  • On June 4, 2021, Avengers Campus at Disney's California Adventure opened to the public... and it's quite the land. Showcasing issues with Disney leadership more concerned with toy profits than actual guest experience, it's an alarming sign of the future of Disney parks. Join me today in exploring the history of Marvel attractions at Disney parks and comparing and contrasting Avenger's Campus and it's new ride WEB Slingers, with Marvel Super Hero Island at Universal's Islands of Adventure.

    I worked at a local museum where the curator said to me, “we get a LOT of cool donations. It’s hard, but you really have to stick with only what’s relevant to the mission of the museum.” I wish Disney would do the same to their parks. They are becoming Frankenstein’s monsters of attractions that have no relation to one another and straying from the park’s theming

    When I visited Disneyland this year I was so excited to visit the Avengers campus. Walking through the campus I felt like “that’s it?” It was extremely small and I just felt like it lacked a lot. The characters walking around just looked worn out and like they didn’t want to be there. So I totally agree that it sucks and they could of done a lot more! The shows are pretty cool. I felt bad for Spider-Man when he did his show because he did a lot of work and no one was really clapping or cheering him on. Also the area they put the show in is so hard to pack a bunch of people in to get a good view of the show. It’s a really awkward set up.

      I went a few weeks and all there is to do is the Spider-Man ride, meet some Marvel heroes, get food, buy Marvel merchandise, a few shows, and a thrill attraction that has been there since 2017 and that’s it. Not to mention that shoved Avengers ride that was supposed to be coming. A little underwhelmed but at least I got to ride the Spider-Man ride which is basically Midway Mania but using your arms which can get sore real fast. I think it would’ve got more hyped if it opened originally as we were coming off the hype that was Avengers Endgame, but at least Avengers Campus opened months before Spider-Man No Way Home so I guess I can’t complain that much

    A part of the charm of Disneyland over Magic Kingdom in the past for me was that the characters could freely walk around and interact with guests (I haven't been to DLR since Covid though), along with the typical meet & greets. I remember being told that characters walking around didn't even have to take pictures or autographs, or have a line, they were just there out & about - compared to the M&Gs where they have a queue, take photos, give autographs, etc. I have so many fond memories of interactions like Chip & Dale causing trouble in Toontown, Gaston hosting push-up competitions, and Peter Pan pulling pranks on other princesses. I loved the characters being engaged in OUR stories, even though we're "just" guests. It seems Disney has confused this with actual stage show entertainment, and someone really needs to explain to management that it doesn't and CAN'T take the place of a fully fleshed-out stage show. Definitely disappointing that they think one makes up for the other. Both are extremely important to the Disney experience - one enhancing the magical ambiance Disney is known for, and the other being an actual attraction.

      @kellymcdonell9687 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      From what I was told, the more controlled meet and greets were for the safety of the characters and guests. It’s difficult to see out of those costumes and some guests got hurt when the characters were free to do what they please. Also, sometimes the character would get harassed. So this is more safely controlled so no lawsuits will incur. I loved when they were able to just walk around though. It was fun wondering who you might run into.

They didn't have anybody helping them at the time and they yelled stop after being pulled on their butt. The man complained about being yelled at by Tigger and the cast member was written up. Also a lot of stories of princesses being touched inappropriately and not knowing who did it because of a big crowd. Unfortunate that a few A-holes ruin it for everyone.

      A (rather pro-Disney but seemingly plausible) web article characterized the shift being driven above all by the advent of *digital cameras* . Before, interactions could be casual and centered around actually interacting with the characters. Now, however, there is no limit to the amount of pictures a family could insist on taking with a character. Every possible combination of family member, numerous poses, oops I didn't like that one let's redo. There was a practical limit before that moderated such behavior and cut short those photo ops by themselves. We've certainly heard general laments about how this has given photodocumentation a new and odd centrality to nearly every leisure moment in our lives; so it has changed this. The characters' "spontaneous," unscheduled appearences around the parks threatened to turn into mob scenes impromptu photo lines, so they were moved to scheduled appearances that were more comfortable and convenient for all. This doesn't excuse the next tempting step, which may have occurred initially without even planners being fully aware of the shift in their thinking, of subtly evolving these photo lines into attractions at the expense of real attractions, however.

