@@sabi57 Hey Sabi. Everything I'm going to write is my 2 cents, so take that into consideration. I'm not writing gospel here. I'm a tools guy, and I feel cameras are just tools. Everyone needs to find the right one that works for them, that does the tasks they need to accomplish. I picked up the Z6 because I wanted to get more into video, and right now the Z6 fills my video needs well. My favorite Nikon for my needs is the D850. Love that thing. I don't have experience with the D500, but from all accounts it's definitely a great sports wildlife camera. If I were making a living shooting sports day in and day out, I'd most certainly own a body, like the D500, perhaps or a D4 or D5. I find the D850 pretty capable for action even with the huge file sizes. Once planet Earth goes back to normal, 'm looking to create some online content with my Z6 with a friend of mine who does digital marketing for brands, and that's another reason I opted to add a Z6. Regarding the Version 3.0 firmware, I like how it made subject tracking less clunky to operate. I do fine that eye detect is better than V 1.0. Animal eye detect on my Z6 is utterly and completely useless. I've seen videos of it working for others. All it does is put a giant yellow box around the entire head of any of my dogs. I'd venture to say the D500 is still a better action/wild life camera when it comes to focus accuracy and the percentage of keepers. I can only speak to Nikon cameras, but their mirrorless kit, is pretty good for a first attempt and their mirror-less definitely works, or feels like it has a different workflow that using a DSLR. I'd chalk that up to the EVF and how it works. Pros and cons to OVF vs EVF. I can say that I didn't like EVF at first for astro photography, but then, the focus peaking option made it more enjoyable and I now prefer it a bit more. Hope that helps. Again, this is just one dude's experience.
I have never considered purchasing a photography course and presets before, but ever since I found your channel in January 2020, my passion for photography has once again been supercharged through yours. You're by far my favorite portrait photographer on TH-cam. Keep doing what you're doing, Manny. You have incredible talent!
Manny just a quick note: you again forgot to use the fully mechanical shutter. This setting gave you the "not perfect" bokeh, I can already tell. The setting you need on the EOS R to avoid the bokeh-distortion from the semi-electronic shutter is this: Silent LV Shoot - Disable Red menu -> 6th page. When the sun came out and your shutter went to 1/8000, I could tell immediately on the pictures.
I had the Sony a7ii and a7iii. I couldn’t switch to the Nikon Z6 fast enough. The viewfinder and lcd screen on the Nikon are sooooo much better. Once the firmware updated on the Z6 I switched and not looking back. The Sony cams are way too fragile too. Using the Z6 for weddings and portraits and loving it. I tricky situations I simply use the center button yellow box focusing to track the subject. Done.
@@viperstinger77 it is called unnecessary even you are not going to carry two bulky camera bodies and lenses for overlapping functionality. Tell me one thing Sony system can not deliver one has to buy canon RF system for. Imagine carrying a Sigma 35F1.2 with A7R4 plus a RF 85F1.2 with EOS R for a portraits shoot just for the half a stop of light. Or Canon RF 70-200 with EOS R and Sony 24-70GM with A7R4 just for the non internal zoom of RF70-200 to save space in bag. what's the point?
I find the eye-autofocus of my Nikonn Z6 pretty good and hardly find it focusing on the background. Did you use the latest firmware update at the time making the video?
Tomas Ramoska the Nikon are better, but zero inspiring. They don’t have inspiring lenses even in the roadmap. The Canon are very good and innovative line the 24-70 f2.0
Thankfully someone did a video that brought up this subject. I can’t recommend z6 to anyone because the autofocus fails so much. Only if there are more vids and complaints will it be improved. Also it only seems to work from a certain minimum distance. One key I’ve used to get it in focus is to remove the camera from your eye and use touch screen focus to get it going again, but it affects workflow.... Thanks Manny
I don't have eos R, but with canon DSLR you can activate extended ISO on ISO settings to unlock "L" (ISO 50) and H1 (ISO 51.200), H2( ISO 102.400), H3 (ISO 204.800)
Nice that canon steps up their game a bit but I'm not finding the same things you do with it and the 85mm 1.2 lens keeps missing the eye when my A73 don't (at 1.4 though with sigma glass and MC11 adapter compared to native) I hope canon gets a good camera out for these lenses to be of any value!
