Great video. Only thing I would disagree with is the letting your car idle for long periods of time. Most wear occurs during cold starts. The longer your car takes to warm up, the longer you are in that wear zone. Idling your car takes longer for the oil to heat up and properly lubricate. The general rule is let your car warm up for 30 to 60 seconds and then drive. Drive conservatively and don't go into boost until oil temp is up to operational temps.
We get temps of -35 degrees celsius here and it would take at least 20 minutes of idling to get it near operating temps. On cold days like that 60 seconds is more than enough to get the oil moving through the motor. 5 minutes of conservative driving and your car is at operating temperatures.

I agree 5 min on a really cold day is more then enough. 2 min on a normal hot day and just drive low rpm and stay away from boost and ur fine. Synthetic oil heats up quick. 20 min ur just burning gas
I agree reason to stay out of boost is the theory of the metal of the turbo expanding under heat and giving more room to the rotor correct?

+Evan Shanks fact, using higher octane gas will not doing anything for you engine if it isn't rated for it. If you car takes 87, use 87. It is easy to over octane an engine and cause pre Ignition, doesn't happen often but is possible.

Great video and good tips. Ringland failure is such a common problem with subarus that even your guys that keep up and stay on top of everything still have Ringland failure.

+JD JoyrideTV i would imagine that ringland failrue is more on the newer EJ25 motors since everone that ive talked to with baja tubros, forester XT's and Outback Turbos havent had ringland failure

Hey man, wanna let you know, a major cause of cylinder four ring land failure is due to an improper tune. The fuel delivery to cylinder four was running lean the closer you get to fuel cut, a ECM update from Subaru helped eliminate that, but that didnt always trickle down to Tune shops, not in all cases but it was pretty common,

That bit about mashing the throttle in high gears, good tip. Some people in the Focus ST community don't understand this and get a nice repair bill or at least have to go get warranty work.

Imho best preventative mod is parallel fuel rails ....you don't even have to buy new ...you can just source a second factory fuel regulator and some fuel hose... then you can just add 2 y-splits one pre / one post fuel rails.

bigger injectors
Bosch coils
(Obviously Get 3 inch turbo back / CA intake - but forget the equal length headers... ive been there , waste of money)
Add some boost and get it tuned.
Excedy HD clutch & lightened flywheel.
Short shift kit.
Big ass brembos
then you can look at intercoolers and a bigger turbo
Then you start throwing money into suspension
Then your wife gets really pissed off.
Then you buy a motorbike instead.

I've owned my '02 WRX since it had 75 miles on it, and I have some complaints... but nothing close to millions. Personally:
- Every rock that hit the stock windshield = chip
- stock brake rotors had to be turned 2 or 3 times before the warranty ran out (and I replaced them)
- clearcoat came off the hood (intercooler) scoop first, then the rest of the car later 😄
- Shop manuals cost $500
- The high and low beams are integrated into 1 headlight assembly (i.e. overdrive issues)
- fat, ugly spoiler
- body panels so thin and flexible that you dare not sit on them! 😆
- No ability to turn the radio on without turning on the entire electrical system (unlike GM's cars... Hey, they do, do something good! 😅)
- tiny foot pedals
- catalytic convertor installed in front of the turbocharger (if it fails, it'll blow right into the turbo fans)
Other than that, I absolutely love it! I get to go on a roller coaster ride every time I leave the house! 🤣

I've got a 2016 STI and the first I brought was a catch can. After 5000+ miles not a single drop of oil in the can. I spoke to the uk's largest Subaru turner and they informed me that a catch can or AOS is pointless and a waste of money on a stock STI. However, they said you only need one if you decide to get a more aggressive tune or larger turbo etc. So don't waste your money, I proved this myself and took mine off after 5000 miles. Hope this helps you guys. Stage 2 onwards get a catch can. Stock cars not needed.

Dr. Tautology no worries hope it helps, I also tested the Injen cold intake and put it on the dump. Although the car made more power it was dangerously lean and so I took it off straight away. Alway, get a tune if you install a cai 👍
Truth with EL headers and downpipe! No one ever believed me about that finally someone who understands lol
The coolant mod is also Important. Make sure you get the oil separator. And if u really love the subi rumble get aftermarket headers that flow more freely on the drivers side head (cyl 2&4)
Maybe if you are running high boost and running the car hard. If you just drive it around normally and get on it every now and then. No need for either of those thing.

I learned my lesson, I have to buy a engine rebuild kit for my legacy gt now. I was a total noob and used mostly 87 for gas and I didn't have a good enough job to afford the good stuff most the time and thought it wouldn't make a difference:( thank God for this video honestly

You can keep unequal length headers and get a cylinder 4 coolant mod.
use shell v power and blend about 5% e85 ethanol to every tank. The ethanol is great to prevent knock while not requiring a new tune.

EJ255 and 257 engines are like the old mazda rotary engines of the past. Can make a heap of power, but somewhat sensitive and fragile.
Catch cans and an accessport should be the the first two mods you do IMO. Its amazing how much junk catch cans can stop from going into your motor. EL headers FTW! Subie rumble = death haha

Definitely agree with not flooring it at low rpms because I was wide open in fourth then shifted to 5th and it was at about 2500 and I ended up getting rid knock and ended up getting a new motor
Agreed. I only run V power Shell 99 or in an emergency Tesco 99 petrol in my Forester Sti.

good video dude. i had a 2005 legacy gt. notorious for blown motors. i went through 2 motors i hated it.
i had a access port on it and i found that it added to the oil consumption.
after running the motor too lean, intake install, clearly my fault it gave out.
i bought another legacy 175k no mods no problem.
simple keep it stock it will last forever.
Been there, it's kind of a bummer. I planned on running the stock motor in my '11 wrx for a lot longer than I did. I planned on building the motor anyway but it happened sooner than I thought.