      In most historical telling (non-disney-sponsored) history about Eisner, it is clear that he exists in two eras - Frank Wells and Post-Frank Wells. Like Roy did with Walt, Wells collaborated with Eisner's pushes and ideas and gave them the realistic rails to work from, saying no sometimes but backing wholeheartedly when all the contingencies were planned.
      Seeing Eisner fall apart after Wells' death and move into a whole other approach wiped out all the work he had done before that.

What I would add, though, is that the merchandise isn't even that good. I may have missed a shop or two, but I scoured the campus hoping to run into some cool exclusive action figures, collectables, comics or books, T shirts, etc. Instead, I found every shop from the main spider man one, to little kiosks off to the side, all sell the same thing. Web slinger upgrades, spider bots and their accessories, and cheap toys, bags, and clothes mainly meant for kids.
    Meanwhile Marvel Super Hero Island in Universal has a pretty awesome comic book shop within where you can buy popular comic book issues, statues and other figurines, really good action figures that are only sold there, just all around really cool merchandise and that is in ONE shop in that land. Once upon a time... Disney had a standard for quality of the guest experience. I forget the exact book this came from, but it was pointing out the quality Disney once went for: They had statistics on the life span of lightbulbs. When they reached the 80% or so of life, the bulbs were changed. Burned out bulbs were a no no as it would distract from the fantasy. The day a burned out bulb was left in place was the day you knew the magic left the Magic Kingdom.
    It is fascinating to see how the modern AAA video game model has migrated to the Disney parks... I wonder how long it will be before loot boxes appear. Pay for a chance at riding the Matterhorn. Maybe you will get Small World... maybe Flight of Passage! *glances at Genie* oh... they did that. And it is even a mobile game. Fantastic.

      What's happening is that a very small minority of people with little to no impulse control are being exploited because it's better to milk those people for tens of thousands of dollars than to sell a quality product to a thousand people to gain the same amount of money.

    The WEB Slingers thing feels like an attempt to mimic Universal's integration of the wands with the Wizarding World. The interactive wands are a bit more expensive than the regular ones but have opportunities around the area to activate animatronics so it appears you are performing the spells. Plus, outside the park, it still looks like a regular wand, and goes well with a costume or cosplay. The WEB Slingers equivalents not only look like cheap toys, but are much more limited in use as they only work on the ride, which adds the disconnect of the toy simply interacting with a screen.

    As a former musician at Disney Parks on both coasts I've slowly watched the parks devolve over the last two decades. Park areas that were once bustling with entertainment and life are replaced by an obvious cash grab of an attraction. I imagine the parks will continue to denigrate into places where you spend an exorbitant amount of money to stand in an endless inline for a "ride" lasting less than two minutes.

  • @Tolgron34
    @Tolgron34 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    I remember when I worked at a small historical attraction in the UK, one of our team leaders had a motto: What would Disney do?
    The parks were seen as a golden standard for guest experiences, from customer service to immersion in the stories being told. Our attraction unfortunately was using technology that was twenty-five years old and hadn't been updated since it first opened, so we had to find new ways to enhance the experience of our guests. We were trained to ensure that even if our attraction was old, creaky and very much not itself of Disney standard, the human element was. Each costumed character was individual and unique, and we strove to ensure that our guests were the centre of the performance. And sure enough, our attraction was always praised for the quality of its presentation and human element, even if the main event was a bit lacklustre and out of date.
    Unfortunately it seems Disney itself would no longer hold up to the standards we applied to our attraction. The guest experience is no longer the primary concern of the parks, instead the focus is entirely on selling merchandise. The attractions have become little more than a way to shuttle people from gift shop to gift shop.

