Women created the patriarchy. And still are even post-Barbie without even realizing it. THIS is what REAL critical thinking is: women only seek the best of the best men to mate with. As a result men overachieve to be qualified by women and ended up dominating most areas of life just to get women's approval. As women have gained more power, their hypergamous need hasn't gone away, but they want to dismantle this "patriarchy," the VERY thing creating the men they want and that they benefit from. Women want men who are on their level or better, men only really try in life deep down in the hopes they can attract a woman... If ANY achievement you have in life is due to this "patriarchy" (which is characterized as sexist/oppressive), then the logical thing to do as a "lover" or "ally" of women would be to sit back and let women have their time to shine, correct? But oh wait, women STILL want men on their level or higher... Sooooo... Women have not only painted men into a corner, but themselves. Now they wonder why men are staying home playing video games and quitting on life. You've given us no other options and the safest/most peaceful is to escape from this insane contradictory misandry. Feminism today has given men and women a no win scenario other than to I guess guilt trip successful men to be simps for them... But they've successfully disincentivized and demoralized every new generation of men from trying... Sooo....
Where are all the good men? Now ignoring women in one fashion or another because there's literally no point anymore in trying. They're never satisfied, they still think they're oppressed and it's men's or this (actually very gynocentric) western "patriarchy's" fault. So the top men are fxcking around, never having to settle because all women want them because they're so rare and you have bottom men not even trying, staying home with parents playing video games to escape reality.
Congrats, women. You won and now we see why successful civilizations slowly collapse over time. You confuse, demoralize, shame and disincentivize men (who have an out-group bias FOR women and argue IN FAVOR of their rights because they're in such a successful/free society and raised with it's values) from keeping society afloat because they realize it's all sacrifice with no appreciation or reward. In fact, just condemnation and expected self-flagellation. And for what? Building/maintaining/protecting a society FOR women and children to thrive in? You see the paradox now?

I also think that she has no experience with ugliness. Even when she thinks she’s “not pretty” later on, she never says ugly, she just feels like she’s lost smth- which turns out to be her own sense of self.
I think that’s important bc when she looks at ppl, she expects beauty, endless variations of beauty. And so it’s particularly special when she looks at the elderly woman and sees simply a different kind of beauty, not anything lacking. It’s not like seeing a woman and comparing her to who she used to be. It’s seeing her exactly as she is right now, and the goodness of that. It’s like, this is “senior barbie” and she is beautiful.

According to the trivia section on IMDb, "Greta Gerwig refused to cut a scene with the older lady by holding her ground against studio executives saying "I love that scene so much, and the older woman on the bench is the costume designer Ann Roth. She's a legend. It's a cul-de-sac of a moment, in a way - it doesn't lead anywhere. And in early cuts, looking at the movie, it was suggested, 'Well, you could cut it. And actually, the story would move on just the same.' And I said, 'If I cut the scene, I don't know what this movie is about." "

@@andrewcrowder4958 i understand all of that but was meaning that portion of it aside as it was not what we focused on while watching it. My girls are too young to appreciate it or fully understand it, so was not the takeaway emotion or lesson. What Nikki cried at was when they were showing the emotions and feelings of the daughters and mothers reacting to moments together, and her own personally with their kid growing up too fast and not needing her anymore.
As part of the film, I thought it was great, especially when tongue in cheek and with small jabs comically to show the reality of a lot of it through the eyes of the world where it seems ridiculous and to the real world equivalent where it was done in the same way. The interesting thing is that there were no bad guys in this movie. There was no villain. Ken wasn’t a bad person. Will Farrell’s character wasn’t bad. Part of the point is that there are a lot of good men out there but they can be victims of this system too. They’re told that their worth is defined by their job or their girlfriend or their body type. And even men who are “enlightened” can fall into these traps just like even smart strong capable women can.

