It’s always so funny watching your videos cause you’re hitting these shots and stuff. And I still haven’t even got par yet on a hole. 😂😢. I’ve recently started playing. Not but two months? I played football and soccer in high school, but I didn’t get any college offers etc. so I just found another sport.
What I love about your videos (besides giving excellent advice) is that you get right to the point, tell us what we need to know and show us how it is done. You don't waste everybody's time. So many others would have turned this into a 30 minute video.
I haven't golfed since I was a kid - got back out there 15 years later this year - spent time at the range, but before my first real round I watched a youtube video on chipping and they said use a 7-iron. I bumped and ran 4 shots back and fourth off the green on one of the first holes lol EDIT: I made this comment before watching LOL here we go again...
I am a beginner golfer at age 55. I love the game. I have no money for lessons as I have forked out on golf equipment. This channel is the best I have found among many to learn the basics. Thank you Mr Rick Shields. Your videos are brilliantly articulated and extremely helpful.
I learned playing golf by watching others. This year i joined my first proper Club and since then i watched your tips online. Went from 24,7 to 15,1. You explain very well. Thanks from tyrol
Rick, every time I was chipping around the green in the past I was reaching for my sand or lob wedge and had inconsistent results, at best. Thanks to your advice, during my last round I reached for either my 8 or 9 iron to give the bump and run a try. I shaved 3 to 4 strokes off of my round just by using your techniques and I never pulled out my lob wedge around the green once. Incredible! I can’t thank you enough!
See I think it’s a much harder shot to go less lofted bc you have to judge the runout much more. If I go for the loft, that’s my standard chip/pitch club, so I have the contact and rollout pretty much down, I can just pick a spot I wanna land it and then go. With the 8 iron, I have to not only judge the landing spot which is gonna me tough to call bc I don’t normally chip with an 8, but then I have to judge the rollout too, and in my experience it is very hard to get this just right
I just started golfing this summer. Mostly since the whole Covid stuff started. I started as a joke with a $35 USD bag of left handed clubs my boss at work found at a yard sale. I spent a month shanking shots before I started recording myself and using foot spray on my clubs (like every shot). I spent a month watching you videos and swinging into a net. The way you explain golf in your videos has struck a note with me. Your videos have eliminated my slice and have taught me how to properly strike the ball. My grip was weak and fixed by your tips. I have learned how to swing a club differently to aquire different shot shapes and your video on hybrids got me to change my 5,4,3 irons to hybrids and my solid shot to duff ratio has basically zeroed out. I track my scores on an app that has really good with metrics if you do your own work. Outside of having access to a launch monitor it works well. If you are ever in the states and find yourself in Western Pennsylvania or Eastern Ohio please feel free to contact me to play sometime. I would live to pay your green fees to shoot a 9 or 18 beside you. Your dictation on the game has help me achieve a 10.4 handicap in my 1st year of playing. Thank you Sir!
Rick, this is exactly what I've been working on the last few weeks in my game. I've played my best two rounds of the year recently - thanks to other videos you've done on this chipping stroke. I was a mess around the greens, and I've saved several pars over the last 36 holes by chipping to within just a couple of feet. Thanks!!!
Rick Shields teaches golf the way I learn. He provides brief instruction that is excellent and the something I can work on. A few days later, after or practicing that lesson, I move on to another lesson.
@@DavidM-du7xo I feel like our embarrassment would lead to some strong lessons, that would hopefully end up strengthening our game. Would love to play a round or two with this dude.
Hi Rick, I'm nearly 64 yrs old and haven't played any golf for forty years!!! This is the four video of yours I've watched, and I think your down to earth style, experience, and obvious skills make them not only informative, but enjoyable to watch so thanks! hopefully I'll live long enough to play some decent rounds Lol
Rick, I watched this video a couple of weeks ago and decided to give it a go. I was out in Palm Springs this weekend and played 3 rounds, two of which were Pete Dye....I ditched my 60 degree and picked up my 9 iron (no offense to your 8 iron suggestion) and had the best chipping of my life. I almost holed multiple chips when previously, I was lucky to get close with my 60 degree. Thank you thank you thank you!!! Small movements with less room for error. This video made my weekend.