I live in Orange County (CA), fifteen minutes from Disneyland, and while I used to go all the time, I've only been twice since 2019. It's just not worth it, I'd rather go to any of the several other theme parks in SoCal and spend less money for an equal experience.

    As much as I love and appreciate having characters out and around again, this land could’ve been so much more than just an instagramable area. Having to buy an extra $60 worth of merch for one ride to be slightly better at it is asinine. Comparably the power up bands at universal Japan are interactive for the whole area, and also work as amiibos for Nintendo switch and wands at the wizarding world allow such a drastic change in your theme park experience. The really looked at midway mania and buzz light year and slapped a new skin on it.

      Agreed. It's baffling to me that Disney didn't think up some interactive element of Galaxy's Edge other than "scan boxes and play mini games on your phone" and Avengers Campus fails on this level too. Not that interactivity was ever promised, but it seems like quite the missed opportunity, right? It's not like Disney is incapable of doing such things. I think about the interactivity of the various effects form the games in World Showcase. While not the most interesting elements, at least it showed that Disney kind of tried 🤨

      @@PoseidonEntertainment sorry I know my comment is super late, but I had an interesting question. Was the spider man ride at avengers campus going to be using a completely different ride system in the original plans, compared to what we have now? Because there was a patent leaked in 2017 that was for a suspended swinging arm on a track type of ride that looked like it was meant to simulate swinging from webs side to side. As far as I can tell this patent hasn't been used in any rides in any disney parks yet. But it honestly seems like it would have been used in the original plans for the spider man ride at California adventure. I feel like Bob chapek cut the budget in half and that's why they decided to cheap out and give us the low budget ride we have now. Some people were saying it was scrapped due to some people getting sick in the tests for it, but I feel like that was just a cover up/excuse they used for not building the higher budget spider man ride in the patent. If a few people really were getting sick on it disney probably could have found a solution if they had tried. A few people mentioned that maybe the suspended swinging arm patent will be used for the avengers e ticket ride when it opens, that would be cool honestly. I just hate that Bob is cheaping out on rides now too, which ends up ruining them or making them lackluster. I'm glad you see it too because especially on the Disneyland reddit community when I call out disney for things like the awful web slingers ride, everyone crucifies me for daring to criticize disney. He even cut the budget for cosmic rewind at wdw, which probably explains the heavy use of screens and lack of physical sets. The ride isn't awful from the videos I've seen but it feels empty and like they could have done more. I really hope the quinjet ride here at my home park of California adventure lives up to the hype, that is if they ever un cancel/build it before the year 2053. But great video as always I love your videos!

    You can do so much with the Avengers IP in the parks--
    - an Iron Man flying coaster similar to the Superman rides at Six Flags; you could have the coaster flying over and around a fractured battle field, or make it where you're playing the part of the Iron Legion and having to chase down Ultron or something
    - If you want to chase Hagrid's Motorbike success, give riders the sky cycles from the Avengers cartoons / the OG movie. You could be a shield agent helping Hawkeye and Natasha or Falcon during a mission or something, having to dodge attacks or look into a villain's plot
    - A dark ride themed to Dr. Strange, where you follow the same kind of ride system used in Rise of the Resistance and have the riders learning magic from him and Wong or something-- the training could be interuppted by one of his villains or Wanda or something, and you have to end up running away or fighting or SOMETHING.
    - A dark boat ride that takes you through Asgard. or even New Asgard-- you could show off animatronic pegasi along with Valkriyes, you could show off the frost giants and incorproate it into the ride like Maelstrom-- you could go into the throne room, be tricked by one of Loki's Illusions, tour the castle and see the treasure room (fun place to put references!)
    I could go on and on and on, but the point is there's SO MUCH potential with this IP, and it's sad that the area as is is just mainly one big photo op.

