Don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but the Author of the book series has been accused by some fans of a movie called "Battle Royale" from 2000 of straight stealing this concept, I as a Writer myself can't help but see the similarities. It's far more violent & insane even if you never review the movie I believe once you see it this movie will seem like a children's film.
I recommend the honest trailers, pitch meetings, and hishe of hunger games when you complete the saga.
I'm very empathic and sometimes the weight of the world brings me down. Seeing your reactions helps me feel less alone in this world and I hope you know I think you both are very strong.
When you mentioned if squid games got the idea from hunger games, I don’t think so. If anything the hunger games has similarities to battle royale (2001) which is a Japanese movie about a high school class every year being chosen to battle to the death. The interesting thing about battle royale compared to other death game movies is the students knew each other since elementary and this movie catapulted the death game genre world wide.
@@randall-thehorrorwriter To be fair, other than 'kids forced to fight to the death in a televised arena' the two have very little else in common, especially as the series goes on. The setting and world-building and reason for the games is also entirely different. A premise itself cannot be copywritten (such as 'people are forced by the government to fight to the death in an arena') it's the individual characters and how the story unfolds differently and other things that sets the two apart that's what's important.
In the book, the monster dogs were even more terrifying. They were "made out of" the dead tributes and so their eyes and facial features were recognizable.

they weren't made of them. they just resembled them. Katniss questions if they used the tributes bodies but the bodies are sent back home to their families if I remember correctly. Still creepy as all hell though and awful the gov thought to do that..
*correction I looked it up and they used the dna of the tributes to make them so I was kinda wrong on that. I was assuming you meant they were made of the tributes bodies and morphed into the mutts.
One of the tragic things about Haymitch is that him being a mentor means that he's seen tributes come and go over the years, being forced to mentor them, only to see them die year after year.
It’s like a constant torment. You win after all that trauma, but then have to relive it over and over through the others. No wonder he drinks.
And he lost his family, so that scene where he saw that family and their children messing around took him back to that moment. And the sight of that fancy looking family and the tributes he’s mentoring, put him back into that mindset to help out so he begins networking.

@@KS-xk2so [Spoiler Alert] Yes, Haymich won by using the forcefield at the edge of the arena. He found out that if you tried throw something over the cliff at the edge of the arena it would be rebounded back up into the arena. His opponent threw an axe at him, Haymich ducked, and it went over the edge of the arena, rebounded, and hit her in the face. Snow didn't like that Haymich took advantage of the arena and had his family killed.
Yeah he's the only district 12 tribute to have won/survived
Rue breaks me everytime...
It's even more heartbreaking if you read the book...they don't show it in the movie, but all the dead players are airlifted by those ships with a big grabby claw and that's why Katniss surrounded Rue in flowers, she knew she would be picked up and sent home with them. The people of 11 don't riot right away like they do in the movie after she salutes and whistles to the camera...instead, she gets another parachute, sent by 11, containing bread from home that they had saved up to send in for Rue.

In the books, I liked the most that Katniss's urge to protect Rue comes from the resemblance she saw of Prim in Rue. She could have been his sister, sweet and innocent, having to protect herself in this awful world. She, even in stressful moments, called her Prim in her mind. She was devastated when she lost Rue. Probably will have lost her will of living if it wasn't for the new rule and the opportunity to protect someone else. Also, that was the first time a District sent something to another District. Of course, Snow was livid. Districts started to unite.

something I never noticed until rewatching recently was when Gale was saying goodbye to Katniss, she says she can hunt but only animals, implying she can't kill them because she has humanity while Gale says "it's no different" as if he means "once it becomes a life or death situation, they mean nothing" which I feel like foreshadowed his actions later on
Oh for sure. The whole franchise honestly does a great job of foreshadowing what Gale will eventually do. I love during the reaping when Snow says “we will never know this treason again” it focuses on on Gale looking mad as hell. He was always prepared to go to war
This is one of those extremely rare franchises where the sequel is actually better than the first. So happy you're reacting to these!

I always have a lot of respect for a movie's first outing, to go from 0 to 60 in terms of world building, but yeah, there really is something quite exceptional about the second movie. It retreads things, but wow, somehow the cinematography just really pops out.

Fun fact about the mockingjay:
The capitol created jabberjays to spy on the districts and record conversations with their people. The people caught on and started to spread lies to the capitol. The capitol found out and released the jabberjays into the wild thinking they would die off. Instead they didn't. They mated with mocking birds resulting in the "Mockingjay". Mockingjays don't record conversations but mimic song like in the movie with Rue. The mockingjay is symbolic because its a slap in the face to the capitol. A rebellion.

