like much protection). Love that handles on the exp one, but I also love that fact that c4 and Nguyen works have table fold downs for both swing outs. The only dilemma I really run into with a bumper and now skids from your last video just seems like weight on weight, especially when adding a RTT. Which kind of makes me lean towards aluminum skids to save at least some weight.
Edit: I just learned expedition one makes a table for the swing out. It’s a bit different than others as the swing out sits closer to the hatch than other bumpers for a sleeker look. As for weight. Yup… it sucks to keep adding. Really depends on your needs. I have heavy bumper, steel skids, and only 115 pound RTT (working on a 90 pound). But minimal drawer systems, kitchen, and tools. My other rig is overbuilt to carry all the heavy weight (mostly kitchen and tools). Can’t give advice here as everyone’s build/needs are different.
I can’t say much about the C4 as I’ve never played with it. I didn’t get it because of the handles (between dual swing arms) and I didn’t like the look of the full sides panels covered. I have their front bumper on my other 4R and can say that C4 builds very very sturdy stuff… so I’d assume they build a lasting rear bumper.
On the other question I didn’t want to go into details but I started this channel with the intent of giving real world reviews and not just fluff. So here goes…. I loved the design of Nguyen works bumper… and I really considered it for these builds but hesitated because they were new to the industry. I saw a few in person yesterday. The none tire carrier version is awesome. I wouldn’t worry at all about rock damage in it to be honest as the way it’s built underneath, the frame would take most of the hit (in most circumstances) However the tire carrier itself felt under built for heavy abuse. I saw two yesterday. On the tire punch test one shook similar to the expedition one (acceptable) but had a slight rattle in the handle and the other shook and rattled wayyyy more. Not sure if that was an old build or an older version. Again… I didn’t play with the bumper on my rig for a few months so it’s hard to say anything here… but I personally wouldn’t buy it with the mindset that it will last forever. The lightest bumper I saw that seemed stout was Outgear Solutions. Not sure of the weight but looks fairly light. It felt very sturdy when I hit the tire. I also don’t know if it was a recent install and how hard the vehicle drives off-road so hard for me to say it’s great without testing…. But based on what I saw… I would put that bumper on my rig if I was trying to go light.
@@SandyCats Thank you for the reply. I definitely have the same thoughts with Nguyen works, looks amazing but just seems like one hit might do it in. So I kind of lean towards C4 just because of the tables (really helps me out for camping). Excited to see what else you'll be posting here. Seem to have so much knowledge about a hobby I've just started only 2 years ago! What RTT are you currently using with your setup? Also, seems like for the 4runner a supercharger might be a must with all the weight being added.
@@JonnieF14 I had some custom RTTs made a about 8 months ago that came in at 115-117 pounds. I Kept 2 and sold the rest. Now I’m developing a lighter one that will become a video eventually and a DIY kit (hopefully fairly cheap). But about a year away from that.
To be honest… I’d skip the SC. More weight and power up front gets heavy on components. That’s why I had to go RCLT and Dana 60 on the other rig. With the white 4runner regeared it’s fast enough for everything we need.

Off-topic: you mentioned that you have a "Long Range America" auxiliary fuel tank. When the vehicle was new and you were planning your build, before you did your suspension, did you add up the weights of all the components that you eventually would have on the vehicle, including the 24 gal aux fuel tank, before deciding on what suspension to get? How did the total ultimate weight influence your choice? Also, does your Off-Road have KDSS and, if so, did it influence which suspension you ultimately chose? (I am asking because I just got a 2023 TRD Off-Road Premium w/KDSS and am planning what to do, and in what order. Also, I am the original owner of an '86 4Runner with an aux fuel tank, 14 gal, and I love having it). I love your content, thank you for the time and effort you put into making your videos.
For the first question…. Kind of. I put ALL the weight on the vehicle first. Then I installed the suspension and started dialing it in. I went with Elkas because they tune their shocks for heavier loads. I believe dobinsons does as well. Fox tunes for closer to stock (FYI). It still took me about 6 months to dial in the ride… I went through four sets of rear coils and 3 sets of front until I got it dialed in perfectly.
I’m going to post a vid shortly (hopefully Sunday or Monday) discussing this on the 4Runner.
I do not have KDSS on the 4R. The GX does. KDSS would not influence my suspension choice at all.

I own a Toyota fj cruiser I installed expedition one dual.swing and jerry cans I was going to tilt my spare time but I kept upright and it even with my 2 jerry cans that leaves me room for something else small to carry and I have 2 camera on my rear one off the front runner rack so I can look over the spare tire and tilt down for offroad and other is the one expedition one that mounts off rear door for looking down I love expedition one dual.swing for my yota the only mistake I made was not installing the rear back up light before installing rear bumper no big deal but I had to undo the bolts to get them to fix 😮 great product I don't plan taking to the limit by abuse the rear bumper because it took months to get it not sure if build time any better I agree on latch easy to open and close securely
Appreciate the video. Been scrambling my brain trying to determine which I want for my 5th Gen for off-roading and camping on a semi daily driver.
Great considerations. If you have a roof-rack, it's probably better to put the spare tyre there. Yes, the weight is higher up, but then if you can save 50+ kg, that's a huge weight saving. Water - I would always carry inside the car. There are so many tank solutions now, some impermanent ones that fit e.g. behind the rear seats. Since it is heavy, best store it close to the center of gravity. Even a flat 50-60 l tank on the floor below the rear seats works well for rear passengers. Only downside is that their knees a re slightly more bent - but if they are children that's not even the case. Second point is that the water will be way cooler if carried inside.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us on both of these builds. Does the Expedition Rear Bumper has some sort of locking device or a pin to prevent the dual arms from swing out while on the road?
It does not have a secondary device. But the way the handle is built, I can’t see it being able to open in any way without human interference. FYI… on my previous SSO bumper, my screw in pin wiggled out while off-roading… I’ve also heard of that happening to others on different bumpers.

