The M276 has a twin turbocharged variant (M276.8). The displacement was reduced to 3.0L from 3.5L for the twin turbocharged variant. The NA variant also has PCV oil separator problems that can cause oil to enter the intake system. Ive seen it where it was so bad that it soaked the engine air filter and dripped onto the hot exhaust beneath the air filter. Also, the M272 counter balance shaft problem impacted earlier production M272s. By around 2007-08, the counter balance shaft issue was addressed. One issue that plagues the M272 and M112 is that upper idler pulley seizing causing the belt to shred at around 100k.
That's right. When he said it was naturally aspirated only and read that it was only up to 302hp I was like, na-ah, add another 100hp to that in the C43 AMG. Damn. I know the OM642 as one of the more reliable Diesel Engines as V6. The 3.0 TDI V6 from Audi is also great but they have huge issues with horribly configurated EGR Systems leading to cogged up intake manifolds leading to severe catastrophies.
The m276 was not strictly N/A and the power figures are wrong. It made 385 hp in all of the facelift 43 AMG's and a hefty amount of torque under 2k rpm. It is a very strong and reliable, the twin turbo variant can produce 450+ hp and well over 500 ft-lbs of torque with an ecu tune. Might I also add it may be one of the best sounding engines on this list, go have a listen to a C43 with the AMG exhaust. I think it is at least as good as the M112, if not better and should be in the "A" tier imo.
A couple comments: In comparison to the M273 which you included in your German V8 tier list, which had basically the exact same issues (granted, the M273 did not need a balance shaft like the M272, as the 90* V8 is inherently balanced unlike a 90* V6, but suffered the same improper metallurgy for the sprocket), you notably rated it D-tier, while the arguably cheaper, much more mundane M272 was rated as a high C-tier. Of course, both of these engines suffered the same teething problems in their early production, with the engines being largely immune from this issue by late 2008. The M272 was produced in much higher numbers, and the damage that could cause was arguably much more severe with the balance shaft equipped V6. Yes, I know, I have an M273 car and I will die on this hill, because it has gone nearly 200K absolutely trouble-free miles with regular maintenance. The 08-09+ M272/M273 engines are extremely solid engines when properly maintained, and even at my current odometer, oil consumption is practically nonexistent. I will give credit to Audi, though! In the last decade, they’ve really been able to make some very solid V6 engines. I had a very bad taste in my mouth left from a 3.2 in an older A6, since the timing system is located at the rear of the engine, which made servicing them a nightmare, on top of the heinous amount of oil it leaked from just about every seal and gasket, but being more familiar with them (and Euro cars in general), the fixes aren’t too bad if you’ve got the time on your hands to deal with these issues properly. Excellent work on this one regardless of my rantings🤣
I've got a om642 in my c320 cdi t and a m276 in my c400 4m Coupé and the E400 4m Coupé. Especially the m276 is a Masterpiece of a V6-Engine. Never had a V6-Engine which runs so quiet, smoot and soft and reacts so good to the gas pedal. The om642 is a bear of an engine, it also runs very smooth and quiet for a diesel engine. In my opinion, the Audi V6 are no match for the Benz's engines, only the Inline-6 of BMW are equal.
Actually, the first Mercedes V6 engine is the M106. This engine was only used in the Mercedes W202 DTM cars, so not in production ones. Not a lot of people know about this engine, but for me it should belong in the S-tier. 400 hp 300 nm and 12.500 rpm🤤
Owned a B5 RS4 for 3+ years. 380HP is very mild knowing it was simply downtuned to meet up with regulations. engines could go easily for 500HP and 600nm of torque.
Also the om642 tries constantly kill itself by leaking oil through intake seal on the swril flap motor thus liliting air flow to the engine. Also the engine oil cooler is a bitch to work on😅. I love the engine. But hate it at the same time. 280 000km still going strong💪
Odd that you have the A6 and A7 with different engine years. In North America everything is identical. The 2016-2018 A6/7 have 837 Evo engines which do have a lot of minor changes to the engine and supercharger to uncrease reliability and fuel mileage. I like the fact the EA839 packs a bigger punch than the EA837, but as an owner of a dual pulley EA837 Evo, I can attest to the instant hit of torque.