    I’ve been watching videos like this a lot, because I kind of wanted validation. When I went to Disneyland last I really felt like it had changed. I felt like I was suddenly really bland, and I could feel the shift from management caring so much about the experience of its customers to them only caring about money. Even in the way the park is cleaned now I can tell a difference. There are spiderwebs in places that there never would have been spiderwebs before. (Obviously not the fake ones in avengers campus.) There’s dust gathered on attractions because no one is cleaning it off anymore. The cast members aren’t speaking to you in character anymore they’re just hustling you through. It feels like the park died, and all that’s left in its place is a heartless money-making machine. I bought one of the Magic keys, and I almost regret it because every time I go to the park now I just think about how good it used to be, and how far down hill it’s gone. ALSO, if somebody doesn’t put the old song back into rotation on Guardians of the Galaxy, I think I’m gonna die. The ride kinda sucks now because they are blasting some random song that wasn’t even in the guardians movies and it literally makes no sense! IF I HEAR HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT ONE MORE TIME ON THAT RIDE IM REALLY GONNA LOSE IT. They used to just rotate though the Awesome Mix vol. 1 and 2 and that was amazing and it was so much more immersive! I distinctly remember a moment in that ride where EVERYONE in the car was belting out I want you back by the Jackson 5, and it was incredible. Now I don’t even know the songs they’re playing, and I don’t get why they’re playing them. In the Guardians store, and even when you step off the ride they’re playing songs from the movies. WHY NOT ON THE RIDE?! ugh. Ok, I’m done now.

Universal still has that 2000s straight from the comics aesthetic, even if a tad campy the costumes they're exactly how they look. Whereas Disney has been criticised for their unnecessary amount of detail and "modernizing" designs. So it's interesting Universal went straight for the comics, whereas Disney focuses on the movies.

    The black widow fight (all the times I’ve seen it it’s been captain America helping her) is set up in a way that no matter where you choose to stand, unless you walk with the fighting, you will at one point not be able to see the fight.
    Part of that is because they divide the fight between one wing, center, sort of above by the Jet, and then opposite wing. It makes sense as far as playing to each area of the crowd but it is kinda sad when you hear ppl oohing and awwing but you can’t see anything. When I saw it IRL, I assumed they staged it there so the choreography looked better and also so no kid got bopped by the actors when they accidentally stumbled by.
    Personally I thought Doctor Strange’s show is worse because it’s in a rotunda area but there’s only one doorway into the rotunda. And if you miss the start, the crowd bottlenecks in the door so you can’t get in or see and the rest of the pillars block view as well. At least with the black widow fight, it’s up so you can catch glimpses and sort of get what’s going on. Doctor strange you can’t see anything except maybe some of the digital backdrop in the back door and the lighting changes.

    I’ve gone to Disneyland every year since as long as I can remember, but I hadn’t been to Disneyland since the beginning of 2019, up until I recently went in November, so almost 3 years, due to Covid mainly. Having the pleasure of being able to go to Disney every year allowed me to enjoy everything it had to offer, time and time again, without getting sick of it, bored, etc. Sure, my family and I would be tired by the end of the trip and would be ready to go back home, but we always instantly couldn’t wait to go back the following year. I’ve been able to see different parts of Disney come and go, and in the most un-cringy way possible, I like to call Disney my happy place, a second home. I know the entire land like the back of my hand. To make an already long story short, I loved Bugs Land, and even though it wasn’t my favorite place, it was still always necessary to visit the land and ride all the rides and just take in the Disney imagineering that was implemented. So, like many others, I was sad to hear Bugs Land was going away, but I accepted it because I knew it wasn’t the most popular place, and it was being replaced by Avengers Campus, something my gf and I were both excited for. Fast forward to November 2021, I haven’t been to Disney in almost 3 years, and Star Wars land and avengers campus are open. Oh yeah!!!……for just star wars land. Star Wars land was amazing. Immerse, detailed, imagineering at its finest. Then there’s Avengers campus… boring, uninteresting, a disappointment, basically just a detailed walk through to Cars Land in my opinion. What made it worse is that my gf and I thought we got lucky with Web Slingers bc the line was short, and we hadn’t been on it yet. Lone behold, not only did the ride break down while we were almost at the door, but it was scorching hot. The queue is just horrible; it’s entirely outside so you get to sit in the sun for long periods of time with no AC and laughingstocks for fans to cool you down. Nevertheless we persisted to the ride.. and decided we’d never wait in that line again… or go on the ride again for that matter. Basically, screw that Chek guy.

