Tartini sold his soul to the devil in a dream of his. He exchanged his soul for the devil to be his servant and teacher. At the end of the music lesson Tartini handed the violin to the devil to see if he could play. The devil started playing with virtuosity; delivering an intense and magnificent performance. Tartini described it like this: "I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke." Mesmerized by the devil’s brilliant and awe-inspiring playing, Tartini immediately attempted to recreate what he had heard. However, despite having said that the sonata was his favorite, Tartini later wrote that it was "so inferior to what I had heard, that if I could have subsisted on other means, I would have broken my violin and abandoned music forever." I can barely imagine how good the actual sonata must have been that he heard the devil play in his dream.

I newly learned about the story of this song. The surprising thing is, when I was a teenager, I also heard a beautiful guitar composition in my dream. My dream wasn't as complicated as Tartini's, there was a fall leaves moving on a laying down lady, as the lady closed her eyes, my sight angle was getting closer to her and a beautiful, extremely beautiful guitar composition was playing with an angelic reverb, the lady was either dead or sleeping but in front of everything, there was yellow leaves was moving in deadly peace. I also couldn't remember exactly how it was when I woke up and made a bad imitation of it like Tartini. Another thing I don't understand of this song is, it's 16 min long but for example in the dream I saw, the melodies were 16 bar long at most.

Giuseppe Tartini was a virtuoso violinist, composer, and Italian music theorist of the Baroque period. His best known work is a sonata called The Devil's Trill, world famous for its excessive demand, capable of putting the most advanced violinists in trouble. With an approximate duration of 15 minutes, its difficulty is such that, for a long time, there was a rumor that Tartini had 6 fingers on his left hand. The legend behind this sonata, told by Tartini himself in a letter to his friend, the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande, relates how during a dream, the devil appeared to the musician offering to become his servant in exchange for his soul. Before agreeing, Tartini challenged the devil to play a romantic tune on his violin to test his skills. The sounds that came out of his instrument were so impressive, that Tartini felt that he was losing his breath, which, according to his account, made him wake up. In the words of the musician, it was "a sonata as wonderful and beautiful, played with so much art and intelligence, as I had never conceived before nor in my most daring flights of fantasy." Upon awakening, Tartini immediately took up his violin, trying to retain the melody. However, later he would write to his friend Lalande that, although this work was the best thing he had composed in his life, it was mediocre compared to what he had witnessed during the dream. Some experts in the field believe that Tartini's work aims to tell the story of Lucifer: a beginning where everything is calm and harmony, when Lucifer was an angel; followed by a gloomy intermission, representing feelings of envy and expulsion to Earth; to end with a noisy ending, expressing the hatred and pain that characterize hell. The truth is that it will never be known for sure if what Tartini relates in his letter really happened. Nor is it clear whether the devil actually presented himself in dreams or was only delusional during a feverish night. On what there are no doubts, is that the devil's trill is a true masterpiece.
Tartini allegedly told to the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that he had dreamed that the devil had appeared to him and had asked to be Tartini's servant and teacher. At the end of the music lesson, Tartini handed the devil his violin to test his skill, which the devil began to play with virtuosity, delivering an intense and magnificent performance. So singularly beautiful and executed with such superior taste and precision was the Devil's performance, that the composer felt his breath taken away. Told by Tartini himself in Lalande's Voyage d'un François en Italie: One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. "The greatest works of art are those we dream and not those we make on paper."
I highly disagree
@@bargledargle7941 I disagree because you could always imagine something with a 'better' property that something that already exists. Something that is great, could in ones imagination always be greater.
@@setonix9151 What I believe happens is that our imagination only tricks us to think it's better, since it induces the feeling that it's great despite the fact it's not actually... Mostly what we actually imagine is anything but great
I do agree that we tend to think what we imagined was better, until we actually put it to paper/sound/visuals
Hypothetically maybe, only in theory, we "can" do that... But we never do so or almost never...
@@bargledargle7941 What is anything if not our perception. What we see may not be reality in the physical sense, but all it's property is all subjective through our subjective experience. There is nothing objective about the quality of art except how it affects our emotions.
It is then true that better is still better, not for it's physical reality, but because of our own isolated imagination. The only thing we have for certain, which we base everything on, even truth, since that stems from our subjective trust.
@@setonix9151 We are misunderstanding our experience. Much like you can like a person only because of the context and not because of the personality of the person. But you think what you like is the personality. It's typical that people don't understand their own subjective experience... This is what happens when imagination comes into play. The person does experience something great, but not because of what they are imagining, but the side effects.
I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke."
Mesmerized by the devil’s brilliant and awe-inspiring playing, Tartini immediately attempted to recreate what he had heard. However, despite having said that the sonata was his favorite, Tartini later wrote that it was "so inferior to what I had heard, that if I could have subsisted on other means, I would have broken my violin and abandoned music forever."
I can barely imagine how good the actual sonata must have been that he heard the devil play in his dream.
Cool story
Lucifer was the angel of music amongst other things
@@miguelsalas8583 he was the musical choir director of all the angelic hosts. They say he had 13 pipes and sounds. He could also play in octaves with each of his angelic instruments. The other angels described Lucifers body as the perfect musical instrument that God had ever created. When Lucifer played all the angels would weep hearing the sounds he would create. That's the thing ive found about him.
@@miguelsalas8583 Ezekiel 28:13 check for yourself but here is the whole verse, "Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the stardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the saphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created." I newly learned about the story of this song.
It's impossible to hear very long composition in a dream I guess. So probably this 16 mins is also is like telling a frustration how he can't exactly remember that!