The symbol Jabberjay’s and Mockingjay’s play in the prequel truly solidifies their meaning even further. Weapons of war turned into something unintentional which turned into symbols of hope.

When it comes to the reaping in the books: the poorer families can opt to put their names in the yearly drawing additional times to extra rations to feed their families. Gales family was large and very poor and he had his name added many extra times. Katniss also got multiple extra rations at the cost of her name being added. Peeta, a bakers son never went hungry so his name was even less likely to get pulled. This was Prims first year, her name had one of the least likely chances of being pulled. This scene speaks a lot to fate and destiny.

I’d just like to point out that “foxface” as Katniss calls her, (the girl who died from the poisonous berries) could identify every single plant at the training part of the movie and had amazing strategy the whole game, she definitely knew the berries she ate were poisonous, there was no way she didn’t, foxface killed herself because she knew she wouldn’t win
That's an interesting difference between the first book and the movie. If I remember correctly it's never clear to Katniss whether "foxface" girl knew the berries were deadly.
I think the book made it clear that Fox face was very intuitive and observant.. She was really smart and because Peeta picked those berries to eat without any fear, she picked the berries also thinking that they were safe. Peeta's naivety/ignorance is basically what killed her. She was "Peeta's kill."
@@SandUtil i don't even think she picked the berries herself, the only reason katniss even knew thats how she died was because she noticed some of her and peetas food was missing. At least in the books that is
Actually in that sequence in the movie, she's just playing a massive game of Match lol she's super smart, absolutely. But that sequence just shows she's super quick rather than intuitive. At least that's how I look at it.

Rue's death is one of the most emotional things in this whole series. Book or movie, it never fails to make me cry.
Me too! No matter how many times I watch it, even if it’s just a clip of that one part, I still cry. I cried in the books too. It always surprises me when I see people reacting to this movie and don’t get emotional on that scene.

It was a powerful scene because Katniss memorialized her and it inspired Rue’s district to rebel.
The only thing about the movies that I wasn’t crazy about is that they didn’t really give Peeta the credit they should have. In the movies they make it look like he is completely dependent on Katniss while in the books he can hold his own in the games.
Yeah, it has been a very long time since I seen the movies, and seen it now with the books perspective in mind, they really did a poor job with Peeta.
Peeta was basically useless in the movie. But Peeta in the book was basically a badass
Yeah, they even left out how seriously injured he was and how he was actively killing himself in the end to save Katniss by undoing his bandages and bleeding to death. Like, this boy straight up lost a leg for her.

Also the fact that Katniss almost dies of dehydration. That's survival 101 you see in any tv program. And I didn't expect that from the book.
At least in the books, Katniss wasn't described to be very likable and she wasn't very charming. So when Peeta kinda threw in the love story it really made people in the capitol become more invested in the two of them. I'm sure when he confessed to liking her he wasn't thinking of that but in the books they did describe that like something that helped her get sponsors and survive in the end.
Actually I’m the books it’s not that katniss is unlikeable. It’s stated that her district and a lot of her schoolmates admired her. She just didn’t see it. It’s only haymitch (who sees himself in her) that says that lol

I remember in the books, Katniss putting flowers around Rue was a big middle finger to the Capital. When a tribute dies, they're supposed to walk away so the airships could collect the body. Katniss refused to walk away until she put Rue to rest.
One thing from the books that I'm not sure if it was directly mentioned in the movie is that Peeta was always trying to lead the others away from Katniss and protect her, he always wanted her to be the winner. He also DID really have a crush on her from before, he really is the more pure-hearted and genuine person. He's one of my favorite characters and yes Catching Fire is the best, it's really so amazing and as close to the book as they could get.
Of course, Peeta is definitely the best of them all !!
****BOOK SPOILER*** Its like the bread scene, in the movie it made him seem like he just threw bread in the mud for her when if I remember correctly, in the books they were only 12, not even I think Katniss was like a week from being 12, and Peeta's mom smacked him so hard it bruised his face, all for making a mistake of burning the bread... which he made on purpose if I'm no mistaken, so he could "throw it out" but really he wanted Katniss to have it because he knew her family was starving.