    This is interesting. We experienced the Avenger's Campus area in DCA just last week (Dec 28-Jan 1, 2021/2022). I had avoided any reviews or videos before the visit so that I could enjoy the land through fresh eyes. The three of us forked over US$18 each to utilize the (ridiculous) Lightning Lane feature to avoid the 240 minute standby wait time for the Spider-Man WEB slingers "attraction." Later, when discussing the ride we all agreed that it wasn't really worth $18 each and most certainly not worth waiting longer than 30 minutes to experience. I'm honestly a little surprised at how disappointed i felt walking out of the Avenger's Campus for the first time. So I made a search for "avengers campus disappointing" and discovered this gem of a video. You're putting a very fine point on some of my feelings that i've hesitated to acknowledge. This is all a shame to think that this might be the future of Disney parks as I generally really enjoy geeking out on the details of Disneyland and how everything is arranged and structured. Cheers!

    Great video. Even though I haven't been to a Disney park in several years, I cannot begin to express my 100% agreement with each topic you covered here. The standard of experience, service, and quality of US Disney parks has been steadily declining for quite some time, and it is incredibly heartbreaking to see. To me, the most infuriating thing is the fact that while Disney parks were closed during the pandemic, there were teams of people coming up with schemes to take as much money from people as possible, as cheaply as possible, while providing little to no memeorable experiences whatsoever. Instead, during that time, they could have created concepts for attractions or themed areas that would actually provide guests an experience, instead of an empty wallet

    • @ruminationstation4200
      @ruminationstation4200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! They were so focused on getting the parks reopened, when really it would have been an amazing time to do small scale renovations and things across the park that are difficult to justify when it's open. Small crews spread out wouldn't have been any more of an issue than opening the attractions was, but they needed to show investors profits for that fiscal quarter, so who cares about long-term planning or delivering a worthwhile experience?

    The Battle for Metropolis ride at Six Flags you showed clips of actually looks cool to me. Why? Because they seem to use actual fucking animatronics, actual sets, and practical effects that actually immerse you into the environment around you. Like that one scene with The Joker. Imagine sitting and getting blasted with green steam by an actual (albeit animatronic) Joker! Kind of like that one part of one of my favorite rides, The Forbidden Journey in Harry Potter World, where you fly in front of a dragon and get a blast of steam. If you're gonna use screens, you have take a note from Universal Studios and make areas that are actually apart of the ride. Even if it's just intended as a simple transition section between screens, it has to be immersive and doesn't break you out of the story. That's why even though Universal Studios tends to do a lot of rides that follow the same formula (screen, practical effects room, screen, practical effects room, etc) those are some of my favorite rides because of how much they're able to do with them. So far I've never seen a ride top The Forbidden Journey as my favorite screen ride.

    Hearing that also reminded me of that 2020 Marvel's Avengers video game that failed to garner much of a loyal audience despite its IP, primarily because it felt like a bare-bones excuse to monetize popular characters. That game would have likely been more successful if it focused on delivering a single-player story-based experience, just as Avengers Campus would have been a lot better if it didn't feel like such a shallow attempt to squeeze money out of guests' wallets