The use of the song "Push" was a perfect representation of that. "Push" is about someone who was in a toxic relationship, and as a result ended up becoming toxic themselves in their next relationship. It fits Ken so perfectly: he spent his whole life in a society where he (and all [MK]en) are treated as inferior, unimportant accessories to women/Barbies -- the way women are treated in the real world, although somehow to an even more exaggerated extent. So when he finally gets a chance to feel respected, he latches onto that, but does so using the only social framework he knows: treating people as worthless.
That's something I think some people don't get about the movie: it's about promoting equality, not villainizing Ken or putting men down as a whole.

I love how both of their reactions were completely opposite, you can clearly see the movie talking to her and him being like an Alien watching it. Even her reaction of disgust to Ken discovering the Patriarchy and him laughing at this part was actually hilarious. I loved watching this React, was the best because it was really a reaction and you can see how still they watched two completely different movies, and the cherry on top is her reaction to Gloria speech and him finally becoming serious and dry swallowing because it is tough to be put in our position. This is why this movie is a master piece.
I watched with my partner too, and even though he is the most feminist he can be, he got out of the movie theater quiet and asked “do you feel like that?” Immediately I thought, it worthed every penny, with one movie he got the knowledge I have been trying to show him for years. BTW he listens to “I’m just Ken” everyday to the point I don’t like this song anymore… there is a Christmas version, he showed me… and after the movie, he is more comprehensive if I just make comparison to any scene from the movie.

'Did you think the Barbie movie was gonna make you cry?' is pretty much what happened to me. I went to see it with my mom and we did NOT expect these gut punches. We're both grown-ass adult women, I'm 36 years old, she's 63, we went because of the nostalgia of playing with Barbie when I was a kid, and because it seemed like a fun thing to watch. We got out of the theatre with tears on our faces and just hugged for a real long time, called grandma from the way home and scheduled to come over for coffee the next day. Like, even if you ignore all the feminist messages of this movie, it's still just a very lovely piece of media about the meaningful relationships between women - friendship and familial alike.

As to the kids watching the movie, my 10 yr old son watched it with me. He liked it, and America’s woman speech, Ken’s patriarchy rant, and mom and daughters little talk, he understood most of it and he took something away from it. And he laughed mostly at Will Ferrel because a lot of jokes were over his head lol I think it’s important to teach lessons early, even little boys. I think Steven misunderstood the message of this film. This wasn’t about hating men - it’s about how patriarchy is bad for EVERYONE. How patriarchy mad the Kens just as unhappy as the women. This was never meant to be a kid’s movie. It is a film aimed at women who grew up with Barbie.
Edit: also I want to add that you cannot tell an HONEST story about women’s lived experiences without talking about patriarchy. Because it is something every woman deals with. Telling that story through the lens of Barbie - a doll who most girl’s played with and who for a LOT of women represent both good and bad things makes it a more a digestible story. This was never just about the doll itself

It's amazing how that speech at the end applies for us men too. It's exactly how we feel. Lead, but be a team player, be fit but can't say you want to be fit, have muscles but not enough that it intimidates women or threatens other men because you're supposed to be part of a brotherhood. Have money. Can't fall, can't fail. And answer for the errors made for other men and it'll always all be our fault. It made me understand women more, because it showed me that they feel exactly how we feel. The movie was great on showing how our system created by the patriarchy is harmful to us all, men & women. I've watched it like 4 times now, took all of my nieces to it lol

    • @Saphthings
      @Saphthings 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

@@tayzk5929 A man can only feel attacked by this movie when he sees masculinity and toxic masculinity as the same. The system IS patriarchy. If you think it is not, it's because you see "normal" as "male". That's the only possibility. Because if you see this overwhelmingly biased system as unbiased, it's because things revolve around yourself to yourself.
It'd be like a lion sitting with a group of deer saying the system isn't rigged in his favor. If he can't see it it's because he feels the system where he's the only one not in danger is so normal and correct that he can't recognize it.
In order to break away from that you'll have to truly live in the shoes of another, and the first step is acquiring the skill of "understanding without agreeing". Work on a topic that's not as close to you, like what do people think about ____. Then work on understanding the other side, without needing to agree with them. Truly understand them, read about it, pretend you're them agreeing as them. Without you needing to agree.
Pick a topic like white privilege, black lives matter, homophobia, social rights, refugees. Once you learn to understand others even if you don't agree with them, then you'll be in the right step towards being more sympathetic.