Peeta was so much better in the books
Peeta didn't just confess his love for katniss to get sympathy he actually did love her. And he didn't want to die with any big regrets like not telling the girl he loves how he feels and he also wanted to show the capital that they don't own him.
They have so much more connection in the books then in the movies. Adding, we know in the books he first sees her the first day of kindergarten and she stands up on a table in class and sings. His dad apparently had a crush on her mom when they were little but her mom left the "rich" side of town to marry a poor man. and he always liked her but never said anything or did anything till the moment with the bread.
Also Peeta didn't confess his love for Katniss to get sympathy for him, it was to get sympathy for her. It's subtle and yes Katniss doesn't "get it" in the book or the movie but later on, book!Katniss gets to understand it better. Katniss isn't "doing fine on her own" in the Capitol and to the public. They don't care about her (or Peeta) until Peeta confesses his love to Katniss and they "build" this love story between them. *ALL* the sponsors Katniss and Peeta get in the Arena is because of this love story. It's literally what Haymitch said, to survive, they needed sponsors. To get sponsors, Peeta found the idea of confessing his love to Katniss (and even she doesn't know if it's true or not to begin with). Katniss has as much to gain (or to lose) in this as Peeta, that's why she plays along, when in the movie, they're making this out to be "Katniss playing along to save Peeta". No no no. I'm tired of Peeta being shown as weak in this movie when Suzanne Collins wrote a way more ambiguous bond between these two and a much more interesting character with Peeta. And I feel movie viewers don't get it because Katniss isn't shown struggling in the Arena (except when Rue saves her). In the book, Katniss almost dies A LOT and not just because the Game Makers "cheated" and threw fire bowls at her. Her whole struggle to get water (DAYS without water) is just awesome in the book and it's just disappointing how they made it look so easy in the movie (esp after the woman training them explicitely stated that most of the Tributes would die to natural conditions, why show only kids killing each others, then?)
The sequel Catching Fire is my favorite story of the trilogy. And, for non-book readers, Peeta was one of my favorite characters because he's the purest and most solid guy in the series. In the first one, he only joined the one team because he wanted to keep them away from Katniss and thought it was the best way to do that. In CF, he even comments that Katniss has people who need her whereas "no one needs him". Slight spoiler, what happens to him in Mockingjay BROKE ME.
Peeta is easily the best character in the books.

The first two books were much better then the movies (even though I also loved to movies). But I have to say, I like the way they handled the Mockingjay story in the movies over the book for the most part. Especially the way katniss treated peeta.

In the books, Cato was wearing armor that protected everything except his face. The “mutts” were chewing on him all night, and finally he begs katniss to kill him, and she does. But Peeta had a tourniquet on his leg that was held in place by the last arrow. So he had to give katniss the arrow to end Cato, risking bleeding out, and he ends up losing his leg. I loved y’all’s reaction. Still, even though I’ve seen this movie several times, I STILL cry when Rue dies.
Also, if you love the movies, I highly suggest the books. Literally all of them are good, while the last movie of this franchise gets…not as good. I’m not saying this as a “you should read the books if you’re reacting to the movie”, but just letting you know that the books are excellent and super worth the read (to me).
Yeah I’ve heard that the books are a lot more better than the movies and a lot more darker so I plan to check them out sometime.
@@mrswaninator3540 In all fairness, I absolutely love the movies and I think they did a fantastic job adapting the books. There are several things that were left out but I understand why. They could have explained a few things better, as well, but there were other things the movies did better. Effie and Cinna, for example 💖 They were immaculate.
I just read the book it doesn’t have the bit about peetas leg, maybe my book is different?
@@happydog2905 I haven’t read the books in years, but I’m certain that when katniss drops the nest on the careers and katniss got stung and was half hallucinating and Cato was coming, Peeta was able to hold Cato off but got a really deep cut in his leg that he was dying from. Katniss was able to get the medicine to fight off the infection in the cornucopia, but he was still dealing with an injury. Also, I think the mutts got him in the end, I don’t remember that part for sure. All I know is that he had a tourniquet tied with one of katniss’ arrows, and it was needed at the end to end the games and put Cato out of his misery.m the dogs were chewing on him all night and Peeta was bleeding. So, to end it sooner, they took the last arrow from Peetas tourniquet to kill Cato. Peeta ended up losing his leg in he books.
I had read the books beforehand and I still freaking sobbed at Rue’s death. The way she was portrayed reminded me so much of my sister (who happened to be the same age as Rue at the time) that I literally felt like I was watching my sister die.
i love how you guys had katniss' POV on peeta etc for so much of this movie - her own bias and survivalist distrusting nature is such an interesting part of her narrative bias in the books especially