@@SigurdDecroos yes it was the latest firmware. A Canon loaner even I'm still very disappointed with Canon.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like you are slightly ruining your bokeh by using Silent Shooting Mode 1 on EOS R during daytime shots. It's obvious at 2:15 and at 5:37, where some bokeh balls are fading and out of focus areas are not that smooth. For Mode 1 the EOS R manual says "Defocused image areas may be incomplete when shooting near maximum aperture at high shutter speeds." If you're shooting a shallow depth of field scene with shutter speeds faster than let's say 1/500, you should use Disabled option for Silent Shooting and your bokeh would be much creamier. Unfortunately EOS R does not have an Auto option that would choose this for you (as I believe Nikon does).
I own a Sony a7 iii and I wouldn't say eye af is perfect by any means. My unit tends to front focus in certain situations, I guess no system is flawless, but I wish there was one
On Nikon Z: In Auto Area AF, select OK and a smaller white tracker box will appear, move it to you subject and select, it will then track. Press the Zoom out (-) to remove the tracker to place it on something else. It's not ideal, but very easy to do in a portrait shoot.
You are right in that the Z6 sometimes has trouble picking out the subject, but there is an easy that you can take to lock on to your subject. Hit the OK button and you will get a target in the center of the view finder. You can either move the target to where you want the focus point to be or just move the camera and hit your focus button. The camera will than lock on to your subject. It even works on my small brown Boarder Terrier when she is bouncing around in a mess of fallen brown leaves. I guess it is an extra step. On the lens side. I wish that Nikon had gone with some 1.2 lenses, but I do love the primes they introduced including the 85 1.8.
I went out of my element in a shoot yesterday... so I watched some of your videos to get pumped up and have fun with shooting... it was a pet/owner photoshoot so yeah out of my element. Great video like always!
I think Canon's R system will evolve into something really good, they've got really good lenses and the R is a really good working body. I've shot video on the hottest days inside humid greenhouses and it just keeps on working! I feel confident in buying RF glass as I feel the bodies and their features will continue to improve over time. The lenses are expensive, but the results can be worth the price!
@@joshblank1 The migration back to canon has already started. I kind of feel bad for sony they're at a cross rd. Sony went full bore and gave everyone what canon couldn't. Now the tide is turning. Sony can’t touch the RF lens. Wait until the RF catalog starts to mature, like affordable lens. If Canon stops making EF lens and goes all in with RF, wow
Nikon was kind of stuck with its f mount lenses which they kept from 1952 until now, and they caught up with canon lenses. (Nikon used to make lenses for canon). Now Nikon has new much larger mount; Nikon is the python here as they slowly attracted 5d shooters into d850. If Nikon’s no broke financially they have the technology on glass unlike anyone; for now they are broke.
Manny, being that I am a Z6 and Z7 shooter, that was painful to watch. But sometimes the truth hurts. I agree with you 100%. Nikon, if you are listening, get your shit together. BTW, the opening scene was hilarious!
I have to agree too. I missed a lot of shots that I didn’t missed with die d750... what a shame. And the eye af is... common not really easy to use. It should help not block you.
Manny Ortiz same here ! I have both Z6/7 and it took some time to adjust coming from D850 however, i am used to it now. When that happens (lock on background) i quickly turn camera off and on and it works.. it’s annoying but there is ways around it hoping Nikon listens .. and although i am in love with this Canon Lens (not camera) And i hope i had one for my Nikon but I am also extremely happy with all the Z primes I have and the 24-70 also but we wana talk about primes now.. they are sooooo sharp and so light ! @@goonswarm007 I'm a D750 owner - I wanted to buy a Z6 but it gets such mixed reviews. I'm giving Nikon to April which is my end of financial year to see if they can get the AF up to speed. If they don't I think the R is the camera I'll go for.
