  • Serbian food you have to try in Belgrade is Burek, Ćevapi, Rakia, Ajvar, and Karadjordjeva. As soon as we crossed the border from Romania into Serbia, we headed to Belgrade to try traditional Serbian food.
    Burek at Bobe
The first item on our list was burek. Burek is a pie made with phyllo dough and can have many fillings. We went to Bobe which is a traditional bakery in Belgrade. We got the cheese burek and headed to the Belgrade Fortress to enjoy our breakfast with a view.
    Ćevapi at Ćevabdžinica Cica
After breakfast, we wandered through the fortress and made our way to Belgrade's main pedestrian street called Knez Mihailova. Right off of Knez Mihailova is Ćevabdžinica Cica and they serve up some of the best Ćevapi in Belgrade. Ćevapi are meat sausages that are are grilled and served with onions and bread (somun).
    Rakia at Rakia Bar
After the delicious Ćevapi, we tried the Serbian national drink Rakia. While at the Rakia Bar, we received the best hospitality. We tried several types of Rakia (plum, apricot, plum with lavender and honey, and cherry). We also had a nice snack of ajvar (Serbian red pepper spread) and breadsticks. Rakia Bar is a must-visit if you're in Belgrade.
Karadjordjeva at Dva Jelena (The Two Deer Restaurant)
Our last stop on our Serbian food tour in Belgrade was at Dva Jelena to try Karadjordjeva. Karadjordjeva was amazing! It's a Serbian dish that is made with veal or pork and stuffed with kajmak (dairy product similar to clotted cream). The popular Serbian dish is breaded and then fried. The kajmak was the star of the dish. It was so yummy we used bread to sop up all of it.
We fell in love with Belgrade. The food was phenomenal and the people were so kind and welcoming. We hope you enjoyed our Belgrade Food Tour!

The Karađorđeva šnicla is also called "woman's delight". Guess why!
You should ask for "gotova jela", pronounced "yela". That is precooked slow food, and are more genuine national dishes than what's prepared on the grill.
Probably my favourite is tripe, especially calf's head with tripe, "teleća glava u škembetu". It might sound a bit repulsive but the tripe has a texture that resembles al dente pasta and is usually served in a clay pot together with the meat of the head, that has been simmering for about 7 hours, in a thick and extremely tasty sauce. Think cow's cheeks, not stranger than that and that is served in Michelin restaurants. If you can, I strongly advise you to order it once and decide for yourself. The worst that can happen is that you don't like it, or you might love it as I do. You already have an experience of Serbian food quality, trust me on this one.

Thanks for your recommendation. We've never tried tripe before. We had the best time in Belgrade trying Serbian foods.

Well to be fair the cheese is different to ones you know and there are many varieties of the stuffed "pastry" you had, Cevapicci are heaven, Cordon bleu is served like this in most countries of Eastern Europe (I often see this rolled version also in other countries like USA, Japan...; in Germany and France it is often the "filled cutlet/Schnitzel") variety.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and give us more info about the foods we tried. We really appreciate it! We loved everything we tried in Belgrade! I think my favorite would have to be kajmak. I wasn't sure if it is considered cheese or cream, but it is delicious! Yes, we definitely need to try different varieties of the Burek.

It is funny how tourists fall for so called traditional food and drinks .... and go to cheap places with popular and street food and drinks which are often far from good quality ones.
You don't sample rakia drinking so much - you will just get drunk, not much more than that.
Not so long ago I would never have dreamed of Karadjordjeva snitzel becoming a traditional dish. With lemon and mayo - no way it could be traditional. It was first made for Yugoslav president Tito after the French Cordon bleau 50 or so years ago.