Yeah, that was one of the things I found interesting about the Hunger Games too.
Even though Katniss is the narrator, there are lots of times when we, the reader, understand a situation that she clearly doesn't. For instance how the people around her feel about her.
They should have stuck with that (the movie) esp considering they got some of the "other" parts wrong. It's obvious that the game makers didn't give Katniss an 11 to "reward her", it was to pose her as a threat to the other guys so that they'd team up against her (which worked) and kill her faster. Haymitch and Peeta knew that, that's why Peeta allies himself with the Careers as soon as they're in the Arena. NO ONE in the Capitol would reward a girl from D12 shooting arrows at them. They made Seneca Crane act like an idiot who had to be corrected by Snow all the time, when Seneca Crane was Master of the Games for years. He looks like fool during the entire movie and I wouldn't care that much if it was just the character but it makes the whole Capitol appear way less threatening than they really are, thus making Katniss' little rebellion at the end to save Peeta, less than what it actually was in the books. It's also a disservice to Plutarch on Catching Fire and [SPOILER] on the other movies. Their schemes are made too obvious in the movies: I know viewers need everything laid down for them but imagine the plot twist of Catching Fire if you had only the parts in the Arena...
Also the 1st movie kinda made Katniss to be a Mary Sue, I mean we think everyone likes her because Haymitch kinda connects with her and Cena does too (and Rue, and that's the point: all three are "outcasts", Rue is a young girl from one of the most ignored Districts, Haymitch is a drunk and Cena is literally the dude who stands up in the Capitol because he's basically invisible), but she's not "doing fine on her own" getting the people's attention and scores with the public and it doesn't really show in the movie, while in the books, Katniss is very much aware of that. Here, it looks like she's paranoid and doesn't see that people adore her, but that's not the case. She's very average to the public's eyes, especially compared to the Careers who are beautiful, talented AND who can talk in front of a camera (they should have been as charismatic as Finnick is in the next movie) and Katniss' invisibility during the whole pre-game thing is mostly related to the bias the people from the Capitol have regarding her District (here, the movie erases mostly the question of racism, esp since Katniss *is supposed to be a WOC* ). That's why Peeta isn't "the dude making her look weak" when he says he loves her on tv, and that's basically WHY Peeta is an asset and why Katniss "plays along" with the couple thing. It's her survival just as much as it's his, she's not doing Peeta a favor when she kisses him and fights for his life, she's saving herself too and again... the movie is kinda meh about that, very cold feet at the idea of showing Katniss as anything but able to survive on her own, while her survival in the Arena is much more complicated in the book. The beginning of the movie is like "you'll need sponsors" and yet, every time they're shown needing sponsors, it's for Peeta. Katniss *survived* because of these sponsors too in the book.
Here Peeta is like a chain around her feet much more than an ally, while *even Katniss* recognizes him for what he can bring her in the Arena and what he does for her in the Arena. Also that's WHY the Capitol changes the rule: they are creating the love story too, because they need this to erase the scandal happening in District 11. They need the viewers to forget about Rue and focus on "couple dramaaa". That's why Katniss' bluff at the end works and that's why again, Seneca Crane's scenes DON'T work in the movie: he's not stupid enough to say stupid stuff like "eweyone wikes an undewdog" NO. Bro changes the rules because they need to erase Rue's existence from both the public's memory and Katniss' memory, because Katniss carrying her grief during the rest of the game would have captured the public's attention, and ruined the games. Seneca Crane doesn't CARE about Katniss or Rue or Peeta. He cares about a precise scenario for his games and that's why Katniss and Peeta were able to survive at the end: they got them at their own game! And by tiny bits and scenes that shouldn't be there, the movie just rips some characters' decisions and actions and ruins their whole purpose in the story. In the movie, Seneca Crane has NO REASON to give Peeta and Katniss their ending, he shouldn't care. In the books, he's not saving them, he's saving his games by keeping the love story alive.
Also slight detail but there is also a problem with how the movie erases Katniss and Peeta getting disabled because of the Arena. Peeta loses a leg and Katniss is deaf from one ear for the rest of her life. Again, these are real scars from the Arena and they erase them in the movie, again, as if the Capitol hadn't left a mark on both Peeta and Katniss (except mental because Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are good actors).
@@MARYWTHER small corrections, yes Peeta looses his leg but Katniss's earing loss is fixed at the end of the first book.
One of my favorite smaller details about the movie is that you can see at the end how Cato realizes how awful the games truly are. He's been trained his whole life to kill and thought the games were all about glory and pride but he realizes right at the end that they're just entertainment and that he was bred to kill for nothing. Absolutely love it!

