Enjoyable video. You are capturing the broader city landscape of Chester which is very enjoyable. We lived in the UK 1978-81 and your style of filming picks up the warmth and architecture of Briton. Thank you.
I just found you guys. Sorry about the drown. What a great video. I live in the USA, wish I could do what you lovely couple do. I am retired. But that's ok. I can live thru you traveling and having a great time. God Bless.
Good that you explained the benefit to you for viewers to hit the Thumbs Up etc. I went back through and Thumbs Up on all past videos. You two are my favorites! This Floridian has learned UK geography from you and other Narrowboaters.
So glad you are getting a lot from our videos. The UK is a fantastic place and we hope to show how beautiful it can be to UK residents as well as those overseas. Thank you for taking the time to give us some more thumbs up. It really does help to get our videos shared more xx
Rich and Fran quiet an adventure with the Staircase Lock! Ms. Fran I could see why you were a little scared by it all. I do think you two are so great together! Thanks for taking us all along! Sorry to see your drone all broken Rich!
A boat lover from Australia here just wanting to say how much I'm enjoying your videos. At a time of pandemic, global mayhem and political chaos it's great to watch a couple just getting on with the things they love doing. Richard and Fran, thank you. 😊👌👍
As an arTist/ craftsman I really enjoyed from the point of the weaving thru the most beautiful shot of the locks that I have seen on anyone's video. I wanted you to stop and let me do a watercolor , a line and wash...i can't figure out how to stop the video...makes me wish I could be there. Beautiful!
Well done. We had the same sort of problems on the BCN north of Birmingham and Dudley. Not a staircase problem, but the pounds between 3 locks were totally empty! Also when doing Grindley Brook staircase, we were at the bottom waiting for a boat to come down and they tried to fill the bottom lock when it was already full - see our boat bob around and end up on the other side of the cut!
A bit of everything in this great vlog. From the drone shots of the dismal and murky morning to the scary incident with the locks (happy you eventually got through okay) to the pleasant footage from atop the walls! Thank you..
This video made me feel alot better 😂😂 we tried to get up this staircase today, the middle section is still leaking ridiculously, we gave up after 2 hours and going to try again tomorrow. The middle section is a massive issue and not fixed still after 4 years....
Hey Rich, I don’t think you should be hard on yourself for what happened. Obviously, in all the hundreds of locks you all have negotiated, you haven’t before encountered this exact situation. And you’ve done everyone else a HUGE service by filming this episode, helping others in their understanding of the possibilities. And the music, once again, was so nice when you walked the ramparts.
Thank you so much for your comments Doug. Hopefully anyone else coming this way can take a little extra care at these locks now. Glad you like the music
Good evening to you two, it was not a good day, the broken drone, the problem of the lock very stressful, fortunately it ended well, I am happy for you that it still went without damage for you and your boat. I send you all my sympathy
Good evening Jean-Louis. We are always thankful when we are all fine and the boat is still afloat. We still enjoyed a lovely walk, and slept very well. Thank you for watching X
Hi guys, still enjoying your videos, l love that you shop at the charity shops Fran, our family still love them in states, when you get a chance to shop after vivid 19, please take us with you😘
Beautiful 3:30 AM shots. Sorry for the issues with the locks, however, it was a perfect lesson for those of us who lack an understanding of how they work. Enjoyed the Chester segment and its history . Thanks for everything you both do.
Once you were on the bottom in the top lock you should have opened the gate to the 2nd lock and let the water run into both locks together that would have saved you going up and down in the chamber and you would have been able to see the 2nd chamber from the boat
Know exactly how you feel - think alot of us boaters have all been there - this happened to us half way up Wigan flight - exactly the same - only it was going dark - so one lesson we learned -- never go through locks late in the day - so well done you two -I thought you both kept calm - thank you for sharing your adventures - - - stay safe -
That whole thing was scary, it got worse when you talked about it, especially because you've known of people who got their boat wedged, glad you came thru unscathed, Chester was beautiful, thanks for the tour.
I was there yesterday and it looks intimidating to say the least 😕 you did well to stay cool as I did when a mattress got on my propeller last year...... 👌👌👌😉
I'm from just outside of Chicago Illinois in the U.S. I just wanted to tell you it is a pleasure watching your video's. We don't have places that old here, and its interesting to see them in your travels. Please keep making these video's about your adventures.
Don't you just love Chester. Driven into the city twice but nothing beats going in by boat. If you don't mind paying through the nose, make sure you visit the zoo. Absolutely brilliant
Britt's that drink coffee. now there's an unheard of fact. Here's a treat you might like. when you make your next cup of coffee add a tablespoon of instant chocolate mix and 2 or 3 drops of orange extract. Give the mix a good stir and sit down and think about your holiday plans or just watch the world pass by.
I can't imagine how nice it must feel to be on the canal boat, In the cold fresh air and a day of exploring and freedom ahead. Keep up the brilliant work pal.
Oh my guys I just couldn’t go out onto the waterways scared of deep water and not knowing how depth of the canal , I just feel very unwell regarding locks and canals , I love to see you both and how your enjoying the waterways , I feel better with bricks and mortar. ! Oh my gosh I would feel scared too ! Enjoy guys x
