The BaKalanga or TjiKalanga speaking people are predominantly found in areas of South-Western Zimbabwe, northern and north-western Botswana. In Zimbabwe, the BaKalanga have been around the areas of Bulilima-Mangwe, Tsholotsho, and Matobo Districts for over a thousand years. In this documentary, we get to learn about the history, food, rain-making functions, and important cultural lessons about the BaKalanga. Interesting to note is the role played by their last king, Tjibundule in encountering soldiers from the Mutapa State, the importance of rain-making ceremonies and shrines such as Manyangwa, Njelele, Zhilo to name but a few. For the BaKalanga, rain-making ceremonies have been part of their culture since time immemorial and this ritual is performed just before the start of the rainy season. The Wosana plays an important role in asking for rain.
Within the food dimension, we get to learn the importance of Nzembwe (pearl millet) within their culture, the modalities involved in preparing nyembe (leaves of black-eyed beans), and the diverse fruit collection involving matamba, matogwe and n’hehe. On the breakfast side, we get to learn how the juice of mpale (dried melon) was utilized as a form of tea, which was consumed with Tjimoni (a mixture of beans, groundnuts and peanuts) or Samoni. Our guests also share their personal experiences growing up and how herding cattle was an important life lesson, both for girls and boys. Cattle wasn’t just seen as livestock but an important platform for learning several life lessons like; patience, time management and discipline.

I'm a Kalanga living in Soweto. On the paternal side, grandfather is Kalanga from a village called Hanlapkhane in Botswana, he married my xhosa grandmother from Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. On the maternal side, grandfather keMopedi from Gaphasha and he married my grandmother from Tshikwarane in Venda. I really find myself privileged to be from these four nations. Watching this video brough back a lot of childhood memories and the food shown here my dad would bring home for us from his trips to Botswana. Till this day I cannot speak the language as it was not spoken much around us, however I do understand... This just reminded me of my Xhosa grandmother who mastered the Kalanga language and I feel like today I will sleep well as there was a connection with my indigenous language and seeing that food. If you can do more videos of the Kalanga origins and the Mapungubwe Kindom. Also you are right in saying the language is similar to Tshivenda and Sepedi. I've heard some of my Venda relatives refer to BaKalanga as boMalume and also been told that they originate from the Kalanga people. Please also look into that part of the history. Sibongile Dube

My surname is Nkalanga I’m from South Africa🇿🇦 (Mpumalanga), I was raised by my mother’s side after my parents separated (Swati speaking) I grew up believing I’m Swati as there are also Nkalanga people speaking fluent Swati and Zulu. A few years back I reconnected with my father and it is today that I learned I’m not Swati I am a KHALANGA❤️!
I’m willing to learn more about my culture, language and practices. If you’re reading this comment with the knowledge and history I’m keen to know about, please school me!

You guys from Mpumalanga, Swaziland and Mozambique have a very important history about Kalanga/Khalanga/Kgalaka, in fact history of Southern Africa. I am also not Pedi, but Mokgalaka. We are many across different "tribes", we are the nation of Southern Africa. These mentioned places are also the ones to link Koni/Ngoni, Ronga/Roka, Tonga/Thonga and Kalanga. Most Kalanga, especially from Mbezi/Mbhedzi/Mpedi, Ngwenya/Bakwena are Ronga (rainmakers) by origin. Please help there and research about the Khalanga that side

Bakalanga are the pioneers of that vast land from Lubombo (Limpopo) up to Gwembe (zambezi or Kasambabezi) which was called Mapungubwe at that time. Only bakalanga built their homes with stones that is why Great Zimbabwe was named Nzi Mabgwe. Stone build monument / ruins can be traced to all ruins that Bakalanga lived during them all old days.
The likes of our great Kalanga Leaders like Madlazwegwendo, Madabhane, Malambadzibwa, Tjibundule ruled that place peacefully.
Karanga people are bakalanga with Karanga name which was shonalised same applies to most of our Kalanga areas now changed in ndebele names. Eg Lupane means Lu pane, a place where bakalanga meet baTongo doing barter trade. Ndoku pa undi pabo. Patinohangana tipana koyi lu pane

They say all Shona dialects branched off Kalanga first bantu settlers on the Zimbabwe plateau, real name for Shona language is Karanga with an R. I heard everything they were saying...99% was shona...the difference was just accents and pronounciation..in the same way Manyika is different to Zezuru or to Korekore to vhitori [karanga]

@J.x.m.kVenda definitely, Kalanga are an offshot of the present day Vendas. Mapungubwe Kingdom run by King Shiriyedenga. The Kalangas/karangas who built Great Zimbabwe, Khami ruins etc came from Mapungubwe Kingdom after it became overcrowded there are similar structures there but much older. We share ancestors with Vendas ..we all came from them.

There's no language or dialect called Shona. That term got coined to refer to people in the 1930s referring to a people who herded the hard mashona cattle. The Mashona cattle got their name from the raiding indunas who got perplexed by the way the cattle survived in muddy areas. They called them amaswina - which later became a derogatory for the Mhari people for their tendancy to disappear into the muddy hills during clashes between indunas and chief Matsveru's regiments. Until President Banana's 1982 Gore Reshandurazvinhu changes, the word shona could not be referred to the southern Masvingo people without offence.
In the same way, Karanga was a religious system of the Rozvi people and not a language. The Kalanga people are predominantly Lozi/Rozvi, VaMangwe, Nambya etc. The now called Karangas include, VaMhari (who are actually descentants of VaBuya of Mtoko), VaMhazi, VaDuma, VaHera (Banzure people) etc. There's actually no unified Chikaranga language. They're all dielects of either the Rozvi or the arriving VaBuye people from the Mtoko area, or VaMangwe or a mixture of everything especially in the southern side of Masvingo where you find a mix of Shava, Shumba, Moyo, Dziva totems living as neighbours. They all have different roots.
We need to correct the miseducation.

@@Pazvagwamunhumashokoanowanda languages evolves over time we now call it shona, key word PRESENT DAY Shona. Remember we were all bantu way back speaking bantu language, over time through migration and mixing with others we have evolved into dozens of different bantu languages across large part Africa not intelligible to each other.

@@Pazvagwamunhumashokoanowanda We had kingdoms, in history we refer to them Shona Kingdoms Great Zimbabwe Kingdom, Munhumutapa Kingdom, Rozvi Kingdom, Torwa State/ Butua Kingdom ...They obviously spoke a common language with different dialects that language is now the present day Shona language. All the dynasties of all these kingdoms were from the same clan...Mwenemutapas, Changamires and Mambos. Mzilikazi came and established Ndebele Kingdom over the South West so the Kalangas did not evolve with the rest Karanga dialects as they were mixing with the Nguni and cut off from the rest of Karangas

@@AFRICA_THE_NOW_AND_THE_FUTURE What is 'Great Zimbabwe' kingdom? Who was the king of this Shona Kingdom?
Mzilikazi only arrived around 1840, how much 'evolving' do you think happened in this very short period?
All Bantu kingdoms were organized around totems until the reserve settlements and urbanization. Language on the other hand, was a different thing, it was possible to have different dialects within the same totem line and kingdom. Chikaranga/kalanga was a religion, not a tribe. It was a way of life.
Let's learn our roots instead of using fantacy imaginations.

In which tribe did Moyo pleople originate . If Kalanga people have existed for more than a thousand years it means Kalanga could be where original Moyos originate