The whole Cato speech was so sad, he was raised to be a warrior, they convinced him and other children that being in the games was a sign of bravery but no, he realized he was a pig for slaughter :( such a young boy
Words cannot explain how amazingly perfect Donald Sutherland was for this role as President Snow.
He absolutely nails *every* single line he delivers, and steals each scene he is in. Every moment of his from the books is perfectly brought to life better than I had even imagined it in my head.
The man was just an absolute master class in acting, such a great casting choice.

True. But I think if you have read the books, there's hardly any competition starting with Catching Fire. The actual reasoning from Katniss's pov comes later after they've been through everything but it was evident pretty early on that he was the right one for her.
@Jermare yeah the Twilight movies did play up a triangle when there really wasn't one in the books. It was always Edward just like in a Harry Potter series they try to make you think that there could be something between Harry and Hermione when it was never the case.

@@frozenpiper2 i don't know about this. i felt like jacob was actually given a bigger chance in the books than in the movies. he was pretty much nullified in that aspect of the movies because she was so hellbent on edward but in the books he actually had a tiny minuscule chance
No one ever talks about Donald Sutherland's perfect portrayal of the wily, evil, survivor politician. He only gets better as the series goes on and his final scene was right on the money.
Yes! Sutherland shines as Snow. Perfect casting

I'm hard pressed to find a bad performance by Donald Sutherland in his long career.
I’ve lost count of the HG reactions I’ve watched, but yours is in my top two-completely blind, genuinely invested, emotional, totally understood the POVs of the main characters, and commented on filmmaking choices like the audio tricks and the choice to use handheld “shaky cams”. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

The dogs in the book are even more unsettling because they are modeled after the dead tributes. Worse thing is, since it's from Katniss 'point of view, there's this sick idea that they used the dead bodies and morphed them into these dogs through some disgusting experience.
I hate they left this detail out. It could have taken a minute to explain it.
@@Kimbrell That would have been a difficult effect to pull off at that time though. Human faces are really hard to do and make them look good even now. Sticking human faces onto a monster and making it look good, and then filming it in a way where you could see it in those night shots would have almost impossible.

I totally agree that the idea of dogs with human faces is something that you can write with just a handful of words, but to visually depict it in a way that looks clear, real, and not ridiculous... well... I think that would be nearly impossible.
Since they had to deviate from the books anyway, I wish they had changed them to tigers. For a couple of reasons. Firstly, it would be at least as scary as the mutts. Secondly, it might save them some time and money, since they could use some footage of real tigers. Thirdly, it would function as a reference to the real-life death games of the Roman Coliseum.
Haymitch was the Victor of the 50th hunger games. Other than him only one other victore had come out of 12 since the 10th games. He became a drunk after mentoring and sending children to their death for over 20 years
Snow also had his family killed for how he used the Arena forcefield to win the games which both upset Snow but also showed a potential weakness and or exploitative weakness of the area’s forcefield.

The scene where Peta is hiding with his face painted, has an interesting and terrifying story. When the make up was applied they had Josh lay down in position then the artists did his body work. After they finished everyone backed away to get ready for the shot, as Katniss approaches, a big ass venomous snake came up out of nowhere and nestled in right next to Josh's face. He had to lay there for over 2 hours while they tried to figure out how to get the snake away from him.

The movies kinda play up the “love triangle” more so than the books. Katniss doesn’t really mention liking either of the boys until later in the 2nd book.
Below is some background on peeta and Gale JUST from the first book:
Gale is her best friend, they grew up protecting eachother and hunting together and their fathers both died in the same mining accident. He supports his entire family by illegally hunting. He’s strong and an expert hunter. He’s funny and charming, but also very angry and views everything as black or white. She mentions that he is very handsome and girls flock to him. In the first book she mentions that she will probably marry him because that seems appropriate and practical, but she’s never really had that kind of interest in him or anyone, and at this point she loves him as she loves her family.
Peeta is the district baker’s son. He has older brothers, none of which volunteered for him. His mother often beats him. He’s very strong, kind, and very charismatic, great at talking and almost manipulating the crowd. People love him. He’s a painter and very strategic: someone else mentioned on here but everything he did in this book/movie was to save Katniss- he had every intention of her being the winner, he just didn’t want to lose himself in the process. The movie did a bad job at showing this, but he was very capable of holding his own during the games, and he spent most of the time leading the careers (Cato - Björn- and the others) away from Katniss. The first time he and Katniss ever spoke was when they were reaped for the games, but he did truly have a crush on her growing up. Side note- in the books, peeta loses his left leg after the games and Katniss is clawing at the walls trying to get to him while they operate, so it is very clear she at least cares about him.
I always thought of Katniss as aromantic. She never expresses romantic interest and her only priority, biggest and truest love was her sister. I think she came to love Peter and realized sharing her life with him helped her, which it's still not really romantic? But it is love in some way.