As someone who is still trying to decide between both, i dont see having the option to slap a €3500 lens on the camera is a good argument, when being able to spent that much on a lens its not a choice between a eos r or z6 imo, you can easily opt for a z7 or a7r3 or 4 with those kind of funds
Manny I can't believe this, I'm a Sony guy r2, then r3 now the r4. The r4 is the best focus and best eye af I have used, BUTT I randomly said I Wana try canon, got the eosR and got the 85 1.2 and omg everything feels so good. Can you tell me if you noticed you didn't have stabilization. My R4 is using the 85 gm. Can't believe you just made these last 2 videos. I need these
Very cool video, and great pictures. I am no profi, but I enjoy doing pictures and I kind of know a thing or two. Just gonna throw one question, which applies to all the TH-camrs that put so much weight on the focusing issue. What happened with the manual focus, why isn't it more fun to do it yourself than to let an algorithm to do the job? For me, the bigger weight on the choice of your secondary camera would have been the colors and the lenses, not the autofocus. I, myself self own the Z6 and honestly, I am disappointed with it, but not because of the autofocus issue rather the colors that are coming out of the sensor. My old d750 had better colors than the Z6.
Hey Manny! Thank you for everything you do! Im literally driving myself crazy trying to decide which camera system to buy into. I own the Nikon Z6, but I am losing faith in Nikon with every passing quarter. I have the ability to hedge my bets a little and buy into another system, but I cannot decide between Sony or Canon. So many strengths to both but almost every strength is countered by a weakness somewhere else. AHHHHH
Lenses are a very good reason to choose one system over another. However, I believe the f1.2 primes from Nikon are coming and they will also be stellar. Autofocus will undoubtedly improve in all systems. If one can't get great results from any modern camera and lens, it reflects more on their skills than the quality of the equipment.
I'm 2:14 into the video and I have no idea what components or camera you are using. Can you please be more specific when making the videos for people who don't own all of this equipment? You mumbled something about an 81-2 in the beginning, that's all I heard? I'm assuming you're talking about a 1.2 80mm Canon lens on the EOS-R?
Hey Manny! Question, what does your typical winter in Chicago consist of? Chicago winters can be brutal, do you still go out and shoot? Shoot inside? Take a break? Thanks and appreciate everything you do for us. 🙏🏽
OK, I'm not trolling and I'm not a 'fanboy' of Canon or Sony (proud Olympus owner, waiting for the company to shut down on me :D ) but these pictures look better than anything I saw on your channel when you were shooting only Sony. There is something about them! It's either the lens, your editing is different, maybe both... these are gorgeous!
Another nice video but Manny, why are you staying with Sony as your main? As portrait photographers, the two most important things are lenses and colors, Canon slays Sony on both. That lens is a beast. Lenses are more important than camera bodies and Sony has nothing that can touch the Canon f/1.2 primes. I even prefer my RP to the a7iii that I sold when I went back to Canon. The RF 24-70 f/2.8 is also better than the Sony GM 24-70 f/2.8 Its sharper and focusses faster.
Hi , I’m looking at both the Eos R and Nikon Z5 or Z6 . Which in your opinion has the most pleasant out of camera JPEGs , colours etc? Reason I ask is many of my clients want fast images without any processing etc thanks 🙏
Great summary video. Being a Nikon shooter myself, I have to admit... Cañon is bussing out the glass! Beautiful lenses with beautiful results. The EOS R’s camera body is nice as well.
I am currently using the Sigma Art 85mm 1.4 because I have been shooting with a 5DMIV. Have you tried that lens to make any comparisons between the two? I can imaging the Canon RF will be better but that is a pretty big jump. I am wondering if the expense is worth it right now.