Update: I have now chipped in TWICE in my last four rounds. I absolutely love this technique and have sent this link to all of my golf buddies. Thank you!!
After serious play for about a year the amazing thing about watching Rick is how consistent his shots are. Out of ten bump and run shots I feel pretty good about hitting half of them right. Your vids are great Rick. Thanks for the content.
Been playing golf for over 40 years. Today I have discovered that for over 40 years I have been chipping wrong. Went out and tried it the Rick Shiels way with immediate massive improvements. Almost makes me feel like crying.
I played 18 after watching your videos. I chipped In 3 all from 50 plus yards on the front 9 and 2 holed out also on the front 9 from 25 yard chips. It was absolutely sensational I was stunned with my accuracy applying your tips. Thanks brother!!!!
Actually really valuable info as I have been using my gap wedge at the edge of the green. Also just want to let the world know I had my best tee off on a 160 yard par 3 at the weekend. 6 iron and put it 2.5ft from the hole. Even as a super novice, only takes one shot for the slices, fatting it, and whatever else to make it feel worth while
I watched your video last week and then went today and used your tips and got 2 chip ins which were my first 2 ever, I have only played 3 times and I was amazed how well I played with your videos. I improved 30+ strokes since the last time I played. I love your videos
For the bump and run chip, I use my 8 iron and hit like I’m putting. You can even gauge distance by imagining you’re putting. Works really well for me.
A fellow golfer advised me on this recently, you explained this in a much better perspective thank you once again. Your demonstrations certainly helps me move around the golf course.
I did my first chip in this summer, the old "Bump ´n Run" from about 4 meters of the green. Started playing this spring and stumbled across this channel and loved the content from the fistr video! Learnd the bump and run from you Rick and i must say thank you for all the great content and all the great free tips you give to make just not me, a better golfer but anyone who plays golf. You definitely was a big part for me lowering my hcp to 31 this year and i look forward for all the future videos!
I started chipping in my living room, 12 footers, instead of putting. Various irons and wedges. Just getting the feel of lofting the ball a bit and gaining trust in it has helped a ton with my chipping on the course. I've chipped in 3 times in the past 2 rounds, twice for birdie, with the PW and 60. Really helps to switch up the putting for chipping. You gain a lot of touch and confidence. Go Rick, love the vids and especially the vlogs from you and your crew 🤘😎
I saw this in one of your earlier videos and used this technique last month. Guess what? I actually chipped it in from 40-50ft away. Thanks! You’re videos have been loads of help!
appreciate the time you take to help out on all the intricacies that golf has to offer.. it has done worlds for my golf game already and has given me more motivation to get out there.. thank you..
I played my first round of the year today. After watching this channel all winter, I felt the strong need to verbally announce all my "bomp and roons" in a british accent. I was playing solo.
Often not practiced shot. My dad taught me to chip with all the clubs in the bag depending on the situation. I regularly will chip one in every couple of rounds. This was a good lesson Rick. Keep it up I enjoy your teaching as well as your reviews.
I always find it amazing when I’m out with other people how many don’t look at the slope of the green when there close enough to chip on. As a general rule since watching an older video of yours my short game has improved remarkably.
Great video. As a mid handicap handicapper this is something I could definitely improve on but but I’d say I’m ok at it. I would add one bit of advice. All the pros say get it rolling as early as possible but that does not necessarily mean the front edge of the green. If you aim for that you could be short which will be disastrous if it’s banked. People should aim to be safely on with a club which will run past the hole slightly. 8 and 9 are definitely my friends for these shots but with practice you learn that sometimes it’s a wedge so you can give it more if the lies is tougher or a longer club to have more roll out if the flag is further away. Sometimes it’s even just a tad more swing to land that further onto the green. Before every round when I’m on the range I keep my bad condition balls for chipping to spots 5 to 20 yards in front of me with different clubs which works really well for me.
