Interesting fact: Beethoven wrote this piece to defy the ‘rules of music’ at the time and so he played the whole song with the pedal down, and only did octave notes with the left hand. He made it simple on purpose, and showed everyone that professionals can make easy pieces beautiful. Without this piece, I doubt many people nowadays would understand that playing is meant for expressing, not showing off.
This is so true...
The way Beethoven could make such a surreal, indescribable masterpiece yet so simple by his standards! I can't get over this composer.
That’s beautiful.
where did you find this information? I can't seem to find anything on the internet that the piece was played using the pedal the whole time.
@@hauaywkos6638 I mean simple is quite a stretch. This song is made up by 3 movements, this is barely the first one. The second movement is a bit more cheery and the third one is a very complex one to play, a lot more like Beethoven's usual style.
This song makes me think of something I once read. “We’re either alone in this universe or we’re not. Both are equally as terrifying”.

I worked summers at a moving company and it was hard work. We'd have a crew of 4-5 dudes of all kinds and we had the best time..probably the best time of my life. We had this one guy who didn't talk much, he'd just politely laugh at our jokes and do his work. One move we had this piano and usually we get the big heavy things first if possible. We get this thing in the house and this guy asks the people "do you mind if I play?" They said no and so he just sits down in this empty house with only a piano and a handful of people on a 110-degree day. He starts to play this song. Moving and swaying to the tune, his back brace un-velcroed and one of his boots untied. We all were frozen. Most of us weren't familiar with classical music, even the 'famous' ones. That moment was 23 years ago and to this day it's one of my fondest memories. That is the power of music.

Every month, all day, every week, for seven years i walked the same road alone to go to school, then eight years to go to work. I've been through any musical experience imaginable, i've listened to all kinds of music as a grew up, but the song my mom loved the most is this one. Next month is my birthday, it's not just any birthday, it's the day she told me when i was a kid that would be the day i would understand what this song means, and she was right all along, because i was here listening to it, and i've realised i knew it all along.
I remember walking up the main street in my city after musical school, it was raining, i was completely soaked, and i was listening to this song. It sounded exactly like this, it felt the same, it was the same. God, i felt so lost, without purpose, i felt like i was being dragged around like the news papers being washed down the street by the water, my experiences and my life were just being forgotten slowly by everyone, no one had bothered to ask what i've done all these years, i was a news journal washing down the drain of life, i felt like everything everyone had ever told me about hope was a lie. All the tests i've ever done, all the presentations, all the science, philosophy, math classes i've been through, it all felt so useless, i've learned all those things, and there were still so many questions in my head that i couldn't get the answer to. I got to class that day so soaked that everyone was staring at me in the reception, they asked why i went to school even though it was raining like that, and i said i didn't knew... because i didn't, and i still don't. I'm without any meaning on my back, there is no answer to the question they asked me, those are the questions not even science or philosophy could answer, and they never stopped coming. Beethoven wrote Moonlight Sonata as an improvised piece, Ludwig Rellstab atributed the first movement of the piece with his vision of moonlight shining down on a lake. Beethoven had questions he couldn't answer, so he wrote them down in hope of someone, one day, finding what they meant, and i am sorry for not being able to answer his questions, just like his question didn't answer mine.
I have a gift for everyone that read this comment, and will read in the future.

A spirit unknown.
Lest he conquers the eyes of an audience,

And is fueled by souls."

What a bummer
I awoke to the sound of someone playing the piano downstairs. It wasn't unusual for Amelia to play late at night. We'd just bought the house, and Amelia loved the piano. But there was something... off about the sound. It was detuned, unlike how it was earlier. I made my way downstairs through the dark and the quiet. When I stepped into the room, there was a little girl sitting at the piano. It wasn't Amelia. The window was partially open, and the bright moonlight shone through the window and made her glow. The song she was playing was full of anguish and it was more intense through the detuned notes. I stood in the doorway, watching her. I was frozen, unable to do anything but watch the girl play anguish in the soft moonlight.

