Bought the original Danelectro cool cat chorus back in the day (the one that weighs about 1kg). Actually bought three units of it, each 18v, each € 20,- It sounded glorious! I'm looking for that stereo sound again, maybe in a lighter, pedalboard-friendly version. I was looking for the Alexander sugarcube, but it wabbles to much for my taste. I don't want too much movement especially not too much movement in volume. Many choruses sound like tremolos, I hate that, I want one steady volume.
For my chorus effect, I use the detune on my old Boss Harmonist pedal. Subtle without the wobbly modulation and makes the the sound lush and delicious. I have tried so many chorus pedals and always come back to the Harmonist detune. Just wonderful… thanks for all your awesome work gentlemen.
@@tobymoorhouse I love my harmonist for the detune chorusey effect but sometimes the delay is annoying! Wish I could find a pedal that would detune without an audible delay
@@RossMcMorgan I find the delay a little hard to bear for harmonies.. I've started using the HR2 in front of a wet only reverb on a parallel loop with the dry signal. The delay doesn't matter then and you get some lovely ethereal pad-like harmonies.

Absolutely beautiful tones and playing. Wet-Dy-Wet Stereo takes me to a very special place. The creative parts of the brain really lit up during this episode, thank you.
Your video on the Dimension C was the reason i bought one. Its the best pedal i've ever bought, i use it in stereo with a Marshall DSL40C and a Vox AC15C1 and its magical. Little delay and a very subtle trem from the AC15 and its so so ambient 👌

Wonderful explanation - can't say enough good things about this video. Particularly in the studio this is really practical and helpful info. For the average bar band, the problem with stereo is if you separate the cabinets so that one is on each side of the stage and you're standing on one side, then you only hear half of your signal. Thus you turn up to hear a proper blend, and then the other band members turn up to get their blend and on goes the battle. Of course, if you're also the singer and standing in the middle of the stage, then no problem.
For me, chorus will always be the “clean” sounds on AFI’s Sing the Sorrow… idk if many in TPS land know of that band or that album, but this episode immediate made me think of them. Also reminded me why I need a chorus. Thanks guys!
Hmm, well you may know better than me… sure sounds like chorus on This Time Imperfect and The Leaving Song, the former being specifically what Dan’s playing reminded me of. However, as much as I know and love all those albums, it’s STS that instantly came to mind. Idk, call me crazy.
You would REALLY love the band White Lung and their album Deep Fantasy. The song “Drown With the Monster” in particular has some straight up AFI tones.
Brilliant video. I want wide stereo chorus when I can have it, but not all live engineers will accommodate a guitarist's aspirations of spatial dominance. So the demo of what happens to the different types of pedals when stereo is summed to mono was exactly what I needed to understand.
For Dan especially- I struggled for over a decade to find a chorus I could relate to and fell in love with the Paradox Futura- it’s a BBD chorus that includes optional envelope control over rate and/or depth. It’s not stereo but it has a dry/chorus/vibrato knob so you can run it wet/dry. I think you would LOVE it if you have a chance to try it out.
What an engrossing episode. I've learnt a great deal about this effect that I've been using (judiciously) for over 40 years. My first ever experience with chorus was plugging an L-series Strat into a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 back in 1978. I was blown away! Then I tried a friend's CE-1. In mono, but glorious. Thanks for such and incredibly deep and informative exposition on all manner of things regarding guitar FX. But especially regarding chorus in general and the TC Electronics TC SCF in particular. My SCF+ has been in mothballs for many years - a few days ago I though I should revisit this little bewdy. This clip has been part of me learning how to use it in a manner that I had no idea of when using 30 odd years ago. You have also given me a far greater understanding of what's going on with that pedal. Maybe I'll now be able to realise more of its full potential. Thanks so much!
Great stuff. I love my Boss DC-2w - it's just addictive. I'm also glad you guys Finally got a Barber Electronics Overdrive on the channel. I've been Raving about my Gain Changer SR = phenomenal pedal. Really enjoyed this episode.