I love them. They will wear 2X faster than others but outperform others in basically every environment I’ve been in. Great in snow and wet. Can’t really comment on loudness just because I feel every similar tire is similar sound. You’ll hear it though…

Are there any metal bumpers that still allow Blindspot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic alert to function?
The expedition one allowed all 4 rear sensors to remain functional on the GX460. Not sure about others (didn’t do the research, sorry).
For the 2022 4Runner, C4 was developing a relocation kit to put the BSM monitors where the rear lights would go on their rear bumper. I've been looking at the expedition one bumper for a while now and I'm tempted to get it and try doing my own BSM relocation on it, but not sure how much room there is to work with behind the light pod holes.
@@aliao17 plenty. As it’s the same as on the GX460 which has the holes. Just a pain to put on (for testing) as the factory wiring is short… and you can access the side reads with the bumper fully seated…. So you will need some tilting the bumper on the frame to put in the two monitors on the sides
@@SandyCats Thanks for the reply! Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding, but I was under the impression that the GX460 bumpers only had the smaller round parking sensors? The BSM monitors on the 2022+ 4Runners are large square Continental units located under the taillights. I think for these to not throw errors and somewhat work OK the light cutouts on the Exp1 would have to be modified to fit them (like in your supplementary bumper video) and custom mounts fabricated.
@@aliao17 my fault. I didn’t know the 22+ had a different style sensor. I’m looking at online photos and some seem to have same type/location sensors as the GX. haven't tested one. Will add to my list though. Will have new bumper vid coming out within a month with various bumper testing.

I wasn’t too impressed. I’ve heard mixed reviews on them. Supposedly they made a newer version that’s better and I may have seen the older versions but not sure on that.

What are the lights on the bumper controlled by or connected to, ie, connected to reverse lights?
Both rigs have the lights wired to a switch panel in the vehicle. On the GX we also wired the lights to reverse lights as you lose the factory reverse lights with this bumper. We don't lose factory reverse with 4Runner.
? What is your opinion about the expedition 1 swing out arm attached to the door so they open together. I would think with body flex it would be a terrible idea
Yup. Agree on your thoughts. Furthermore… I made a new video on rear swing outs. I would watch that before buying expedition one. Nothing bad…. But need to knows.

Do you still have receivers on that bumper that can tow at least small stuff on the 4runner? Have you seen any victory 4x4 bumpers and did the punch test you mentioned? I am looking for rear bumpers and am considering the outgear solutions you mentioned since it looks relatively lightweight and sturdy. I'm also considering the victory 4x4 because the carrier is removable and still have a tow hitch although not rated.
Unfortunately I have not seen a Victory to test it. With the expedition one you can keep your factory receiver. I just removed it because I don’t need it and it’s a rock magnet.
That’s nice. It is a rock magnet but it’s nice to have when needed. Is it accessible to remove/install the receiver on the fly or do you have to remove/pain in the butt?
@@samro9744 unfortunately with the exp one setup you need to remove the bumper completely to put on the hitch. On my old SSO bumper (they don’t make them anymore) you were able to easily put on and off fast. I’m sure some bumpers offer that option (just don’t know which ones).

1:20 Anything over a 33"/34" ? I'm considering 285/75/17's (34's) and want to know if this will fit underneath and avoid a bumper for my GX470 ?
You can avoid the bumper. But you’ll still need a BMC and some hammering with 34s. Id also limit your uptravel in the rear

@@bb5op585 It is not on this model. Not sure if they have a beadlock imitation model. I have this model on all my rigs as its the lightest functional beadlock i could find in the market at the time.
How do you pass the CA smog check in the future with long range fuel tank? I will fail you if I see that, this is total illegal in CA.
If it's considered a company vehicle you can get away with it if I remember correctly. I'm originally from the east coast so I could be wrong.

Sorry, I realize this video is about the bumper, but my question is about the long-range amarican Aux fuel tank. Does it affect the factory warranty?
How do you feel about products like the RIGD ultraswing which can carry wheel, jerrycan, fold down table and such? Obviously no protection, but do you have any experience or observations of others?
Wilco I’ve tested and it shook… more than I’d like for my confort. Rigid I liked… still shakes but feels more sturdy. Id be personally comfortable with it as long as I’m not using it too much on bumpy roads going at speed (over 10-15 mph). Another company I looked at but haven’t seen them in person is DirtCom. They do look solidly built but never gave them the “punch test.” If I would plan on doing light trails and not often… I’d prefer rigid or dirtcom over full size so I don’t have to deal with full bumper on a daily driver
@@SandyCats I appreciate the quick reply. I've been taking my time to build my rig to handle all things, but it is a daily driver that I'm not sure the weight is worth it.
I offroad a few miles just getting to/from my home.
But the main reason I went to steel bumpers on my 4runner is because I go into town. Town has people. People are idiots. That drive.
I'm keeping my spare tire underneath. It's too heavy now that I'm too old to lift it up there.

Loving the videos man! I l've been looking at the Expedition one bumper with the single swing out that integrates with the rear hatch. Alternatively, I was thinking I could get one with no swing out and use the JW Offroad tire carrier directly on the rear hatch. I'm interested why you chose the dual swing out. Have you done the shake test on either of the other options?
Unfortunately I have yet to see one with the single swing out. But I will assume it would shake less due to the higher point of attachment. I chose the dual as I needed to carry dual jerry cans.