You supposed to be watching the opera my dude
As the world settled around him the man played a song from before
Before the ground shook and the air trembled
Before the sky burned and the houses fell
Before his family huddled under the wreckage
Before his family died under the wreckage
In the empty streets the piano sang, the man giving its voice
The sound lonely and sad, unchanged over the years he played it
Then he would play the last song his mother taught, clumsily and inconsistent but helping him forget
Now he played it in the young forest growing from the debris of his past. The song echoing through the trees slightly taller than him reminding him of his life
Over time animals came back and grew used to the man, they sat still as he played
Many years had passed since the war took them away, but he remembered them through song
As he played, he could see the ghosts of everyone dancing slow and graceful as they bobbed through the air
His brother dancing with his wife, his mom and dad dancing together, and his sister dancing with Benjamin, their baby brother
He could see his neighbors kids tumbling playfully in the air
The elderly couple did their own dances close to the piano
Many years passed and as he brought the song to an end, a single tear ran down his now tan and wrinkled face
The ghosts applauded him cheering his performance
Slouching in his chair the old man smiled, then he sighed, then he died.
40 years later, “mommy, look over there!”
“Hmm?”, mother looked ahead, “oh, a piano.”
The mother and her daughter approached the piano, foliage grown around it and sunken into the ground. The father was trailing behind as their cart was heavy
The mother and girl let out a sharp yelp as they came around the old instrument
“What is it!?” Asked the father as he ran up to them, then he looked at the piano. “Oh!”
Slouched on a weathered chair was a skeleton, propped up but the brambles and ivy climbing it
It’s skeletal hands still resting on the yellow keys

true even if it is not really with the spirit of the music --> no moonlight where there is storm (too much cloud)
my bad, i've just checked wikipedia, and the title "moolight sonata" was given after Beethoven death by a poet. it appears that the theme deals with ghosts haunting a castle "son jeu par Beethoven évoquait, d'après ses assistants, des fantômes traînant leurs chaînes dans un château"
Very haunting when played at slower speeds. Each note is slowly placed into your mind like fitting blocks.

Midnight
It was raining outside
One alone in the rain
Dancing under the moonlight
Problems passing beside them
Loses
Traumas
Drama
Life slowly passing by
Fate in the palm of their hand
As the thunders echoed through the skies
Going along with the music of the rain
Twirling with the sound of thunder
Cars passing by
Befriending the beautiful sound of the water running through the streets
Agony and pain
Forgoten memories
Childhood wasted
Trying for the future
All for what
The one dancing alone
Danced and danced
So the problems would disappear
So the void would be fild with something positive for once
Tears that could not be seen
The one like an angel from above
The light lamps shining on them like they were performing on a stage for everyone to see
But no
Only them and their lost innocence dancing one last time
As the thunder gave the last straw
They bowed
Going back into the dark
Never to be seen again
What was going through their mind
What is going through your mind
And the most important question
That faint smile with tears falling down like a river
Were they happy
Are you happy?

Ive never heard of "detuning" a piano, but I love what it did to the sounds! I've personally loosened the strings on my violin to produce flatter tones, but given the nature of tuning a piano, didn't think it was a thing for that instrument. (Then again, keyboards are amazing things of technology)
Umbra Luna When I moved into my current house, the previous owners left us their piano as it would have been too expensive to move. It sounds a lot like this. Once you get to the higher notes, they begin to sustain themselves longer than usual.
eshock7
The sustain thing is on all pianos. Any note past one of the Gs I think doesn’t have a damper, since it fades out so fast anyways it doesn’t really need one. :)
Wouldn't "detuning" just be letting it fall out of tune? Every time a piano is played, the strings loosen ever so slightly and start to vary very slightly in pitch (when a piano is tuned, each string of a certain note is brought to the same frequency). So instead of the crisp, pure tones you'd get from the two or three strings vibrating at the same frequency, you get a slight wobble in the tone.
It'd basically be playing a fairly old piano that hasn't been touched in a while rather than the notes being flatter than usual.
superfragilisticatexpialidoshmur I mean that’s what mine sounds like. Everything just sounds slightly off. Like a really old saloon piano
@@eshock753 Yeah, it's very stylistic I would say, but I don't think it's something that can be faked on a real piano either

