    Too many games that never got ported to other platforms. While the library was not as insane as a PS2, it still has a huge number of great A/B/C-tier games literally locked to the platform.

    • @MCharlesPainting
      @MCharlesPainting 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm upset it didn't get more PS2 games. However, as I move to PS4, I'm upset so many games are locked to PS3, haha. PS3 has a truly great library. If you like the PS library more than Xbox/Nintendo/SEGA, etc., it's likely the best ever. PSP is also great, but the gameplay is not nearly as good due to hardware, though it's portable and looks decent due to tiny screen size, and plays disc movies! Amazing little thing, but it's costly now and difficult to find really high-quality PSP consoles, sadly.
      I really wanted more PS2 and PS3 remasters and remakes on PS4, or just ports. That time has passed, and we are unlikely to see much of that on PS5, too. Other than all the Call of Duty and Resident remakes, of course.
      PS3 is literally a device 'between generations'. Beyond PS2 and below PS4 in terms of library of games and graphics and controls, etc. It's really great, but sadly lacking a little -- which is reasonable. It still has like 2,000 games to offer, some of which are PS3-only!
      I use PS3 most of the time and have since about 2017, as it's my DVD/Blu-ray player, too. I also used it for TH-cam, but that app seems broken now, at least for me. I used to play online for free, too, which was nice. Online severs bad nowadays, though, for many games. They now focus on PS4 and PS5 severs. Even some PS4 online games are trash. It only takes 3 years for Call of Duty severs to be filled with hackers and the games to be unplayable. That's one of the things I hate most about such online games.
      I'll tell you a little secret: if Call of Duty 4 had flawless severs (no lobby hackers, etc.) forever on Xbox 360, I'd likely be playing nothing else, or not much else! I know millions of people still want to play those older CoD games but are forced to move on. I know they made a remastered version, but no nowhere near as good and has its own hacker problems, too. But, it was very popular for a few years.
      I'm just depressed at gaming at this point, so I refuse to go online for anything, ever. I'm going to try play everything offline. Any online game I want or want to keep playing, I just accept the reality and move on. This is true for PS3 and PS4. (I won't ever be buying PS5, I assume.)

Just because it's an old console doesn't mean we shouldn't use it anymore

    • @MCharlesPainting
      @MCharlesPainting 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you like PS3-only games, and PS2 games and PS4 games or PS4-like games, then the PS3 is maybe the best library of all time. Thousands of fairly cheap games, too. That's crazy to think about. I also like how PS3 was maybe the last 'modern' system to actually be fairly silent and functional without overheating (though it can become a problem if you never clean it and don't house it properly). There are some problems with PS3, such as Minecraft, the controller, and original model, etc., but Xbox 360 had major issues and was more costly, overall, at the time.
      It's also a Blu-ray player and has a nice menu system (at least, I like it and the PSP menu).
      PS3 might go down as the greatest console ever. Only reason it's not the highest-selling console of all time is due to a bad start and extremely high price and Xbox 360's Call of Duty mania. Even without just the former issues, I think it would have sold about 100-120 million units, making it about the fourth-best-selling of all time. Without the latter, easily 140-150 million. As it stands, it still sold about 85 million units, which is great.
      P.S. Some Xbox 360 sales are misleading. I know for a fact millions of Xbox users bought 2-3 Xbox 360 consoles over a 10-year period, so it's not like 85 million people bought Xbox 360 consoles. More like 50-60 million players. Of course, PS3 sales are misleading, since some number of millions (?) of people bought them largely for the Blu-ray player and/or free online play. If we also factor in how only a handful of Xbox 360 games were super popular, it's more of a CoD machine than gaming machine. I'm willing to guess that PS3 did 'better', overall.
      You can get a sense of this by looking at best-selling games.
      For Xbox 360, it's Halo, CoD, GTA, Gears of War, Batman, and Fable. Ranging from 3 to 20 million sales.
      For PS3, it's GT 5, Last of Us, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Batman, Final Fantasy, Heavy Rain, LittleBigPlanet, CoD, and GTA IV. Ranging from 3 to 30 million.
      GTA V sold 10 million more copies on PS3 (20 vs. 30 million). Best-selling game by far, and one of best-selling of all time. Maybe due to some influx from Japan (Xbox 360 was tiny there), or simply since the PS GTA fans bought PS3, or since PS3 was a bit more popular than Xbox 360 in Europe. Maybe Europe loves GTA more than America? Maybe Xbox 360 users simply stuck to CoD; hence, fewer players bought GTA V. No idea.
      Sales are stronger for Xbox 360 on top titles, but mostly Call of Duty and Halo. PS3 has many more games that are high-selling, and of various genres and styles. Xbox 360 also had a big push to sell the console bundled with Halo and such, compared with PS3 (though I think Uncharted was a big bundled offer at one point). Both systems also have great exclusive games (possibly better than PS4. Certainly better and more on offer than PS5). I'm guessing, PS5 won't really 'shine' until about 2027, and get many of its best games by then. We'll see how it goes, and if they shift to PS5-only games or PS5 and portable down to PS4 still, and the direction of games (single player vs. live service types, etc.). By then, it will be PS5 Pro and even more powerful tech, but will this really help with game design? Unlikely. PS5 already has a fairly large 60 million unit sales now, though this is very bad for a PS console. It's about halfway through its main life cycle (4 years). It really should have more to show by now, not just upgraded PS4 games and one or two great PS5-only games, and endless live service nonsense.

