18 STI POV Drive: How to prevent ringland failure and knocking on Subaru STI and EJ engines

  • Made a quick POV drive vid with 18 STi and the potential ringland issue everyone is concerned over. After hours of research, I've noticed patterns in those who's engines exploded. Here is my conclusion and how to prevent it.
    Also a good video to show how the Invidia R400 catback sounds (windows down, catback only). I apologize if it's hard to hear, but that's why! A very high quality / bassy exhaust tone. I love it.

    I'd like to mention that MAP performance offers a stage 2+. They have their map intake, downpipe, and a tune for both. Cobb does not have that option. Obviously that is the max, after that you need to upgrade the injectors. But 300+ whp/torque is a great place to be at with an STi.

    Great video buddy, couldn’t agree more 👍 I’ve just had my third oil change on my 18 STI and it’s now done 7800 miles. I run 99 Ron (95octane) fuel always and have set my rev limiter to 4500rpm, I personally think there is no need to rev it to 6900rpm. Going stage 2 in February and not having a cold air intake, no need like you say, as stock air box is the best and safest 👍

    What people do as well is on cold start sit at idle for 5min and thats actually doing more damage. You should start up wait for all the lights to go out and then drive normally by not going above 3rpm until reaching operating temp. The engine will warm up quicker by doing that then sitting at idle.

  • @emartinezr

    Your octane description is wrong. The car requires 91 octane, and prefers 93. So 91 is the minimum, but 93 will give the best performance. Problem with 91 is that if for some reason you get a bad batch, or your fuel goes too long in your tank, etc etc then you're putting the car at risk...

    • @BarryMaskell
      @BarryMaskell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Running 91 in your european cars will stuff them minimum 95

  • @gameface6091
    @gameface6091 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'd really prefer 93 octane, but it is absolutely NOT available where I'm at. It is NOT required by Subaru. Premium fuel is required. I live at about 5000ft elevation. The air is thinner here, so the way 91 octane works here is better for the engine than 93 octane is in New York, or anywhere else at sea level. I'd still love higher octane for even more insurance against engine knock, but I'm not causing any issues using 91 octane at my elevation.

    The term "warranty voided" is not how it works. Warranties DO NOT get voided. Warranty coverage for specific issues can be denied if it can be shown that YOU caused the issue by running aftermarket parts, did an aftermarket tune, etc. That is denied coverage, not voided warranty.

    The flaws in these enginese probably can only be abated and not avoid as originally built. Changing the oil early may help. Using the recommended octane will help. Not running a non-OEM engine map with the additional stresses it creates helps. Letting the engine reach fully operating temperature before using the full power range helps. Letting the engine cool down after use helps. Nonetheless, these engines will continue to have failures until the engineered in issues are addressed by Subaru or aftermarket engine builders.

  • @djteako
    @djteako 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes its an older video, but you only just barely touched on the number 1 reason for headgasket and ringland failure in these engines. people NEED to realise, that their intercooler does not even begin to function until around 50 km/hr (35 M/hr for you americans) Doing launches, parking lot drifting, pulling trailers ,etc etc - anything that puts you into boost, without first travelling at min speed, will cause your air intake temp to skyrocket, and thus cuase either/both pre-detonation and over pressure in the cylinders - thus causing internal damage. The next biggest reason for the engine failures, is slapping on a bunch of "bolt on" modds,but not doing the internals. People HAVE to remember that Subies are a budget car, and therefore were built to handle the factory power only. There was no "overbuilding" done, to keep the price down. it is fine to do a bunch of modds to the car, just make sure you start at the bottom - not the top!!!!!

      it's not recommended to run even a K&N filter without a tune. This is true. It will effect the air / fuel ratios and timing, hurting the engine over time. This is why most people blow up their STIs / 2.5Ls. They run shit gas and drop in filters or intakes w/o tunes

    • @defaultdaniel
      @defaultdaniel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally wouldn't risk it long term. I've read a few reports where tuners tested the new STI engines, and said they saw significant knock occurences in 91 oct and lower vs 93 oct. The car is meant to run off 93 oct, especially when it's hot out. If you must, you can always add some octane booster or get it tuned to 91 oct. Truthfully I wouldn't want to do either to a brand new car. Or you can just find the best quality 91, drive it, have a good warranty, and keep it stock.