What I love about this movie is that even if is indeed about women of course, it talk about the way men are viewed by society too. The speech Barbie do at the end to Ken is important, because just like us too many little boys grow up being told "you're a boy, you can't do this and that". We're all the same, we all need to find ourselves and know how to fit in this world without going crazy. And the fact that they put them at the same level at the end with Barbie's speech it is for real a deep and important thing. It helps both women and men to understand that at the end of the day we all need to only find our place in the world as we want, feel free to do that by our own, not as just men or women but as humans.
We feel like men can already do that, but having men in my family and watching them struggle the same it always made me wonder since I was little how much everyone of us is crushed by society.
I loved it, as a woman with an amazing mother and father who always told me to be myself in my life, and taught me to make choices for me without listening to people who can put me down or judge me, this at least for me was a really beautiful message. Again, we have to respect us as humans not as women or men because believe it or not, expecially in the years we live, this is irrelevant in our life.

Oh Nikki, I know how you feel about your kid pulling away, just remember they come back, and being friends as adults with your child is one of the biggest best blessings you can't even imagine, you can't get there without going through this so don't worry, you will be so happy with the bond you have once she's a bit older.

Aw, Nikki honey, I really felt for you there. That you're sad to be losing that connection makes me so happy for them, that you love them so much. Such a beautiful thing to share that with us, sending big hugs 💕🌠

It’s very touching hearing your insights on being parents of two girls growing up. As I was listening to you I thought you should watch Lady Bird. It’s the film debut of the director of this movie and I think it’s going to move you both in a good way.
It’s out of what you regularly watch on your channel but I just think you’ll love it.
Edit: love the inclusion of the live comments and questions ❤

I saw this movie just a couple weeks ago and it was more hilarious than I could have imagined. Until the end. I'm a single guy with no kids and even I was tearing up at that part with all the old family movies. I loved everything about this movie. All the comedy makes all the serious bits hit that much harder, I loved that about it.

According to the trainer, directors and anyone else, Ryan Gosling is a dream to work with, never complains and he really is built like that.

Could have done without all the eyerolls from Steven, but I appreciate him taking the time to watch this in the first place. This film isn't for everyone but it hits hard and powerfully for a lot of us. The depth was welcomed.

I feel like my overall opinion is fair regardless of my eye rolls, which Gray is correct, mostly for how way over the top the movie is.

I mean is reaction was pretty good, since the whole movie doesn't show any good/positive representation of men. All mention of what men struggles with are either a punchline/butt of a joke (dumb, useless, jealous, vain, being a bro) or brushed over (barely mentioned or sandwich between patriarchy is bad/women as it worst speech). They only mentioned bad women once in the entire movie and again it was sandwich between men are this and men are that points of Sasha's speech. So it was extremely polarized making most of the movie polorizing and exaggerated.
Even America's speech about what women are is over the top and most of those requirements are pushed on women by other women, but they don't mention that part. Blaming Barbie for women's poor self esteem is ridiculous, bc no one said you have to look like her, just bc women assumed that it was what men wanted women to be (even tho a women created Barbie) isn't the dolls fault but women's fault for assuming it was. Like there isn't one point in the movie where there is women accountability for the bad experience women have. It's always blamed on patriarchy (men, since the term is mainly about men) or men. When a women is bad, it's "internal misogyny, men manipulation, patriarchy, etc." It's never that women is like that, it has to be a result of men's actions/patriarchy.

17:00 - Nikki, I cried in exactly the same spot. And I don't even have kids. I was having a good time till then. That's when I realized this movie is serious. I literally had to pause for a couple of minutes to catch my breath till the shocked tears slowed.
42:00 - And I cried again here too my first time around, just as hard as you did. Wow. I was telling a friend about crying twice at the movie and she laughed because she can't imagine how well-done it is. I can't convince her to see it.
This thing could have sucked so hard if left to Hollywood committee. Instead it's a surprisingly great movie by an award-bait creative team.