Hey Manny, the Exposure Triangle can be kind of tricky with wide aperature lenses, wide open in bright sunlight. Try using a Variable ND Filter. I purchased a Jongsun 77mm S-Pro MRC Variable ND from Amazon and it is excellent, NO image softening or color cast to the image, and allows me to shoot wide open with my F1.2's and F1.4's on bright days, even with strobe. It even has a little lever that allows you to adjust it on the fly with your free hand.
Can you please make a video or give a statement to the RP, because a lot changed with the new firmware and I think most people underrate the RP only because it was released without 24p. So it would be very interesting to hear your opinion and also if you can recommend the camera now with the "new specs".
I am torn between the nikon d750 and the sony a7iii after my nikon d3100. The price difference is an issue and the fact that i still have to buy lenses is just too much. the fact that i already have the nikon 50mm f1.8 and the preice difference between the two cameras makes me lean more towards the d750. but i feel like the sony a 7iii is the future and the d750 is too old. ANY ADVICE?
Manny Ortiz what about the colors? The only thing I still don’t like at my A7III is the color rendition. I shot RAW but many times I spend more time then I’d like to tweaking it. Let me know your thoughts.
You are the source of those little details on eye AF. It's interesting to hear those details and how consistent each system is for your use cases. Great job!
Man awesome video as usual. I think these shots are one of the best ones you have ever taken so far. The quality and colors are amazing (specially the colors). Super sharp and creamy. Great work!
As usual always great insight and work from you. I however am a Nikon fan over Canon for many reasons. 2 of which is DR & Low Light, the combination of Sony Sensors and the Nikon processing engine is a very tough combo to beat. That said, high quality equipment is everywhere today. Thanks for the video. Good stuff.
You’re almost there Manny. :) lol come on home to Canon. Canon has something that no other mirrorless camera has, in manual mode it still does face and eye detection. As long as the lens provides exif information to camera this feature works. Even with EF lenses with the adapter. I’m getting ready to purchase the Irix dragonfly 150mm f2.8 Macro lens. It’s a manual focus lens only.
Yeah, but lack of IBIS makes it harder to shoot at lower shutter speeds , plus these lenses are noisy and much slower at focusing because of the amount of glass to move, not good for video. Beautiful system but with it's own problems.
Hey Manny! Interesting point of view! I'm a Nikon fanboy but I have 0 hands on time with the z6 so I can't say anything. Any thoughts on the Noct? Any plans to test it out or get a video up on it?
I haven’t experienced most of what you described since the last firmware update. I wonder if you have that installed or not? I shoot primarily in low light studio environments as well.
I used d7500. The same happened to me all the time. The stupid cam's autofocus always locks on the backgrounds even with a person standing in front of you the whole time. Bad for shooting portraits I guess

The setting you need on the EOS R to avoid the bokeh-distortion from the semi-electronic shutter is this:
Silent LV Shoot - Disable
Red menu -> 6th page.
Done.
Still happy with the Z6? 1st gen?
Re-watching this just for Gabby. Good God.
Jimmy James yes!

Thirsty ass guys who will never get loyal women because you’re always slobs
I'm not a Canon shooter, but that shot at 6:23 is absolutely amazing! How far from the model were you Manny? Great shot!!
Manny might be the 85mm king right now.
Buying into two mirrorless systems is crazy. Carrying more than 1RF lenses for outdoor shooting is heavy duty work
Frank, I carry the canon 70-200 every day maybe you need to go to the gym. Manny is a beast with lean muscles.
You're weak
Lol the wink from the EoS R gets me every time. So smooth
I find the eye-autofocus of my Nikonn Z6 pretty good and hardly find it focusing on the background. Did you use the latest firmware update at the time making the video?
Canon expertise in making glass really showing off. RF lenses are truly amazing..
The Nikon Z lenses are no slouch so far either...
@@dgevert the noct is insane
Tomas Ramoska the Nikon are better, but zero inspiring. They don’t have inspiring lenses even in the roadmap. The Canon are very good and innovative line the 24-70 f2.0
Yep , just a little pricey though .