I remember when I was 4, I had a toy that had plenty of buttons that plays different music but weirdly I always push the button that plays Beethoven's moonlight sonata, I was thinking deep with so much thoughts in nursery class while the other kids were playing with one another while I sat at the corner of the classroom with my toy, repeatedly playing the same button... I was going through a lot of childhood trauma even until now, yet here I am listening to this masterpiece over and over, feeling hopelessly empty yet comfortable in the darkness...~
The rain feeds the plants.
The lightning flashes.
The piano scares the bad spirits away.
And you are strong and powerful.
"A man with the world against him finally gets to the end of his life just to realize he has to make everything again"
Delcapra Scalar did you mean Roland Deschain?
There is no dark music for Moonlight Sonata, it's already dark since it's created. If it's not dark, the name would be Sunlight Sonata.
It was not meant to be dark, it is called moonlight sonata because its as beautiful as a full moon shining over a night sky
@@fartnug8088 thank you for this info, I tought it was dark because it sounds "minor" rather than "Major".
@@fartnug8088 moonlight sonata was not made to describe the moonlight, but to describe his feelings after being alone and desperate. its called moonlight because its mesmerising peculiar and dark.
Everybody: This song is drepressive

Me: no. It is wonderful
One time I woke up on a Tuesday morning I think. It was heavily raining outside. I awoke in mental and emotional agony. I felt horrible loss, anguish, guilt and loneliness of what felt like many generations of people before me. I could feel the cries from their losses and remembered my own. Then I snapped back. I was just laying in my bed. It was 9am and my brother was just practicing piano. Playing this song. The amount of power and emotion one song can give is incredible and I will never forget that morning.
The exact atmosphere I want with this piece. I turned the volume up loud because I was leaving my room, but then I kinda forgot to get up. I love when people play Moonlight Sonata with personality, rather than just a flat tempo with no feeling behind it. It's one of my favorites of all time and it really kills me to hear it played without emotion. Great job!
Very smart rendition, very expressive at this perfect tempo. Big thumb up Lucas!
François-Xavier Dubois 👍👍👍👍👍for lucas
That's a perfect music to listen while you are in a space, travelling to distant stars in a ship .. just looking through the Vast Infinite Cosmos .. the darkness within.
how can one write such a masterpiece...a genius so ahead of his time. RIP BEETHOVEN
Truly is a sonata almost like a fantasy...
What sort of fantasy?
imagine this playing as you stand in the hallway of your victorian era holding a torch in the dark watching through the window as the love of your life leaves you never to come back
At sea? Then the Jolly sailor plays
A man with a talent was all alone one day, until he met a woman who he loved very much. Each day he would play a song for her, and she would sway and rejoice as she danced to his music. She smiled and laughed with the man as he kept playing, watching her listen and dance. After a few more meetings, he took his hands in hers and confessed his love, to which she accepted. He pulled her into his arms, and began to play again. Soon they had children after getting married. Years passed and they grew old together, as well as closer, and time took its toll. Their children had grown and moved on. The two had aged, but their love was still just as strong. On one rainy, Grey day the man woke up to find his lover in her rocking chair. He went over, and tried to wake her up, to no avail. He tried once more, and felt tears sting his eyes. She wouldn't wake up. Then he sat at his piano, his hands moving on their own across the keys, and played beautifully, a bittersweet song of sorrow and peace. His best work yet, as a final set off for his life-long love. And today he still sits at the same piano, him and his partner still together.
imagine the moment when you find happiness is the last moment of your life.
And then the wall to my left opens up!!! Revealing a hidden room.
make sure you have the other Crest with you.
I’m surprised I had to go through so many comments to find a RE reference.
This is the most beautiful cover I've heard of this tune. Never thought detuning a piano can make it soo peaceful. Even though it a cover but It felt like one of it kind. I can even feel the cool breeze and smell the rain even though it's summer here! Thanks you for making this beautiful masterpiece. So glad this came to my recommendation.
Total solitude, unrequited love ,hurting in silence then just look numbly at the sky and sink in the trenches of despair & melancholy
This specific recording is one I have gone back to for months. Every time in these past months have been because I needed a break from life and situations. And breaks I received, thank you.
Hope all is good my bro 💖
Somehow.. I find a sense of peace in this piece (with rain in the background). Its so beautiful that I want to learn to play piano just to play this for hours.
Just fantastic Lucas I feel that most people play this too fast and the rubato you put in was very daring but I feel you totally pulled it off I can imagine Beethoven Himself would like your rendition definitely different but fabulous !!
“The truth is... music can be interpreted in many ways.... either it’s the piece itself... the environment it’s in... or it’s the person playing it”
There's a truly haunting and deeply saddening oil painting called Ivan the terrible kills his son and I feel like no other piece of music fits the emotion and anguish that painting gives off except for Moonlight Sonata

