Hazards and dangers caused to cyclists by on-street parking.
Hazards and dangers caused to cyclists by on-street parking.
I would argue that on-street parking constitutes a crime, under the Highways Act 1980.
Part IX of the Highways Act 1980 (“the Act”) relates to the lawful and unlawful interference with highways and streets and Section 137 in that part of the Act states that “if a person, without lawful authority or excuse, in any way wilfully obstructs the free passage along a highway he is guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 51 weeks or a fine or both”.
As a regular cyclist, mostly using the Highways, I find vehicles parked on the highways cause danger: -
1. Motorists open doors in front of passing cyclists, forcing them to brake and/or swerve to avoid a collision.
2. Parked vehicles force cyclists further into the highway, sometimes into the oncoming carriageway, especially on rural/dense urban roads.
It is generally recognised that cyclists should pass parked vehicles with a 1.00-metre space (handlebars to vehicle), to avoid doors being opened.
Under the new Highway Code, hierarchy rules vehicles must pass cyclists with at least 1.50 metre distance (30MPH). This is impossible in most circumstances, where parked vehicles are involved, including on-coming vehicles.
With respect, WBDC, together with every Local Authority in the UK, has no right to commandeer highways and designate them as a million-mile linear car park…
Here is an example: The Old Bath Road, Newbury, a substantial length of free parking for many years, causing cyclists to ride almost in the middle of the road (white line) to avoid sudden opening of vehicle doors, requiring passing vehicles to overtake on the opposite carriageway. This stretch of parking was commandeered by WBDC, introducing a parking fee, without any mitigation toward the safety of cyclists.
It is recognised the vehicle door opening zone must be avoided, but these road makings are inadequate. A distance of at least 1.50 metres is required (+ 1.5m for the cycling zone), forcing a cyclist to ride in the middle of the road.

Oh, what a shame you have to cope with other people on the road. If you had any courtesy or ability and your bike had some breaks you could use any brain you have and do the job properly.
I didn't see any problem with car doors opening .. the blue car slowed down to pass you with plenty of space ... Also you were riding your cycle the wrong way towards the traffic.. ride your cycle with the traffic NOT against the traffic .. So what is your problem
Is a cycle lane a Highway?
You just don't don't get it do you Stan. What we have is global totalitarian fascism, or to be more accurate the roll out of global Communitarianism. We have the silencing of free speech on steroids, the creating of literal thought crime, censorship, propaganda and weaponised full-spectrum brainwashing that would make Orwell have sleepless nights. The idea of "Left" and "Right" politics is for morons. What we have represented is a false paradigm and an illusion of choice. It's the "Left" and the "Right" cheeks of the same fascist arse. You are a cheerleader for this. You just don't understand. This is clear..

What does it take to stop cyclists from riding on the footpaths???
Nothing - that which is necessary is legal.
To stop cars parking on footways cars will have to be banned on the road network that is not designed to take them. Once you have banned cars, all the residents will move out and create a ghost town populated solely by unwelcome socio economic groups as well as those few that don't have or can't afford a car. Be careful what you wish for. its also worth enforcing legislation that prevents cyclists from riding on foot paths. One solution would be to have a a completely shared space without defining the road, the footpath or the cycle way. that way there will be no dispute and everyone ought to look after everyone else.
For someone used to boating at sea, "disasters" or "potential" disasters on a canal are a chuckle. 🤭
I don't get the point of this. Just some trippy music. What happened?
You only watched it for the disaster.
This is what happens in a society that does not lock up its mentals.
I’ve been hiring narrow boats since 1976 so consider myself experienced. I also completed RYA helmsman course. I do find canal boat snobbery rather boring and unnecessary. In my many years experience I have witnessed more boating mishaps from boat owners than hirers. Everybody makes mistakes. Get over it

Whether or not it is a close pass is debatable. As soon as I saw it I thought it looked way too close - the police obviously thought otherwise What is not in question is that fact that it was UNNECESSARILY close - there was absolutely no reason the van couldn't have gone wider - and it should have done
The Police did not proceed, realising it is all a matter of perception and unprovable.
If you cant navigate a bike through that, then you shouldnt have a bike.