Thank you for watching and for your comment. It is really not that bad as the canal is usually only about 4 ft deep and you can stand up. The locks are the bit to be careful in
Enjoyed that, Batteries never like the cold (drone) Chester a very beautiful city. as for the locks live and learn + plus no damage. I was told in my youth, A man who knows every thing, knows nothing, a man who say he knows nothing, knows something! 😃👍
Hello, We are from Quebec, Canada and are new to your channel. We just love your videos, your boat( both versions, we cheated and peaked at the latest one hihi) We think you guys are adorable. The dogs are so sweet. We love traveling with you from our living room sofa. Just gorgeous and stunning some of the views. The problem in those locks with no water was scary. I can't see myself driving the boat...Fran is supper good. Your narrating is great, funny, educational and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your lives and travels with us...happy trails...or waterways.Trala love😘
Thank you so much for watching us from Quebec. It is funny how other lives from around the world are so interesting. So glad you are enjoying our story x
Poor Franny, poor drone. Glad you escaped the dodgy lock. You won't forget that in a hurry. May I suggest taping a strip of polystyrene to the drone, in case it ever ends up in the drink. At least it won't disappear immediately... All the best.
Glad we didn't go down the locks. We were in a small hire boat and were able to wind just before them. As always we didn't have much time to explore Chester so its good to see your footage. Loved the blackbird song at the beginning.
Fran your weaving is just beautiful...so glad you both got through the staircase lock safely and on to walk the wall around Chester. Thanks for sharing and hope your drone is aloft very soon.
OMG..! So pleased that Fran is ok... It would really have put the wind up me..! Reminds me of the time that I got stuck in Somerton Deep lock... I drove in ok, went down ok, but the bottom gate wouldn't fully open because of silt building up behind it and there wasn't enough width to drive the boat out. Still get nightmares about that..which was 18 months ago and we'd only owned a boat for a few weeks .🍷🍷
Hi Steve. I remember you telling us about that. The worst bit for me is being in the lock and having no control. I think you climbed out didn't you. I really wanted to avoid that. Still, we are all still here and still boating so it can't be that bad can it? X
I always enjoy your side trips into the towns and villages. It warmed to 47F today and felt a bit spring like, but we won't see flowers in NH until April. Thanks for your vlogs.
Oh my. That lock business was scary! You did very well, Fran. And you both added some knowledge and experience to your boating resumes!! Loved watching Fran work the loom, and I loved the opening early morning video with the birdsong!
6.31 the little small bridge is the bridge they used to walk condemned prisoners to last rites before execution. Thought some may find that interesting. Great video 🍻
We got stuck in that lock last year when we first moved our boat. No leaking lock though being newbies and not knowing what we were doing hubby hadn't shut the paddle fully in the bottom lock so as fast as we were trying to fill the middle one we were loosing it, luckily enough there were two crt workmen having lunch in a van and noticed us struggling 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Lynn, like us, you were lucky to get some help. An information board here with instructions would be great for less experienced boaters and for those of us not thinking clearly!
What a classic story, as though from times of old... a pretty little blonde damsel in distress, stuck, as it were, with her boat NOT afloat in the bottom of a dungeon-like structure and completely helpless. Along comes her knight in a knit cap who, with the help of a couple of burly gents, manages to unleash the flow of stubborn water into her cage - and, yes, were able to Float Her Boat once again! Then the cheers of 8,650 loyal subscribers rang through the Staircase Locks as she emerged triumphant, quite prepared to continue onward - regardless of the trials and tribulations of jolly old England's ancient canal system. Hoorah! 😁👍
There was a young lady called Fran who went to cheater by upon the canal, on the way there a staircase lock did play fowl by spouting water everywhere, poor Rich he did his best to remedy this by means of twiddling paddles, which left poor Fran bobbing up and down like a cork upon a river, now when she was up she was up, and when she was down she was down, but when she was only half-way up she was neither up nor down, time for a pint!!!, glad you are both safe and sound, hope you enjoy the boat museum (don't miss the little cottages).xx
Exciting lock adventure and yes Ric you should have checked the lock out a bit better and saw no water in the next lock . Flying drones in fog tends to play havoc with the electronics apart from also losing sight of it . Nevertheless a great vlog and the walk on the wall at Chester :-)
In early May we began watching your journey as result of Kevin from Aslan’s recommendation. Of course we had to start at the very beginning and have now worked our way up to this video as of last night. We are with you in February 2020, listening to your travel plans and thinking, “We need to warn them of what is coming!” We will stay tuned to see how you deal with the pandemic: Do you stay on the boat? Do you go back to the cottage? Will everyone be ok? We are enjoying your series and poor Rich’s fussing over rain (what we wouldn’t give for rain in Texas!) and your comments on how hot it was for a couple of days the preceding summer, while we are melting in multiple 100 degree F days. You make us laugh and show us beautiful scenery and we are blessed in getting to know you from afar.
What a terrible experience for you both I'm pleased that your both OK what a nice couple you are and I liked fran doing her weaving what a interesting vlog you have good luck on your travels its the first time that I ve watched what a great job your doing I've subscribed straight away thank you both for letting us see how life is like on the canals