      @Alex-ng6hc 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @MCharlesPainting The 7th Gen consoles were really a blueprint for what would become the standard for consoles afterwards, serving as multimedia devices in addition to being game consoles.
      I will defend the Xbox 360. Despite the red ring of death hiccup, games were easier to make for the 360's xenon processor, and it brought us the Gears of War series.
      The PS3 was the better console in terms of technical performance, being twice as powerful as the Xbox 360. It was also the first console to have an HDMI port, and continued and introduced some of the best gaming franchises that are still going strong today. Everything that we love about the PS4 and PS5, we owe it all to the PS3

    Personality its my favourite console just edging out the ps2, i think its also the last innovation sony was known for back then, the cell processor was hard to develop for but it paid off in the end.
    Imo ps3 has some of the best explusives which still look fantastic todays, it has my favourite operating system, plus with its vast media support and bluray drive makes it my all time favourite console to date.
    Only sad thing is that the earlier ones which had backwards compatibility with ps2 have a large failure rate so the best one to own is the first gen slim version which play ps1 games but not ps2.
    You can alyways buy an original one and get it moded but sadly they are starting to get rare and expensive, also modding them isn't cheap unless you can do it youself but its not exactly easy.

    I own a PS3 and PS4 and I still play on the older console often.
    The reason for its longevity is basically the fact that it had lots of games including the exclusive titles. People say that PS5 has very little games. Well compared to the PS3 standards even PS4 has not that many exclusive titles. The second and main reason is that these games did not age that bad at all, even when it comes to graphics. Even if some of these games look ugly now, they still are not ugly enough to make the game unplayable like PS2 or PS1 era ones due to very low resolution back then.
    The most important are the game mechanics thou. And they have not changed drastically one bit from 2013. You can even say that almost every game mechanic that is in usage now had its roots in the 7th generation of consoles. There hasnt been such a substiantial quality leap like for example in case of PS2 to PS3 transition.
    Therefore the PS3 is still a very potent gaming machine.

      I also hope the PlayStation Store and the online service for the PS3 never shuts down either although eventually, Sony might still decide to pull the plug on the PS3 sooner or later since nothing lasts forever, unfortunately. They almost closed down the PlayStation Store for both the PS3 and PS Vita systems back in 2021, but they reversed their decision to do so after the negative feedback they received from many fans. So far, the PlayStation Store as well as the PSN online service are still active on the PS3 and PS Vita systems for the time being, but I don't know either how much longer they'll probably last. Nintendo already shut down the DSi Shop application for the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL handheld game systems back in 2017 as well as the Wii Shop Channel for the Wii game console back in 2019, and they even just closed down the Nintendo eShop early last year in 2023 for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS game systems. Microsoft will also be shutting down the Xbox 360 Marketplace, or the Xbox 360 Store rather, for the Xbox 360 console later this summer at the end of July from what I've heard.

      But Dark Souls 1... That was a surprise! I've played with many randoms, sometimes even two together, and helped them defeating a lot of bosses.
      Probably it's helped by the humanity system in DS1. You can't become human when you want, only at bonfires, so players leave their summon signs close to the bonfire or on the road to the boss

    Ah yes, PS3, the only console that I'd ever owned in my entire life. Got it for my 18th birthday in 2008 and it has been with me ever since, with intervals since I left to study abroad and didn't get back to it until after I was done. These first few years, I remember I played and beat so many games, that's what made them special to me, considering how many of those on PCs I gave up long before watching the credits. Every single one on PS3 in turn was original, no piracy there, so you dedicated yourself more. Sony had an amazing run of exclusives at that time. So many years I hated myself for never having picked up the original Last of Us (as it came out around the time I left the country and I just didn't have time), but I finally did beat it last year (the very first original version, not a single drop of remastered blood in its veins) and now I'm almost done going through PS2-emulated Revenge of the Sith, of all games (just really felt like trying out that game). Got it off my American account on PS Store that I build 16 years ago, it's amazing how at the time it simply bought on face value that I lived in the US and never tried to verify that, lmao. ☺ Thanks to this, my access to classics is much more robust than it would otherwise be.
    Sadly, it seems to be slowly dying on me, it keeps crashing and dusting it doesn't help. I'd love to try out some other games from PS Store, but I'm just afraid that at some point it simply won't turn on again and I will just never get to finish a game. 😪

    I must say, being able to store photos, videos, and music on the PlayStation 3 was always something I found cool back in the day. I remember I had downloaded the entire anime Kill La Kill, and placed all the episodes on my PlayStation 3 to be able to quickly show my brother episodes whenever he came to visit.
    I also remember I had a photo folder for screenshots of the movie Resident Evil Afterlife. And I would press play slideshow. And then go to music, and press play on Resident Evil Afterlife soundtracks.