Wow! It's chorus, but better! I recently explained to my wife how wonderful the separated signals sound when played through headphones (using my old CE-3), a sound I discovered by accident back in the late '90s. Sure, chorus has been very well used, overused according to some, but those tones you guys got were magnificent. Now I think I have to get me a Bassbreaker to go along with my Delta Blues 210. Also, I noticed that during the dual mono vs stereo example, the dB meter showed roughly 2 dB louder during the stereo play, so it's not just a perceived volume increase, it's actually real. Cool stuff, and very informative. Cheers and thanks!
I will very soon go stereo with second Marshall DSL20 and I was looking for THE best way to split signal. I have got most useful answer possible! Thank you a lot!
Thanks for this great look at how Chorus gives a rig some "space". I personally use the SCF Gold for a similar thing in my W-D-W rig, but my usual Wet/Dry rig has the Vahlbruch Chorus, which is similar to the CE-2 but is just a little more "lush" with a depth, mix and speed control. And it's true bypass and acts as a splitter even in true bypass. - simply everything a small boy could want!
1. Headphones enhances this episode. 2. Nothing wrong with reminding those of us who love the show how the show is funded so we can continue to enjoy it.
Wow what a great immersion into the folds of chorus. The explanation of what is really happening with time and phase while in headphones really made the function clear. Reminds me of the "wide" setting that (fancy-ish)boom boxes came with in the 80's. I recently bought an 80's Roland JC77 from Japan- which arrived with a smashed speaker baffle and grill frame. After rewiring the primary to US voltage(off schematic- same PT for world-wide power) and painstakingly rebuilding the baffle and frame and a deep clean, fired it up and viola! Deep stereo chorus and even on lowest rate and depth the sound from the amp is all enveloping in the room while still being pronounced and not at all lost in a live full band mix. Keeper. Thank you for this show, I've been a fan since you guys were in the corner and really appreciate how you approach sharing your knowledge and opinions. If you ever are coming to Maui I can set up shows, ( I have an in at Mick Fleetwoods restaurant and venue as well as others) have a back up band ready to go and heck, even a cozy studio apt ready. Think about it. Thanks again for what you both do. Mahalo!
Oooh Stereo Chorus was a revelation for me in the 80's : I had an Ibanez Rack UE405 (Maxon) with a stereo Chorus on it, and the time I decided to plug the second output in an H/H bass Amp, I became addicted to that sound. I play stereo since then, even if I tend to use more stereo mod delays, Flangers etc... Anyway, thanks so much for this recap : very pleasing and very interesting and very well explained. The Pitch shift+Chorus or Dimension D+Pitch Shifter in stereo is a sexy combination as well (very aquatic feel) you should try one day ! (may be Steeve Steven secret sauce during the 80's ?)
I have an old danelectro stereo chorus that’s just perfect its been on countless gigs 18V the only pedal that has stayed through out the pedals that have come and gone. Great stuff between a Carr Telstar and a Morgan its just it. Love TPS my go to on anything guitar thanks for all your hard work.
I love seeing the Tone Press! I have a green one of and love it. I have figured out I like vibrato more than chorus usually. There are some super inspiring sounds here though!
Best episode you guys have done. Awesome sounds. Doyle Bramhall on Dogs with Waters very similar tone and my favourite of all time. Thank you guys, keep up the good work, gives me a nice distraction when I’m in too much pain to play. 🙏
So, before the rack days for me, my chorus was the DOD Fx-65. It had its own thing, but I could tweak to get that thinning out so that it was sort of Dim-C like. This show was amazing and I all I was ever missing in those old rigs was that middle dry amp. That's mind blowingly yummy. Great show - and wow, that Barber pedal is a sweet thing!