Depends on the amount of k that you are able to spend.
The Canon EOS R can shoot with ISO under 100. You just have to enable it in the settings.
For real? Let me check but that should be something that should just be an option
I was about to type the same thing
I don't have eos R, but with canon DSLR you can activate extended ISO on ISO settings to unlock "L" (ISO 50) and H1 (ISO 51.200), H2( ISO 102.400), H3 (ISO 204.800)
Yea but it's not a native ISO 50
it's not native ISO value hence lower dynamic range
Nice that canon steps up their game a bit but I'm not finding the same things you do with it and the 85mm 1.2 lens keeps missing the eye when my A73 don't (at 1.4 though with sigma glass and MC11 adapter compared to native) I hope canon gets a good camera out for these lenses to be of any value!
You got the latest firmware on your EOS R? I have the same lens and it nails it quite a lot
For Mode 1 the EOS R manual says "Defocused image areas may be incomplete when shooting near maximum aperture at high shutter speeds."
If you're shooting a shallow depth of field scene with shutter speeds faster than let's say 1/500, you should use Disabled option for Silent Shooting and your bokeh would be much creamier. Unfortunately EOS R does not have an Auto option that would choose this for you (as I believe Nikon does).
Kind of love the new energy the Sony guys are giving my R.
you said canon is Number 2 which camera is Number 1, thanks
The R is my main camera. It can shoot at iso 50 you have to adjust the range in settings
How much are you getting in focus at f1.2? Very little, can you put up full rez jpegs to have a look at?
I own a Sony a7 iii and I wouldn't say eye af is perfect by any means. My unit tends to front focus in certain situations, I guess no system is flawless, but I wish there was one
On Nikon Z: In Auto Area AF, select OK and a smaller white tracker box will appear, move it to you subject and select, it will then track. Press the Zoom out (-) to remove the tracker to place it on something else. It's not ideal, but very easy to do in a portrait shoot.
Nikon will release 1.2 glass though....and you can use all the f mount lenses as well.
@ 2:25 I don't get it, why couldn't you shoot with a much higher shutter speed ?
You can go to ISO 50 in the EOS R Manny
I went out of my element in a shoot yesterday... so I watched some of your videos to get pumped up and have fun with shooting... it was a pet/owner photoshoot so yeah out of my element.
Great video like always!
6:35 "It's ok, they're good, it's just they're...not inspiring or anything..." *boom* Manny that was cold XD
Manny, this is probably the best 85mm street natural light portrait shoot I've ever seen. Awesome!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone
I can see some solid affordable RF lens in the future too. Canon is going to eat Sony lunch next few years
@@joshblank1 And Sony will be doing what in the next few years, just sitting around?
@@joshblank1 The migration back to canon has already started. I kind of feel bad for sony they're at a cross rd. Sony went full bore and gave everyone what canon couldn't. Now the tide is turning. Canon is like a python slow to act suss out the prey, bounce and slowly squeezes the living daylight out of them
Sony can’t touch the RF lens.
Thanks for being objective. Is the camera had great reliable AF, I would have already purchased one. Best ergos and evf that I’ve used
I have to agree too.
So I prefer that small and light over a little more light .. i would still buy a $3000 Z lens if they released one 1.2 of course .. best of luck Manny you rock
UXO22 , agree, pls see also my comment posted 2 minutes ago...
@@goonswarm007 I'm a D750 owner - I wanted to buy a Z6 but it gets such mixed reviews. I'm giving Nikon to April which is my end of financial year to see if they can get the AF up to speed. If they don't I think the R is the camera I'll go for.
EOS R feels best in hand in comparison to z6, 7 or the a7, 9. The overall handling of EOS R feels reassuring and confidence giving.
As someone who is still trying to decide between both, i dont see having the option to slap a €3500 lens on the camera is a good argument, when being able to spent that much on a lens its not a choice between a eos r or z6 imo, you can easily opt for a z7 or a7r3 or 4 with those kind of funds
iso 100? man you should extend to iso 50, i already got it in mine.