  • @yousaysilver
    @yousaysilver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    I really love how you broke all of this down- a lot of the time people get overexcited and it clouds their judgement of the actual quality of the attractions.
    Mission Breakout really is the best that this area has to offer, and it's pretty sad that the one attraction there beforehand is what sticks out opposed to the new additions. As far as sightlines go, at least within Avengers Campus it makes a bit more sense, but even then it doesn't fully seem to fit the theming around it. The preshow and theming in the queue really is the strongest this land has to offer from what I've seen, but I haven't been able to check in person quite yet.
    Pym Test Kitchen though? Yeah, that looks super cool, I'm glad at least something interesting was put in. And the stunt shows really seem like the biggest draw other than what was already there and the restaurant, so it's a shame that they can't be seen properly. Plus, it says a lot that what seems most "worthwhile" in this area of the park isn't even an attraction.
    I was super worried too when I heard about the paid add-ons for Web Slingers and... yeah, this looks like shit either way. If they did that sort of merchandising with things you could interact with around the park (ex: the way the Harry Potter area at Universal functions with the wands) I would mind less, but it seems so underwhelming and useless overall. Honestly, as far as this ride goes if they just made more physical sets it could've been a lot better, but it just seems lazy, and even the preshow area just looks slapped together. Along the lines of interacting with things around the park- I feel like with this area specifically they really missed out on the opportunity to create minigames and interactive props. With such a tech-based property they could've easily at least made some sort of phone game tie-in (similar to Galaxy's Edge), and even if it wasn't much it would've been Something at least.
    The Dr Strange area seems nicely themed, there's a real nice aesthetic to it (the photos of that area at night? immaculate) so it's a shame that the only real draw to that area seems to be a cheap show when there could've been so much more to it.
    And as far as California Adventure goes as a whole- yeah, it's about time they either denounce the California theme as a whole or rename it. I could understand keeping the name since it's well-known, but it really seems like more of a distraction at this point and they could probably do a lot better with marketing the park if they changed the name anyway.

    • @PoseidonEntertainment
      @PoseidonEntertainment  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      At least with wands and power up bands, they may be expensive but the interactivity obviously isn't giving you an advantage over someone else. I'm not confident that the WEB bands actually deliver on that advantage, but I think it's really the principal with the heavy price tag that invokes a bad taste.
      It's not like Disney isn't capable of interactivity in its parks though. I believe you previously told me that you haven't been to the parks, but Disney did add a number of interactive elements and animatronics around Epcot's World Showcase through a series of educational games aimed towards younger kids. It's not to the same extent of the wand magic but at least shows that Disney is uninterested, rather than incapable.
      Also I agree about ditching the California name if they're not going to stick with the theme. That being said, people always make fun of the idea of putting a California themed park in the middle of California, but with the right budget, could have probably been really interesting. It's something I would have really like to have seen explored, rather than throwing up Pixar all over the park.

Universal does immersion right, whether its Spider-Man, Transformers, or Potter. Meanwhile, last in WDW in 2015. Although fun, it required a lot of planning to get on the best rides more than once because of the limited FastPass then, even with early admission. Also didn't know how lucky I was to experience the Last weekend of Star Wars Weekends Ever. They had characters from all eras, Prequel & OT, walking around, parades, photo areas, stage shows, shows with Frank Oz & Ray Park (Maul). That was awesome because it's a history museum that was literally letting you interact with the past! I got to feel like a king from the London of six hundred years past was really there in front of me.
    I think the Avengers Endgame stuff can work in the same way, but it relies way more on the quality of the actors. Neither a good nor bad thing, but it limits access to being able to speak to them directly... which makes those shows not an ideal time for getting that truly interactive immersion you can when you're talking to somebody who's paid to larp as Dr Strange or Spider Man

    I have been to Universal, never been to any disney park, and tbh, im okay with that. I remember having the time of my LIFE at Universal. I begged my poor grandparents to re-ride the hulk coaster over and over again- same with the spiderman attraction. Not every ride at Universal was a hit, but the one's that were really left an impression on me.

    Thanks for this. Everyone's videos on the campus is always full of hype and everything is "amazing". It's good to have this calm analysis of the new land.

    At 1 minute and 40 seconds long is when I gave a thumbs up because I’ve been saying this for so long. Great video!