I’ve been a fan of Barber electronics pedals for a long time. The tone press is actually a compressor not an equalizer. It was one of the first pedal compressors to offer a blend control to be able to do parallel compression. One of my favourite pedals from them is the LTD, a very transparent boost/overdrive pedal. Also if you’re looking for a similarly versatile pedal, the gain changer runs the gamut of all of their versions of the LTD pedal. Their pedals all sound great, are well built with quality components and are very fairly priced
I can understand why people got burned out on chorus, but personally, i could never get tired of chorus. I would love to see u guys mess around with the brand new releases of the Jackson Audio New Wave chorus, and the Beetronics SeaBee. Both BB analog chorus with digital control and both takes chorus to another level while keeping traditional chorus tones on board.
A modulated delayed signal is mathematically identical to a modulated pitch shift, or simpler said a vibrato :) So basically , a chorus is a mix of a straight and a vibrato signal. That is why it sounds so great in stereo, with a perfect separation.
Thanks Dan and Mick for this episode! I especially enjoyed the explanation of Haas effect etc, I have an 80’s Ibanez CS9 that I run always-on into two amps for the widening effect. I just turn the depth up when I need actual modulation!
My first "Boss Chorus" was actually my first amp, in 1985 - a Roland JC-160. It was150w, bi-amped, full stereo, through 4x10s. I was a little underwhelmed by the CE-2 mono out into a smaller, lighter, more portable amp after that experience. I couldn't afford two amps so the thought never crossed my mind to run two. Now I have a JC-22 that almost does it with 2x6s. Now I need to stack my Bassbreaker 007 on top of it. 😁
So, it was definitely no "lovely gentleman" who brought the original "Tone Pump EQ" to the experience day... 'twas me! (And it's a Tone Pump, not a Tone Press... the latter is the compressor he does.) Very glad you managed to get Dave to build you one, and that after all the effort you like it! Also am very glad to see him getting some love on the show, he makes such great stuff.
@@ThatPedalShow Well actually I'm stuck at home with my leg in a brace having had knee surgery... but this will pass. Hopefully get to see the B-Custom put through a wider set of its paces on a New Pedal Day at some point - such a different set of characters than other o/d's I've played. Anyway, am pumped (see what I did there?) that you're enjoying it!
You guys should demonstrate the Pat Metheny thing - modulated delays (NOT chorus) on the left and right, and a longer unmodulated delay in the center amp.
Because you have a dual amp setup going on, your goal seems to be achieve width. Most evident with the DC-2W, which you're only using on settings 3 and 4. I find that the DC-2W to be a really subtle effect, almost an always-on effect, when used on 1, 2, or 1+2 settings in mono. It really is a stunning pedal - chorus is where the magic happens in guitar for me. Also have CE-2, BF-2, and have owned a Mobius (too much going on there, but sounded great), and I have an MM-4 somewhere too, but I started with an Aria Flanger in the late 80s which could make great chorus sounds too. All of this because of Alex Lifeson 😊
Great show, guys.I’m still hoarding my CE-1,which to me still is the best.Had a CE-3,which tone-sucked a bunch and currently have the TC Corona(with Dans Tone Print)should the occasion call. Mostly, though,I want to congratulate Dan on his wise purchase of the Tone Pump(the Tone Press is his compressor).Dave’s pedals are just so good!
Great show as usual, and lovely to see something from the master that is Dave Barber. It’s a fabulous pedal and the first of its kind when it was originally released. The Gain Changer SR and Direct Drive are also classics.
Sensational playing there towards the end, Dan. And Mick sneaked Learn to Fly in, the verse parts of which are my go-to (along with 2 of Keith Scott’s chorusy intros) for testing chorus pedals. Well done chapsters.
It's interesting that the pedals in the dry signal are isolated only for that Amp/ signal path. All the diagrams online (without a G2/G3) I've seen have the dry effects in the initial signal, prior to the split. This demo hits the sweet spot ✔️ rock'on you pair of lunatics ❤️🏆🤩
When recording and mixing into a song where you want to avoid the “center stage” density from kick, bass, and vocal all placed there, if you mix left side = L100 and right side = L20, you’ll get the guitar at left 60% and still have a wide effect, not like the collapse into dual mono.