Thanks Rick for that wonderful tip. Those are the shots we can practice for the rest of our lives. And very rewarding too. And your little game is perfect to challenge your golf buddies and make a little money.(M.G.,Qc.,Canada)
I’ve started using my PW to bump and run...Today I chipped one in and ran a couple just past...My average distance was 7 feet...Thank you for the great teaching points...
Wow I just started golf and you are my saving grace, was chipping with my high lofted wedges in these situations so much feeling like I had to smash it to give myself a decent putt well be pulling out the short irons next shot from the fringe!
I learned how to get more confident because of a video you posted awhile back! I’ve got a decent sized back yard so I practice 5-10 yard shots and aim for a specific target and land it there! I also practice lifting the ball up and dropping it on the center of our trampoline to practice short distance and getting lots of height and spin on the ball
Back playing after an extended break for knee surgeries (runner) and chipping used to be my Achilles heel. I genuinely feared it. But after watching Rick’s videos I’m much more confident, so much so that I look forward to chipping now, feeling like it’s got a chance to go in. It’s definitely my strongest element now in just 4 months. Pretty cool how just these seemingly simple instructions really work!
I absolutely love watching your videos. My game has improved so much. I’m still shooting around 92 and have only been playing 8 months but every time I play my game starts to come together a little more. Thanks for all you do.
I hit the flag my last round on a nasty up hill green because I’ve watched these “bump and run” videos. I’m a high handicap so this was a fantastic little victory. Thanks Rick!
In addition to all this I've just discovered that if you apply the usual advice for aiming a driver to chipping it improves the chip enormously. What I'm talking about is standing behind the ball finding a blade of grass or some other intermediate target and lining it up with the intended landing spot.
The reason most average golfers go immediately for loft is because it rolls out much less and therefore the biggest thing you have to judge is where you wanna land it. When you go with a less lofted club, now suddenly I have to judge how far I wanna carry and combine that with how much rollout I’m gonna get, and in my experience it’s just a much tougher judgement. If I hit a 60 I can pretty much just fling it into the air, land a bit short and get my standard rollout; it’s a super easy shot. With 8 iron, I have to read the green much more and figure out exactly how much this is gonna roll, and it can be VERY hard to tell
New to your channel, from Canada. I've already watched dozens of your videos in a couple days. Great job all around, keep them coming. Got me back in the game after years away from it, I booked my first tee time in years next Thursday. Thanks
Thanks for going over this technique as it is more important that most believe. When I was a young teen, my father often instructed me on the course as we would play. He too favored the 8 or 9 iron on chips like this. I must admit he was right. Earlier this year I was playing a tournament with a close friend in a best ball scramble format. And having learned how to bump and run a soft chip shot helped our score. We didn't win but it's nice to know that my chip left us with a tap in putt to par was great.
i had two 20 yard chip in's in a 9 hole game the other day , i used to bend my right arm now i keep it straight on backswing and downswing and put my feet together changed my game
I finally feel I have the right set in my bag, Driver and Irons both. I certainly need to pay more attention to this part of the game (short game) where there is so much opportunity. Checking my recent scores this is where I can with some practice gain 2-3 strokes. Thanks Rick for another great lesson.
Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed *HIT LIKE* & *SHARE* the video to someone who would benefit from watching it!
Keep up the amazing work Rick!!. Doing a great job!

No joke I watched this the night before a round of golf and the next day I chipped one in on the 16th hole. Thanks Rick!
Great video Rick I’ll be sure to implement into my game
I have watched all your chipping tips over the years Rick! I still duff them. Oh well more practice needed
Very watchable which means very educational, love it

I finally feel I have the right set in my bag, Driver and Irons both. I certainly need to pay more attention to this part of the game (short game) where there is so much opportunity. Checking my recent scores this is where I can with some practice gain 2-3 strokes. Thanks Rick for another great lesson.