Funny how tartini dreamt a whole sonata and remember most of it by ear, and i can't even remember what i ate for lunch
Elbarto very under appreciated comment I see..
Elbarto wtf me too 😭
Tbh, I don't think he dreamt the whole, maybe some, and the rest he came up with later.
Sure he did. Ever hear of bullshit. Maybe a piece or idea but the entire thing huh? Don’t think so.
Didn't he listened to something different but sound like this? I was told the music he heard was like the best piece ever, but he couldn't remember it, but composed something similar.
The funny part is, devil's plan worked. Devil played a beautiful sonata for him, because devil knew when Tartini wakes up he will try to play it. Eventually he tried over and over again and he went crazy because he can't play the music he heard. That was the Devil's plan, make him doubt himself. Everyday Tartini lived was a hell for him, because he never be able to play the music, even he did a masterpiece
and sorry for my Bad English guys. Please correct my mistakes!
That makes so much sense actually!
Like that time Captain Holt from Brooklyn nine-nine showed Peralta pictures of himself hula-hooping and when Peralta asked why he showed it to him, it was because Holt knew no one would believe him and then proceeded to delete the pictures. 😂
Many people forget the fact that satan/lucifer was an archangel himself. Remove his malice/greed, he was still was the fucking angel of light. Imagine what kind of talent and mastery he would've had of everything, not just music. We all fail to comprehend the fact he had so much confidence in himself (probably because he was so goated) that even with having everything, he went on to rebel against the GOD himself. Doesn't matter how evil he is, the dude is fucking goated to have stood for what he thought was right.
The English a bit broken, yes, but this is a phenomenal point. You're absolutely correct, the Devil, even if Tartini's dream version of the devil, absolutely drove the composer to hell by creating something so majestic and beautiful, that even a master musician like him would NEVER be able to do it justice.

Since Tartini described the real composition as so beautiful that he couldn't recreate it, I think of Paul's second letter to the Corinthians, in which he says "and no wonder, for even the devil masquerades as an angel of light". Since the devil is described as being extremely beautiful, you would think that his works would appear beautiful, too.

Told by Tartini himself in Lalande's Voyage d'un François en Italie:
One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music which I at this time composed is indeed the best that I ever wrote, and I still call it the "Devil's Trill", but the difference between it and that which so moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me.
....
Thank u
Sounds like bullshit to me but who cares--the music is glorious!