We had big trouble in a 3 chambered stair case lock on the Leeds and Liverpool in October. In the end I was able to sort it and get us through unscathed but it was VERY scary - and I still have nightmares about it now and again. I have a hint as to how you must have felt! You handled it so well and I am so glad everything is ok.
Hi Justine. It was not good being stuck down in the lock and having no control. All I could think about was planning my escape root. Thankfully I didn't need it. X
@@FloatingOurBoat thank goodness. I am glad you were ok and it was all fine - and no escape needed. I wasn't helming when it happened to us - I was working the locks. I was so scared - and so worried.
Thanks for showing the some times hard side of canal cruising. Glad you managed to get it resolved safely. It also highlights the severe lack of funding available to the Canal groups. Amazing how the governments always have money for 'The flavour of the month' projects, but can't see the benefits of supporting none-profit organizations. I'll stop the rant here. Gloucester, thanks for showing us another fascinating town to visit when all this current madness subsides. Personally, can't see another UK trip till summer 2022. On that happy note I'm going to have a libation and watch another episode from your channel and Rich, keep your batteries warm mate. Be well, Be safe.
Lovely city Chester, though much changed since my youth. There was no high rise then. Glad your safe after the mishap in the stair case lock. Enjoy your videos both about canal living and the tours of the local attractions.
Another great vlog. We spent the night in Chester last week on my home from Liverpool. Not the place to visit in DRY January, some great pubs. We can recommend your "No knead Bread" Fran, works every time. My other half loves it so thank you. Safe travels.
NZ follower, subbed, bell and fan for long time now - thanks for sharing the ups and downs, hopefully you are over your adventure now and only a few more days to go until February 🥂🍾💚💚💚
Thanks yet again, really enjoy your videos, you show things warts, frustrations and all, they seem emotionally honest. Sad about the drone, hope it’s a quick fix. Thanks also for the education, so many things you show gives a heads up to me. Another good job well done.
Dear Fran and Rich - we so love what you do and would love to meet you sometime. We travelled the canals for 6 months in 2013 and are itching to get back. thanks so much for the time you take to share your experiences - warmest regards from Bob and Karen in Brisbane Australia PS - Bob's a Brummy born again Aussie (just) - know youre an England fan Rich, youre a decent bloke so you must be a Villa fan too!!
Hi Bob and Karen MN Brummie x Aussie now that must be an interesting accent. Rich is a lovely guy and of course a Villa fan. Thanks for watching Fran x
Can I just say how much I am enjoying your newish intro. It is just lovely. And I don't know if you have a new camera, but the video quality is simply superb! Wow those shots at 3 AM were really great. Just loved the bird sounds. Chester looks beautiful. Can't wait to see more of it on your return visit. I hope you spiked that coffee with something strong and bracing--you certainly deserve it after the day you had!
Thank you for lovely comments Anne. We have had the camera for a while, but Rich is always trying to improve the filming. We to are looking forward to more of Chester.
That could have been a very different outcome.! Thank goodness for you guys, and your boat that it wasn't. The possibility of your stern gear , i.e skeg, prop being seriously damaged by something under the water in the lock chamber is very real. By the way that particular lock (middle lock) was exactly the same when we went through it on the way to Elmsmere port in 1981. Nice video guys, all the Best.
HI, we love your videos and watch all the time. We are subscribers. You have inspired me to weave and I wonder what kind of loom you use and if you would do a weaving/ teaching video.
Hi Laura. That is wonderful. My loom is a Saori Loom. I will add a link to saori weaving here. Lots of people ask about the weaving, We have covered it a little bit in some of our videos but are thinking of doing a bit more soon. www.saoriglobal.com/home
Braver than me Fran. When we went to Chester, I panicked when I saw how deep the locks were and my lovely, capable 12 year old nephew took my very new boat through! We moored first a couple of days in the basin at the bottom. A historic working boat was moored next to us, the wind blew their very old Buckby can in the canal. My boys spent the whole day with magnets and eventually found the can! They were well rewarded with sweets from the grateful owners. Happy days!
Last year while sitting on my boats roof watching a phamtom drome, worth 1000s swooping around the lock and over the river... Oh the river. I live on the selby canal which meets the tidal ouse river, this drone suddenly just dropped into the river, most likely never seen again, you were so lucky. And liked and subbed 😁
Every day is a learning day glad it all worked out ok but can understand Frans concern ,being in any lock with water coming in behind let alone a deep one like that
Oops, well done for getting through that I think I would have been bricking it. Coming to Chester in a fort night gonna visit the Anderson boat lift on the CRT open week end. Thanks guys take care.
UK watcher - Subbed - Bell rung - Like clicked - Watched all Vlogs - Keep the vids coming!!! :D
Dito! STILL on catchup Australian fan 😁🇦🇺🦘🌏 Thankyou Andrew!🤗
Well Done!
Wow your loom work is amazing
Thanks so much 😊
That's why I Love Scotland, we can roam & camp almost everywhere.
Just as it should be
Enjoyable video. You are capturing the broader city landscape of Chester which is very enjoyable. We lived in the UK 1978-81 and your style of filming picks up the warmth and architecture of Briton. Thank you.
Thank you Joseph
I just found you guys. Sorry about the drown. What a great video. I live in the USA, wish I could do what you lovely couple do. I am retired. But that's ok. I can live thru you traveling and having a great time. God Bless.