One thing that these movies did really well is that they were able to tell more of the story than the books did because the books are written in the first-person perspective of Katniss, so whenever anything happens outside of the games like seeing other districts or how Seneca is dealing with things that just was never really touched on in the books so we got to see more of the story this way. Catching Fire is still my favorite of the series, book and movie, so when y'all get to that one I'mma be excited lol. Also, fun fact, Jack Quaid from The Boys played the guy that killed Rue.

In the books- those "dog and something else" things were genetically modified dog-human hybrids. They used DNA from contestants (the eyes/face specifically) to splice with the dogs to make them extra psychologically destructive as well as physically dangerous.
This Is not true, as Katniss only implies it without knowledge. The Capitol sends the bodies to their families as described in the first two books. Thats why Katnip covers Rue's body with flowers

I think the two biggest things the film failed to include that would have really painted just how absolutely horrible and twisted this world was were the Avox( people with no tongue) and the Mutts in the arena. The story behind how someone becomes an Avox was so dark and horrible that it really set the mood when they arrive at the capital. The mutts are supposed to not only be a physical danger but a psychological one as they are supposed to be created from the fallen tributes even to the point of resembling them in features. Missed opportunities but I guess it had to be PG13 after all.
It sucks being an adult wanting to get movies to replicate well from books but studios are looking for money. I get it. I love the movies because I saw the first movie which then got me to read the books before I watched the other 3 movies.
Yeah honestly I think this trilogy would’ve been better if this was Rated R. Would’ve been a legendary series for adult audiences and more adult themes. And of course keeping it PG-13 meant many things were censored or untouched. Like Finnick and Johanna’s sexual abuse and how the capitol used them both for prostitution. These darker things were only slightly touched in the movies but was brushes aside

Well they DID have the Avoxes in the background but they were never acknowledged, which I found strange. The Avoxes are mentioned in Mockingjay but that was very late and didn't properly explain what Avoxes really are...I didn't like that detail being mishandled.

This remains the one YA series I’ve let myself get invested in. Went and read all the books after seeing this movie and was pleasantly surprised to see it go full political drama/thriller. And yes, Catching Fire is the best.
Despite the mixed reactions to the films, I always recommend the Divergent series to anyone who loves Hunger Games. That story was absolutely incredible and I was sad that the films struggled. The story was literally left unfinished and they were just getting to the crazy twist (oh yeah, there's a crazy twist at the end btw).
@@xlDysenterylx honestly, the divergent book series was quite good. admittedly, i understand how it could come off as trite or convoluted, but that book series is still a favourite of mine. and yes, it is a shame that the movies suffered; i wished they explored the development of tris and four's relationship a lot more than what had been shown in the first movie.
I remember reading the books in 2009-2010 or something. THe woman that wrote them is a damn genius and the environment is a lot more complex than the movies can show. The trilogy is a masterpiece and gives any trilogy a run for its money, true darkness within those books and no happy endings.

Haymitch is my favorite character! After I watched it the second time, I just realized how much pain in his eyes when he told Peeta and Katniss that "and know in your heart that there's nothing I can do to save you." Because he has been mentor for over 20 years and all the kids he was mentoring are all dead. It's too much pain for him so he just stop caring and drink like a fish, but once he saw hope in Catniss, he did a great job in finding her sponsor and create stories for her to help!
The reason all of them were sticking together despite the rule that there can only be one is because they’re a ‘Career Pack’ which basically means the strongest districts being 1 and 2 will be temporary allies and stick together to hunt for weaker districts, once all the other districts are out of the way they break off their alliance and fight to the death.
Don’t forget District 4 as well

In the books, the dogs are a lot more scary because they come from the dead tributes. There is a scene in the book where Katniss sees Rue’s eyes in one of the dogs.