I have never been particulary fond of the SCF although it is a very respected pedal and today I have probably understood why. It was illuminating. That DC-2w is a very special pedal indeed.
Can we just take a minute to appreciate how cleaaaan that board looks? Looks so good!

Used to hate chorus because of the de-tuned sound, now I love it for the added depth of tone
You have expanded my auricle boundaries! Thanks Guys!
Scf gold is awesome
Every time I hear the Free The Tone Delay on your show I think this would be a great add on the board.
1. Headphones enhances this episode. 2. Nothing wrong with reminding those of us who love the show how the show is funded so we can continue to enjoy it.
What a magical episode again guys, kudos! Very educational and professional approach, you're the best!
“Dan Schwang” is everything, wild playing!
Beautiful episode, boys!!! I so love W-D-W! I see it as a sort of Mid/Side for a live rig. Fat, big, spatial, airy.
Hey Folks! Thsnks the show!
like i mentioned before an episode on the MERIS LVX would be great!!!!
thank you!
Greatings from Germany!
DC-2W HUGE Sound with that Bassbreaker plus the stereo!!!!
Oh my gosh , Love Love the Chorus Stuff ! Loved it in the day and now .
Beautiful stuff gentlemen, easy just to close your eyes for a min and enjoy the gorgeous chorus tones. Inspired playing!
I have an old danelectro stereo chorus that’s just perfect its been on countless gigs 18V the only pedal that has stayed through out the pedals that have come and gone. Great stuff between a Carr Telstar and a Morgan its just it. Love TPS my go to on anything guitar thanks for all your hard work.
this inspired me to build a very simple dimension-c-type thing in max, lush! just had a lot of fun playing on it.
I love seeing the Tone Press! I have a green one of and love it. I have figured out I like vibrato more than chorus usually. There are some super inspiring sounds here though!
Somewhere in the distance I can hear a chorus of approval 🎸👍😉
Best episode you guys have done. Awesome sounds. Doyle Bramhall on Dogs with Waters very similar tone and my favourite of all time. Thank you guys, keep up the good work, gives me a nice distraction when I’m in too much pain to play. 🙏
Awesome episode. Please, make a part two adding the trichorus thing.
Agree on the Barber pedals = incredible.
Aaaaand I just got a MIJ CE-2 to try too. But I suspect I’ll prefer the stereo CS9.
Thanks so much Tim, yes, Tone Pump, my bad. Anyway, it’s on the board now and sounding epic! Hope you’re awesome matey 🤗🙏
@@ThatPedalShow PS Can you make it sound like a Bad Monkey?
You guys should demonstrate the Pat Metheny thing - modulated delays (NOT chorus) on the left and right, and a longer unmodulated delay in the center amp.
Cool new amp setup. I can see you like the JTM45 sound, as do I.
All of this because of Alex Lifeson 😊
this was a great episode to help me realize I've been wearing my headphones backwards for a couple weeks
Hahah
The TC Chorus is my favorite of all time!
Sounds at the end are immense
Great show, guys.I’m still hoarding my CE-1,which to me still is the best.Had a CE-3,which tone-sucked a bunch and currently have the TC Corona(with Dans Tone Print)should the occasion call.
Mostly, though,I want to congratulate Dan on his wise purchase of the Tone Pump(the Tone Press is his compressor).Dave’s pedals are just so good!
This is why I love my 1988 Fender stereo / chorus Princeton reverb amp, it covers all this and more
too bad it’s not a tube amp
Great show as usual, and lovely to see something from the master that is Dave Barber. It’s a fabulous pedal and the first of its kind when it was originally released. The Gain Changer SR and Direct Drive are also classics.
I'm really impressed by the build quality of his pedals. Even though I build a lot of my pedals, I may give a couple of his a try...
@@cpk313 They’re stellar, and the option to have custom versions is great.
I have a small fry. Killer drive and build quality is second to none
Thanks guys, that was epic. Wonderful playing. Need a chorus pedal now. 👍🏻😀
Incredible show gents, You continue to inspire !