Rich and Fran quiet an adventure with the Staircase Lock! Ms. Fran I could see why you were a little scared by it all. I do think you two are so great together! Thanks for taking us all along! Sorry to see your drone all broken Rich!
Thank you Mark.
A boat lover from Australia here just wanting to say how much I'm enjoying your videos. At a time of pandemic, global mayhem and political chaos it's great to watch a couple just getting on with the things they love doing. Richard and Fran, thank you. 😊👌👍
Thank you John, but it really is our pleasure
Well some times things will go wrong . But you did get there in the end.
well done to you both...I bet you slept well that night Fran!
Beautiful!
Thank you Marjorie x
Really enjoying your adventures .. especially right now when things are so worrying ..thank you
Thank you, glad you are enjoying them x
We have had a few bad stories about Grindley. Not looking forward to that one.
Oh no, that is terrible. They are really scary locks

Thank you for taking us with you on your exploring of places you stop at its really interesting for us non citizens. Loving your channel
Good evening to you two, it was not a good day, the broken drone, the problem of the lock very stressful, fortunately it ended well, I am happy for you that it still went without damage for you and your boat. I send you all my sympathy

Beautiful 3:30 AM shots. Sorry for the issues with the locks, however, it was a perfect lesson for those of us who lack an understanding of how they work. Enjoyed the Chester segment and its history . Thanks for everything you both do.