@@someone-pz4dg If they didn't get it just right that could end up looking really silly and out of place, and iirc the first movie was made on a shoe-string budget for this kind of film, so they didn't have much time or resources to perfect it. And on the other hand if the pulled it off too well it might end up raising the age rating, in which case the studio would probably force them to either cut around it or replace it last minute with something quicker and cheaper, either of which would hurt the film. So while it's a shame, I can't blame them for playing it safe.
@@jaqenhghar2970 action in movies are very speed up. Especially in the last movie. Looks like whole game was only a week. In books it took almost 3 weeks. Rue died on 9th day and fight with Cato was 9 days later so they got a time to take the bodies and change them

The one thing is this movie doesn't show how capable and STRONG Peta is. He's kind of a beast on his own.

I think they did that, because they wanted to make Katniss to be the main "strong" one, when it really wasn't that way. They both had strengths and weaknesses, especially Katniss.
The thing that always trips me out is those little moments when we, the audience, start to think like members of the Capital. I’ll catch myself thinking, _”They look so badass on fire.”or, “Kiss already” or even, “Kill That Jerk!”_
It’s not something most people who watch this for the first time realize; we get caught up in the movie magic (the costumes, effects, the acting) , etc.
You two seem more aware of this than most reactors. Most love the explosions, try to think of how _they_ would “”win””, or wonder why she doesn’t just pick a boy (which isn’t what the story is about).

A note on Rue’s death - The Capitol was unlikely to show a moment of two districts being kind to each other, such as Katniss singing for Rue. But they do always show the hoverships picking up the fallen tributes, which means the capitol couldn’t avoid showing Rue’s body surrounded with wildflowers.
Also at 31:00 you point out that The Capitol sent in the dogs just because they were ready for the game to end. Funnily enough, later on you meet a Victor named Annie (Finnick’s wife) and in her game, the Capitol broke a dam which drowned all of the tributes except for her, because she was from district 4 and thus the best swimmer.

Those tributes are from District 1 and 2. They were much better off than the other districts and were loyal to the capital. They contributed many of the peacekeepers used to control the other districts. The tributes trained from a young age for the honor of competing in the games, which caused them to win a lot more often.
Haymitch won at 14. He had mentored 22 games before this one. He has to live in the District but is isolated from the rest of the District.

This is one of the few young adult franchises I actually like because it's really brutally honest about revolutions and political systems of power. The author did their research on how revolutions tend to end with corruption and cruelty and how that cycle continues on and on until someone says enough.
A rare moment of levity in the book not shown in the film: as Katniss grabs the backpack and runs for the woods, when the knife thrown at her sticks in the pack, she laughs and yells back over her shoulder "Thanks for the knife!" Which pisses Clove off of course.
Peeta admitted he had a crush on Katniss to help her. The only people who knew she was good with a bow Were Peeta, Haymitch and the game masters. In the beginning, the capitol people only knew she looked good, had a score of 11, and volunteered for her sister.
Next year will be 10 years this movie came out. Wow. Love this series.

One important aspect as to why the President was mad is also because of what happened in District 11. When Rue died, and they saw how Katniss is going against the game in a sense, it sparked the riot in the District. Which is absolutely not what the President wanted. He wants subservient people in the Districts who just obey and serve.
Love how calculating Katniss is even when she doesn’t appear to be. She called the gamemakers’ bluff and won and it’s always one of my favorite moments

The sad thing about Haymitch is that Snow killed his mom brother and girlfriend when he won his game by using the force field to his advantage.

Haymitch in the books actually revoluted as the last survivor in his game and The Capitol killed his little brother, mother and girlfriend 2 weeks later as punishments. Thats why he drinks so much.
I think what's especially heartbreaking about Katniss meeting Rue... is not only that she probably reminds her a LOT of her little sister... but IF Katniss, for instance wasn't allowed to volunteer.. Prim and Rue probably would've become friends before entering the Arena (similar age, demeanor, etc)... and then been allies in the games.... that's something I hadn't really thought of before but could totally imagine happening... it just adds another layer to me for what Rue & Prim mean to Katniss... 💐💗🏞 For Rue 🐦🌲🕊
When Rue died in the book I called my best friend early ass in the morning to yell at her for not warning me. I cried like she was a real person. They really make Peeta a wussy in the movies.
No, they show some of his "strength". Physical strength is not the only type of strength. Peeta excels in BOTH.
It's amazing how this film/book trilogy covers so many topics relevant today: the extremities of reality TV, violence enacted on kids, the rich/impoverished, absurdities of high fashion, etc. The next films are also amazing and impactful. Def gotta finish the series.

