      @henrylockett2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I know right? Some singers have power but not a lot of agility. Others have very agile voices but not much power. Whitney had both in abundance. Topped off with that rolling vibrato; timbre, angelic tone and operatic headvoice.

    • @klion3924
      @klion3924 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      She was a coloratura soprano that knew how to be powerful. Her natural range is a coloratura that is why she able to agile and easily go through registers. Momma trained her on her power and church grit. So she is a combination of it all.

    • @THEE.apples
      @THEE.apples 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@klion3924 she's not a coloratura. She was not a trained in classical repertoire at all. Being agile does not equal coloratura. It's a very specialized type of classical singing that you have to be trained extensively for.

    She was so versatile as a singer, using a wide variety of techniques when singing. She understood the principle of dynamics and control. I love when she would go into that operatic tone. as a established pop singer that was rare to find and how she could just bridge those different techniques into whatever she was singing. Whitney was most definitely a innovator and master of her craft.

      @@jmlegrairstudio I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis of the greatest vocalist of all time-yes I said it. I could give you link after link of live performances of Whitney that will simply amaze and astound you. You should definitely consider doing analysis of her. Prime Whitney’s was a vocal legend -this performance was right at the cusp of her prime-but even after her prime Whitney still knew how ti sing live and amaze her fans. There’s an audio of 16yr old Whitney singing Eternal Love that is so fabulous. There’s also an audio of Whitney in 1986 at San Francisco singing I Am Changing that will literally blow you away. There’s also another audio of Whitney singing her mothers song He, I Believe in Japan 1990 that will solidify why she’s called The Voice. This legend used her instrument far greater than any other artist. I will be anxiously awaiting your analysis of more live (or recorded) Whitney Houston songs.

    Girlfren, I',m opera trained so you speak my language. I found some of your observations very insightful and usually I don't like "vocal coaches and experts" chiming in on our major talents on TH-cam. You I liked! :-)
    One of your best observations was how Whitney deploys EVERYTHING physical it's possible to deploy---neck, i think you said torso--we speak of support from the diaphragm--Miss Whitney deploys ALL the troops like a General! When we try to describe the process (head notes, chest notes, register transitions) we're mostly speaking in analogy. We actually don't have the process as worked out as we want. We do have a lot of "terminology" however :-)
    If you're an Opera singer singing, no microphones, at the NYC MET or La Scala you HAVE to support your voice--or no-one will hear you. Whitney is miked always but she produced supported vocals much like an Opera singer---and her more "florid" technique could often probably be described as almost a form of "Coloratura"--more than for instance "a form of scat". The key to the most brilliant Coloratura is that it isn't rehearsed to oblivion---it's improvised IN performance and one MUST have a rock solid Bel Canto foundation to do that.
    When I compare Whitney to other GREAT singers like Christina or even Maria or Celine. They are all graduates of the Whitney Houston School of Pop Singing at a very high level. They all have that ability to sing with great embellishment. Sometimes with Maria I'm like, "Girl, just land on a note---any note...but hold it for 2 or 3 seconds) What none of them can do the way Whitney Can is to cant out straight-up melodic lines WITHOUT the flourishes. She absolutely CAN do that if she has a mind to. In that respect her "foundation" is the strongest I've ever heard from a 'pop' singer.
    And please trust me, I don't use the term 'pop' with disrespect. Much as my first love IS Opera. Today it's not classical musicians and opera singers really defining our culture in music. It is, for lack of a better term "pop" singers. They embody where our musical energy is primarily channeled now.
    And Kim,
    I miss Whitney every single day. I do not think I can ever stop. VERY grateful we have her recordings but she had so much left unfinished. Cissy could NOT let Whitney be herself. My BF lived 3 doors down from her in New Jersey FOR YEARS! I won't go into that here but the real love of her life was NOT Bobby Brown. That was a path she traveled trying to placate her homophobic mother.

      Thank you for confirming what many opera maestros have said when comparing Whitney to any pop singer. They are very clear about how superior she was in voice development, agility and support and ornamentation.. I have yet to meet a trained opera singer not say this... I have heard them mention Mahalia / Shirley Bassey too but they always made not clear that those singers had a lot of c chest development but Whitney was better overall because she had far more ornamentation and dynamics than them

    One of my favorite aspects of Whitney's technical skill is her PERFECT vibrato, and her impeccable discernment in choosing when to use it on when not.
    I Will Always Love You is a great example of that especially the way she handles the big "And I...." phrase differently on each chorus. Also in her live performances of One Moment In Time, the way some of her belts are straight and some use vibrato, but immense power in both 🤩 She had all the technical skill you could wish for but always made it sound so natural, organic and joyful. She really is just a master class in singing!

I loved when her eyes would be looking up because she was really locked in. This woman was a song stylist, just like Nancy Wilson said she wanted to be remembered as. The big thing about Whitney, also, was there was always a beginning, middle, and end to a song. Something that these newer artists need to figure out is how to bring closure to a song. Marvin Winans is great at it and Whitney was a master at it.

    One word Gifted. Although she had talent she was gifted. But I also give you props for having such a beautiful voice as well as understanding her vocal brilliance. She was definitely iconic but others are doing their thing too. Everybody has their own voice. Always use your gift your way. Blessings to you and all on this video. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤

    A Nippy cantava cada nota no seu devido lugar! Contava a história através da sua enorme musicalidade! É muito prazeroso ouvir a sua voz. Tom, agilidade, voz de cabeça, range e vibrato perfeito. ❤

    Aspheric onsets & (not even sure I heard or wrote this right)...Crack cork tilt...I learn so many new terms from you!
    Whitney was such a phraseologist!! And enunciator!! She said she wanted to be a teacher too and I can hear her teaching aspirations in the way she sings words! Her lyricism!
    (mind you, I don't know for sure if I'm even using these musical terms in the right way but I'm trying lol!)
    Perfect singer = Whitney Houston
    Your reviews always make me go "aha"! And I smile all throughout!