Many, your video chops are getting good man! Nice vid.
if we compare 4K movie with full-frame I think Nikon wins, the only downside is Nikon doesn't have the flipping screen. The Canon EOS R crops 4k!
Bruh the edit on this one is HILARIOUS.
Don’t know who did this one- but Manny’s vids keep getting better
You can get it to go to iso 50 but you have to go digging around the settings to find it and enable it
Manny I can't believe this, I'm a Sony guy r2, then r3 now the r4.
What do you think of Nikon firmware v3.0? Have they solved their autofocus problems?!
AHHHHH
I also have the z6 and a Canon eos r haven't had any lenses for my Canon but am thinking of switching
My eos r takes amazing shoots and it's just reliable
When Manny shows up, I watch. (and not just for the beautiful models)
But all I want to do is shoot 4K without a crop so Nikon Z6 it is. Was that fixed in the firmware update?
OK, I'm not trolling and I'm not a 'fanboy' of Canon or Sony (proud Olympus owner, waiting for the company to shut down on me :D ) but these pictures look better than anything I saw on your channel when you were shooting only Sony. There is something about them! It's either the lens, your editing is different, maybe both... these are gorgeous!
Awesome shoot!!!
Thanks, Manny! What about the other Canon 85, 1.2 DS?
Which new RF lens would you consider buying first? 15-35mm, 24-70mm, 85mm?
This is totally different from my personal experience with z6. Why don't you choose AFC over AFS? which is way much better.
At 2:25 you’re holding the camera quite odd? Is it because of the weight of the lens?
Hi , I’m looking at both the Eos R and Nikon Z5 or Z6 . Which in your opinion has the most pleasant out of camera JPEGs , colours etc? Reason I ask is many of my clients want fast images without any processing etc thanks 🙏
Great summary video. Being a Nikon shooter myself, I have to admit... Cañon is bussing out the glass! Beautiful lenses with beautiful results. The EOS R’s camera body is nice as well.
There are two 85 mm - which are you using? the $2.9k?
I am currently using the Sigma Art 85mm 1.4 because I have been shooting with a 5DMIV. Have you tried that lens to make any comparisons between the two? I can imaging the Canon RF will be better but that is a pretty big jump. I am wondering if the expense is worth it right now.
To solve your overexposure problem, would you suggest simply using an ND filter or the adapter that comes with an ND filter for the EOS R?
Crazy how people went from hating on the canon to everyone using it. Good thing or a bad thing is up to you
Iso less than 100?? Why not speed up exposure??? Stop down and leave it at F1.2. Please answer ❓❓❓❓
Another great vid👍 The merch link didn't take me to your merch... just the suppliers page.
Your test is not fair, because lens aperture is not same, this video you use the Canon always on Sunshine area ,but Z6 always in the pool area
Loved every single one of those photos Manny.
Great video also.
Looking forward to the Canon vs Sony 85m glasses battle.
Just buy rf adapter with nd filters and you will not have problems to shoot at f1.2... :)
ANY ADVICE?
The eos r is still the same price as a Sony ar7 IV in Australia so no point getting eos r over sony, correct?

Manny seriously, you say in the film that you would like the iso to be lower than 100. Have you already read the specifications ???
Canon has dope glass. Can’t wait to see the next EOS R
It has expensive glass..
Great video Manny! These shots are awesome!
Just discovered your channel and binge watched 10 of your videos. Love them. Where do you get all the great meme clips?
What camera bag are you using? It looks dope
I like Manny. He keeps it real. Show Your Love, Manny!
maybe you can try sigma 35 1.2 for sony
I used d7500. The same happened to me all the time. The stupid cam's autofocus always locks on the backgrounds even with a person standing in front of you the whole time. Bad for shooting portraits I guess
You can use L ISO on canon. It actually drops the ISO to 50, but it’s not native.