Glad the lock issue was resolved in not too much time. Chester looks to be a great walk! Thanks for the video.
Once you were on the bottom in the top lock you should have opened the gate to the 2nd lock and let the water run into both locks together that would have saved you going up and down in the chamber and you would have been able to see the 2nd chamber from the boat

Thank you so much
I had a neighbor in Marblehead Ohio who weaved for sport. Fran, you’re doing great!
Thank you x

That sounds so scary. We have always said we would never chose to work locks in the dark
Fun and games in the locks....York also has city walls and have walked them many times while at University there.....
We are looking forward to going to York
That whole thing was scary, it got worse when you talked about it, especially because you've known of people who got their boat wedged, glad you came thru unscathed, Chester was beautiful, thanks for the tour.
Stay safe guys any locks are difficult staircase so trying and tricky too glad your okay n safe x
We are fine thank you Philip, always learning.
I was there yesterday and it looks intimidating to say the least 😕 you did well to stay cool as I did when a mattress got on my propeller last year...... 👌👌👌😉
Sorry to hear that. When you are in that situation, the only thing you can do is keep your cool.

Fran's weaving looks awesome. I wonder if a lot of people aren't subscribed because TH-cam accounts aren't needed to watch.
Don't you just love Chester. Driven into the city twice but nothing beats going in by boat. If you don't mind paying through the nose, make sure you visit the zoo. Absolutely brilliant
Didn't think the zoo was that expensive, considering they're a charity, and all the work they do.
Bad days happen. As long as no damage is done alls is well.

Poor Franny, poor drone.
Glad you escaped the dodgy lock. You won't forget that in a hurry.
May I suggest taping a strip of polystyrene to the drone, in case it ever ends up in the drink. At least it won't disappear immediately...
All the best.
i am from germany , i like seeing your videos . you have a nice countryside .