What Katniss did with showing emotion and love for Rue and how she refuse to kill Peeta at the end was an act of rebellion to President Snow. She started a spark ✨ and not even meaning to. The reason for the Hunger Games was because of the rebellion of District 13 a long time ago. The Mockingjay pin she was wearing didn't help much since it was an old symbol of the rebellion. They would use Mockingjays to send messages between districts until President Snow had them all killed but some of them survived it seems. Either way she started a rebellion without even knowing and that is why President Snow is so mad. I loved these books, and remember feeling a sense of dread when I watched the movie and they were about to go into the game because of the books. It just seems like many people have lost that humanity side to them.. your reaction was amazing as always. 😊
I can't remember if it's confirmed in the books that the guy in 11 after Rue’s death was his dad, but I like to believe it was.

Great choice of films to watch. They don’t get enough credit for how good they are. I think a lot of people assume they are kids films. Having read the books too, I still prefer book 1 to film 1, but then I actually preferred the films to the books overall. I also love Jennifer Lawrence in this role. Probably my favourite role of hers. The Rue death gets me every time and I love that piece of score that plays. From memory, in the book, District 11 (known for grain) send Katniss a care package of bread to thank her for the respect she showed Rue.
Cato’s death is so much more brutal in the book. When he gets thrown into the mutts, he keeps himself alive through sheer force and will. The pain is unbearable but he can’t die because of some advanced body armor. ONE DAY passes and he still is alive, moaning in pain. Katniss finally decides to put him out of his misery.
There's a beautiful bit in the books after Rue dies. District 11 had been gathering donations for supporting their tributes and they were so touched by what Katniss did for Rue they sent her the loaves of bread that had been planned for Rue.
As for Rue, in the books, the monster hounds at the end had 'human' eyes. And, Katie's swore one of the pairs of eyes in the smallest hound, looked like Rue's.
i see so few people mentioning how katniss got her name. it's the name of an edible plant and her father told her once before he passed away, "as long as you can find yourself, you'll never starve." also peeta's family is a family of bakers, hence peeta. most of the names have something to do with the district the person came from or their family occupation!
I loved your reactions! The shock of children killing children, Rue’s death, Thresh’s vengeance upon clove for bragging about killing little Rue, then Thresh’s death after killing ambushed by the Muto Wild dogs (in case you didn’t know each Muto was a clone from each of the Tribute’s DNA)

The fact that there's a live interactive audience really makes every decision a lot more interesting, because for many moments, you're not sure what's real, and what's made up BS for sympathy points

In Ancient Greece, there was a tournament where children from various islands were rounded up to participate in a bloody game of survival against live bulls. They were given no weapons to fight the enraged animals; only their skills kept them alive. The bull would charge, head down, and the child would run forward and grab the horns. The bull then tossed it head up and the child would literally catapult over its back. But the kids got tired. I always thought The Hunger Games was inspired by that.
During the reaping of Peeta, she said it’s “hot guy over there” but then she said “never mind”. I was like awhh lol
This was so fun to watch because you guys have never heard of The Hunger Games! Like, not even the basic concept which makes this so entertaining to watch, a pair of fresh eyes. Catching Fire is even better than THG! One of the best sequel films out there.

As far as movies depicting dystopian futures, the Hunger Games series is top-notch.
Remember, Haymitch was a mentor for all of district 12s tributes and for all those years he's seen them all died until Peta and Katniss win the hunger games. He had to witness their deaths (previous tributes) on screen for other people's enjoyment.

I saw Jennifer Lawrence's first movie "Winter's Bone" when it came out in 2010. It was so good... so raw and realistic. I believe she won an Acadamy Award for it... her very first movie :o I love most of her movies.
Probably still her best film. Superb.
She won the Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013. I think she was snubbed for Winter's Bone. She does a phenomenal job in that movie.

What I loved most about this entire series is how faithful they were to the source material. Sure, there are some things that have to be changed as they don't translate well to the silver screen but the entire series is right from the books.
Peeta really did have feelings for her. He was being completely honest about all of that.

It's very easy to say Katniss had it in the bag for the popularity aspect when watching the movies, but you have to understand that she was 23rd in a long line of 12-17 year olds all with their own backstories and sympathetic interviews. Peeta just understood that there's no such thing as too much sympathy/desirability when it comes to this. He found a way to get points in his favor *and* help Katniss in his interview.
The climax with the berries is really awesome. Really liked the first two installments of this series though the final two were a little boring in my opinion. Still totally worth watching if you're into action/dystopian movies.

I read these books when I was 14 years old, I loved them so much that I started reading like crazy looking for more books of this type. And almost 10 years later I can say that among youth literature this is one of the best stories ever written.