    I have another PS3-related question in case if anyone here may happen to know the answer to it too, especially for those who still have or owned one of the CECHE01 models of the PS3 a.k.a. the original 80 GB fat model. Apparently, the first 80 GB model of the PS3 that was released, which was the CECHE01 model, was also backwards compatible with PS2 game discs, but it used software emulation though instead of the actual PS2 hardware chips. I saw something online though from a while back something about if the 80 GB PS3 is connected to the Internet and if it is updated with the latest system firmware update, it apparently removes the backwards compatibility support for PS2 games. Is that really true, or no? I was just wondering since I just thought of asking. I know the 20 GB and 60 GB PS3 models use the actual PS2 hardware chips in them for PS2 backwards compatibility which will never disappear no matter what system firmware update the consoles are on, but I wasn't sure about the 80 GB model though since it only uses software emulation for playing PS2 games. I've had an 80 GB PS3 which was backwards compatible with PS2 game discs, and it even came with the MotorStorm video game too since I got the 80 GB PS3 MotorStorm bundle set, but it only lasted for a few years though before it finally stopped working on me. The system never got the YLOD or anything like that, but the disc drive or the laser must have gone bad or something since the system won't read any discs I insert in the console now, no matter what disc I put in. I also never had it connected to the Internet or anything either since I was still able to play PS2 game discs on it before the system stopped reading them.

    My from JP imported PS3 (CECHA00, in Europe we never had 100% backward compatibility), which meanwhile is a Frankstein with replaced 40nm RSX chip, is the best of "three worlds" I can find. Connected to my Retro TV (40" LCD) it delivers everything I want from the PS1 to PS3 era. I also have PS1 and PS2 permanently hooked up to a Sony CRT, but rarely start one of them. The PS3 does everything really well and thanks to the brilliant PS3 scene you can stay up to the latest firmware and still keep your media on the shelf while playing the backups from hard drive. Win Win in every scenario.

    I got fed up of ps5 and stopped paying for ps plus. went back to ps3 now for free online. I'm a busy man and not always get the chance but I get some random spare time to go on it and had more fun off ps3. I'm cutting back on expenses.

    Be great if Sony made a batch of new PS3 controllers. Opened mine up and cleaned all the pressure strips with IPA, but the aftermarket replacement contact pads for the buttons are a bit rubbish. Put the original pads back in and they work ok, but it would be nice to have some new controllers. Even just a kit of original contacts pads from Sony would be good.

    I just got my PS3 out of the closet where it’s been for the last 10 years. I got it out and hooked it up to make sure it still works. It had an update, so I updated it. I got it out of the closet to sell it. I went on youtube to see what the proper steps are needed to format it to sell. After watching this video, I'm not sure if I want to sell.

    A wonderful console.
    Yesterday i put a SSD on it, it's way faster now.
    Kinda sad some games are still only on PS3 (The first two Littlebigplanet games especially for me).

    I had every chance to get a ps4 or ps5 I still stuck to my ps3 and it’s been the perfect most reliable gaming console I’ve ever had, it’s lasted me more then ten years I have the super slim model it’s been fantastic probably my favourite console the one and only I’d leave with if I had to, after growing up with Nintendo consoles it introduced to a more broader game library I couldn’t have imagined it was also handy knowing yeah this game will definitely be on my PlayStation I respect the third party efforts on Nintendo consoles most always have a catch

    Like you stated, what I love about the ps3 is the games that are on it. The ps3 has an amazing catalog of games that I am very fond of, and I enjoy playing on the original hardware better than an emulator on pc. The ps3 just has a charm to it, might just be nostalgia but that's what I think.

    I play my PS3 about once a month. I don't use it online but it's fun to grab a cheap game or two from the game store from time to time!

    For the record. Only the original fat PS3 model supports PS2 games. And you forgot to mention how the PS3 can play DVD's and Blu-Ray movies. It can also play music CD's and easily copy them on the system. I imagine there's hundreds of thousands users (if not more) who primarily still use the PS3 only to watch their favorite movies and series or play their music.

    My PS3 died after 6 years and I can feel the pain. So many memories. Original AC games, uncharted games, gow games etc.
    The only other route is rpcs3. If you don't have a beast PC, better not even bother with it.

      @@bamban_garcia5562 they are prone to failure again after a while if they go. Plus mine was in a bad condition anyway so it's partly my fault. It had been collecting dust for a while. However, for now I do have. Decent pc that can play ps3 games good and a ps4 for most of the remastered exclusives. I'll have it checked though because it's still a great machine.