Thanks for the jaunt around the city walls! As always, I appreciate you taking us along for the ride 🙏🏽
Oh my. That lock business was scary! You did very well, Fran. And you both added some knowledge and experience to your boating resumes!!
Loved watching Fran work the loom, and I loved the opening early morning video with the birdsong!
Thank you Jo
Absolutely cracking blackbird in song in early morning. Topjob
That was scary, Fran! Glad all is okay. Rich and friends were able to get you out of there!
I think it was one of my scariest moments on the boat. It is worse when you are stuck in the lock and can't do anything but rely on others.
6.31 the little small bridge is the bridge they used to walk condemned prisoners to last rites before execution. Thought some may find that interesting. Great video 🍻
Wow, thank you. We didn't realise that

Thank you Albert. I will have to keep a book of all your writings. We are looking forward to the museum and will look out for the cottages. X
Great characters and a couple of nutters but really nice folks, Happy boating
We take that as a great compliment. Love beiing nutters x

You make us laugh and show us beautiful scenery and we are blessed in getting to know you from afar.
Thank you Marilyn and thank you for working your way through our old videos. If only we knew then what we know now. x
Well done Fran, you kept your cool. You're a great team. Chester looks beautiful.
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your comment and for subscribing, x
My hat off to you Fran my wife would have climbed out of the lock and gone for a large coffee or a stiff drink and left me to do that lock on my own.
Love it.Chester looks good.
Enjoy your videos both about canal
living and the tours of the local attractions.
Thank you Colin.
Another great vlog. We spent the night in Chester last week on my home from Liverpool. Not the place to visit in DRY January, some great pubs. We can recommend your "No knead Bread" Fran, works every time. My other half loves it so thank you. Safe travels.
Hi David. So glad you're enjoying the bread. We will enjoy the pubs on our way back through next weekend 😁
@@FloatingOurBoat I can Recommend the "Pied Bull" great beers in there.
Really enjoy your videos 😀
Thank you

Thanks yet again, really enjoy your videos, you show things warts, frustrations and all, they seem emotionally honest.
Sad about the drone, hope it’s a quick fix.
Thanks also for the education, so many things you show gives a heads up to me.
Another good job well done.
Dear Fran and Rich - we so love what you do and would love to meet you sometime. Loved it guys thanks 😁👍👏👏👏
Glad you got through unscathed nice video a bit risky showing you flyer id Rich
Can I just say how much I am enjoying your newish intro. It is just lovely. And I don't know if you have a new camera, but the video quality is simply superb! Wow those shots at 3 AM were really great. Just loved the bird sounds. Chester looks beautiful. Can't wait to see more of it on your return visit. I hope you spiked that coffee with something strong and bracing--you certainly deserve it after the day you had!
Thank you for lovely comments Anne. We have had the camera for a while, but Rich is always trying to improve the filming. We to are looking forward to more of Chester.
Love your videos and your music choices. Thank you for sharing.
Oh my goodness, Fran, you did so well. I would have totally lost it so very well done xx
Thank you Maggie x
Great vlog again guys, hope your drones ok.

@@FloatingOurBoat
You let the side down Rich.... it was all the bars in Chester.🍷🍷

Every day is a school day! Keep safe.
Happy you made it through the locks...sorry about your drone, good that it landed on the boat :)
Happy days!
Sounds as if you have a lovely family. We also stayed in the basin below the locks. We needed a rest by then x
Back in the 60s issues like that became par for the course on the cut. Well done on getting through, every day is a learning day 😁
Last year while sitting on my boats roof watching a phamtom drome, worth 1000s swooping around the lock and over the river... Oh the river. I live on the selby canal which meets the tidal ouse river, this drone suddenly just dropped into the river, most likely never seen again, you were so lucky.
And liked and subbed 😁
Thank you
Lived in Chester for many years. Lovely city to visit. Dry January nearly over.
Every day is a learning day glad it all worked out ok but can understand Frans concern ,being in any lock with water coming in behind let alone a deep one like that
The worst bit is having no control when you are down in the lock, and it was so deep. Next time we will know better. X
Scary....glad you got through in the end..stay safe from sunny norfolk england....
Oops, well done for getting through that I think I would have been bricking it. Coming to Chester in a fort night gonna visit the Anderson boat lift on the CRT open week end. Thanks guys take care.
Hi Alan. I think we looked calmer than we felt. Chester is great, you will love it.