Good tips, except the warming up your car by idling 5-10 mins. It is better for your motor to warm it up running, just keep it below ~3500-4000 rpm. It will warm up faster and in the long run avoid unnecessary wear to the engine.
Not when you have forged internals (in my case). Forged internals take longer to heat up and expand so you can really hurt your motor if you drive it without actually letting it idle. I know it's an extreme case but that's the only reason I said it in the video!
It heats up quicker because it works harder than idling. Oil has 2 numbers, like my oil in my 02 wrx is 5w-40. First number is cold oil viscosity and second number is at full operating temp. So running your motor up until operating temp isn’t very healthy. I warm my car up before I drive and have 225k on stock block and I drive it pretty hard.
Buddy of mine had a manual neon, I swear he never shifted above 2,000 rpm & would lug the hell out of it. No wonder it blew up.

Forged, E85 and aftermarket ECU, no probs with the engine. But the transmission is another story. After all, I've blown only 2 of em. (well, the 2nd one is on it's way going kaboom, but you can tell by the sound) ;)
Would like more info about your aftermarket ECU. I'm bound and determined to own an 08ish STI hatch. Trying to get my head around keeping a built motor running after the stock one goes

@evan shanks this can be said for most turbo cars as well. Focus STs also suffer from this issue.
RIP my EJ257. 2nd motor and I wasn't replacing it again! Easiest way to avoid ringland issues is to buy a LEXUS. What this man doesnt mention is that the EJ257 is very unbalanced and the flat 4 has uneven wear on the rings gravity is the biggest problem. The top of the rings are always starved of oil (especially on startup/warmup) and they will eventually prematurely fail....

Good tips I already knew about warming my car up I never try to drive it cold in weather in 35° and below I’ll let my car warm up about 20 minutes or more. I’m thinking about getting a sti later on this year I hear alot of people being scared of these cars I never hurt any of my cars and I’m not scared to drive a subi everyone has there opinions

my only gripe is leaving your car idling for 5-10minutes. if you cannot drive your car gently for the first 10minutes anyway, you need to practice self control. ontop of that, the transmission does not warm up sitting in the driveway
The "highest octane available" only applies to high compression ratio motors and boosted motors, not all cars just btw for everyone

Ringland is so common I've never met anyone who's had it lol... I feel like it's overstated.
People always talk about gas brands like it matters, but in the end, it's basically all the same government commodity gasoline. The best gas to get is always just the freshest gas, and best way to get fresh gas is honestly to always go to whichever gas station is always the busiest. And the best way to keep any turbo car from blowing up is to avoid manual boost controllers at all cost. Boost at lower RPMs can lead to bending rods and such, so only up the boost if you have a map to go with it.

No mention of e85 or heat soak with a stock radiator? All good tips in the video but from what I know, tuning with e85 and running an upgraded radiator can reduce temps by a lot, reducing the likelihood of ringland failure, etc. Also with e85 you can advance the timing and make a lot more power! Thanks for the video though, a couple things in there I should consider.

I'd like to further elaborate on a topic.
If the engine coolant is at operating temperature, the oil is also at operating temperature. Let me explain.These engines have an oil cooler (heat exchanger) in which the oil and coolant exchange heat but don't physically come in contact. So unless the car doesn't have oil, or the oil pump isn't working, both fluids are at operating temperature. And vice verse, the oil cooler will cool the oil (transfer the excess heat into the coolant where it will ultimately dissipate into the air through the radiator) when you're smashing.
Absolutely agreed! You can tell which of us change our own oil.
the guy in the video says it right but without telling the real reason. You just want to minimize the wear. The value you're interested is viscosity at certain temperature. And different oils have different viscosity levels at different temperatures. You're looking for that sweet spot depending how much you're reving the engine, ie. how hot it gets in the engine compared to how well the viscosity of your oil works at that temperature. subarus are usually driven hard and the heat extractors can't catch up. that's why people include oil temp gauges and usually put higher viscosity grade oils (ie 5w-50 or 10w-40 or 10w-60) to make sure it runs ok in those extreme conditions. And since we know that flooring it at lower rpms damage ring lands on one side and flooring it at higher revs cold wears out everything, I'd say you want the middle ground. 2 mins of heat up before driving, then 10 mins of driving around 3k rpm without boost but at level when you still have enough power to drive around.

Those tips may help but will not address the root of the problem: Subaru's OE ring gaps are way too tight for a turbo engine with a ~4" bore; ring lands break when the top ring gap closes up and the ring seizes to the bore. Most tips like these help because in the end they reduce combustion chamber temperatures and thus the expansion of the compression rings. The best way to stave off ring land failure is to remove the pistons and file-fit the gaps to more appropriate values. And if you're going that far into the engine you might as well put in forged pistons with decent rings and proper ring gaps.

while not everyone is going to have the same experiance, my 2014 wrx cracked a piston/ringland with less than 24k miles on a car i bought new and babied. I had a very reputable shop mod the car to 300whp with a custom 93 tune and put less than 7k miles on the car with the mods and bingo....blew a ringland...now im building the engine right.....but is was a very very expensive lesson.....dont listen to people telling you can do internals for a few thousand dollars...yes it can be done, but that assumes u can do everything urself. My engine build is at $12k parts and labor.
i wish i could get an access port for my baja turbo. and also i wish i had simple bolt on stuff that i could do to my car. thankfully haven't had to get my motor rebuilt yet and im at 174k. i have had to get head gaskets done to my car and also a new tubro but those where above 160K.