From a 20-something daughter looking back- as the 11-year-old who pulled away, pull harder. If my mom hadn't stood by me unwaveringly, I would not be here today. Remind her she's beautiful, talented, and beyond anything any middle schooler could ever conceptualize. Have faith in your motherhood, she still loves you. The only difference now is she's aware of the expectations of society instead of just yours. You are a good mom, remind yourself of that.

it’s not abt this movie saying all men behave that way. or saying that “good guys exist” it’s not attacking men. it’s simply telling what patriarchy does. and patriarchy is very real. men are the default. men are given more power over women. men make more money than women. it’s all unfair and not equal whatsoever. barbie land was something created to give girls and women a safe space to feel empowered. there are PLENTY of films where men are put on the pedestal and given the light. this movie represents the women. and in a way that doesn’t revolve around a man either. so it bugs me when men get all irked or feel attacked in any way shape or form because there are literally SO many movies that depict women in such negative lights that men can’t even let this ONE movie be for the women and not abt the men. if women can go on abt their lives after watching movie after movie where the woman revolves around the man, or is an asset to a man or only talks to other women if it’s abt a man, and not complain then why can’t men not complain abt this movie? u know? men literally have everything and they still want more!!! replay that montage that ken saw when he got to the real world. men have SO much representation and love in this world. but the women are still fighting for their rights today. and u don’t need to explain that ur a “good guy” or ur family has “good guys” it’s NOT ABT MEN. period. this movies in the view from a women. and this is how most women feel!!! so men will never understand because they are NOT WOMEN. listen to women’s voices. listen to their stories. dont dismiss them. men need to be more like allen also. acknowledging the struggles women face in this world and using their privilege to support them!!!

All of the characters in the movie were real Mattel dolls. If you watch the credits close, they show the real dolls, the Allan doll actually says on the packaging "I'm Ken's best friend, all of his clothes fit me" The pooping dog was real, and believe it or not, "Growing Up Skipper" was real too. When you moved her arm, not only did her boobs grow, but she got a little taller as well! Ahhh growing up in the 70's and 80's was so much fun, because there weren't really any rules. It is hard for us that did grow up in those times now, because every little thing seems to upset somebody. It was just a much more fun time, as if everybody was in on the jokes.

As a 25-year-old, I sobbed when Nikki said "my eleven-year-old is pulling away :( " This movie made me think how as an adolescent I could have been nicer to my mom because it was her first time raising a girl, a child, and at the time I wasn't aware she was just trying. This movie gave me a profound appreciation for women and mothers. Great reaction!

The movie making a billion $ frequently confuses the heck out of many (not all) men. Many men think the best thing about the movie was Ryan Gosling instead of the main story arc for Barbie. The movie was made to primarily speak to women and their issues. Many women are feeling unseen most of the time and the movie was able to make them feel seen and heard which is a big part of why so many women saw the movie multiple times. Some male reactors have even said that there was “too much” emphasis on Barbie’s “issues” and “self-actualization” and there should have been more Ken and emphasis on his mental health and expectations. Like, WHAT? 😅 The film director industry is primarily male dominated and yet many men felt the one movie directed by a woman about a female doll that females (and effeminate males) primarily played with should have been more MALE focused? Why don’t men just petition their male directors to make such a movie; not about blowing things up, hunting a killer terrorizing a small town, nor trying to plot how to trick their way into bed with a female? Instead, make a movie for Ken and show him growing and learning about himself, maybe. Why should Gretchen change her project for a movie called, “Barbie” but then focus on Ken? Because the men don’t understand what the movie did/does for women they are constantly doubting that it “deserves” its billion+ $. They’ve even been mad that Oppenheimer didn’t make as much $; the stories are not comparable and there is no need to tear a woman nor her works down because it doesn’t speak to them. Like how, again, (not all but many) men question the success of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. 🤷🏽‍♀️What’s up with that?
    Le sigh.😔
