  • Once again, a local hire boat (narrow beam narrowboat 'Green Woodpecker'), due to ignorance (lack of education), the crew opened the lower gate paddles too far too fast, producing a current, which nearly forced 'The Lucy Locket' from its mooring.

Nothing to see here Stan, keep movin' right along. The ONLY slight incompetence I saw, was on the part of the ascending boats crew. He was trying to hang on to a twenty ton boat just by standing on the towpath and pulling on the centre line. I'm pretty sure there was a ring there and he should have used it. Then, when the descending boat exited the lock, quite rightly leaving the gates open, the ascending crew walked away from the boat without a windlass so, much good he was going to be working the lock. The crew on board acted so slowly, they had to throw a windlass onto the bank. Always a good move. Apart from indecision and inexperience, mostly on the part of the ascending boat, I saw no "Disaster controlled".

I spent 2 years travelling the canals up and down the country and we liked the hire boaters. Especially on the double width locks. They usually have lots of eager crew to do the locks. I found the problem was with the shiny boat brigade who would normally appear at weekends and would have an attitude of self importance. Probably not as bad as the plastic boat owners on the Thames but still as annoying. I 've had a few near misses where shiny boats have forced their way through where I have had the right of way. Yeah. I'd rather have a hire boater near me.