So If you look at it the first group no issue your suppose to be in the oncoming traffic when passing a group of cyclist or a cyclist Now at @2;33 the cyclist should of been more in the center of the travel lane for visibility, Leafving the white van to pass in the on coming lane when safe. So yes i would personally call it a close pass.
TVP do not agree, it was NOT a class pass. not that it is EVER provable.
considering the light had turned amber before you went past it, I think this whole thing could've been avoided if you had just used common sense, you see that the road is queued up so just wait at the red light! driving isn't just law and right of way, its common sense as well.
'Amber' light. Same issue on green, junction blocked.
Pack it in. By your reckoning two cyclists could ride two abreast on a country road because a book says so and stop everyone behind from passing for miles and miles because they can't possibly give the 1.5m 'safe space' cyclists are now entitled to. Is that fair? That two people on a jolly riding bicycles can hold up an entire line of traffic trying to get to work etc because they won't ride single file and make it so the passing traffic can give the required 1.5m space? You are why people hate cyclists. You are the problem. @@stangreen2538 That’s a great idea. You are doing Gods work by not blocking up the roads. Thank you.
@@otacon5648I only cycle on footways.
I cycled everywhere as a kid in the seventies and the rule was to keep as close to the kerb as possible and no more than two abreast and it worked just fine. Now we have arrogant wanke.. cyclists taking up half the road and being prats should any motorist dare to attempt to pass them.
Cyclists need to understand the have responsibilities, as well as rights. The 1.5m rule is plain stupid when cyclists ride two abreast on the roads round here, as that means NOWHERE is acceptable to pass them, no matter how slow they're riding.
Nope, riding 2 abreast is perfectly acceptable, especially where the riders have judged it is unsafe for drivers to pass The HWC or the law make no mention of your opinions. As the overtaking driver it is your responsibility to do so safely, and it is not incumbent on those ahead to facilitate Driving safely round people on bikes is easy - I can do it, why not you?
@@bestbehaveHighway Code also states that slow moving vehicles should move over to let faster traffic pass as soon as practicable. When I was younger and getting around by bike there were even public service broadcasts stating that it was dangerous to ride 2 abreast as it limited the space to pass and put you at risk of being knocked off. The current advertising is that it MAY be safer to ride 2 abreast or in the middle of the road going round corners. It doesn’t explain why or when this maybe the case though. Thus resulting in cyclists not thinking they should ride 2 abreast even though a lot of the time this puts them in more danger.

Hi Stan, not sure if I've got the wrong end of the stick here, but it looked to me like you crossed entirely to the other side of the road to pass the group of cyclists at reasonably low speed, yet you only straddled the white line to pass the lone cyclist at much higher speed. It did look to me like a close pass, but nothing I don't see every day, although that doesn't make it right.

The woman working the nearside gate was *from* the Lucy Locket.
The red lights that you pass through serve a dual purpose, they protect both the pedestrian crossing and (as they are doing in the video) also protect the T junction where Cheap Street meets Market Street. In the video, the lights are showing red for you in order to allow cars travelling northbound on Cheap Street to enter the junction (watch the red Audi). You'll notice that the pedestrian lights are also red, signalling that it is unsafe for pedestrians to cross. On the question of "what are cyclists supposed to believe" that you pose at the end of the video, I fail to see how there is anything in this scenario that would confuse a cyclist or be subject to misinterpretation. Your lights were red, so you should stop. The lights in the other direction were green to allow cars onto the junction from Cheap Street. where does the confusion come from?
The pedestrian lights turn to red even when there are no pedestrian about (waiting to cross), so they must be faulty, by design.
@@stangreen2538 The lights turn red to allow northbound cars entering the junction from Cheap Street to safely cross the lane you were travelling in. The lights are *not* exclusively for the pedestrian crossing, they serve a dual purpose as I previously explained. In the scenario shown in the video they are serving their other purpose, to protect the T-junction for cars entering the junction from Cheap Street. The pedestrian crossing is essentially irrelevant in this scenario.
It seems obvious that you cant know whether or not the light is red if you arent following a route past the light, i would suggest however that as you are equipped with a brain you use it and note that this bizarely designed single track over bridge is not dedicated to bi directional use by cyclists at any given time, and that the bus has to rely on its green signal as they cant see clearly over the bridge for cyclists coming out of the park instead of waiting for a green signal further up.
It seems. But there are two accesses to the bridge between the lights, which would not be known to strangers with brains.
I miss the old bus station😢
Okay lets summarize this. You went on the park way bridge, then made a close up on some dog poo? 😂 Next you went back onto the bridge in the direction you came from. It is hard to tell if you are at fault here, but the bus driver did have a green light, and you do know that both sides have traffic lights, maybe it is better to enter the carrigeway at the bottom of the bridge? You never know if a vehicle in front of you is approaching, and the council can't really do much about it, unless you have an idea I am happy to hear it.

Yes, the sign of a smallminded society, agitated by the tabloid press.
It's great of you to highlight this event, but it's illegal to film in a private space without permission. Theatres, shops, libraries are all private spaces which the public are allowed to enter. The owner/manager of the space also has the right to deny or approve permission to film or take photos. They also have the ability to ban you from entering them, if they wish. The Corn Exchange IS a private space and you had no right to film in there without permission. Also, you didn't have the right to film anyone in there without their permission. Once again, it's a private space. You really need to look into the law before sticking your camera into other peoples' spaces without permission.
The use of smartphone cameras is universal at theatres, soccer matches, etc:, now deemed to be public places, where they are permitted.
The Corn Exchange have given me permission.
Perhaps a offering some friendly advice rather than filming it would have been better?
Advice is never seen as friendly in Newbury.

Stan, the issue with filming in churches is one of GDPR, as religious beliefs are a protected category. By filming anyone in the church (and I presume the grounds) you risk exposing their religious beliefs against their will and without permission. I imagine that if you complete the necessary paperwork for permission from the church and diocese, and get written consent from anyone present, you should be fine. I would suggest you take this video down, as you are knowingly violating privacy laws.
The GDPR is an EU ruling, the UK is no longer part of the EU. In the UK it is perfectly legal to capture images of anything or anyone in a public place, without anybody’s permission. It does not contravene any TH-cam rules, Please note that I have blurred all images where people are visible.