I was doing my homework and got distracted watching videos on YT. Then I saw you had uploaded this and I thought: " It's great and I can do my homework at the same time".
Thank you, Master ;)
Rupert Pérez Same just happened to me!
Lucas King has some of the best stuff to listen while doing homework!! It's not to distracting and it's beautiful music :)
I like King's work, not because it's eccentric or bold, but rather, it's calm and pretty. It's great music for meditation or relaxation.
.o. i was writeing a psycho- romance and i stumbled across this chanel. thanks Lucas :D
I was doing Maths at the same time :)
My crisis of realizing that I can’t play the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata by memory or even trying to play by reading the notes after not practicing the piano for over a year has hit me.
The Dark Moonlight Sonata in the rain has totally made me even more morbid,
However it is inspiring me to try to get my chops back so I can play again.
Thank you for the inspiration 👍
Practice makes progress🙏
The image combine with the piano makes me have a feeling like im the last alive of all my friends & loved ones & im just reminiscing about all the time i spent with them before i join them
Listening by my fire place getting lost into the void of crackling flames and symphonies, acknowledging my doubts and ambitions as they flutter further past my ability to reconcile.
Nickoli Kaufman Wow, beautiful word choice
siempreselena thanks, I like to write as it comes naturally though I don't utilize that talent often.
Ahem *pretentious* ahem
when someone says the word utilize instead of use you know they’re trying too hard to speak that way
@@Alfuido when someone comments negatively on someone else's use of "utilize" instead of "use", they are probably jealous.
Sounds exactly like the moonlight sonata played in the very first Resident Evil game. Was my favorite puzzle to solve because of the song.
This version and the one from piano of the forest are always going to be my favorite 😍
I'm just kicking back and enjoying the music as I struggle to fall asleep because of the existential dread of my thoughts, I've lived thousands of lives in my subconscious in this singular minute that it took to write this comment, so anyways, how is your day, random person on the internet?
The craziest part about this piece is, that it sounds different depending on what type of mood you’re in. If you’re happy it sounds totally different than when you are sad.
I’ve smiled large, and also cried hard to this song… amazing.
when everyone tries to do some jokes for April the first... one man.. named Lucas stands and plays us a -suicidal- rainy version of one of the best symphony from our beloved Ludwig Van Beethoven... brilliant !
(anyway thanks lucas for this pretty good interpretation and keep up ;3 you're and always will be one of my favorite compositors ❤)
Matt Smith is the best doctor! :D
You are right, but... its not a symphony ;) "just" piano sonata :)
Lubomira Verbovská oh thank you my dear ;) i assumed it was a symphony but thanks for the correction
No problem :)
so everybody is just gonna ignore the suicidal thing?
*the moon*
A dark gloomy night
As the only light is from the moon lighting up the path I choose
A long walk a slowly taunt
A drifting dance not only a winner
Talking to the moon
In the shaded night dark
"Why do we sleep and not see the beautiful light you give"
The path grows longer and longer as it takes no turn or twist
I wish for love
I wish for a new path
No end to all the madness
No end to all the saddens
This is the first of April
I hope you like it
*thanks for Reading*

I made up every word sometimes I write it in a book, listening to a simple song can give inspiration to a person use that inspiration to inspire over's! 💖
what is "a slowly taunt"? also what is meant by "A drifting dance not only a winner".
It all seems kind of shallow to me.
Frightening beauty is the best kind.
This is one of the most beautiful piano pieces of all time, plus I have listened to it way to many times
Used to work construction, low voltage AC electrical , doing some work in a school during summer me and this guy had to go through a band room with instruments set up everywhere , I mash a couple of piano keys to make some sounds and he laughs sits down dirty tool belt and everything bust out playing this perfectly . I guess anyone can learn to play Just wasn’t expecting that at all 😂
"As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found
"Moonlight Sonata | Rainy Detuned Piano Version"
in his TH-cam recommendations."
When I saw detuned, I was worried for second, but it just meant that it has a looser and more antuiqe sound.
Phew, I seriously thought it meant that it was out of tune. Glad it wasn't. Because it sounds beautiful.

this is exactly how it sounds when i play on my piano normally (probably because our piano hasn’t been tuned in a while 😅). very lovely
When it is detuned it sounds more eerie and depressing than normal. In my opinion on a tuned piano it sounds beautiful and sad. It’s really crazy what effect can be given simply by not tuning your piano...
This is the darkest music I've ever heard. I think this is the best soundtrack of the world. Lucas, your channel is incredible, never give it up ❤
ah, I know darker piano music
